i also feel like a "no buy" month really helps, cause if you still want it by the end of the month you can always go for it but it will definitely stop those impulse buys
I did almost a year of not buying clothes and it helped me a lot to realize my personal style. Actually thinking about making 2022 another year of not buying clothes, because I know I have too many and I felt really relieved not thinking about buying stuff almost whole year. I highly recommend this challenge
I did a no-buy March and I can confirm! I usually have a running list of things I like and I slowly cross things off over months if I still like them and end up buying or if I get over them. Also now when scrolling on Pinterest I try to reflect on “do I like this outfit because I’d wear it or because she looks good in this pic”
that explains the split dye trend lol bc maybe 2 years ago a german tiktoker had split dye hair and everyone mad fun of her and stuff and then a bit later it became a trend
yes! our brains are in love with familiarity lol. it’s scientifically proven too that if you dislike a song, but you keep hearing it everywhere, eventually you’ll like it
I started doing the “what I’ve always liked” in middle school before I was on Instagram and constantly in my head I had a true style. So when I buy clothes I ask “would middle school Lydia like this?” I’m so much happier now that I’m fulfilling my inner child. Not just in fashion either. Just listening to my inner child in general
I am definitely an outfit repeater now and IDC. I remember in high school it would be a crime to wear the same thing within a week of wearing it. The ONE time I did someone called me out and said “didn’t you wear that two weeks ago” lol
this is a really important message! when i was at my worst mentally i used to binge watch hauls and only consume influencer fashion/ algorithm fashion, i would want to buy so much stuff, i would change "aesthetics" constantly to try to keep up and fit in and honestly today i could not see myself wearing most of the cloathes i used to. i feel like on instagram we get pushed to consume the same items, that are being used by the same people, styled the same way, ALL THE TIME. there's a really cool article called something along the lines of "if an influencer is using it, i don't want it" bc honestly,is so tiring seeing the same trends over and over again shoved in our faces daily. and day go out of style so fast and then we end up having like..... 5 pink metallic mesh cowprint croptops that we only used once bc 5 different influecers used them for one instagram picture with a 20 off code. i love your channel cause you have an unique style and helped me find mine! laini you have so much fun with your styling choices and colours and chooses unique pieces and for me that's fashion and that's the key for being confident! that's why you content makes me so happy
This comment it sweet but it slightly concerns me I seem to be like what you said you were like and I am fully aware that i am in a bad mental state but idk this just kinda makes it seem more realistic It's good that your in a better mental state now and I hope your life continues to get better 💜🤗
the crocs thing is so true. im from australia and we've had crocs for years and we use them as the shoes you wear to put the clothes on the line or just around the house, never out in public, (maybe sometimes the beach). its so weird seeing people from the us make crocs trendy and fashionable, because they never have been from this side of the world.
Yeah, up until like 2-3 years ago, crocs were ugly, now everybody wants them. I still think they're ugly🤦🏾♀️ which is why I don't and have never owned a pair
Yeah I feel like this too from my household in the UK anyway. But also the point about ‘we all agreed they were ugly years ago’ - isn’t that the same repetition mentality? Like did you only think they were ugly before because everyone told you they were?
when you said "you are being influenced if you didn't like something the first time you saw it but now is growing on you" is SO TRUE!!! there are some stuff that I never liked and are now trendy and sometimes I realize that I'm looking at them and trying to convince myself that I like them when I don't, just because it "feels right" to like it. fortunately I'm now aware of it and gaining confidence to stick to what actually is my style
theres nothing wrong with getting inspo from trends and whatever, its just you dont have to shape youre whole life and style around it! whatever it takes to find ur own personal style!
I always liked the more edgy/casual style, I think the outfit I feel most comfortable in will forever be a leather jacket, baby tee or white t-shirt, lots of jewellery, jeans and boots, just in different variations.
