I love this. I don’t want to contribute to the overconsumption of clothing anymore. I wrote a research paper last semester on the environmental and ethical issues caused by fast fashion and It completely changed the way I approach clothes in general. I want to develop my personal style and have pieces that I love and can wear a million different ways. Thank you for this content it’s been so helpful.

Part of why I watch/love your channel is the fact that I know I can find information and Inspo that will be applicable and realistic for me too. It reminds folks that we exist, and that we are also beautiful and fashionable. 💖 would love to see more size representation/consideration in your videos in the future as well. 🤌🏽💖Thank you for the content and the work that you do, you are super fab, Laini!

another that i've been doing is equating the number of wears of an item to it's price when deciding whether to purchase it or not - for ex: if a top costs $15, i ask myself, will i get at least 15 wears out of it? obv it doesn't apply in all situations, but i've noticed that doing this has stopped me from purchasing super trendy items because ik i won't get much use out of them & has also forced me to invest a little more into pieces ik i'll wear again & again!

ur local goth guy here to give yall some more tips!!! if ur an artist (or even if youre not, you can always make stencils), you can get old black t-shirts and paint them with white fabric paint!! one of my favorite shirts (reverse bear trap on the front & the saw logo on the back) was one i painted myself!! another thing you can do to spice up your shirts is to cut the sleeves off/crop them especially if u like more masculine looking shirts!! along with that, you can use the extra fabric to cut out & make patches with!! patches can go on pretty much anything but i think they look best on pants, jackets, and bags. patches are always a great way to make things more your own, for example some of the patches ive made have been for my favorite bands & horror movies (little tip: you can look up patches online and if you see designs you like you can always re-create them with paint or markers instead of buying them or embroidering them yourself!). my style is definitely more alternative but i hope these help!!

  • @alexandriageiler687

Also another tip I would like to add is that you can still use fast fashion (like SHEIN) and be sustainable. It’s all about how you utilize fast fashion, for example if you buy only a few pieces that you need in your closet and will wear and cherish, that doesn’t contribute to overconsumption. Only buying trendy clothes that will eventually expire in a few months & tossing it is contributing to overconsumption.

    • @kmbrly222
      @kmbrly222 3 роки тому +23

yes!!! i think taking care if your clothes like how you wash them/store them etc is really important and helps with the longevity of clothes

    • @claudiamoragagullstrand77
      @claudiamoragagullstrand77 3 роки тому +80

Using the fast fashion that you’ve already bought yes, but buying new ones can unfortunately never be called sustainable. You’re still contributing economically to an unethical and environmentally disastrous industry. Also, if you do take really really well care of your fast fashion, it will last you longer, but it has literally been made to not last so longer = still not a properly long time for it to be considered sustainable.
That said, no one can be perfect and every single thing we do is better than nothing 💖

I started keeping my ‘special’ pieces in storage boxes because I used to sell everything so quickly and often regretted it! I also started to buy more high fashion (second hand) pieces, because I buy them more consciously and less often (I’m earning minimum wage, trying to spend less on trendy pieces). When I’m wearing my vintage Burberry coat I feel like a million dollars and I get so many compliments on it! I also borrow a lot of my boyfriend’s statement T-shirts, so I never buy those myself :). A good way of giving identity to your outfits is also trying to tie your style with something you like that's unrelated to fashion. For example music, movies, books, etc. And try to put together outfits that remind you of that.

I really like this video. Using what you already have is a great step towards sustainability. As an oldish person I can honestly say I often regret clothes I donated years ago. My advice on what to save and what to pass on:
Things it is ok to get rid of
    - anything falling apart unless it has mega sentimental value
    -cheap basics
-things that don't work for your body type (example, drop waist dresses look like hell on me because they don't work with my natural body shape)
-things that annoy you every time you wear them (example, off the shoulder tops just piss me off no matter how cute they are)
    -anything itchy or uncomfortable
    - maternity clothes if you are sure you are done having kids
    Things to save:
-anything with sentimental value (example, the top I bought to wear to my father's funeral)
-good quality basics even if the cut is currently out of style, it will come back
    - interesting trendy clothes that are in good shape, even if you can't wear them as trendy again they make awesome costume pieces
-things that can be altered to be useful (example, out of style jeans that can be turned into cut offs)
-one or two comfy, basic outfits to do messy work in like painting
-anything that will be hard to replace in the future (example, vintage finds)
-clothes that make you feel good every time you wear them and shoes that fit well
    - maternity clothes if there is any chance you will be pregnant in the future
-anything super classic that never goes out of style even if you are bored with it now, especially shoes (example, converse sneakers, denim jackets, doc martens, hoodies, Birkenstocks, black faux leather leggings, cardigans ect)
    - anything collectable like limited edition t shirts or sneakers. Eventually the might be worth a good bit of money.
-concert t shirts from any concert you attended, musical styles change but these are a piece of you history.
    Other consideration:
Everyone will tell you to get rid of clothing that doesn't fit you today but under some circumstances I disagree with that. If your size fluctuates often it is wise to keep some things in a size larger and a size smaller. It really sucks to gain 10 lbs, buy new clothes, lose 15 lbs, buy new clothes but end up back in the clothes you originally wore because you ended back at your original weight, I have totally done this! If this happens very often, like someone with extreme period bloating, combat this with clothes that can fluctuate with you. Things with draw string or elastic waists, stretchy leggings, slightly oversized tops, sports bras and underwear with some give to them. It is so much easier than trying to figure out what fits that day.
I hope this helps, I wish someone would have told me this 40 years ago, I would still have that glow in the dark, puffy Ozzy t shirt from when I saw him in the late 80's and the zebra stripe , also glow in the dark, Converse high tops from my punk phase. I think they would be such a look together now, lol.

