THE APPLAUSE SCENE I KNOW WHY THIS IS! This is because surgeons back in "ye ol' days" would do surgeries in public spaces in a sort of showmanship. This is him doing a "successful" surgery... in a very grizzly manner.
Well that or it furthers the main theory where these masked men are his evil side applauding his good side for commiting murder or getting a kill In this situation fritz would be the sleepwalker and the doctor atbthe same time
Also something I think people are stupid for not noticing: The reason Medic healed was because he was wearing the Medigun backpack. In TF2, this allows the Medic to passively heal, no Medigun needed. The same thing clearly happened in this scene.
The one thing that came to mind was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within... *HEAR ME OUT* When that movie came out there was a fear that movies were going to be replaced with digital actors. The idea came from a plan the film producers had of films assets, specifically the model of the main female lead, for future projects. If you know anything about that movie it was awful and it bombed. However years later we have the TF2 mercs who have become an adaptable cast of digital actors capable of playing any kind of part the human imagination is capable of giving them. Comedy, Horror, playing as UA-camrs, Surrealism, and so on. It's just kinda funny to me that years ago their was an idea by Hollywood to create virtual actors that could be reused for film roles and without that ever being the goal we have a group of probably the best and most versatile team of digital characters used for almost that exact purpose exclusively by regular people.
I want to say something about Jeremy's tooth dream. In Russian folklore, dream about your teeth falling out is a sign that one of your loved ones is going to die very soon. I never saw anyone talking about it. I don't know if it was intentional, but if it is, that is a neat detail.
@@cosmicsloth5002 There are lots of different books about dream interpretations from different authors who are usually wizards, witches or fortune tellers of some sort. The most popular one from Vanga tells about this sign. Russian people are very superstitious and it has become very popular among the folk so now its more of a folk sign than an interpretation of a witch.
If we use other cultures then when we see the footage of the RED Medic its November 1st aka Day of the Dead and from what I've seen people do celebrate it in New Mexico as well and its contrast to what is shown is interesting to say the least.
Soldier asking Fritz "who gave you that order?" is a REALLY important piece of character writing. Most people would've asked "why" or "how" but the first thing Soldier wants to know (and assumes exists) is chain of command and responsibility.
It's a good scene considering the tension that happened between the soldier and the Spy in the sewers, where Jane asked "Did Archibald teach you that?" Making him consider, "Maybe Archibald also ordered the medic to kill the brothers"
Great point. That attitude is what makes the scene where he opens fire on the man who was once his boss (Blutarch) all the more impactful; he is a completely changed man by the end of the movie thanks to all of his traumatizing discoveries.
@@GlassesIncorp47 Him throwing away his helmet after getting out of the Slaughter House is probably symbolic of how he's changed due to the events of Emesis Blue, and from that onwards he makes his own decisions. Evident by him shooting Blutarch yes, but his resistance can also be found early by him just laughing at the funeral by not following the script he was given.
Most likely because the Red team is more or lest established by Valve while the blue side has maybe one videos worth of lore which... is more lore for the red spy than anything else.
It took me almost a year to realize that the endless time you spend in the respawn machine is a nod to the fact that in-game, when you die and wait to respawn it feels like an eternity
1:07:22 What I like about this is that Soldiers first follow-up question is who gave orders. When someone tells him they killed someone he doesn't immediately blame that person and instead first thinks of someone higher up. Because he's a soldier! He too killed people, but only because of the orders coming from above and gives that benefit of the doubt towards others.
I do feel it important to note that in Spy's Disguise, Dell doesn't just break the respawn machine because he is mad. He does it because he already read the note from s-09 and blu engineer, which included the statement that "[they] do not intend to respawn again."
I just remember a funny comment on another analysis video describing Emesis Blue being a darker version of your typical 2Fort match: -Snipers camping the bridge and sewers -Engie nests by the intelligence -Matches lasting so long they feel longer than eternity -Because of these long matches, respawn times can also get ridiculous -toxic spy mains -Heavies somehow never dying -losing your sanity
A popular theory regarding the Undertaker is that he’s the personification of death. 1. Lacks any allegiance or loyalty to any side of the gravel war. 2. The Undertaker is heavily associated with death, he drives around in a stolen hearse and wears a plague doctor mask. 3. The Undertaker only appears to people who have committed murder. Such as Spy, Medic and the Soldier. 4. At one point, the Undertaker is seen to playing chess with Medic. Possibly a reference to 1957 film “The Seventh Seal” where death promises the protagonist if he can beat him in a game of chess, he will spare his life.
Honestly I think it also makes sense that if the undertaker is death he'd want the respawn machine destroyed. Seeing as such would be going against the laws of death
I actually believe this too. Though I didn't know how to interpret the Medic v Death chess game, now I do. Before, I just thought it was a metaphor for Medic playing Death, and everyone knows. Death is not to be played.
@@unapersonademasiadonormal3846 okay, so there is technically a difference between revive and resurrect. To resurrect, you have to be dead. To revive, you only have to be mostly dead.