Same here! I love trench jackets and leather jackets and ever since realizing what my comfort items are i invest on those pieces and i always have sth to wear haha
ok why was I just drunkenly telling my friends last week that I'm now sure Avril shaped who I am as an adult hahaha AND the pink and green we are the same
When deciding whether to buy something, I think to myself: would I rather have this item, or would I rather have someone hand me it’s price in cash? I also think about the longevity of pieces, and pick actual fashion influences from the past that I like, and stick to those regardless of trends. I’ve been on a seventies kick for a while now and it’s actually starting to come into style! I also try to only buy secondhand. In person. I don’t get a cart, I carry around the items I want, so I have to stop every once and a while and look through my selection and get rid of pieces. It makes me only get pieces I really love. Oh! And also! I keep editing this sorry. It’s important to know that you can think an item is cute and know you won’t wear it. You don’t have to/you WONT wear every item you think is cute. You have to know the difference between liking something and finding something that you will reach for and will fit into your wardrobe.
I hate the idea of limiting my wardrobe to one particular style - so I pick and chose what I like from different trends - gotta be functional and suit the occasion
I do get influenced by what influencers wear but only the outfits that I like. You can get inspiration from influencers but it has to be close to your style. Ask yourself do you have clothes that you can recreate what an influencer is wearing? Is it close to your personal style? Would you wear it even if it wasn't trendy? You can still be inspired by influencers but it has to be outfits you actually want to wear.
little shirt (literally any top, any color) big pants (white cropped linen pants) will forever and always be my style. the accessories can make it trendy. don't have time to try and fit these trends as a big girl!!!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! it reinforced some things i’ve been thinking but i just feel so glad that someone who is like an “influencer” understands the impracticalness of over consumption and only buying things you KNOW you’ll wear. whenever i wanna buy new things i’ll think back to this and remind myself to be conscious of how much ill wear it and how much i LOVE it to justify the purpose:) also i hope you’re okay after the robbery it sucks to have everything taken from you sending you love xx
when i was younger i always was obsessed with pink tones, aswell as fun prints and patterns, but also a good mix of neutral tones. now i have really started to see my personal style reflect that and i couldn’t be happier:)
tbh i am that person that likes a trend, knows that they will like it in 2 years and then waits for those 2 years for everyone to get sick of that trend to buy the trend cheaper 😂
dang I love this. I’ve been trying to find my whole style too and my friends never get it when I say “do I like it or is it trendy?” Excited for this journey lol
I haven’t changed my style much since ever. Like I’ve always loved super girly stuff- like dresses and the colour pink, and flowery skirts with white and blue cardigans. Like a soft girl kind of aesthetic. But I’ve also always worn cute jumpers and jeans and also hoodies because they are super comfy. Also love flannel shirts and tank tops. So like a mix. Oh and of course super cute dungarees like with sloths on and dinosaurs.
It really helps me to not be subscribed to any fashion newsletters, not watch haul videos and not be very active on Instagram and other socials. I get inspired (better word than influenced in my opinion) by people I see on the street! I live in a very international city and people have amazing style here! So many different styles as well
Yess love this video!! I'm so happy you encourage us to find out own style rather than encourage us to buy trendy clothes using a discount code. No shame to influencers who do sponsored hauls...there's a time and a place for trendy fun items...but this is so much more sustainable and uplifting 😊💕
ugh i'm in love with those slip dresses!! i haven't found good ones at my thrift stores in months, i love actually wearing them to sleep lmao, it makes me feel so regal!! also i've always been almost anti-trends, like i think some are cute but noticed for myself, they get oversaturated which makes them go "out of style" or i get tired of seeing them too soon, so i try to avoid giving into them and if afterward i like them, i give them a try
This video came at the perfect time. I was getting dressed and started getting stressed that I was repeating an outfit and was about to go online to buy the newest trends 🤦🏽♀️
For me, I really like them and I have for a while !! But I’m trying to not go out and buy everything that’s “trendy” because I’m sure in a few months everyone will hate those outfits. When it goes out of style I might pick up a few pieces I like though !!
