as a 15 year old guitarist..i totally agree
I think I agree, but I didn’t hear what you said after 'No debate.'
Do Foo Fighters count as a GenX band?
@DavidRachlinMLIS i dont think so
I’m 52 years old, and I couldn’t disagree more. We have a lot of great music, of course, but we also had a lot of real crap that no one remembers or talks about. And that’s true of every era. The 60s have the Beatles and The Who, but they also had the Doodletown Pipers. The 70s had the Eagles and Led Zeppelin, but they also gave us the Osmonds. In the 80s we had Van Halen and Dire Straits, but we also had vanilla ice. Today there are some truly amazing bands like Tame Impala and Warpaint. The reality is that every decade produces a small amount of great music and a ton of crap that is quickly disposed of. But everyone believes that the music they were listening to between the ages of 15 and 24 is the best music of all time because it’s the soundtrack of their lives. It doesn’t matter if you were 15, 50, or 80: the music of your late teens will always be at the top of your playlist.
Mark Knopfler: he'll play the song a hundred times and every time it will be different, and every time you're gonna love it

Crazy to think that this legendary song only came out a couple weeks before this performance. I was listening to the build-up, wondering why the crowd wasnt going bananas, but this was probably the first time most of the people in the crowd actually heard it.
Yes sir, this was the first performance of this song....that I am aware of. And I was there. Gad to go to summer school after this, U was a bad boy that year.
28th of June according to google, so quite literally a couple of weeks. Mustve been mad hearing this beast of a tune for the first time at a LIVE concert
0:27, And yet, at the beginning of the song when Sting started, crowd got a little hyper.
Think this was the first ever performance. And the song was released before Live Aid, but it wasn't a hit until after Live Aid, so would have been pretty unknown.

Unpopular opinion: the guitar is godlike but the drums at the start make this song totally epic.
I agree I love the beginning of the song with the drums the problem is the most of the radio stations don't start the music started with that they don't let it play out
Totally agree brilliant intro with the drums. The guitar with Mr. Knopfler well no words needed 👌
Funny story, the guy playing the drums played with Dave Edmonds/Rockpile/Nick Lowe. Literally his entire contribution to this entire album was only the drum intro. They hired a session guy to replace all his drum tracks on the songs other than the intro to money for nothing. Having to live that down would have been rough for me, to say the least
as the drum sounds of Van Halen, another level.

I love this song but it's hilarious having the idea to play Money For Nothing at a benefit concert.
Lol good point
It actually makes sense. The original song was written to rub it in the faces of less successful people complaining about musicians getting to be rich. So it only makes sense that this song is played at a charity concert, to rub it in the faces of the people who complain about giving money to people who need it.
@Dual Shock "it's hilarious having the idea to play Money For Nothing at a benefit concert." - Not really, provided your attention span extends past the song's mere title...
'Music for nothing and this gigs for free.'
You may be over-thinking this. Back in the day Money for Nothing was just a song about some t**t being unhappy about a rock band making money out f their music.
This concert was legendary, there will not be another one like it.

I thought U2, Dire Straits and Queen were the standouts at Wembley. U2 changed the tone of the day when they came on and played "Sunday Bloody Sunday", they were the first act that day to have real weight and presence on stage. Dire Straits had the best musicianship, and gave the tightest performance of the day. Queen, well they had Freddie, even though he wasn't at his best vocally, and the band played good, but nothing out of this world...it was all about his showmanship, and onstage charisma to involve the crowd. Ultravox, Sade and Nik Kershaw played very good sets also.
@@jesineri1213 I was watching it live. Queen stole the show, hands-down. There were other good sets - this one in particular as well as U2s set - but no one rocked it like Queen and that was known long before any movie.

Ive seen him live twice. In 1986 and 2011. And if he ever goes on the road I will see him again in a heartbeat. True story my friend saw him jamming at the local pub here in Melbourne in 86 on his day off. He had a couple of guys from the band with him. I wanted to punch my friend in the throat.
This live version it's fantastic!
Bring back Live Aid with these awesome guys!!!!
Someone said : "Live Aid wasn't just Queen"
Best comment ever!!!

Stranger on the internet, you have stumbled upon a masterpiece!
No I searched it up and yeah Dire Straits is Criminally Underrated
Rsos deve ter morrido todo mundo
right?
remember when concerts were..just concerts?
No sjw b.s.
Hands down one of the performances ever. Wasn't till I got a bit older that I realised that techno rave was just a phase. This is real music
Very amazing and magical, the combination of 2 legends of all time in the best live aid ever. The music of those years was really something else, it is really sad that this kind of real music is not repeated anymore. Sting's humility proves that he sings as a backing singer. You can listen and enjoy thousands of times. May God protect both of the myths.🙏❤
My parents went off to Portugal for the summer holiday and I was meant to go too as I was 17 but I refused and stayed at home simply because I wanted to be at Live Aid. It was one of the best decisions of my life. What a concert! Never be one like it, the talent on stage in that one day was off this planet.
I can't imagine what that day must have been like, congratulations on being so lucky to live a part of the world's musical history
Good choice!
Best decision you ever made.
Truly the best decision you could have made. You have those memories and those could never be duplicated.
Unreal story
There isn’t a speaker in world to play this intro enough loud
Great tune
Well there was one, but Marty McFly blew it up
Agree. Mine is already set to max and still not enough. Bass groove esp when the beat drops is insane
Amen to that
Mines pretty good
Watched this very performance LIVE at Wembley in '85. Amazing! Mind blowing!
Mark Knopfler one of the best Guitarplayers on this planet
I was fortunate enough to be alive when these guys were at the top of their game. I will be forever grateful!
You and me both - words can't describe how grateful I am to have been a teenager in the 80s
@@mgparis me too thats the way i did it
Same dude! It was a great time to grow up in.
Lucky! I was born in 98. Missed out on so much good music.
I'm so old I saw the Temptations at Disneyland in the early "70's. I got to go to so may epic concerts. I've got all of you youngsters beat, I was born in the '40's.
I had a job in 1985, delivering TV's, Refridgerators, Washing Machines, Tumble driers etc in Norway, and my co-worker always played this music in our truck. Cool!
JK L haha
You should have learned to play the guitars. You should have learned to play them drums.
Look at them yoyos!
jJKL IF YOU FINISHED THE 3ed grade you wouldnt have to use your back to make a buck
That ain't money for nothin. This song's about sellin drugs or playing music for lots of duchats.
That drum solo in the intro is just filthy!!!
Who's listening to this masterpiece in 2024? ❤
Mark Knopfler, and his unique way to play a electric guitar is just amazing.
* called finger picking buddy...
Live Aid 1985 was an absolutely brilliant moment in Rock history!
Bob Geldoff who'd organised the whole thing, watched by the world, was left thumbing a lift on the M1 that night when everybody had gone!?????
@@saltspringrailway3683 Incredible! I didn't know that.
Who's rocking into 2024 with this forever badass tune??