1:04:43 Important detail you missed here: Soldier is choosing to humour Fritz. When Demoman looks at him, he returns the gaze with a dead-serious expression.
This is also hinted at by the fact they later both comment on not trusting Fritz at all. Soldier was locked in a metal box with a crazy man, and prefered to laugh with him than alienate himself from a potential enemy.
i think another important thing to mention is the shot of soldier staring blankly into nothingness (like the one at 2:00:47 ) is possibly a refrence to the famous drawing "Two - Thousand yard stare" by war artist Thomas Lea, which is not only a neat little reference, but also an amazingly subtle way of adding to soldiers characterization as a war vet and a man whos seen horrors no man should ever have to see. Amazing video as always, richter
56:36 fun fact about this scene soldier is literally having a war flashback with the room filling with water like how he mentioned the trenches would be and in the background there are air raid sirens playing
What I find strange about this is that, according to official TF2 lore, Soldier never actually joined the military. He was denied from every branch during WW2, so instead went on a Nazi genocide in Poland, until someone told him the the war was over...... In 1950.
If you pause at the right time, you can see a photo of president Lyndon B. Johnson giving Soldier the Medal of Honor. Implying that he served in either the Vietnam war or the Korean war.

i like the detail that despite his position in BLU and attitude, Jacque gets made out to be extremely incompetent throughout the story, which makes it seem pretty clear that his success wasnt for any actual merit, only for his willingness to do whatever was asked of him by Archibald.

