Try resetting the gearbox, sit in it with the doors shut and turn the ignition on but do not start, press the throttle to the floor pressing the kick down too and hold it there , after 20 seconds turn the ignition off while still flooring it and after 20 seconds take your foot off the pedal and just sit there for a few minutes without opening any doors. Now it should relearn the gearbox settings when you drive it

The early Mercedese from the 2000s have a disease that causes the engine cooler from Valeo to leak, from September 2003 the problem was solved. This means that internal engine coolant gets into the gearbox and dilutes the gearbox oil, in addition the glycol attacks the internal parts of the gearbox and it rusts. The whistling of the gearbox is an indication of this. I did not know whether the AMG models from that time were also affected. In any case, the following is recommended: 1. replace the engine cooler, 2. flush the gearbox. With a lot of luck, that will be enough. Otherwise, install the manual.
‘We are going to take control still’ made me chuckle!!!! EXCELLENT, highly recommend RPL for any merc assistance needed; you need to see his 205 and E55!!!
The shifter paddles in every AMG I've had (to include two C55s) have been INCREDIBLY manual. Like you can hold it at rev limiter, floored, and it won't upshift. All it does is downshift to save the torque converter when you slow down. Your TCU is crapped out. Time for a manual swap. P.S. My current daily is a manual swapped clk55 and it's EONS better than the auto. Do it.
Also my buddy has a 700 whp C55 with the blower from an e55 and a tune, stock block and everything, 240k original miles, and 14psi of boost and he's chugging along. You can absolutely supercharge the NA one.
8:03 I have a horrendous chest infection, I proceeded to watch that part back multiple times....I was starting to feel better but now I feel a lot worse. Cheers boys, thanks for making me laugh, bastards.
My Audi a4 used to burn a lot of oil so I drained the good oil then filled it for with cheap horrible oil from the supermarket then drove it 500 miles sensibly, then changed it again and refilled with the usual good stuff and it hasn’t burned a drop since. It’s a bit sketchy but it’s perfect now. Modern oil in some scenarios can be too efficient meaning the cylinder bores are polished by the oil control rings meaning they can’t work effectively as the bores need to have a minute amount of roughness to them.
Love watching you guys. I just bought a 2010 jaguar xf 5.0 for $3000 CAD so about £1700.. really happy with it has a bit of rust like your amg but the engine is sick.. love it
The gearbox on my Amg Clk 55. The gearbox from cold jolts from 2nd to 3rd and has done so for 11 years. It does use lots of oil. I carry a 5 litre bottle around with me. Outside of servicing I put in 10 litres in a year doing 7000 miles. All the Mercedes specialists I have spoken to say it is completely normal for this engine. I put in a qualife diff when I brought the car as did my friend who had the C55. It transformed the handling of the car. My other friend has a E55 Supercharged estate with 550hp. A remapp and a pulley change on the supercharger. The bhp figure. He had to upgrade all the suspension and brakes to take the extra power. Also bear in mind the driveshaft is under a lot of pressure and may be worth upgrading. The gearbox can handle the extra torque. He changed the diff. To sum up he prefers rolling starts with the car as it does not stresses the components as much! A lot more midrange power. He kept the car Auto not manual. So you get a lot more power. Dry weather and mid range is when you can get the power down. Lowdown especially in wet weather you could end up wrapping it round a tree if you get it wrong! If you want to the project you suggest then enjoy it. I have owned various AMGs. If I were you I would enjoy this car and sell it. Get a E55 in good condition! Remap and put the pulley on the supercharger and leave it at that. A lot less time and money and possibly heartache for you. If you want to on the journey then do so! It will be a lot of fun I am sure.
Best video i absolutely enjoyed you two like doing almost a proper review. Also congratulations on an AMG car… my dream is a CL55 AMG cls55 AMG or a 2006 S55 AMG I’m in love with the supercharged AMG cars from 2000s can’t wait to see more of this. Thanks boys well done!
My W209 CLK55 also used a ton of oil too. I spent a metric fuck ton on mobil 1. Seemed much worse on a long run which I always assumed pointed towards valve stem seals due to high intake vacuum during cruising. Did manage 30-31mpg on a 2.5h run which I did twice every weekend for a long time.. Was exactly the same MPG on cruise control at 60, 70mph and beyond. Weekday short trips it was averaging 13-17mpg though.. I donated it back to Birmingham after I got fed up of putting oil in it and the gearbox was making the same noise.
I had a 2006 W203 C180 Kompressor Avantgarde - same colour as this one, very similar overall look and pretty much the same interior. Had most of the same features - heated seats, rear headrests that ping back when you press the button. Was a great car for 2006, still looks great now.
