Having been through many, many closet clear outs, I really think that the things to get rid of are clothes that don't fit, make you feel awful, or are irreparably damaged. Things that you loved at one point but just aren't feeling right now is worthy of keeping in storage and bringing back out later if at all possible. I love that you didn't get rid of that sweater because you realize waists are going to change again. Cause they will!! Riding and cowboy boots were so out for a while and they've come back. As the great Vivienne said, "Buy Less, Choose Well, Make It Last."

I would add that you could keep clothes that currently don’t fit, especially if you know your weight fluctuates a lot. It’s sad when your weight changes but you’ve gotten rid of old favorites that would have fit & now you have nothing to wear.

as the daughter of her mother who kept all of her clothes even when they didn't fit her anymore i am a very strong advocate for keeping all your clothes. I have an entire vintage wardrobe for free and am planing to do the same for my kids.

just so you know, everytime i think about getting rid of clothes, i think of how you once said "you liked it at one point, you'll probably like it in the future." and my closet is beginning to look like your studio. so thanks?

I totally agree with the overall sentiment here BUT I do think people should let go of clothing they have had for years and haven't been able to wear because it doesn't fit. Personally having stuff like that in my closet was more depressing than inspiring so I had to let go. Had to come to terms with the fact that I won't have the body I had in my early twenties again.

I’ve been learning more and more that the pieces I am okay with getting rid of are pieces that are made of uncomfortable materials (polyester) and pieces that simply don’t look good because of fast fashion poor construction. I definitely am learning to hold onto clothes that don’t fit me because over the years my body fluctuates and I LOVE that when I’ve gained or lost weight i at least get to look forward to a “new” wardrobe of clothes I already have and love. So many pieces I regret getting rid of tho😢

Totally agree with the theory for most people, but I would add two big exceptions: when your clothes aren't your size anymore (beyond regular yearly weight fluctuations) AND when you live in a tiny apartment and/or move very often. In college, I needed all my belongings to fit in my Camry because I moved every 6-12 months.

You're so right about keeping stuff! Sometimes it feels like everyone says to only keep stuff that is heavily curated to your mood at the time of decluttering but I always end up going back and wanting things. With trends cycling so quickly it's nice to just be able to go shopping in your own closet for them. Being able to see beauty in something again that you once got tired of and not having that regret of why did I throw it away is nice. Nowadays I only get rid of stuff if I genuinely think it looks bad on me, I don't think it's good quality, or if it's something I'm not comfortable wearing anymore for modesty reasons. And even then I'm likely to still try and find a way to refashion them. Maybe I'm just turning into my mother, she never throws things out haha

Lately I've been putting away clothes that I don't wear in a bin where I can't see it and go through it later, I hate regretting getting rid of things just because It didn't look good that day or don't wear it as much

THANK YOU!! I have been doing this for YEAARS!! How many times I reloved items is insane. I have been keeping my skinny jeans for 5 years now in storage because I KNOW they will get back in style one day :) and there will be a day that I want to wear them again.

I feel this, I got rid of my basic cardigans (like the ones that are popular now) because in the late 2010s they weren’t cool anymore and also some long necklaces that I now I regret getting rid of. It was when minimalism was at its peak and it felt more like decluttering for the sake of declutterring, at least to me. Most of the things I declutterred I don’t miss, but there are some that I wish I had just kept! Now I store things I don’t feel anymore that I once liked and don’t want to get rid of away in a box.

I'm so pro the "save your clothes" message. Also the "mend and tailor your clothes AND repair your shoes" message. I dream of clothes swaps - legit, the girls at my church are doing one soon, but I get nervous about being one of the few there who can wear an XS/0 and maybe the only one with shoe size 5...like, I don't want to stick out if no one else can wear my stuff, you know? I imagine this concern applies to both petites and plus sizes. Maybe we need our own clothing swaps...

i love your take on this, i’ve been struggling with my closet recently because it has become unbelievably large (i’m a compulsive thrifter haha) and I’ll be moving out of my college apartment in a couple weeks so i’ve been slowly going through it all, listing stuff on depop, giving stuff to friends, etc to make the moving process easier. my style has changed SO MUCH this year, honestly maybe the most it’s ever changed in a year, and i can still feel it changing-the moment i feel it starting to settle, it changes again. on top of this, my size has changed this year, which has been sad only because i can no longer wear things i once loved. hence collecting so much clothing-just trying to curate an eclectic maximalist closet of clothes that fit exactly how i want them to. At the same time i feel pressure to get rid of stuff, ofc for the logical reason of moving, but just in general there is definitely a stigma around “hoarding.” (don’t get me wrong, overconsumption of fast fashion is not something i endorse at all, i get all my clothes secondhand). I don’t ever hear anyone point out that there is so much clothing in the world already, it’s not like anyone should have a moral obligation to get rid of something just because “someone else would wear it more” (if not a necessity item) and if anything there should be a stronger case to keep it, to figure out how to make it work for you if that means mending/fixing/changing it, or even if that means keeping it in storage. You saying that getting rid of stuff actually makes you want to buy more, rather than having the minimalist effect everyone says it will, totally resonates! i am absolutely here for the thoughtful hoarding ❤

some very good points here - espically about trying on clothes in the context of cute outfit and not with like old pyjamas - however i feel like some are more specfic to you, for example trying on outfits with a bra like you suggest would make no sense for me personally as have worn a bra maybe twice this year total
defnitely taking some tips from this video though :)

If something doesn’t fit or feel right, then I won’t wear it. I will donate those items. I don’t like when my sleeves are too short. And apparently, I am not the best at doing laundry. I have a way of shrinking items, oops. I don’t dry most of my items, but some slip through the cracks. Itchy fabrics are out and again that can be a me thing. I probably put something in the dryer that should have air dried. I am learning through your channel that buying quality fabrics are a key. Thanks for all your tips. I enjoy your content.

I have a good strategy to find out if you really want to keep it or not. Imagine spilling red wine on the piece of clothing. Will it make you sad and will you do the effort to get the stain off, or will you actually feel relieved, because you don't have to deal with that clothing piece anymore?

It kinda does feel like the “declutter” thing has become the new “haul” thing. As in, I see a LOT of influencer decluttering, downsizing, going “minimalist” content suggested for me in my feed and then sure enough …. The search for things to replace all the things they got rid of begins. I did a massive overhaul of my wardrobe about 7-8 yrs ago because it truly needed it. My wardrobe was a dumpster fire. I’ve slowly filled in some holes in the meantime but to be honest ….. I hang onto stuff I like even if I haven’t worn in it in years because I still like it. I like looking at it. I keep imagining ways I will wear it. If it doesn’t make me annoyed, it stays. I had a whole set of 50’s style tiny thin cotton cardigans hanging in my closet for years. I used to wear them and then stopped wearing them but I loved them so they stayed in their own little area at the end of my rail. Then one day I looked at them and realized it would be super simple to convert them into vests. So I did. Now I wear them all the time again. And yes, we all have loved scrounging around in our parents or grandparents closets and finding amazing pieces we’ve never seen them wear but they kept. Why are we denying our kids this pleasure? Trinny does this all the time. She has an entire storage room for all the pieces she doesn’t wear anymore but is keeping for her daughter. And her daughter is now of an age to start claiming them. That’s so special.
