Lyrics:
You get a shiver in the dark
It’s raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you don’t see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he’s strictly rhythm he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene
He’s got a daytime job he’s doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they’re fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain’t what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
‘Thank you goodnight now it’s time to go home’
and he makes it fast with one more thing
‘We are the Sultans of Swing'
#DireStraits #SultansofSwing
The Sultans of Swing has got to be one the best all-time songs of our lives!
It is
It really is along with a few others and some tom petty songs bob dylan etc for me

Thank you for saying this.

yeah, but who is still listening in 2024
Definitely
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, in my opinion.
I never get tired of listening to this solo.
Yea I totally agree his skills are unique and unmatched
It's a shame the video cuts the majority of the second (and best) solo out.
@@tehcyde I know, right
@@tehcyde Really.
he's a great guitarist in the most untechnical and unsophisticated sense. i.e. if you're incapable of exploring guitar into the technical realms like metal and jazz, then it is incredibly easy to see why you think he can be such a candidate for one of the goats
50 years of stage presence without any big frills, jumping around or showmanship. Pure brilliant music that I can listen to every day
Would you more carefully describe your issues with "jumping around or showmanship"?
@@MyOneFiftiethOfADollar he just doesnt like it i guess. Why not. Some like some things and some dont
Completely agree
@@MyOneFiftiethOfADollar If it was Carlos Santana jumping around while playing the guitar in his younger years, I have no complaints, LOL

Music doesn't get better than this. Timeless classic.
Why did they chop off the ending...that one of the best parts is the guitar solo.

Damn they good
There's something about this song... I don't want it to end.
It's a masterpiece, nothing I have heard quite captures exactly what I feel like when I listen to it
captivating,, I am 50 years old now...you wouldn't believe the feelings we get when the track was first realesed in my younger years.
I'm envious of that.
Seldom do I have that feeling for songs released nowadays.
Classic rock seems to still be the best genre.
Just swing.
You are a person of class
One of the tightest rock songs of all time. A classic.

Mark knoplers guitar skills bring me to tears.
Plays some of the most beautiful melodies.
I dont think he gets the credit he deserves.
He gets a lot of credit. Anyone who knows anything about electric guitar players usually consider him to be one of the best at it.
Their collaborative "Neck & Neck" was definitively bona fide. Why Chet Atkins didn't bestow C.G.P.-status upon Mark Knopfler (& certain other notables)...we'll just never know...
Oh he does
Best era of music industry ever
Mark Knopfler is a criminally underrated guitarist, musician, and virtuoso. That solo is top 5 all time in my opinion.
I agree with you man🤟🤟🤟 and he’s my favourite artist too!
Shame they fade it out in this video!
he do not like fame at all. he is a monk of music
Dude, the whole song is a solo. It's in the top 3 man
Not sure he's underrated. Isn't he acknowledged as a virtuoso?
For years I've been complaining how radio stations keep cutting of the last solo on this track so I never get to hear the best part of this absolutely brilliant track - and now I find out DireStraitsVEVO does the same?! WTF? This track is missing the final (and best) minute - why on earth would you cut that off? The song was too awesome intact?
Because the videos are not uploaded with the enjoyment of listeners in mind. Pretty stupid.
Yeah, but still. It would've required extra effort to create this incomplete and inferior version. Why go to the trouble?
Calle Söderberg Yeah that's weird. I also noticed some of the riffs are a bit off tone.
Absolutely and completely agree Calle
The prodigy
Gotta get some beers. This is the old blues rock ❤❤❤

not everyone can play guitar AND sing like that, mark has a talent
search up john butler funky tonight... he's got bloody talent
no offence to mark he's a great guitarist but he is only playing chords when he is singing
The problem with singing and playing is not about the chords, it's all abouth RYTHM.
The right hand is what matters.
If you pay attention, John Butler is always fingering a fast and repeated pattern when he's singing, except for a slower riff at some point. Nothing different than what Mark Knopfler is doing. They're both great musicians. Talent? I'd say it's more about practice till perfection.
Also, Mark is left-handed but his right hand is incredible.
Peace.

That is my defence, apart from an army band lyre, against an Amish condemnation of music as ‘Dionisiac’: Nietzsche uses the term to mean “ecstatic nutter”. What you are describing is why we can be proud of our commitment to it - ‘Apollonian’: the rational considered *mind*

67 here. Our generation got the best music. There will never be any better.
In your opinion, boomer.
Now be quiet and go teach some Maths problems that no one will ever have any use for.
You tried to sneak in your children's generation 😅
I'm age 68, and while I love many of the songs from "our era" including this song, I also love recorded songs from every other era, from the 1920s to current, across and within all genres including Classical, Ragtime, Jazz, Blues, Big Band, Rockabilly, RockNRoll, Surf, Latin, R&B, DooWop, Country, Soul, Rock, Hip Hop, show tunes, and even Sousa marches (as a guitarist, I play from them all).
Tis always a matter of "in the eyes of the beholder" (or, in this case, "in the ears").
Amusingly, the parents of us Boomers said THEY had the best music of all time; and our grandparents said that THEY had the best music during their era.
"Musical prejudice" is okay...but to believe "the songs I like are the best songs ever made" is naive if not arrogant, dontcha think?
@@joesantus1663 You're right. I'm 15 and from Spain, and this music can be clear and easily understood, even for a non-native speaker. Nowadays, and especially in Spain, where new musical genders like Latin trap and "Reggaetón" have appeared, this music is highly valuable, while Trap and Reggaetón are music that are not elaborated and with a simple, unworked rhythm base. This music is precious

One of the Best son with two solos at the middle and at the end.
I love how they're so relaxed, really enjoying what they are doing.. I will never tire of this song.

I'm 50 now. I've been hearing this song since I was a little kid. I didn't realize for so many years that this song is a masterpiece. The guitar work is amazing and flawless. The vocal sound from Mark fits perfectly with the mood the instruments create. Having a band that tight behind the lead guitar work of Mark, makes it perfection. There's no repetitions in the song. It's a complete story from the start to the end.
you describe in perfect way my feeling when I listen this song