One of Mercs best engines. I have owned a Clk Amg 55 for 11 years which uses the same engine. My friend had a C55 in the past as well. Very few issues with the car. Normal checks! Run the car and make sure no oil, gearbox and cooling system leeks! Always good to get the car on a ramp and have a good look as you would do with any car. They rot at the rear end around the rear wings. Bullitt proof engine. A remap gives you 25hp more! However it really improves the low down torque! Gearbox oil change essential if you are not sure when last done! Enjoy it. It is a great car! It does spin its wheels at the low end which I tend to avoid doing. Extremely lively in wet weather being rear wheel drive!
I like Edwin was not a Mercedes fan but purchased a cheap 1999 E55 AMG Wagon a eight years ago as a dog car and absolutely love it still . It has cost a fair bit to keep on the road and this period of Merc does like to rust.....BTW You can buy an aftermarket dipstick to check the gearbox oil but it is worth changing the oil and filter. There are a couple of places where they leak but they are very cheap to fix.
All the people saying the gearbox reset bollocks , press the pedal , key off shit like that. That's throttle body reset. You should service the gearbox and reset the adaptations through Xentry and relearn them. This 722.6 old 5 speed is reliable but slow gearbox , and there's a dipstick but you need to buy it febi 38023.
Hey guys, the transmission whine could be the following, a plugged transmission filter which will give a whine in all gears... It sounds VERY similar to what I could hear in the video. Bearing failure could be another issue, but the sound would be heard in park too... make sure the fluid is up to proper level with the Mercedes dipstick tool.
How did that absolute heap even get through an MOT with that oil consumption 😂😂 I had an MR2 mk3 which went through a litre every 400 miles and it failed emissions testing by over 10x the legal allowed limit lmao. For reference I think the max limit for one of the categories was like 0.6. Mine came back at about 6.5 😂
Good car. Keep it and drive it 👌 My daily is a '98 E430, the w210 with the smallest 4.3 m113, 275hp and the earlier 90s timeless interior, and I adore it.
Bro I was literally thinking about buying a C32 AMG (The C55's supercharged V6 little brother, it must be a wagon though), this video made me want to buy one even more. Especially when you said it isn't a real AMG, to prove that the C55 is barely faster lol
@@JAYPCARS Yeah the one I'm after is a blue wagon with the exact same wheels as the one in this video. No C32 badges, only 1 AMG badge on the trunk and I'll probably remove the V6 KOMPRESSOR badge so it will definitely be a sleeper💪
13 years ago I was considering a c55 or an e46 m3. In the end i went with the E46 and felt i made the right decision based on rust, gearbox and handling. Only sold the e46 m3 a few weeks ago after all those years.
I have the same transmission whine in my E500 7g. I'm thinking it's the front pump whining, mine has gotten to the point of slipping unfortunately, but I bought the car with the intention of manual swapping it anyways. Given the symptoms of your C55 I'd conclude you will eventually run into this issue as well. There a few other possible causes such as speed sensor rings on the rear axles, dirty fluid, bad valve body, and of all things Mass Air Flow Sensor. For anyone curious you can indeed swap a Chrysler Crossfire's 6 speed into these V8 Mercs, avoid the 04 crossfire though the Transmissions had some issues that got sorted in 05 and up. If anyone is considering a swap check out Anderzens channel.
That gearbox whine sounds similar to when the torque converter starts failing. Keep an eye on it. Also, worth checking this hasn't got coolant leaking into the transmission fluid. It only really affected earlier W203s, but there's still a slim chance of the problem occurring on a later model.
On the rust issues, all Mercedes pre-2007 suffered with corrosion, as you are experiencing with your 2005. I read awhile ago (and not sure if this is 100% factual!) that during the Daimler-Chrysler years there was an agreement to supply Mercedes with American steel, which ended up being of much inferior quality than what else was available. When the partnership ended in 2007, rust issues became interestingly less problematic...
There's also the W220s where a lot of them had extreme rust issues very early on, and others are fine to this day. The reason for that is (supposedly) that in the switch to water based paint they had to use a new rust-proofing chemical. The problem was that the tanks for the chemical were refilled every 2 weeks, but the chemical already went bad after roughly 48 hours. So unless your car was built within those 48 hours, it'd get rusty really quickly.
As a W123 C240 owner, the door rust is a known issue. I got mine fixed several years back. It is a Mercedes design fault that the doors rust like that.
8HP swap it, everyone manual swaps them but if your keeping it as a daily then 8HP is the way and it will be probably the first in the UK. Will be faster and even more economical and will future proof it if you ever do fit the e55 engine into it as those ZF 8s are very very strong even at stupid levels of power.
