it's crazy how negative we feel when we wear clothes that aren't our style! I remember I hated my high school senior photos because the photographer made me dress according to her style and not mine 😭

I think the distinction between feeling confident by looking “pretty” or like conventionally attractive and feeling confident because you feel comfortable and happy in your clothes is so hard to distinguish!! Something I’m still unlearning at 26. Loved this video, I hope this mentality is something that keeps spreading. It’s good for the environment, it’s good for creativity and individuality, etc etc

This is dead ass the most helpful fashion video I've ever watched! I have always tried to force myself away from the clothes I felt most comfortable in because I thought that's what I had to do to "find my style" and not be boring. But those clothes are my personal style!! Seems so obvious but this is the first time I've heard somehow explain it so clearly

Literally the same thing happened to me with the y2k trend, I bought a ton of stuff on vinted (similar to depop) because I saw girls on tiktok wearing it, although I normally mostly stick to neutrals. Some of them I haven't even worn once because I currently work from home.

me too, i was in online school so i'd wear a cool item once and then go back to wearing comfortable jeans n t shirts. as much as the style is really cute, it's still not functional for my life or flattering on my body!

You were preaching to the choir this WHOLE video!! I grew up deep in the suburbs of NJ and I got literal flashbacks when you mentioned being scared to wear things to school that the other kids werent wearing, it escalated for me too to the point where I wasnt wearing clothes for me, it was more to show others that I was ahead of suburban fashion lol. i think finding personal style comes with just the process of growing up and maturing! Im done with college now and feel more myself in my style than I ever have! and i no longer feel like i have anything to prove to the people around me! this was 12/10, love your vids :)

YES! For years my peers would just assume i was insecure about my body for wearing baggy clothes and all black all through out 2009-2014 when actually i just loved comfort. Even now, i'm 24 and i still love the fit of baggy clothes, i'm trying to accept and show a little bit more of my womanly body but baggy fits will always hold a special place in my heart.

Okay this seriously helped me wonder why I keep forcing myself out of my comfort zone. I lately have been trying to wear more crop tops and tight tops and more revealing clothes because I thought that was the way to progress my style and look better but whenever I’d wear it I’d keep adjusting myself, fiddling, constantly have my thoughts preoccupied with how I look and my posture. I would feel so uncomfortable and not confident but I just thought all of that was necessary growth for me to become more versatile in my fashion and stop judging my own body. But the truth is, the clothes I always go to, and always have since middle school, were baggy. So I don’t know why I would force my style to change especially when I’m not comfortable in tighter clothes.
Thanks for this awesome video. It helped remind me that you’re right, we have a fashion comfort zone for a reason and we sometimes need to listen to ourselves instead of push our own boundaries.

    1. Y E S, that first time (your nikes moment) is so important. For me it was wearing a gold chain and pearls as a belt on my skirt (90s chanel inspired) and people were like wtf but later it became very trendy to follow 90s runway aesthetic.
    2. Oh. When you said you instantly felt when a piece was "for you", no matter how many times you saw it - one time is enough, I had no idea how to describe that feeling.. and yet I always feel it when I buy my pieces. This is probably why I'm so into slow fashion and mostly ignore trends, I just need to feel that something is right for me before I buy it.

I think the real lesson here is to be bold in your choices and dont be afraid to take risks. Im 30 and I started on the high waisted jean trend years and years before my peers did coming out of being a teen in the early 00s when low rise was everything. People did make comments and give me shit about high waisted jeans and mom jeans and now look...EVERYONE is doing it. Dont be afraid to take risks. if you think something is cool, just wear it with confidence and you WILL be stylish!

When you said at the beginning of the video that you grew up in Michigan and nobody really cares about what you wear. that hit home for me because I moved from Taxes to Michigan my senior year of hs and I stood out so much because of my style choices that it made me self-conscious to the point where I started dressing like everybody else to not stand out an in turn made me completely lose my sense of style

1000% agree with you! Give yourself credit for branching out and being yourself. Goes to show when you were younger you liked higher fashion version versus basic trends/fashion. I was like that too wearing the boyfriend/mom jeans & hair in a claw clip with black chunky booties in 2015-2016. My roommates were like you look like a mom. But now they wouldn’t say anything. HAHA. Moral of the story BE YOURSELF (&some people have better taste than others😜)

I remember when i used tiktok and then one of my videos blew up i started wearing more of that and also more of like alt egirl i thought i liked those outfits because I saw it so much and it looked so cool
But now I know what style i feel good in are lacy feminine minimalistic clothes which are like the opposite of tiktok egirl alt clothes lol
A rly good tip is to think about what you liked as a kid
I loved japanese clothes and lolita clothes and bought one but never wore it i liked lolita clothes but it was too over the top for me
So i just chose some features i liked in lolita fashion and made it my style

dude, seeing your old photos made me want to recover my myspace account so bad lmao i’ve had a similar fashion sense in my middle/hs years. i was like 14yrs old in 9th(?) grade in 2010 and the moccasins, ugg’s and jordans were a thing. growing up in Brooklyn,NY in public school was amazing but also exhausting trying to keep up with trends. and i definitely had a hipster phase in 2011-2012. even now, i’m still evolving & this video just reinforced that that’s okay💞✨✌🏾

This is so honest, smart, and relatable! You're my favorite style person, I love your eye, whether it's trendy stuff and how to make it look cool, or your genuine day to day stuff, altho I prefer the latter. I totally relate to almost wanting to "branch out" and thinking that's what you're supposed to do, but you don't feel good in them, when what I really want to wear is something more muted, baggy, or casual - which doesn't make it unfashionable! I've learned so much from you, been inspired by you, keep wearing what you want to wear and show us how you do.

ive been living in jeans, cargo pants, hoodies and tshirts all from the men's section for like forever, and i always thought it was cause i was subconciously insecure about my body or something. and that isnt even true, i think my body is hot as shit. but that night just really really confirmed that i feel confident and happy in MY style and that i dont need to change to be conventionally attractive, that im cool as is. Have u ever thought about how growing up doing ballet has influenced ur style? I know for me at least, I gravitate towards more simplistic and almost elegant pieces that make me feel timelessly beautiful rather than trendy ones, which I think in part at least is influenced by my time doing ballet. I think a lot of people’s core personal styles stem from what they spent their time doing as a child and teenager

So i think a video talking about how to apply your style to different situations could be cool!

i remember getting torn to shreds for some chunky sole purple doc martens i had in middle school (i loved them! the band tee/canvas jacket/jaquard print skinny jean/docs look was very much middle school but also kinda fire) and by the time i got to high school everyone and their mother was in docs . and now that theyre so goddamn ubiquitous i don't even feel the need to get a pair like it doesn't say anything. i have a pair of studded platform crocs that feel way more punk than being another guy in doc martens . my style evolution is so fascinating to me as a trans dude bc i dressed really bold pre transition and then early transition i was like I Can't Wear Fun Clothes Or People Will Think Im A Girl and the process of rediscovering clothes i like that i felt i wasn't "allowed" to wear (for gender reasons, or parental influence, or size and shape of my fat body reasons) has been so wonderful (turns out i actually really like dresses and skirts of certain styles and showing off my belly n tummy hair is actually cool and hot i love being queer) . anyways. studs and patches and genderfuckery forever

I have a hard time finding enough inspiration to figure out what I like and don’t like. I mostly just see all of the trends and stuff once it’s already "in". Do you have any tips for finding more inspiration/ finding influencers and youtubers who have your same style? I can’t find any youtubers who’s style I relate to.