1:19:06 People with missing eyes don't always have to lose the bad eyeball. Judging by the cloudy iris, Cyclops probably has late stage cataract in that blind eye, and he covers it up with an eyepatch because the shadows it produce disturbs his overall vision.
Though in canon he did end up losing the eye due to the Bombnomicon, however it could also be that in the "Bar" restores his body but keeps the lack of function of his eye since he may have always been blind in it (being a Demoman and DeGroot after all) or losing it naturally long before the events of the film.
The people in the church applauding Fritz made me think that it was like they were congratulating him for murdering someone, and now he's just as corrupted as the man he just killed. But that doesn't make sense, since he killed the brothers before that. It could just be his psychosis getting worse and not even have a deeper meaning, too.
I imagine that the folks in black are the souls who's torture at the hands of the respawn machine Fritz oversaw. Taunting or celebration is unclear. They could be glad to see one freed from the cycle.
I think, if you take the idea that Fritz is the past version of the undertaker, you can interpret this scene as him crossing the threshold to become the undertaker.
I also think its notable that the smoker is wearing the same mask that the church men wear at the funeral, but I unfortunately don't have the brain power to connect it to anything.
Fun fact: Stalingrad is actually a resident evil reference. He is a mix of Mr. X and Nemesis from the series. Nemesis' head crushing move and Mr. X's looks plus slow walk. And him actually saying builders league even tho he is a monsters is a reference to Nemesis who repeats "STARS." when chasing you.
1:46:20 I believe that the final part here where the image turns black and white and blocks out Jeremy is representing Jeremy being gone and dead for good while Fritz is still very much still alive thanks to the respawn machine but the loss of color represents him losing all mortality sanity and everything that made him human still alive but a soulless husk
One of the most eerie shots in my opinion is the applause after The Butcher's death, not only because of the concept and scene, but because of how creepily static the audience's bodies are while applauding. It's all just so... unsettling. Also I love the detail of The Smoker having no hesitation or pause while playing Russian Roulette, really shows how far into insanity he's gone, either he knows he won't die or doesn't care if he does.
The Spy is such a weird character to me. On the one hand he's conniving and smart, on the other he's a complete klutz who keeps tripping himself up in the most ridiculous ways. He keeps coming out on top despite all the ridiculous blunders he makes. His characterisation almost reminds me of a pagan trickster figure. He keeps getting himself into the stupidest shit and yet always manages to pull himself out somehow.
@@thesardonicpig3835 He pulled himself out, just not with his sanity (or several layers of tissue). But yeah I agree, he's a really interesting character.
when I watched the film with a friend on a voicecall he stated that they were machines that were activated by the butcher's blood. I doubt any of that but still an interesting way to look at it. He even stated the machines were collecting the blood to use it to revive the butcher later in the movie. (Spoiler alert he was wrong)
@@Kajemorphic.This might have more merit than you think. In Call of Duty's Zombies maps, Mob of the Dead, and then the reboot, Blood of the Dead they both take place in Alcatraz Island. In Mob of the Dead, you're a group of 4 prisoners, who are stuck in a pocket dimension with an endless loop where they cannot die. Essentially hell itself. It's only after they break the loop of death and afterlife by killing Weasel (the planner dude) that their souls are released. Later, the Primis crew of characters: Richtofen (who is voiced by Blutarch Mann btw), Dempsey, Takeo, and Nikolai, to obtain some blood from Richtofen's lab that sat underneath Alcatraz during his time working with the Illuminati. During the end of thr easter egg, Richtofen's blood is drained from him to escape and a Richtofen who had seen the true face of the Great War replaces him. Something that I noticed about Emesis Blue that no one else seems to mention (except great blue) is that the slaughter house has Impossible Geometry. Like you said in the video, the church has windows to the outside despite being deep underground, but also the elevator itself can’t work in the way seen in the film. The elevator would have to go through the Sewage Tunnels for it to work but doesn’t because otherwise the scene with Soldier and Sniper couldn’t take place
the entire place is really screwed up, with people and lights just straight up dissapearing, pits leading to hell, stairs to heaven, random monochrome rooms which make everything inside them black and white, dissapearing and appearing doors (like to the church) i personally feel its an overexaggeration of the hallucinations the characters may be experiencing, but then again this is easily disproven by jules being there and literally talking on a phone, getting himself a drink, being killed by jacques, and other stuff.
Emesis Blue genuinely changed my perception of BLU being look-alikes of RED to being look-alikes of RED and getting the short end of the stick on everything
canonically, BLU does win as often as RED does. The Meet The Team videos are apparently RED propaganda and BLU was supposed to get interview videos but the interviewer was assassinated. It's most likely just for marketing as red honestly stands out more and looks better on most of the mercs.
@@thesmileman6931 This comment (and by extension, Meet the Director) only fuels my theory/interpretation of BLU as "look-alikes that purely coincidentally have the same personality, profession, equipment and job" Also, BLU Spy looks better than RED Spy
Considering that the Blu mercs are completely different from the Red mercs This is not far off for Red Demo to be visually different by having him (half) blind