The MOT check comes up with the following : "There's an outstanding recall on MERCEDES-BENZ C K155GRW - If you're the owner or driver of this vehicle, contact your nearest MERCEDES-BENZ dealership for information and to arrange a free repair." It will be interesting to find out what the recall is for.
Apart from the ‘winter runner part’ which I absolutely don’t understand what would make it a winter runner or why you would even need a car for winter and one for summer when you could keep just one that does well in both seasons, i like the car.
There is definitely something wrong with the gearbox because in manual mode it shouldn't be acting like that. As for its whistling, either there is not enough oil or the filter is clogged.
Thanks for posting this video! After watching it, I thought it was a good idea for me to also have one so I picked one up a few days ago with 50k on the clock. Talk about an impulse buy! 😆
I’m a ‘BMW man’ too (mostly!). I had one of those C55 once too about 15 years ago but it was the estate version. It was a very nice thing…albeit with a surprisingly small fuel tank. Fast, very comfortable and made a great noise! 🙂
The whine is definitely the torque converter itself but you could make it go away by doing a full ATF and check the cooling. Oil burning wise, 5W-40 does seem to slow mine down
The gearbox in that is the 722.6 which is pretty much used in every mercedes for decades all the way up to the slr . Same issues that all auto gearbox have , manufacturers tell us it doesn't need oil changes it oil for life. Give it an oil change will fix most the issues . You can also get uprated solenoids and many over internal parts. Manual conversions are definitely possible as the jag xj and xk had the same gearbox and both auto alex and drivetrive have converted there jags to Manual
the Oil consumption will be blocked breathers, they are known to drink oil if they get blocked. Take off the rockers and the breather plates on top of them and blast them out with brake and clutch cleaner. Reseal and new hoses you’ll be good to go.
Who sounds good!
Its exactly this issue lads.
had an issue with pcv valve where it made the engine consume oil and also similar valve because it was forcing air from between intake seals
Yep and get the PCV valve replaced too if replacing the hoses

I’ve said this before… Not really interested in cars. However, 2 good friends pratting about is so enjoyable to watch
Also change the air Mass sensor for a new bosch one you notice much more nm and hp diffrence older ones go Lazy as crazy it sounds
Think they’re even a service item every 60k
‘We are going to take control still’ made me chuckle!!!! EXCELLENT, highly recommend RPL for any merc assistance needed; you need to see his 205 and E55!!!
Loved this because it wasn’t a BLOODY BMW !!!
Keep up the amazing work lads - happy new year
The shifter paddles in every AMG I've had (to include two C55s) have been INCREDIBLY manual.
@@Benfillmandoes he have social media?? 700 wheel is insane
8:03 I have a horrendous chest infection, I proceeded to watch that part back multiple times....I was starting to feel better but now I feel a lot worse. Cheers boys, thanks for making me laugh, bastards.
We’ve been afflicted by the same thing lmao.

Love this best video in ages you guys are great at reviewing stop messing around and review viewers cars 😊
Edwin: I want to change from 5th into 4th.
C55 in a polite German accent: Pardon?
Love watching you guys. I just bought a 2010 jaguar xf 5.0 for $3000 CAD so about £1700.. really happy with it has a bit of rust like your amg but the engine is sick.. love it
8:07 that laugh
Sneaky sneaky little 182 in the back ground 7:26 😮
Best video i absolutely enjoyed you two like doing almost a proper review. Also congratulations on an AMG car… my dream is a CL55 AMG cls55 AMG or a 2006 S55 AMG I’m in love with the supercharged AMG cars from 2000s can’t wait to see more of this. Thanks boys well done!
17:25 you can hear blow off valve
Its na
13:29 i had the oil consumption problem on the kompressor, funny enough went away after an oil change, used 0w40
I had a 2006 W203 C180 Kompressor Avantgarde - same colour as this one, very similar overall look and pretty much the same interior. Had most of the same features - heated seats, rear headrests that ping back when you press the button. Was a great car for 2006, still looks great now.
Don't worry about mpg in a V8.
Smiles per gallon are a better gauge.
30 mpg on a run at 70 mph
20 mpg on a 50 mph average + drinking oil - I'd be crying per gallon.
All cars consume the same amount of fuel though.
Everything you put in the tank will be burnt 🐡
Guys! Put a Quaife LSD inn it! (Birds Auto, a British company outside London do one for the C55 at around 900£, or 1.400£ fitted)
How did that absolute heap even get through an MOT with that oil consumption 😂😂
I had an MR2 mk3 which went through a litre every 400 miles and it failed emissions testing by over 10x the legal allowed limit lmao.
It will sit on Edwins drive for the next 6 years before Will steals it and takes it to the unit for Edwin to engine swap in 24 hours.