It also helps to look at what pieces that have been in your closet for years that you still love and wear ! It gives you an idea of your own personal style and what you love to wear
That’s great advice about looking back to childhood! I’ve been thinking about getting a collared shirt-shorts set. But I’m like eh it’s a little masculine/don’t really see people in it… but looking back you would only catch me in cargo shorts and more masculine clothes as a kid. This is something I actually like!! Thank youuu
Oh my god. Yes, yes, YES!! I couldn’t agree more. Started to stop myself from constantly buying trendy pieces a couple months ago and I have feel in love with my style again & finding pieces I personally love at thrift/vintage stores❤️❤️
okay but this is actually so important ! i’m trying to be more sustainable in my everyday life but i love shopping so understanding what i GENUINELY love and gravitate towards regardless if it’s trendy or not is an amazing message :)
this is exactly what I needed! I was just watching mina le's vid on shein and the points she was making and u made on ur last styling vid about finding ur own style is all ive been thinking about for a week! totally gonna use all the tips u gave to find my personal style. love u laini and cant wait to see ur next vid🥰
Thank you for sharing this ! I’m doing my senior capstone at my college about trend acceleration because of tiktok and influencer lifestyle and our over consumption of trendy clothes. I’m really really excited for you to make more videos about this!!
honestly your channel has really inspired me. i was thinking a lot about what i was buying and often felt really bad cause i wasn't really appreciating what i had or aware of how much i consumed. i also thought about how my style was highly influenced over the years and have been trying to find my own style and feel confidence through that. your videos really helped me understand that sometimes its okay to not be trendy and that you could style various pieces in your closet so you can mix and match different outfits instead of purchasing new clothing. thank you sm for your videos honestly!
I’ve started modifying clothes that have lasted from when I was younger and I’ve made them into something I really like and will wear for a long time !
Glad you are sharing this piece of advice; so important for people to find their own unique sense of style. You had begun to promote trends & fast fashion--happy you are now staying true to what's stylish & most comfortable to you!
What helped me personally: 1) get high quality timeless essentials (I don’t mean expensive, but focus on materials, vintage denim and leather will last you for years) 2) if you want something expensive, wait for 2 weeks or a month and if you still want it than go for it 3) don’t hop on trends mindlessly 4) look around in the city/ school/ work at what people wear and get inspired by “real people” not online too 5) take into consideration your lifestyle and practicality too
This is so amazing!! Just as i was starting to wonder about my own fashion addiction and cravings to be trendy, your last video about personal style came up and this video was just at the perfect time!! Ty again Laini💕 I love this concept so much
this video was genuinely soooo helpful for me! i’ve definitely noticed that shirts that have certain colors or tv shows on them that i’ve always loved are more timeless than just a fast fashion trend that i didn’t even like in the first place. thank you for this video :))
I love this video so so so much. It gets so exhausting trying to keep up with “trends” and seeing them styled the same way over and over to the point where you feel like your style isn’t worthy if you are not wearing what these influencers are wearing! That mindset and cycle leads to you losing interest in the trend within a month or two also. It’s so important to dress for yourself & if you happen to really love a trend, re-evaluate if you actually love it or if you only like it because it’s been shoved in your face all over social media.
I think it’s a good thing that I got my personal style before Instagram, I see thinks I like on Instagram, but I never really want to look like one person.
love this video!! your videos have helped me a lot on finding my personal style and thinking about fashion in a lighter way. sometimes talking about fashion seems just superficial and brings out so many issues, but people like laini and many other youtubers and influencers that i follow make it such a healthier conversation and safe space. thank u so much for that laini!
This was amazing. you spoke about things that have crossed my mind but you said it soooo perfectly..... seriously just what i needed to hear to make these decisions easier for me
Omg thank you cuz I was on the literal urban website this morning looking at crocs and I was debating bc I never really liked them but everyone else is wearing it and all these influencers think they are cute. So thank you, and before this video, I was actually watching Mina Le's video about Tiktok and Shein and fast fashion and I really enjoyed both videos!!
This is so true i hate a bunch of shoe trends like sandal heels, huge chunky sneakers, & the hoof shoes 🤭 But i also used to hate Crocs & now love them honestly yeah cause i saw people wearing them with cute outfits so i don't think it's necessarily bad to be influenced! I was just bullied by kids to think they were ugly & embarrassing when I was younger 😬🥲
Love this omg!!! I am definitely moving more towards this. I love your take on finding a raw and authentic style for yourself by looking at your childhood faves.
