The thing that TF2 holds above Overwatch, for me, is that all 9 classes can attack, defend and support just as efficiently as each other, only differentiating with their loadouts and equipment.
There’s already a ton of variability with class load outs to the point where a class can basically become an entirely different character. Just look at Demoman and Demoknight or Sniper and Huntsman.
It definitely was the right decision to not add more classes but to add new ways of playing each class. Not only did it keep you engaged with the actual characters, but it was just as good as a whole new character with the different playstyles. It's no doubt a factor as to why tf2's playerbase keeps coming back.
No doubt. That's why I have such a hard time getting into any other class-based games like Overwatch or MOBAs, there's so fucking many characters to have to learn to play against and it's just overwhelming. The best part of TF2 is subclasses like demoknight, trolldier, and hoovy

funny how when tf2 (yes tf2 was in the work but it keeps changing so they started making tfc) there is a class calle "commander" it commands the class... well you know the voice commands i think thats what it is just "enemy ahead" and all the commander callout so the emesis blue proly inspired by it and (theory starting) the commander was the first to be experimented but couldn't take it anymore and decided to kill himself (aka scrap of the game)

If only I knew how to mod TF 2 characters, I would love to make a "Meet the Fur Trapper" video.
I used to really want the Guard Dog to be added, but I can see how busted it would have been. It'd basically be a super small hard to hit scout with a sentry attached to it. Regular Scout is already arguably one of the hardest to hit characters in multiplayer FPS history. There's also the whole deal where it'd be a bit disheartening to blow up and set fire to dogs running around the map.

