Remember when he got the car for £1. The government was literally spending money on scrapping cars which didn't deserve it, when so many could have been saved.
Early TG and the older Cheap Car challenges are just so cozy to rewatch. Very quaint compared to what a modern car show challenge would be, takes me back to a nice simpler time.
3:25 ~ 3:31: * Guy with Speedometer (reading James' Jag): "Error....." * Jeremy: "What do you mean 'error'?" * Richard: "He'll never do that again!" * Jeremy: "Why does that never happen with the police!?!" That conversation always cracks me up! 😂🤣😂🤣
that bit there just gives a clear picture that behind the scenes, they all laughed their arses off every time. It really was a playground for that crew!
James should have been given minus 140 points for the speed challenge because, his speed didn't actually get recorded. I'm puzzled by Richard's car doing 110 mph and the radar picking up 115 mph. That would lead me to believe either his speedo is out or the radar is wrong.
I should've stopped playing with transformers and went out to buy cars apparently

Nothing shows the collapse of our modern capitalist economy like the spiking housing and car prices its so unbearable!!! Whenever i listen to these guys or really any early 90s-2000s media talk about pricing i can see why culture seemed much more cheerful back then compared to universal cynicism nowadays The craziest thing i have learned honestly is that luxury and supercar werent always synonymous and you could actually purchase like a cool Italian supercar for completely reasonable sums, like wow did the global economy go down the shitter post 2008 and especially post covid lol
This is the first Top Gear episode I remember watching, on the 29th May, 2005, at the age of 12, in a hotel room with my parents while on holiday in Portsmouth.
Probably my favorite cheap car challenge. It all just seemed so genuine, from the laughs to the car choices to the challenges themselves. Where does the time go man?
To me, it shows how important the original editing was, the entire experience goes from 10/10 to 7/10 just because they swapped the music (and sloppily re-edited it)
Home from work, wifes gone to work, left me some Tatty Ash and some crusty bread and i turn the TV YT on to this, absolute GEM an early TG Cheap Car Challenge & as i sat down i said i was first to arrive
I like to think i had most of the Top Gear Challenge Compilation DVDs though this one wasnt on any that i purchased,so im thankfull for posting even if in part. Do recall seeing The Stig throw his hands up in the Jag when it was on tv and of course the curves in the background on the alpine course were where Daniel Craig's Aston Martin were rolled in his first Jamed Bond outing of Casino Royale many years later, and the lorrying challenge 😊
I had a 82 Starion when i was 19 man Around 1998?. It was awesome. Full digital dash in the 90s! I loved it. HUGE 2.6L I4 motor and Turbo 5 speed trans. Was great. I've so many cars in my life i cant even remember what i did with it. did i sell it? give it away to a friend or family? i just cant remember! Cool Story, I went to a Wedding in Mexico with it. about 3am after many hours of dancing and drinking i decided to head beck to the next town where my gran lived. I drove flat out the whole 20 miles. Fastest it would go was about 135MPH. I could see the digital engine temp pips on dash go up 1 by one every few minutes lol! What a great memory, underrated car for sure.
2:50 I love the crew member giggling to himself and clearly having fun It’s this charm that newer shows are missing. If a crew member dared show traces of life today they’d be fired on the spot.
Hey. morning gentlemen's Lovely to See your Three Together Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond and James May it's a fantastic show you gentlemen's have I Like you guys keep me updating with Top Gear 🙏😉
HEY CAPTIAN SLOW! I had a Chrysler Conquest (The corporate cousin of the Mitsubishi Starion), in much better shape than Clarkson's, and it didn't leak and burn oil and leave a cloud in its wake. And the Starion waxed May's J-a-a-a-a-a-ag! 🤣 Now an oil leaking contest . . .
The days when you could get a 635i for £1500… This challenge did start a love affair with the 6-Series in general. I own a second gen, but would LOVE to be able to own an E24 635i, bit of a dream car nowadays.
This was pure Top Gear. Jeremey appears, introduces himself, car door won't shut, doesn't cut, proceeds to carry on introduction, shuts car door, and voilà ..
Not gonna lie, I'd definitely go with the jag if I could get one for one and a half grand. And then I'd dump another grand or so into it to upgrade the fuel system, as well as more money to get that V12 into a reasonably reliable condition. Why? Because a friend of the family had one and it caught fire and burned their garage down due to the infamous fuel rail defect. XJSs are weird and honestly kinda neat cars, so it's worth putting the extra money and effort into them.
I’d also would have picked the Starion. I’ve driven one back in the day. It was my brother in -laws car, and I drifted it all the way thru the neighborhood on the way back house. You get up on boost and she’s quick.
I’ve seen every episode of top gear multiple times, the specials countless times. But I genuinely have no memory of this challenge. First time ever seeing it. I’m so confused
I love that Clarkson and co are all game for the challenges Hammond "I want an alloy, I want an alloy" Clarkson "It Might fit" Hammond runs off and steals one
What stylish two-door coupe (that's not a Porsche) would you have bought?
What it is , is a mitsibushi st-starrion, i errr i always loved these, and this the last one ever imported into britain.
Starion. No discussion.
Saab 900 turbo
Probably a mustang. Was it ever a coupe? xD
I’d almost certainly regret it but give me the XJS
God damn are these depressing.
Jeremy's car was 14 years old and he got it for £1,500.
It's a different world now.
Remember when he got the car for £1. The government was literally spending money on scrapping cars which didn't deserve it, when so many could have been saved.
How is it different. You can pick up a boxster for 3000£ which adjusted for inflation isn’t more expensive than this
@horvathr95 You are not getting a 2010 boxster for 3 grand.
@@nickrulez809765 Ok and why do you need a 2010 specifically? Look at 986 Boxster prices
that would be £2500 now roughly speaking. fucking crazy
“And I was the first to arrive” is my 4th favourite quote of all time
1-3?
Especially when followed by "and as you can see I've done this properly"
@@JosephVance-n8d „all we know is… he is called The Stig“, „still… could be worse“ and „Anyway…“ or „Across the line“