Ur awesome, I'm trying to make my way there. So far, I've stopped looking at Pinterest a couple months ago almost subconsciously and it's helped soooo much! I legit have no desire to go back
10:28 lmao same, I don't really buy them but my dad started getting me shirts from places he visited or even places he didn't visit and now I own a bunch of tops with random places I've never been to.
I love that you mentioned cross because they are the bane of my existence and I can't wait until they go out of style 🤣 I was so confused as to why people started wearing them all of a sudden.
I've bought less than 10 items in the past 3 years because I've been wearing the clothes I already own. When it comes to buying something now, either to fill a gap or replace an item, I ask myself 4 questions: - is it trendy or long-lived? - is it easy to style? (with pieces I already own?) - is it practical/comfortable? (will I wear it often?) - is it sustainable? I don't impulse buy anything anymore, I usually leave the tab open on my phone and check back with it later. It gives me time to think over whether or not I really want to buy it. Buying fewer items has allowed me to buy better quality, more sustainable pieces that I love and that fit me well. I hope to have them a long time.
This is a really nice advice! This is why I love to go to second hand stores to find some trends, you can give a second life to a piece of clothing + you don’t find a trillion people wearing the same pieces ❤️💋💕!
Definitely seeing a change in your content and I love it! I think I’ve been trying so hard to find my personal style, that I’m lost in the sauce. Your tips will def help me on my journey. :)
9:51 this is such a cool idea! when i got my walls painted i got them magenta, white, and gray and i just realized how nice of a color scheme that is lol. im gonna incorporate it into my style now 🥰. tysm for making this video, its so important to be sustainable!!
I am loving these videos, this year I really wanna work on my personal fashion and style, so much so that I’m debating on whether I should switch up my UA-cam content. Anyway when you mentioned nature and colours that you are inspired by or music, it really made me think that how I dress hasn’t always been self expression because I’m worried I won’t look stylish & trendy
I'm so happy that you're trying to figure out your personal style really loved the way how you explained in the whole video . and yes thrifting or hand me down's are better than purchasing something that isn't going to last that long . as trends come and go . thankyou so much for making this video imma send this video to my friend so that she can find her style.*:・゚✧
No literally! Not many people mention the hand me down’s part. I’m always super happy for someone to give me something that I can then alter to me. To make it even more unique. ;)
@@chvrxmvrie same here! the hand me down's have their own story and it makes you feel even more happier cuz of that . ( it makes the piece more valuable )
we do not have similar styles AT ALL! but i follow ppl like you bc i enjoy how you express your style and it’s inspiring. and i appreciate how you don’t push skinny “aesthetic” videos saturated with self deprecating humor making you beyond relatable 💗
When I was younger I watched every kind of Scooby Doo, the movies, the different shows, and now my Scooby Doo shirt is my favorite in my wardrobe. I also find myself dressing like shaggy (kinda embarrassing) but he was my favorite
I’m really happy I came across your channel you’ve reminded me why I like fashion so much, it isn’t cause of all the new trends but the things that I really like, that speak to me and make me feel amazing while wearing. I don’t have to confine myself to aesthetics or trends but I can wear what I want and how I want and it’ll be my own style ((:
I don't like current trends such as the Y2K style or cottage core for example. I wear whatever I want but it's hard to figure out what I actually like vs what's just in my comfort zone
love everything about this! my best friend and I were discussing this topic the other day and we both agreed to move away from trying to keep up with trends and I felt such a weight off my chest, immediately !
you are now my favorite youtuber 😭 ive been thinking about what my “personal style” is for a few days now and i literally took notes from this video YOU HELPED SO MUCHH
thank you 4 this vid !!! ive been thinking a lot about my personal style and aesthetics so i think this came at the right time with the right advice ~ especially the one abt our tastes & preferences in other things
Laini I love how reflective you became! I was also getting a little bit repulsed (not by you but by the consumer monster in you and the content that resulted). I hope you don't lose sight of yourself in the future either!
i love this video!!! its so helpful, i needed to hear that "if you didnt like it the first time you saw it dont get it" haha. i also know smth thats helped me stick with the clothes i buy is shopping in a color range. i noticed i will avoid certain colors and graviate towards my pastels, so now i dont buy something if its not pastel. ever since ive done that ive loved everything ive bought way more!! i dont avoid clothes as much as i used to. idk if that would help anyone but yah ahahah
i also feel like a "no buy" month really helps, cause if you still want it by the end of the month you can always go for it but it will definitely stop those impulse buys
Omg YES

GURL , U R THE TREND THAT’S HAPPENING RN , do u know what I said when I was done watching ur vid , • I love her … she IS the moment • . PERIODDD
I LOVE U
@@LainiOzark omgg , didn’t actually think u would like and comment back :) everything I said was true tho !