1:20:20 This is an EXTREMELY niche reference, but it's possible that the applauding crowd is a reference to a now sadly defunct webcomic called Nice Teeth. In the comic, there is a deranged character that goes around committing acts of chaos and murder in order to entertain a crowd of people that demand it of him, that may or may not be hallucinations. The creator was also adjacent to the TF2 sphere back in that time, so it's not an impossible stretch.
I think it's a testament to this guy's writing that he can turn TF2, just about the goofiest FPS out there, into a horror movie so mind-bending and legitimately creepy that people put it above a lot of Hollywood-produced horror.
Which is sad considering Hollywood used to care about filmmaking and art, which is what horror is in my opinion, art, beautiful twisted and terrifying art, but it’s very clear that Hollywood no longer cares about good films and good art and now only cares about shoving political ideologies(aka woke)down peoples throats, my hope is one day Hollywood will stop being overly political(or trying to brainwash the masses with social engineering)and start making good movies once again, but I know that’s just wishful thinking, at least we will always have old movies to watch.
@@NoahSylva-u3nbut Hollywood had always done this. In the 30s, there were so many remakes of silent films it was insane and the 80s was filled with pro-American, anti-Communist political sentiments. @@NoahSylva-u3n ok ok fair enough. I understand now what you mean, it's just the usage of "shoving political ideologies" and "woke" that have been frequently used (and abused of meaning) by right wing extremists online that it just rubs me the wrong way. I do agree that there's been a doubling down on politics in entertainment because of, as gaming animators pointed out, massive uproars because they're not the "correct" ideas of the modern day, as well as a decline in terms of execution and quality. But we do need these ideals shown in entertainment, even if they're not correct, to understand why they're not entirely good in society. And whilst there has been a sorta decline in terms of quality in entertainment, doesn't mean it's all just trash or mid slop, because it isn't. You just gotta actively find it now because most major studios won't promote it.
My theory why Fritz revives the first time: After being shot with the shotgun in the chest, the bullets go through him and hit his healing backpack (The one that powers his healing gun) resulting in a burst of his medicine not only enough to revive him but to Ubercharge him which explains why he got stronger and then suddenly became weaker Also you can see his backpack after he comes back to life
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Fritz's revival in the Conagher scene isn't because of this "Respawn Core," but seemingly something related to the comics canon. The "surgically attached souls" that people goof a lot about seem related to it, because of a detail I remember someone pointing out. In the scenes where Fritz is in a coffin, the candles seem to represent how many souls he has left, because there's less in the later one. That feels way too specific to be a coincidence.
You reminded me, Fritz ends up in coffins TWICE. First is his dream/hallucination where he wants out, second he does it on purpose to get the drop on Spy and steal the briefcase.
Also one thing I wanted to add onto this (with the scene at 49:50 where he talks about the McGuffin being the "respawn core") is that how I think there's a detail a lot of people missed. You know how in the movie, most of the characters actually have their gadgets like soldier's rocket launcher, pyro's fire resistance (I mean, even though he's more of a charred corpse he still survives being set on fire), and spy's invis watch? I think the reason why he comes back is because of a thing medic has. Compared to every other class, he's the only one with regenerative abilities. So personally, I think he comes back because of that ability he has. It does also explain why he is the only one that can come back on his own, while for heavy (or Stalingrad) someone else had to bring him back.
true. but what about heavy? SPOILER he dies, then he comes back thanks to the red medic, then gets a screwdriver in his eye, then gets rocket jumped and finally dies under conagher slaughterhouse's ashes. bro has to be indestructible
@@Dxuki well, the red medic presumably has access to the same tech that the blue medic had, which could include whatever is doing the healing. if the same stuff that is keeping medic alive is also going through heavy, a lot of the stuff makes sense. The blue medic and the heavy can take small arms fire, as seen with demo and soldier's confrontation with the heavy outside the armory. Him taking explosions could be explained with him just being beefier in general, and probably reducing the severity of the wounds, allowing them to regenerate somewhat (notice that he still has burns, but not any open wounds that a fragmentation grenade would inflict). But that regeneration still has a limit, as both still die, due to severe wounds that not even regeneration could fix, like a severe car crash or an entire building falling on top of you.
comics aren't canon to Emesis Blue it was only referenced (i.e.: the Gravel Wars still exists) but the entire plot is completely original apart from horror movie references
1:12 "We must not allow a respawn gap" Was also a direct reference to Dr.Strangelove as it was delivered similarly to General Turgidson's line "We must not allow a mineshaft gap!"
The fact this movie was entirely made in SFM makes the final movie all the more impressive ! And of course the characters, soundtracks, storytelling and references are just masterful.
Not entirely* some 3rd party animation sources such as Blender was used aswell. The filmakers attached the (SFM) tag so they could appear first on searches.
Not entirely but in large amounts probably. For example the blood pouring out of the Respawn machine. SFM isn't capable of simulating fluids. However SFM or not, it is most definitely looks like a SFM animation. Those sharp edge lights for example is something almost exclusively done by SFM Animators in SFM. So even if it isn't made in SFM (idk maybe it is) it at the very least has the dying spirit of SFM, you could say the Legacy of SFM, a program that is nowadays mostly superseded and many people don't even bother learning anymore.