I always wondered if some of the more unique sub-classes like demoknight or huntsman sniper started off as concepts for a 10th class. Especially demoknight, full demoknight is pretty unrecognizable to the normal demoman playstyle
The idea of a Ms. Pauling class seems quite unique, actually. I imagined a class like that to have some tablet and drones as their main utility, used to look for important things i.e. sentry nests, does the enemy medic have Uber, how many enemies are on the point, etc, which would be transmitted to the mercs via a screen similar to the contracter one manually by the player. Basically once something important is found the player has to choose a category of information, what they want to transmit and the location with the mouse wheel, then it is told to the entire team. For example after finding a sentry nest on last on Badwater the player does the Enemy utilities ---> Sentry Nest ---> Last Point ---> Enter. The catch here is that only 1 drone could be sent at a time, they would take 1-2 shots to take down, the player can't move or use other weapons while scouting and the transmition takes a few seconds. After the drone is down, the player has to take 2 100-metal packs or wait at a dispenser to recharge the "drone" meter. Once the scouting is done, the drone can be used as a kamikaze weapon that deals explosive damage via self-destruction, or safely returned to the player. For secondary weapons I could see the double-shot pistol she has in Expiration Date as a self-defense weapon. Melee could either be an axe (like in exp. date) or anything, really. The main downside of the class is that she has 100 health and the same running speed as the Medic. As for unlockable weapons there could be: - different types of drones that vary in speed, health, transmition speed. - different pistols - different melees, etc. There could maybe even be a "Kamikaze Pauling" subclass which camps dispensers, never gives info and uses the drones exclusively to harass Medics and Engineers. This would definetely become the most irritating subclass ever, period. This definetely won't be added, but it could be a nice addition to the game to be honest.
had an idea for the tenth class myself, basically "The Collector" is an older gentlemen, kinda like the spy but without a mask, probably bulkier too, and his ability was that he can pick up any of the weapons dropped by dead players, he does have some simple weapons, i was thinking his starter weapons were a musket, a 2 shot pocket pistol, and a military issued knife, anyways he was supposed to be a weird mixed class where you could basically do anything with him if you had the guns for it, it would be interesting to see how he would play, although i feel like theres alot of issues, like animating his hands and character with all the classes weapons, and voicelines. Probably more but who knowns.
There's a similar class with being able to pick up weapons. He's the mercenary (yeah that's his name) from Open Fortress. Open Fortress plays like old school Quake and the Mercenary there can pick up any weapon from the weapon drop locations on the map. In a multi-player like tf2 I was thinking he do something similar, but certain items like the Spy's disguise kit Medic's medigun etc don't work because he has no idea how to use those.
Ever since I watched the emesis blue tf2 movie, I started thinking that the 10th respawn compatible was the 10th class who really had a dark fate in the beginning of the movie
I would hate the guard dog class. It would be son incredibly unbalanced because of how cute it is. I don't care if it's ripping my throat out or gunning me down it's so cute and I can't kill it or stand to watch it be killed.
You completely went over the concept of the commander class, the code for a few aspects of it still exist in the coaching system that nobody uses. It was meant to work as a RTS style team leader, something like in the natural selection series.
At a guess the tenth class would've been the one missing weapon type in TF2's arsenal, the automatic rifle. It'd probably have been the middle ground between Heavy and SMG Sniper, and wasn't implemented in the game because it was ultimately considered too generic to be worth putting in alongside the original nine.
Oh don't worry about the 10th class I'm pretty sure he was featured in a film, what was it called... Oh yes, "Emesis Blue". Don't worry I'm sure he's fine
i'd argue that those other class design might've been added in one form or another just look at some of the subclasses we have today. demoknight is probably the most notable example but other stuff like the banners might've been part a different class entirely. it wouldn't be a 1 to 1 transplant of mechanics as we see today but it would have evolved look at how airblast for pyro was originally implemented it was a weapon for scout that would allow him to catch projectiles that he could throw back at his own discretion. then valve realized that it didn't fit scouts gameplay and scrapped it until they decided it would work for the pyro.
In a way we did end up getting a 10th class, or at least the equivalent of one. The Demoknight subclass is the most drastically different from the base class it's derived from. It plays so completely differently from base Demoman that it's not unreasonable to consider it an entirely different playable class from a gameplay perspective, and they've even treated it somewhat like a full class by giving it multiple loadout options.
My favorite interpretation of the 10 class was a merc who was a jack of all trades sort of thing. Being able to pick up some of the other classes’ weapons
I remember reading it somewhere that the biggest issue with a 10th class would be the balancing it and the other classes accordingly. Then, you'd have to deal with the thousands of hats, voice lines and some taunts as well.
I like to think the guard dog would be a good all-around short-range 4th support class, with the ability to refill secondaries (sandvich, jarate, maybe even mad milk), give ammo to engies or some other classes, and have the speed second only to the Scout so he (or she, we love good strong girls around here, too) could get to any player quickly. With a potential "grab" mechanic to slow characters, but would have... middling health (probably 150 like the medic or battle engi). He'd have "pistol"-like weapon that could maybe fire in short bursts that could pepper enemies, and a bite for offense, but that's probably it.
As creative the guard dogfan art was and ignoring the balance issues it could create, I don't want to blow up with a dog, no matter how cartooniy the violence
Wasn't there going to be a 10th class that was going to be a counter to Pyro called like the aviator? He could like triple jump and had a bucket of water and dressed like some 1920s pilot? I swear to god I saw concept art of this years ago and tried to look it up but couldn't find anything a few days ago
I think you might be thinking of an early concept art of a class in the early days of TF2. Richter Overtime made a video about TF2 and the early days of it. The Aviator guy you're talking about and an Alien were the only classes found of this version called "Team Fortress 2 Invasion", I think the video I saw was called "So where is Team Fortress 1??"
@@iamjjanimates I know what you're talking about but that's not it. He was definitely drawn in the TF2 art style even seemingly having to propellers sticking out from his back and he was specifically mentioned as being a rival to the Pyro. It might've been some fan art but it definitely was a thing
*Do you know right now? I wish I could go back to 2009. Because Robin Walker, the founder of Team fortress, cared about his son (Team fortress 2) at that time. Now we see, he doesn't even care about the game anymore.*
Sadly I didn't experience the "golden age" of TF2 as I was too young, and didn't even know what steam was! I'm happy I get to play it now, and HOPEFULLY SOMETHING MAJOR is added!
Unfortunately I really joined Tf2 after jungle inferno but I have heard of it before then. I would love to see how it felt to be in the golden area of Tf2 ( maybe some youtuber who has played sense launch could make a video on there experience of the past Tf2 )
Obama class: Primary:AK-47 Secondary:Glock-17 Melee:presidents pen. Extra ability: button that calls in a helicopter and sends in 3 AI solidier to attack the enemies going for demomen more than other mercs
The first thing in VIP mode that came up to my mind before you even brought it up was to troll the escorting team by going to the enemy team, no wonder they cancelled it 💀💀💀💀
tf2's classes are so well done that i really dont see anything a 10th class could add. The only real argument for one was a melee based class but demoknight filled that role.
I would say that Guard Dog fits in the role of 10th class the best, because it's non-human and because after necessary rework it would probably be a mix of a light flanker and a defence class, and also because other nine mercs would not have much serious clashes with the GD lore-wise (i still adore the image of heavy feeding the dog with sandvich). But you are right, TF2 doesn't*need* any new playable characters, and if we want new one it really need to perfectly fit the game, otherwise the magic style of TF2 universe will be seriously hindered.