Oh my god. Yes, yes, YES!! I couldn’t agree more. Started to stop myself from constantly buying trendy pieces a couple months ago and I have feel in love with my style again & finding pieces I personally love at thrift/vintage stores❤️❤️
I love vests but I'm not sure if I'm just getting influenced...
okay but this is actually so important ! i’m trying to be more sustainable in my everyday life but i love shopping so understanding what i GENUINELY love and gravitate towards regardless if it’s trendy or not is an amazing message :)
100% agree with everything you are saying. I also was over consuming and I stopped and it feels so much better.
this is exactly what I needed!
I’m really really excited for you to make more videos about this!!
honestly your channel has really inspired me. i was thinking a lot about what i was buying and often felt really bad cause i wasn't really appreciating what i had or aware of how much i consumed. i also thought about how my style was highly influenced over the years and have been trying to find my own style and feel confidence through that. your videos really helped me understand that sometimes its okay to not be trendy and that you could style various pieces in your closet so you can mix and match different outfits instead of purchasing new clothing. thank you sm for your videos honestly!
i feel like when i see someone wearing something i first thought was ugly it makes me rethink it if they styled it well
I’ve started modifying clothes that have lasted from when I was younger and I’ve made them into something I really like and will wear for a long time !
start getting influenced by influencers' brothers
Glad you are sharing this piece of advice; so important for people to find their own unique sense of style. You had begun to promote trends & fast fashion--happy you are now staying true to what's stylish & most comfortable to you!
LOVING where you've been taking your social media presence recently. So refreshing ! Keep killin it !!
What helped me personally:
1) get high quality timeless essentials (I don’t mean expensive, but focus on materials, vintage denim and leather will last you for years)
2) if you want something expensive, wait for 2 weeks or a month and if you still want it than go for it
3) don’t hop on trends mindlessly
4) look around in the city/ school/ work at what people wear and get inspired by “real people” not online too
5) take into consideration your lifestyle and practicality too
laini is so sweet, full of kindness and wisdom
I think it’s a good thing that I got my personal style before Instagram, I see thinks I like on Instagram, but I never really want to look like one person.
i literally went on youtube to look up capsule wardrobes.. perfect timing !!
😘
love this video!! your videos have helped me a lot on finding my personal style and thinking about fashion in a lighter way. sometimes talking about fashion seems just superficial and brings out so many issues, but people like laini and many other youtubers and influencers that i follow make it such a healthier conversation and safe space. thank u so much for that laini!
Omg, would u be ok with telling me those other UA-camrs? Ik Laini, Alli Vera, and Hitomi
I'll have to check out her video ASAP!!! But so happy i could help
This is so true i hate a bunch of shoe trends like sandal heels, huge chunky sneakers, & the hoof shoes 🤭
But i also used to hate Crocs & now love them honestly yeah cause i saw people wearing them with cute outfits so i don't think it's necessarily bad to be influenced! I was just bullied by kids to think they were ugly & embarrassing when I was younger 😬🥲
Love this omg!!! I am definitely moving more towards this. I love your take on finding a raw and authentic style for yourself by looking at your childhood faves.
you’re glowing in this!!
would love a make-up tutorial if you feel like it! or also a girl talk video of some kind
I’m never influenced by UA-cam influencers. I critique them. I have my own style and only shop at certain stores…
Yes Laini!! this is exactly right!! thank you for using your platform to speak on this! Love u xx
Ernie’s mom is glowing!!!!
I've bought less than 10 items in the past 3 years because I've been wearing the clothes I already own. When it comes to buying something now, either to fill a gap or replace an item, I ask myself 4 questions:
- is it trendy or long-lived?
- is it easy to style? (with pieces I already own?)