not so cheap anymore
A good condition Starion GSR VR probably go for 30k £ 😮 now
Imagine car prices today still being like then. I could have a dream car garage under 20k (excluding exotics)
bought my 85 xjs-c for 1500 about 4ish months ago, sure it has no mot or floodboards but it is a v12
The Jag is
Nope! 😂 Wish I would have kept the 40K mile, Black Conquest TSi(Starion in the States) I owned back in High School.
You couldn't get a blown up version of all these cars today for the price.
Kit cars are our only hope. Some of them blokes are after performance. Me? Im fine with looks alone.
I found ten XJSs, two 635s, and twelve Starions under that price. Some of them looked at least as good as those.
Also. Inflation.... 1500 is probably around 3000 in today's money
Adjust the price for inflation you dope
bought my 85 xjs-c 4 months ago for 1500, sure had no mot or floorpans or any working dash array or blinkers..... but it is a v12 and it runs
That shot with the Starion in midair was glorious
Early TG and the older Cheap Car challenges are just so cozy to rewatch.
Very quaint compared to what a modern car show challenge would be, takes me back to a nice simpler time.
Yea. the budget was a lot smaller and wasn't as high paced as today shows are. much better.
Very nicely put, the exact sentiment I have. TG of that era calms my nerve and helps me sleep.
3:11 Buffeting 🔥🔥🗣️🗣️
3:25 ~ 3:31:
* Guy with Speedometer (reading James' Jag): "Error....."

I've never laughed as genuine as Jeremy's laugh at water bucket challenge. A sad reality, really.
£1500 for a 635, god those were the days
I got mine for $11,000 5 years ago. excellent condition and I consider it to be nearly be a steal.

