Dire Straits were probably one of the best bands at changing volume and tempo repeatedly throughout a song and bringing out every subtle nuance in their performance. This is what live performances should be like. Even if you're not a musician, there's something that everyone can take out of seeing and hearing something unique. It also allows the players to avoid being overcome with boredom -- playing the song the same every night. It does, however, require that the band have that deep connection and know how to play together, and play off of each other. This is a clinic in how to do that. Utter brilliance!

otoko mae Agreed, some exceptions happen at times. I can add another genius playing furiously while on stage- Carlos Santana. Best on the stage. I always dance to his marvelous music. I love latin dancing !!! Cheers !!!!
+Witold Banasik To me Stevie Ray Vaughan is the artist that improved the most while on stage. Played better, more creativity and showy things like playing with the guitar behind the back, above the neck and with his teeth (Jimi Hendrix did as well). I think Mark Knopfler culd be both worse and better while on stage. I think he could be worse as he sometimes changed the song way to much. In this version he absolutely killed it though and made it better than the live version.
Half of jimmys live performances were him high as fuck. Knopfler imo is a more precise and clean guitarist, he never makes mistakes and he knows how to make his guitar sing
It's simply one of the greatest ever rock songs. Perfect, timeless. Whenever it comes on in the pub, randomly, someone ALWAYS breaks the conversation to say, "How GOOD is this?" -only for everyone to agree. The video is a bit fuzzy, but the camera guys are on it. Magic.

this song is the best of DS...and the best performance ever from all the band members...specially from Mark. What a great guitar solos...what a display …what a performance. Heard this song thousands of million times....and I will until the end. Superb! Amazing!
There are nights in the life of every band when everything just works...all the musicians are on top of their game & everything comes together perfectly...this is one of those nights!
Seriously this. I mean, Mark is awesome no doubt, but every single one of the band is giving it their all. The drummer is on fire, they're having fun on stage..everything just works. 💯👌🏻Seriously wish I was there.
Well put..I think a Rock Symphony like this classic if we can call it that is much harder to pull off given the blistering pace and the all too high probability of messing it up so easily and just once..may be a better trained ear can spot some minor inaccuracies in the workmanship here but to the average fan, this is just flawless. And doing it live on stage with no chance for a do over or re recording is just icing on the cake...how supremely talented they are individually and collectively !!
Hear, hear stewartmac1. I'm an old London rock chick, veteran of so many live gigs. This one was special back in the day and 40+ years on is still bloody special. Mind you, I never went to a gig at Hammersmith Odeon that wasn't special. xxx

Agreed, some exceptions happen at times.
Minemilx
Agreed. Stevie was an incredible blues-rock guitarist- one of the best in history. Sadly enough he passed away so so early. Cheers, mate !
Half of jimmys live performances were him high as fuck.
Knopfler imo is a more precise and clean guitarist, he never makes mistakes and he knows how to make his guitar sing
Drummers never get their credit! This man was unbelievable .
'Insane' is another adjective that comes to mind.
Terry Willians
Williams the drums as they call him in Wales.

Yes, he really tied everything together and made the band sound really tight, especially in the end part.👍👍👍
What a great band. The guitars sound incredible. The drummer is unreal ! One of my all time fav songs.
Don't forget the keyboarder!
Could be the best band ever. The tallent hear is ridiculous
Social Conditioning, it is all fake stuff. Alchemy live...says it all
Terry Williams best drummer on the planet
@@switch12345678He is unreal
It's simply one of the greatest ever rock songs. Perfect, timeless. Whenever it comes on in the pub, randomly, someone ALWAYS breaks the conversation to say, "How GOOD is this?" -only for everyone to agree.
The video is a bit fuzzy, but the camera guys are on it.
Magic.
Musik Oscar für den Schlagzeuger🥁🥁🥁🥁
These guys are in a class by themselves - and that drummer is INSANE!!
Terry Williams underrated animal
Mark Knopfler playing the Guitar 🎸 makes everything else disappear
@@italogabriele534 drummer definitely makes himself heard it’s awesome when you put em together
Fantastic live version of this great song. Wish I'd been there that night. If you were then you'll never forget that night!