- is it practical/comfortable? (will I wear it often?)
- is it sustainable?
I don't impulse buy anything anymore, I usually leave the tab open on my phone and check back with it later. It gives me time to think over whether or not I really want to buy it. Buying fewer items has allowed me to buy better quality, more sustainable pieces that I love and that fit me well. I hope to have them a long time.
This is a really nice advice! This is why I love to go to second hand stores to find some trends, you can give a second life to a piece of clothing + you don’t find a trillion people wearing the same pieces ❤️💋💕!
And the pieces are more timeless, they last so much longer. It’s something so fun about the whole hunting aspect to thrifting.
i love the direction you're going into!
Definitely seeing a change in your content and I love it! I think I’ve been trying so hard to find my personal style, that I’m lost in the sauce. Your tips will def help me on my journey. :)
NORMALIZE "outfit repeater". We had priorities, we just express ourselves not to impress others. Hi! I'm a new subscriber here! 💖💖
9:51 this is such a cool idea! when i got my walls painted i got them magenta, white, and gray and i just realized how nice of a color scheme that is lol. im gonna incorporate it into my style now 🥰. tysm for making this video, its so important to be sustainable!!
loved this so much and needed to hear this. i too have been feeling this way and have been keeping track of how often i’ve been purchasing things
Let's make shaggy core a thing
I’m really happy I came across your channel you’ve reminded me why I like fashion so much, it isn’t cause of all the new trends but the things that I really like, that speak to me and make me feel amazing while wearing. I don’t have to confine myself to aesthetics or trends but I can wear what I want and how I want and it’ll be my own style ((:
God I loved crocs as a kid. I used to wear them all the time. News to me that they were fashionable. I just always wore what I wanted
I don't like current trends such as the Y2K style or cottage core for example. I wear whatever I want but it's hard to figure out what I actually like vs what's just in my comfort zone
I relate to that Avril Lavigne story so much hahaha I was obsessed with her growing up, and I still love her!!!
love everything about this! my best friend and I were discussing this topic the other day and we both agreed to move away from trying to keep up with trends and I felt such a weight off my chest, immediately !
yes!!!! fashion is such a good form of self expression and while trends can be fun to me that’s not true fashion
you are now my favorite youtuber 😭 ive been thinking about what my “personal style” is for a few days now and i literally took notes from this video YOU HELPED SO MUCHH
Yay! Thank you!
When I wanna buy something I think sustainable, budget, and what I really love and makes me happy
THANK YOU PLEASE PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THIS
thank you 4 this vid !!! ive been thinking a lot about my personal style and aesthetics so i think this came at the right time with the right advice ~ especially the one abt our tastes & preferences in other things
i love this!! i’m currently rebuilding my wardrobe and trying not too buy stuff that i know I won’t wear in the future💛
Honestly this might be one of my favorite video of yours
Awh thank you!
this entire video had me going PREACH 🙌 i finally found my personal style this year, and im so happy 🤍
Laini I love how reflective you became! I was also getting a little bit repulsed (not by you but by the consumer monster in you and the content that resulted). I hope you don't lose sight of yourself in the future either!
i love this. it's very tempting to jump into trends easily but this video reminded me to try to explore more whats in your wardrobe !!
I really like your content and this video is what I needed. This is new. I really wish your plateform never stop growing. Love from 🇫🇷
i love this video!!! its so helpful, i needed to hear that "if you didnt like it the first time you saw it dont get it" haha. i also know smth thats helped me stick with the clothes i buy is shopping in a color range. i noticed i will avoid certain colors and graviate towards my pastels, so now i dont buy something if its not pastel. ever since ive done that ive loved everything ive bought way more!! i dont avoid clothes as much as i used to. idk if that would help anyone but yah ahahah
Omg such a good tip!!!!
I agree with so much with these points and it’s refreshing to hear an influencer speaking about it love you 💗
Can fast fashion be over already...can we look back at fast fashion and think eww that was a bad trend.
my room was painted pink and green when i was younger too!!
i could hear you rant on forever, loved the concept of this video
exactly what i needed right now! thank you laini
loved this! getting so overwhelmed with fashion trends coming and going so fast
LOVE your style and that you're doing this!