i’m really happy to see a video like this. With the influx of haul videos, and fashion videos in general, it really imposes this want in the viewer to consume more. But often I feel hopeless enjoying fashion but falling into the capitalist trap of being unhappy with what I have leading to overconsumption within my financial ability, so this is sooo so helpful. Also, you have such a great editing style making it super fun to watch, and you have a really wondeful presence . subscribed!

One tip I have is organising your closet by colour and category. For the last few years I've had all my blouses and button ups in one section, then all of my dresses, and a last section for all my outerwear. I then have each section organised by colour. You can go darkest to lightest, lightest to darkest, or in rainbow order (which is what I do). This means I can always find my clothes straight away and I can easily find contrasting or matching colours for outfits.
I saw this tip on a UA-cam video and it changed my life. Sadly I can't remember who the video is by 😬

your tip to alter your clothes reminded me to buy buttons. seriously! i have a fantastic vintage white button up- think silver rhinstone flower buttons and a hint of gold thread. and it fits perfect- kind of a bell sleeve with a nice collar. i have really small shoulders so its hard to find clothes that fit, but “george stretch” did it right! anyways, recently the top button fell off and i havent worn it at all, since its pretty much and open top. i went and got some cute antique replacements that look similar to the ogs. all this to say i love your take on creating a sustainable, longterm use closet, whatever that means to you personally. making your closet your own, instead of a reflection of internet trends is the only way to really love your wardrobe!

I just found your channel yesterday after watching numerous videos where the girls contributed so much to overconsumption and fast fashion and it made me sick. Your videos were a breath of fresh air and looking at your whole channel made me so happy! I love fashion content and yours is so unique, ethical, inclusive and helpful! Plus you seem so fun, kind and like just a genuinely good person. You've gained a new subscriber and I'm about to go binge watch all your videos! ❤️

I am among the older crowd here maybe but some wisdom: Yes, the stuff I wore at 15 are trendy again (90s, y2k) and digging through my old room and wardrobe gave my current wardrobe a huge boost.
So make sure you invest in high quality pieces - it will come back in style 😊

I definitely used to be a shop new till you drop girl. Now, I'm older and buying new is so uninspired and just soulless for me. My closet now is still large, however, it's probably 95 percent from Thredup. I love buying secondhand. You find so many more amazing pieces that way. Prices can't be beat and it's recycling cool fashion! 😎 I am obsessed with button downs and denim right now. Tied at the waist or tucked in, leave a button or two undone, some great accessories and instant style!

Every once in a while I like to basically put my closet on shuffle and grab the first thing at one end and force myself to make an outfit with it. Then move it to the other end after I wear it

i saw that you put an inspiration pic of a black girl's hair and i really wanted to comment this just so you know how that is a GOOD thing that we don't really see often. like people will talk about trends and hairstyles and stuff without taking into consideration that not all people are white. I hope i didm't offend anyone with my comment, I tried to express myself as best as I could! so yeah thank you laini:)

I totally agree with changing aesthetics. I swing wildly between 90s grunge and cottagecore and have been getting better at mixing the two together. Plus getting things altered is the best and I color coordinate my clothes in my closet (which sounds very ocd and type A) which helps me choose clothes based on how I’m feeling that day.

Great advice! Alter your clothes if you can! I got two pairs of mom jeans hemmed and it completely changed the silhouette on my small frame. They went from looking kind of dumpy to being my favorite pairs of jeans.

One of my favorite things to do is take a spaghetti strap dress that is loose and loosen the straps so that the neckline falls much lower and put a cute t underneath. It has the same vibe as overall dresses. Also you can take the same spaghetti strap dress a belt/ shoelace and make a skirt. I like tying the shoelace around my waist, tucking the very top of the dress so it forms a skirt then putting a belt over makes it look like a legit skirt. If you put your mind to it you can transform your closet❤️

Idk if she mentioned this in the video (cz im writing the comment before finishing it)
Anyway, i saw this on tiktok, for when you have "nothing to wear", get a suitcase, put in it 2 shoes, 2 pants, 1sweatshirt, 1 shirt..(well it depends on you) and then manage to make outfits out of these clothes for a week and keep going
Its gonna make u creative and make a lot of outfits out of 2 pants and 2 sweaters or something
    I hope this helps

I've started to think more before I purchase something like "How many pieces in my wardrobe can I wear this with?" if it's less than 3/5 then no I won't buy it/ "How many pieces do I have that are similar to this" if it's more than 2/3 then no I won't buy it. (I'm not an accessories person but I have been getting into berets which I wear one often and longer earrings)

What I do: cut up, sometimes hem, done. I do Cosplay in which I make my own costumes, which usually entails buying stuff from thrift stores and altering them until it looks close enough to what I want, and the same can be applied to regular clothing.