The soldier, when talking about the Valium, says "i dont know. I never took any of it" because as in EMISIS DIAZAPAM, it states at 38 seconds under the "side effects" Memory loss, which can be assumed Soldier took the Valium and had memory loss.
That’s a good point, but I prefer the idea that he just simply never took them because he definitely doesn’t seem the type to blindly take whatever they give to him

It would be funny if the actual reason the respawn machine is malfunctioning is because Red Soldier accidentally teleported bread into the inner workings of the respawn machine
This could not be intentional, but I just thought of it (not sure if someone else has.) Jeremy tells Fritz, “If they ever hit you with something, you hit back twice as hard.” This is seen with Spy, but I just thought. One Conagher brother killed Fritz, so Fritz killed two Conagher brothers.
what i like about Emesis Blue is that it proves that you don't need a high budget, celebrity voice actors, or an entire team of professional animators to make a successful and valueable movie like this, what excites me about Emesis Blue is all the people who will gets inspired to make their own movies.
28:34 So a possibly of what the different thing is that it might be a corpse with it’s legs chopped off, leaving the head and the chest. Then putting it in the oven. The head and chest might’ve have come from Scout’s mom. Note: This is just a theory about what the item could be in the oven.
It cannot be Scouts mom tho, unless she had 2 heads, because in the same scene we see that something in the oven, we also see Scouts Moms head being dropped on the floor. Maybe it’s another Person we don’t yet know about?
When I first heard about Emesis Blue I wanted to watch it, but was in a pretty bad state because of depression and was having a terrible nightmares every night for a whole month. It took enough time to recover and few days ago I finally had a chance to watch it in peace and concentration. I. Absolutely. Love. It. It was not as scary as I thought (thanks god no jump scares here), but beautifully complicated (interpret it as you want). I love the references to "M" (I was making researches on Fritz Lang's films in university and absolutely fell in love with them). And at some point... this actually helps me to deal with depression. @@choppa8985 It's to get Fritz to go to the slaughterhouse and help Soldier and Jacques. Fritz needs some sort of motivation or provocation to go there himself, and the Undertaker knows that he cares about Jeremy and thus uses Jeremy for this purpose.
i'd like to think that when medic comes back to life and kills the conagher brothers, he actually activates the kritzkrieg that was fully charged in his backpack, which is what allows him to kill them so easily. it would be really funny if this was actually the explanation lmao
Man, that thumbnail image of that final, faded photo is SO haunting to me, probably one of the most chilling images in the whole movie. I dunno why, it's so simple, but there's just some aspect of it that makes my blood run cold... Also, that scene of Soldier's flashback to the trenches is INSANE to me for something made in SFM, that shit's worthy of an Oscar. Also also, I realized that Soldier *is* actually given a name. When Agent Stemmons is talking to him, he calls him "Mr. Doe". At 1:35:45, he says "He had his secrets, Mr. Doe." Referring to Archibald keeping the slaughterhouse from being demolished. He's still never given a first name though, and the name "Jane Doe" itself, much like "John Doe" is a term used to refer to a person whose true identity is unknown or concealed, often by police in reference to an unidentified corpse, and I've always found it somewhat interesting that not only is that what they use for Soldier's name in canon, but that they specifically go with "Jane", the feminine version. Not sure what any of this implies, if anything, but I found it somewhat interesting. Edit: Just saw the last frame, disregard that last tangent about Soldier's name
It is a crime how Film Theory didn't cover Emesis Blue before MatPat left, and they covered Skibidi Toilet... Edit: Lol, the Game theory video has less views than Emesis Blue.
I think that Stalingrad might be a reference to Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. A big bulky monster relentlessly chasing, getting more and more damaged as it progresses. Also definitely visually inspired by Mr X.
He's more similar to Mr X, the hat, getting pissed when it gets shot off. Even the way he opens the door when Fritz first breaks into the Slaughterhouse. Although I assume the wya he says "BLU team" to be a Nemesis reference
I like the Soldier cause he’s really the only one who survives everything, like, bro fought zombies, witnessed the horrors of the Respawn Machine, lost many allies and yk, could’ve blown himself up but didnt

At 44:33 when the scout attacks soilder, there's red fluid that disappears in the next shot. I was hoping it would be explained/talked about. You see it in the opening shot with the under taker. You see it right before soilder goes into the portal as well. Then again after the medic uses the respawn machine. I feel that red fluid has to be important.
emesis blue is what happens when a project is made for passion and not for profit. its a true testament to the meaning of art. great analysis video too
At 46:28 another explanation for Maynards lack of eyes could be that Fritz is hallucinating. He takes the same medication as Jeremy does for schizophrenia and it could be that as part of respawning his system is purged of any medication he had taken previously, thus he hallucinates a terrifying vision shortly after.
I would just like to point out, that the song Maynard plays on the Piano was actually changed at some point. The current version plays Blackbird by the Beatles; but the original release played the Toreador March. Given the song is about risking one's life for the entertainment of others while bull wrangling; and that the glory is worth the risk of life... it fit a lot more given what Fritz was trying to do; breaking into the Slaughterhouse to save Jeremy despite the obvious risk of death by the Conaghars; and heck... even the meaning of the song vs what Fritz was doing. It's all about Bull wrangling; while Fritz failed to grab the Wrangler and had to improvise, risking his life further... all for the entertainment of the audience watching. I'm guessing it was changed at some point due to either copyright issues, or because the Toreador March commonly nowadays gets associated with Five Nights at Freddys and a lot of people were specifically commenting about that.