Perfect, Thais is guitar fantastic, i Love this is!
Troppo bello
Awesome guitar solo
I was there! Amazing 23 July 1983 London Hammersmith Odeon
The guy at the drums is royally bossing this.
That drummer is on fire! Amazing. I wish I could single out the drums and hear just him. The man is totally in control.
Hes actually not. His time changes when he pays fills. He speeds up slightly. Its a no no in the drumming world.
Mark knofler one of the most talented lead guitar/ singers in the 80's. dire straits rocks

I'll forever consider Pink Floyd as my favourite bande to play live but I have to admit this is the best live performance I've ever seen
I'm 76 and I'm still amazed with this guitar!!!
For me this is the best version! Never gets stale. Now approaching 70yrs, difficult to find other live songs with such near perfection😎😎

Still a masterpiece 40 years later. I like listen to it again and again ...
C'est vrai, dire straits est un groupe, le groupe de pop/rock de ts ls tps. Merci à toi, Mark de ns faire vivre et revivre de tels instants. La génération actuelle devrait prendre modèle sur ce groupe.
mythique.
I gotta get my daily fix!
Almost the best live performance in history, thank you Dire Straits
The thing with Sultans Of Swing is, most of the time this song is performed live it seems to be way better than the studio version, live version have something that makes this song extremely special.
Not the version to post that comment on
... I'll skateaway ... that's all
this is how real rock'n'roll supposed to work.
For me the crowd in the background bring it to life
its a faster tempo
One of the hardest melodic solos ever. Full of different techniques. I don't know if anyone ever mastered this solo beside the great Mark Knopfler.
He has said even he struggles and would argue he never gets it right. But he may need to see this video before making that statement
Incredible version of this song. The whole band was on fire!
😊
And they were playingTOGETHER not trying to prove something against each other. The way they looked at each other and smiled.
There is no better version on net.
One of the Best live versions of sultan of swing My dad and myself love this version of sultan of swing
Not only that, one of the best live performances of any song.
*ESPETACULAR*

No other song in my 73 years of life has rocked my soul as much as this masterpiece, Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. T
Great number, indeed. I was considering Job from the Bible... He was in "Dire Straits" ... I had to hear Sultans of Swing one more time!
Maybe Just maybe R.E.M. Loosing my religion...😄😁😆
i could not agree with you more. simply amazing. i have heard it a 1000 times . never tired of it.
A song that will be eternal.

I’m 84. This is just the best guitar music of any age. I bring it up often ‘cause it’s so darn good!
The GOAT for any age. I’m right behind ya
Terry is a beast on drums holy shit.
Mark is titan with that Strat.
You don't forget that keyboard guy = sensational.
Glenn Hayes Terry Williams was and is the best drummer they ever had.
Glenn Hayes This is not a strat, it is a schecter

They win. Stop!
After 36 years NEVER EVER forgotten just how good this is! Tight. Magnificent! Um, WOW!!!!!
There are nights in the life of every band when everything just works...all the musicians are on top of their game & everything comes together perfectly...this is one of those nights!
Yes 🥰💕
Mind you, I never went to a gig at Hammersmith Odeon that wasn't special. xxx

The drums are terrific
This is literally a masterclass in rock drumming dynamics.
Drummer has a nice conversation going, please end!!
Early Dire even just on CD is awesome. Drummer I took for granted all these years. First album was the best for me, Brothers In Arms later classic. I dont know all those music type terms I just know its special. What I grew up listening too, I will leave listening too, kids today don't know Jack!!!
listen to some grand funk railroad
Terry Williams is a beast! At his best here
@@hsvgts4349 Never been one to really give the drummers a lot of credit other than in solos, but this dude totally drove that song from front to back, kudos for the rest of the band for keeping up with him, you could even see Knopfler looking back and smiling several times!
Watching this video over and over. I've heard Sultans of Swing and opened Dire Straits. I've watched this video - and like them even better. One of the best live performances I've seen.

@@rosilenerose7115 somos 2 , são maravilhosas , tanto a banda quanto as músicas .
I remember the explosive sensation of greatness that I felt the day I first heard this version and I arrived at 06:56 and the final solo. It was as if someone had opened a hidden door of light and pleasure in some part of myself. I was shivering, and I thought it was too good to be true. That's what music is like, I guess.