As for unlockable weapons there could be:
- different types of drones that vary in speed, health, transmition speed.
- different pistols
- different melees, etc.
Look I appear in 4:14 on the voice chat! It was so fun to play with Richter Overtime that day, he even talk to me! As always great video! :D
Only real ones remember the madcap
Emesis blues test subject for the respawn trials has left the chat
had an idea for the tenth class myself, basically "The Collector" is an older gentlemen, kinda like the spy but without a mask, probably bulkier too, and his ability was that he can pick up any of the weapons dropped by dead players, he does have some simple weapons, i was thinking his starter weapons were a musket, a 2 shot pocket pistol, and a military issued knife, anyways he was supposed to be a weird mixed class where you could basically do anything with him if you had the guns for it, it would be interesting to see how he would play, although i feel like theres alot of issues, like animating his hands and character with all the classes weapons, and voicelines.
Come on, guys, we all know sandvich is the 10th class
True, it even has a Meet the sandvich
Ever since I watched the emesis blue tf2 movie, I started thinking that the 10th respawn compatible was the 10th class who really had a dark fate in the beginning of the movie
It's a Day Of Defeat soldier
I would hate the guard dog class. It would be son incredibly unbalanced because of how cute it is. I don't care if it's ripping my throat out or gunning me down it's so cute and I can't kill it or stand to watch it be killed.
if they do add another class it should be saxton hale or miss pauline, or the guard dog, or all of them lol
Honestly, demo knight is the closest we got to a tenth class due to how much variety there is to the subclass
Oh don't worry about the 10th class
I'm pretty sure he was featured in a film, what was it called... Oh yes, "Emesis Blue". Don't worry I'm sure he's fine
The guard dog def seems like it would be a horrible update, but the maps looked cool especially the train one
me trying to look for the civilian class be like: "I'm looking for Jules Archibald."
i'd argue that those other class design might've been added in one form or another just look at some of the subclasses we have today. demoknight is probably the most notable example but other stuff like the banners might've been part a different class entirely. it wouldn't be a 1 to 1 transplant of mechanics as we see today but it would have evolved look at how airblast for pyro was originally implemented it was a weapon for scout that would allow him to catch projectiles that he could throw back at his own discretion. then valve realized that it didn't fit scouts gameplay and scrapped it until they decided it would work for the pyro.
In a way we did end up getting a 10th class, or at least the equivalent of one. The Demoknight subclass is the most drastically different from the base class it's derived from. It plays so completely differently from base Demoman that it's not unreasonable to consider it an entirely different playable class from a gameplay perspective, and they've even treated it somewhat like a full class by giving it multiple loadout options.
talk about the madcap. please
The mystery is solved!
It’s Saxon Hale.

Something about unused game content has given me the creeps since i was a little kid, it was like a liminal feeling, but with something else...

I can't believe they removed the John class
love the clip of demo shooting at the sniper nest, and just before he detonates, they are both like "oh shit"
In emesis blue, theres a tenth mercenary who shoots himself, because the resurrection process was traumatic
Let’s say a 10th class did exist it would still take another year at the very least to add it
Saxton Hale:
Saxton Hale is the 10th class now.
As creative the guard dogfan art was and ignoring the balance issues it could create, I don't want to blow up with a dog, no matter how cartooniy the violence
Dognutter
Surprised you never talked about The Commander from TF2's development. Which is talked about in the developer commentary for the game.
we all know the 10th class was madcap
The 10th class came, it’s called demo knight. The new weapons added all new classses basically. Mini sentry attack engi for example
That's called making subclasses, not new ones.
I honestly dong want another class. I think the 9 we have are too iconic to have a new one.
its too late anyway
*Do you know right now? I wish I could go back to 2009. Because Robin Walker, the founder of Team fortress, cared about his son (Team fortress 2) at that time. Now we see, he doesn't even care about the game anymore.*
Sadly I didn't experience the "golden age" of TF2 as I was too young, and didn't even know what steam was! I'm happy I get to play it now, and HOPEFULLY SOMETHING MAJOR is added!
rick you seem to have particularly forgotten the bruce lee slideshow. you have only moments before death.
Unfortunately I really joined Tf2 after jungle inferno but I have heard of it before then. I would love to see how it felt to be in the golden area of Tf2 ( maybe some youtuber who has played sense launch could make a video on there experience of the past Tf2 )
10th class is now saxton hale
I'd love to see a team colored Recruit and Civilian class.
Recruit?
@@Commrade-DOGE You know. The mercenary.
@@soniomagr5498 oh yeah.
I think 12 could work
The merc, civilian, and doggo

Good informative video, Please post more man you deserve more subs. I actually really like the editing style aswell
Obama class: Primary:AK-47 Secondary:Glock-17 Melee:presidents pen. Extra ability: button that calls in a helicopter and sends in 3 AI solidier to attack the enemies going for demomen more than other mercs
The first thing in VIP mode that came up to my mind before you even brought it up was to troll the escorting team by going to the enemy team, no wonder they cancelled it 💀💀💀💀
It is, we're back at it, the TF2 golden era
If you would be a real og you would remember madcap best character I a game
Tf2 doesn't need more class considering how character can become a infinite class called a subclass
1:05 hot buff Australian man is about to dox you
The assaulter
-assault riffle
-Ammo (use it to refil ammo or throw to team mates or enemies (like the sandwitch)
-Chair leg
tf2's classes are so well done that i really dont see anything a 10th class could add.
What about the Madcap?
The tenth class is sandwich, according to the tf2 UA-cam channel
The 10th class was the friends we made along the way :)
Maybe the 10th class was the friends we made along the way
I did make on a 10th class concept, a portal-themed class. We really want a Portal-themed update! :p