a thing i noticed during the film is the spy charecter showing up in the soldiers trench flashback, he gets torched alive by a pyro, seemingly foreshadowing the eventual fate he gets burning himself alive after shooting the pyro
One part of the movie I've never seen anyone else mentionning: During the scene where Jeremy is at home and turn to see his mom's head, the camera shot puts him as the blue pawn stuck between the other chess pieces. During the war flashback Soldier experiences, he sees Fritz playing chess against the Undertaker. Look closely at the pieces. The Undertaker moves one blue pawn as an opening move. Imo, this could be interpreted as another clue of the Undertaker utilizing Jeremy in order to get Fritz to do his biding at the Conagher Slaughterhouse.
And potentially how, to win the "game" against the undertaker, the doctor has to participate in the game, stooping to use the same tactics of using other's lives to further his goal. Towards the end, he's done plenty of killing and not a whole lot of saving. And potentially at 1:20:05 he is reminded how similar he is to the undertaker/how far he's fallen (by receiving his cross and seeing the "Do no harm" bust that reminds him of his morality and role as a healer, then as a gut punch being applauded by the crowd dressed in black and white like the undertaker and his minions, right after having killed someone.)

Agreed. I typically don't like horror but the combination of fleshing out TF2 lore (albeit in the form of a fan-theory) and the existential crisis behind everything really sells it for me.
"Our true enemy has yet to reveal himself" - 'Cyclops' [1:29:44] I'm gonna bet the "true enemy" is whoever is in charge of Emesis Pharmaceuticals or Helix Technology. Hell, those two companies might even be under the same parent company and it's whoever runs THAT company. Also when Fritz died from the game of Russian Roulette the briefcase was also nearby and it didn't take too long to revive him the first time so maybe he actually came back then and just metal gear'd himself into Archibald's funeral casket. And finally I absolutely agree with your theory on The Undertaker's identity.