You should've asked "why are you blue?" In the right Ugandan TV presenter accent 😂 11:09
Bro I was literally thinking about buying a C32 AMG (The C55's supercharged V6 little brother, it must be a wagon though), this video made me want to buy one even more. Especially when you said it isn't a real AMG, to prove that the C55 is barely faster lol
The C32 is a great car, I had one for a little while, proper sleeper! Mine was an estate which is definitely the one to go for 💪🏻
@@JAYPCARS Yeah the one I'm after is a blue wagon with the exact same wheels as the one in this video. No C32 badges, only 1 AMG badge on the trunk and I'll probably remove the V6 KOMPRESSOR badge so it will definitely be a sleeper💪
@@Manoah. Very nice, good luck! Just the AMG exhaust tips giving it away on the outside then 😁
Haha the c32 is faster than the c55 and actually a better car.
❤❤❤
13 years ago I was considering a c55 or an e46 m3. In the end i went with the E46 and felt i made the right decision based on rust, gearbox and handling. Only sold the e46 m3 a few weeks ago after all those years.
Even if the engine and box don't go bang Edwin should do the supercharged and 6speed swap anyway
Really enjoyed this, a drive around and a decent conversation about the car with some banter in there as well 👌
7:04 probably "you like my pants?" in Kazakh
Happy new year everyone 😀
Omg. The level of some youtubera car production are mindblowing! Even this little channel! Im subscribed!
You need a YT Collaboration with SPR Auto Mercedes Benz specialist.
Their work is impeccable.
That gearbox whine sounds similar to when the torque converter starts failing. Keep an eye on it. Also, worth checking this hasn't got coolant leaking into the transmission fluid. It only really affected earlier W203s, but there's still a slim chance of the problem occurring on a later model.
A c32 amg has almost the same power and fuel economy never really seen content on it on youtube
Boys, you're the only channel/show where I can enjoy 20 minutes of you reviewing a car. Bravo, please keep up the good work!
It was the experimenting period with water based paint, they finally got it right in 2007
As a W123 C240 owner, the door rust is a known issue.
But manual is always better 🤷
@@MyManiacGameron a small powerful weekend car sure, on a heavy daily an auto beats it.
The MOT check comes up with the following :
"There's an outstanding recall on MERCEDES-BENZ C K155GRW - If you're the owner or driver of this vehicle, contact your nearest MERCEDES-BENZ dealership for information and to arrange a free repair."
It will be interesting to find out what the recall is for.
22 secs beat that youtube nobodies
who are you tryna press bro 🤣
Are you alright bud 😅😂
Well done. Your parents must be so proud.
I'm so jealous
Apart from the ‘winter runner part’ which I absolutely don’t understand what would make it a winter runner or why you would even need a car for winter and one for summer when you could keep just one that does well in both seasons, i like the car.
I think you uploaded to the wrong channel, mates.
when they launched this channel they said it was going to be for the podcast and their personal cars.
Try and change the gears with the gear lever. Mine works on the steering wheel changing the gears. A Merc specialist could fix that fast and cheaply.
“My names Barry. I’m a ****.”
Should be on a T-shirt. 😂 I’d buy that!
Great to see some AMG content, keep it up. A refreshing change from BMWs !
I had the cls 55 supercharge
Loved it
Had fire damage so upgraded to an cl63
What an upgrade❤️❤️❤️
transmission might be the output bearing on the shaft, because it wasnt RPM dependent, it was speed dependent, hence the prop shaft
I’m a ‘BMW man’ too (mostly!). I had one of those C55 once too about 15 years ago but it was the estate version.
It was a very nice thing…albeit with a surprisingly small fuel tank. Fast, very comfortable and made a great noise! 🙂
Excited to see what you guys do with the car! C55’s are definitely underrated IMO.
Wouldn’t daily one but hey, makes for good content ⛽️
I agree about the stupid digital oil gauge. My m140i has one and it can sometimes can be inconsistent with readings.
I had the same issue with my old c class gearbox, I done a gearbox service including filter and it’s been absolutely fine ever since
Always pumped when I see a post from the boys!!
My e55 had a similar issue with the gearbox shifting it was the gear selector in the middle - common for getting dirty or drinks spilled messing it up
A UA-camr by the name of anderzen does a bunch of manual conversion shenanigans with these. Worth a watch
Whine could be torque converter or transmission bands are stretching.
Start with a full service of all fluids and gaskets.
Happy New Year Edwin and Will 🧨🥂🍾
20:36 Will had me dying with the German accent here😂😂
Going through an old merc phase atm so this is right up my alley. Excellent content as always guys!
As an owner of a CLK550, these things SHRED. Love it to death.