There will never be another show like this. GOLD.
So glad this is finally on UA-cam in good quality. Always loved this challenge.
me too, quintessential Top Gear for me
It looks INCREDIBLE
Though the music on this particular version is rubbish
I don’t even know where you could find the early season stuff anymore, they stopped making pre season 10 dvds years ago.
The stock music replacement near ruins it though. The original soundtrack perfectly matched the episode
Never noticed it before. Jezza's car at about 0:57 is basically MADE of body filler!
Buckets and buckets of Bondo
Oh how i miss him saying "buffeting"
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this was the first ever one
"He bought a grandfather clock" 1:20

7:29 "Ain't no party like a Diddy party"

6:55 just the laughter of someone who doesnt take life seriously & doing the best job.....in the world 😅😅
After all these years seeing this episode again Im still impressed that clapped out Jag managed 140mph 😂
I owned a few XJSs and given room, they were not slow! Mine could cruise all day at 145 mph if it wanted to

I buy a wheelie bin
James buys a grandfather clock
and Richard's handbrake works "reasonably well"

That Jaguar infamous reliable issue was apparent. 😂
I was glad to be able to see this. It had been a long time and it was great to watch it again
9:48 even the stig was like ‘this is SH*t’
Thank you for this one , bloody good episode that I’ve only seen once or twice before ( not forty times like the others )

It's crazy how many companies used that Toyota body. Dodge, Isuzu and probably more that I don't know about

Pay an $1K for cases of motor oil apparently. The last thing I saw that leaked that much oil had 18 cylinders and a propeller attached to it.
There are now just 28 Mitsubishi Starion's left on UK roads. How times have changed
The squeak from the Jag at 9:57 always gets me.
Love how Jeremy had so much fun with the water challange 😂
2 of the cars are not even sports cars but grand touring boats, and starion is a sportscar but as james rightly pointed out "is rubbish full stop"
"You sir, in your sporty BMW, are probably going to drown" in a Tupperware bin of water. One of my favorite quotes from the show.
Love how they were all laughing at James’ jag but anyone that’s ever had one knows darn well they can do that. XJR-S was insane!!
6:59 I have never seen Jeremy enjoy a challenge so much.
never been so happy this week, until i watched this
I’d missed this episode as a kid. My dad told me about it but I’d never seen it till now
I miss the old days
Increase in price of many cars is also because of these trio. They love a car, we love it too
.... Clarkson & May look about 23... Hammond looks more like 12¾... 😂 BRILLIANT THANKS 👍
and now something like this would be expansive as hell
Are these uploads with the original audio, or with the royalty free audio?
I’d also would have picked the Starion. I’ve driven one back in the day. It was my brother in -laws car, and I drifted it all the way thru the neighborhood on the way back house. You get up on boost and she’s quick.
I miss Top Gear and the silly challenges .. always a good laugh , and these 3 got along so well.
The starion is a great all rounder car, it was on par with the 944 except in top end power. Too bad they didn't make a lot of em.
I’ve seen every episode of top gear multiple times, the specials countless times.
But I genuinely have no memory of this challenge. First time ever seeing it.

Part2?
This is my favourite ever episode. Shame the music on this is awful
I owned a Mitsubishi Starion back in the early 90s. It was absolutely bonkers
How times have changed
When Jeremy talks about "many moons" since the BMW was new in 1984, which was 20 years before this episode.
It is 20 years since this episode....😅
I'd have gone for the Starion. It's my favourite sports coupe.
I wonder what's an modern day Japanese equivalent for the price of the Starion back then
My favorite episode of the series.
Still the Jaguar
I love that Clarkson and co are all game for the challenges
Hammond "I want an alloy, I want an alloy"
Clarkson "It Might fit"
Hammond runs off and steals one
This was the most underrated challenge imo
My favourite of the cheap car challenges! And so far the only one where I liked all three cars!