Also really quick, the kidnapper in M when complimenting the ball, the shadow walks in really similarly to the plague doctor when walking into the office at the start and the medic when walking into scout's house. also snipers usually go for bodyshots since theyre still lethal but with a larger target than a head. And with soldier's experience in the army he probably would know that instinctively without thinking
1:22:36 You know (maybe it's just a coincidence), looking at all of those zombie versions of mercs, it makes me think that all of this is a giant reference to Left 4 Dead The zombies in Respawn room - Common infected The Creature - Jockey The Hunter - Hunter The Smoker - Smoker Stalingrad - Tank
I like to say Emesis Blue and Pootis Engage are two examples of SFM being pushed to its limits but in very different directions. Emesis Blue pushes noir stylization and German expressionism. Pootis Engage pushes the visual stylization specifically replicating anime.
39:36 Funny thing though. He calls it his latest victim and it's played off as a joke but I'm pretty sure in tf2 lore that skeleton is actually the result of medic successfully removing someone's skeleton without killing them.
14:33 Just wanted to mention that I think the soldier who's eyes are bleeding (and probably missing) is another ref to The Jaunt, where the kid claws their eyes out after being put through the teleporter. The soldier likely did something similar to that while inside the respawner. Ik it's an obv connection but I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention it yet
1:51:26 another thing about the respawn core bringing medic back stronger is that he isn’t being sent through a respawn machine, which I would imagine would not directly give a individual access to the respawn core, but instead dilute it down somehow or only give them part of the core’s power. Not only is medic the only one intersecting with the respawn power, as he’s the only one to die by it, but he is directly next to the core each time. The only time he isn’t dead directly by it is in the coffin, which is why I believe he came back weakened/paler and more gaunt
it's interesting because he loses russian roulette next to the briefcase too, so why didn't he come back to life? I guess Spy took the briefcase with him. Or medic was alive and snuck into Jules' coffin, waiting for the right moment to strike. He did have a gun after all.
@@herothehedgefox This makes the most sense to me. He revived after the Russian roulette and snuck in, he was gaunt because he had been there for atleast days by that point and probably consumed by hallucinations and... Well, everything else.
1:32:30 It could be the 'enemy' cyclops referenced, and it's someone from soldiers past, or it could maybe be the 'smoker', and soldier is confused about how he got down there. I think it's the enemy cyclops referenced, however (the enemy cyclops referenced could also be the Entity referenced in the screen write, or whatever it is)
1:29:47 What cyclops could mean here is Helix Technologies themselves, he’s talking about the bigger company perhaps, “our true enemy isn’t red or blue it’s rather those who wear the shroud of darker colors, Archibald could be masking himself in these darker colors” but this is all speculation and could just my own crazy theory
It could also be a line referring to The Smoker,The Hunter,The Undertaker which explain the line of "dark colors" maybe its a representation of soldiers well being and how his innocence got crushes,in just one day
28:37 if im correct thats a leg of lamb which is a referece to a book called lamb to the slaughter (free to read online) it is a book about a wife who kills her husband with a leg of lamb, at the end of the book she convices the detectives to eat the leg of lamp forever getting rid of the murder weapon.
I have always thought about the implications of "merging" the memories of two instances that are forced to fight against each other. Like the Blue Medic and the Red Medic are essentially the same medic with mutually exclusive objective.
I've never actually thought of it that way. I've always thought that it was just the Emesis Diazapam taking over or some kind of entity that took over after he lost consciousness. Your theory could honestly be true.
Not too far into the video, and Richter might mention this, but I love how the movie uses colour to tell when something bad is about to happen. The colour red is associated with murder and death, the shift in the medics eyes show his violent and his normal side fighting for control.
"Where we're going, we won't need eyes." The characters most closely associated with death are eyeless. The two Engineer brothers who built and operate the respawn machine, and Dell who is apparently stuck in the afterlife. The Butcher and Stalingrad are blinded in combat. Then Fritz somehow loses his eyes in the crash, which could mean that the Undertaker is also eyeless because of the respawn machine (and if not, it's a hell of a missed opportunity).
What if that failed respawn photo of the person on fire at 1:24:40 was the butcher? I mean it would explain why he is STILL burned after countless respawns. Perhaps because the malfunction even the respawn machine can’t fix it
@@tickingmadly6032bro can you fucking imagine if the horrible thing you witnessed come out of the respawner was your own fucked up respawn I would shit myself 😂
@improbablyfur true but I feel like theres at least a slight difference between seeing your corpse and seeing yourself still burning alive, like soldier couldn't hear his own screams of agony at least lmao
Just my interpretation, but given the color scheme of the applause scene when Fritz kills the butcher, I think it may represent his evil subconscious winning over his good conscious self. His eyes are blue, which as mentioned represents his righteous actions, but the pews are glowing red. I think it shows the evil praising him for killing someone while he is conscious and in control.
1:03:38 There's a couple of well-frequented spy hiding places in that area on real 2fort, so I imagine it's a reference to the way spies lose tails in that area.
1:21:11 my interpretation of this scene is that the Black side is somehow using Fritz as a weapon, likely through hipnosis. I have no idea why they're clapping when one of their own is killed.
I think that the scene with the masked figures applauding correlates with the funeral scene. In both moments, Medic kills a burnt, masked man in front of a crowd. Medic having a vision of himself in the coffin adds to this in my opinion. As you said, Medic's appearance during the funeral is similar to Dr. Caligari, which may be an explanation for the file names.
1:29:55 I kind of always figured the weird Demo vision was referring to the Mann brothers, they technically hadn’t “revealed” themselves at that point in the movie, only Blutarch’s voice having been heard, and technically when you think about it, they really are the true enemies of every class, forcing them to fight and die in a meaningless war built on spite and pettiness, only to bring them back and do it all over again
14:27 “It’s eternity in there” is a quote/reference to Stephen King’s ‘The Jaunt’ didn’t realise it until watching this as I read that story after first watching Emesis Blue
this probably wont get seen, but i think the 45:21 blackbird part couldve been symbolic of the medic's revivals and the events that happen. blackbird has lyrics like "take these broken wings and learn to fly" which i feel like kinda ties into emesis
46:40 I think that's because the medigun backpack broke and spilt the healing material on him. I always assumed that's what happened, as it seems similar to the meet the medic scene where medic heals heavy. The wounds (along with the clothes) are slowly healed. It could also explain the boost in power, maybe it's uber?
The medic being the undertaker makes perfect sense since if you look at medics corpse he’s got blood coming from both eyes (the car at the end), and in the vision he sees of himself he’s missing both eyes, the undertaker has both eyes covered which is specific to his character.
I think it's worth to note, when fritz ludwig was trying to wash the blood off his hands, around the 33:18 mark on this video, I'm pretty sure that's a reference to the Shakespear play Macbeth. At some point in the play, Macbeth is struggling to wash the blood off their hands after killing the king, saying "out, damned spot". Now I can't remember what fritz says during that scene, but it'd be pretty cool if he said something similar.

could also be a loose reference to the "congratulations" scene from neon genesis
also could be himself trying to convince that he did the right thing by killing another person

When that movie came out there was a fear that movies were going to be replaced with digital actors.

Remakes and politics isn't anything new to Hollywood, it's just now people disagree with the message and are up-roaring (also they're being poorly executed)

@@_TSTFM_ whoa whoa whoa, you are way out of line, that’s not why I have problems with the entertainment industry at all, I always believed that films had politics in them and I don’t have a problem with blacks or gay people, no it’s the fact that now we are at a point when the entertainment industry double downs on politics in films and wokeness because of social engineering, we have activists in the industry trying to shape the minds of everyone, manipulating the people’s perception of reality.
My theory why Fritz revives the first time:
After being shot with the shotgun in the chest, the bullets go through him and hit his healing backpack (The one that powers his healing gun) resulting in a burst of his medicine not only enough to revive him but to Ubercharge him which explains why he got stronger and then suddenly became weaker
Also you can see his backpack after he comes back to life
alright sure, but what about the second time?
Probably revival crystal or something
honestly, i had thought his first revival was a nod to game mechanics, that being the Medic being the only class with regenerating health
But that regeneration still has a limit, as both still die, due to severe wounds that not even regeneration could fix, like a severe car crash or an entire building falling on top of you.
comics aren't canon to Emesis Blue
it was only referenced (i.e.: the Gravel Wars still exists) but the entire plot is completely original apart from horror movie references
1:12 "We must not allow a respawn gap"
Was also a direct reference to Dr.Strangelove as it was delivered similarly to General Turgidson's line "We must not allow a mineshaft gap!"

It also wouldn't be out of character for Soldier to just not take the Valium either

It's to get Fritz to go to the slaughterhouse and help Soldier and Jacques.

At 44:33 when the scout attacks soilder, there's red fluid that disappears in the next shot. I was hoping it would be explained/talked about. You see it in the opening shot with the under taker. You see it right before soilder goes into the portal as well. Then again after the medic uses the respawn machine. I feel that red fluid has to be important.
it's spelt soldier* not soilder (sorry if i'm passive aggressive, I get the spelling wrong all the time)

emesis blue is what happens when a project is made for passion and not for profit. its a true testament to the meaning of art.
great analysis video too
At 46:28 another explanation for Maynards lack of eyes could be that Fritz is hallucinating.

One part of the movie I've never seen anyone else mentionning:
During the scene where Jeremy is at home and turn to see his mom's head, the camera shot puts him as the blue pawn stuck between the other chess pieces.

Also really quick, the kidnapper in M when complimenting the ball, the shadow walks in really similarly to the plague doctor when walking into the office at the start and the medic when walking into scout's house. also snipers usually go for bodyshots since theyre still lethal but with a larger target than a head. I like to say Emesis Blue and Pootis Engage are two examples of SFM being pushed to its limits but in very different directions.
Emesis Blue pushes noir stylization and German expressionism.
Pootis Engage pushes the visual stylization specifically replicating anime.
Maybe not realism on Emesis part. Perhaps something like stylization in the vein of Noir styled films or German expressionism.
Ik it's an obv connection but I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention it yet
i just want to add that the ending scene with medic losing his teeth in the bathroom matches scout's nightmare he told medic in the beginning

The colour red is associated with murder and death, the shift in the medics eyes show his violent and his normal side fighting for control.
surprisingly he never mentions it
"Where we're going, we won't need eyes." The characters most closely associated with death are eyeless.

There's a couple of well-frequented spy hiding places in that area on real 2fort, so I imagine it's a reference to the way spies lose tails in that area.
Further time looping?
I think it's worth to note, when fritz ludwig was trying to wash the blood off his hands, around the 33:18 mark on this video, I'm pretty sure that's a reference to the Shakespear play Macbeth. At some point in the play, Macbeth is struggling to wash the blood off their hands after killing the king, saying "out, damned spot". Now I can't remember what fritz says during that scene, but it'd be pretty cool if he said something similar.
I'm like: "ah a video essay about Emesis Blue! Surely the video won't be longer than the entire movie itself"
The video: "longer thank you think"
