Gran Turismo 7 PS5 - 120Hz Patch - Four New Performance Modes Tested

- Patch 1.31 for Gran Turismo 7 doesn't just offer a bunch of new content, it adds an additional four performance modes to the mix - and they're quite special, with individual resolution targets depending on whether you're looking for a flat-out 120fps on a non-VRR screen, or a more balanced mix of smooth performance higher pixel counts if you are variable refresh-ready. Here's Oliver Mackenzie with all the details.

Playing GT7 in VR with a Logitech G Pro wheel has been one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.
It is too bad that so few will buy a Playstation 5, Playstation Plus and Playstation VR 2 only for Gran Turismo 7. Maybe the new Armored Core will have PSVR support?
Lol nobody is interested about vr

Same here - using a thrustmaster t-gt2 in VR is just phenomenal
So with GT7 we get tons of tracks, hundreds of cars, VR version and 120 frames. What an amazing work by PD. What a jump from the PS4 to the PS5.
"tons of tracks and hundreds of cars" has been par for over a decade AAA driving games (GT and Forza, etc). VR is only able because Sony decided togive it another try. Every major PC racer has VR as well (Race Room, iRacing, Auto Corsetta or whatevr it's called, etc). 120fps is defintely cool though, although Forza 8 will most likely end up having it as well after a few upfdates after release. What Polyphony needs to focus on is user experience/ "fun factor," which is somewhat lacking.
GT7 is a pathetic excuse for a GT game, the single player experience is one of the worst out of the entire series.
But the jaggies “lol”.
@@originalityisdead.9513 I'd argue perhaps GT6 was worse. But yeah, the single player part of GT7 is quite bad.
@smokebomb.exe yea for a casual like me the car unlocking system is very stingy. All the cars look beautiful but you can spend countless hours trying to get them or pay literal hundreds of dollars for like 1 car. And yea the fun factor is lacking - im not drawn to the 20 lap or hour long races. The great technology is there and thats awesome to see. The music rally is certainly a half-baked attempt at an arcade experience
Unlocked framerate with full 4K is so sick. Well done Polyphony.

This was exactly my experience until I beat the main game. Now all the races are much harder and take too long.

GT7 has quietly become one of the best games around. Paired with a driving wheel and PSVR2 it truly becomes a remarkable gaming experience.
This. It's become the one game I come back to almost every day. Such a wonderful time
It's because the bar is so low and its competition isn't much better. This game is still pretty mediocre compared to what came out 10+ years ago and it feels like just now it's starting to be what it was supposed to be last year.

I'm amazed Sony didn't target every major retailer, or gamestop, and let the public try GT7 in VR.
The thing is the first tries it makes you sick. I needed a week to adjust. You really have to want it and believe in it 💟
@@eSKAone- speak for yourself. It was awesome at first try for me.
im still going fingers crossed that this is still just a soft launch of the vr2 since it released in february, hoping to see a lot more of it later on, especially during the holidays
@skooterboots I was thinking the same thing. It seems like they are building a library for a Holiday push and potential price cut later in the year. It wouldn't surprise me if they also had some big Holiday games, seeing as they have lots of games rumored to be in development, with VR modes, like Twisted Metal and Wipeout, and then there's the possibility of Half Life Alyx coming to the sytstem
I don’t think PS VR2 is sold at retailers over here in the Netherlands. So far Sony exclusive so I could see that retailers wouldn’t even want to support such a campaign.

I was waiting (and hoping) that DF would make a video about this so to know the differences! Really great!! Thanks❤
This is awesome, I’ll definitely circle back to check out the resolution + VRR mode. Thanks, Olie!
That's the best Mode in my eyes 👀
The resolution mode with ray tracing is my favorite way to play. Usually hits 70-80fps plus and no perceivable tearing with VRR. Been really enjoying GT7 since I got it last month! Great breakdown on this video
Same here, waited till they ironed out most of the kinks and have been really enjoying it
RT is not in-game 🤔 Its only replays.
My favorite, too.
But there is no ray tracing.
Resolution/Ray Tracing using 120hz VRR hits a full 4K at over 60fps.
But it gives up raytracing in replays to do so.
Someone didn’t watch the video
Thank you so much for this analysis! They could've made these 4 options more clear to the end user, especially the difference in pixel count between the resolution mode with or without VRR.
Finally! I've been waiting for this

Absolutely love playing this game in PSVR2 with the Thrustmaster Gt2 wheel and pedal set. I do own a 120hz LG C1 OLED tv, but I won’t ever see the benefits of this update, as I have no intention of ever playing the game again in 2d flat screen mode.
Same here, i can't go back to playing this game or any racing game for that matter on a flatscreen after playing GT7 on the PS VR2

I love this game. Since patch I have been playing with resolution mode on 120fps on. I tested my frame rates and was happy where I was. Loving it at 60fps, so 80-100 was amazing. Not losing graphic quality is icing on the cake. I’m glad you guys confirmed the actual resolution etc, because I wasn’t 100 sure but now I won’t stop and think about “does it look the same?” Lol
The resolution is definitely lower if you compare the screenshots in the print article. Not sure what exactly is going on, but the 60 fps mode has more steps/better blending on edges compared to the 120fps VRR mode. I count at least 50% more vertical pixels on a given edge comparison. I don't think Oliver Mackenzie is as good at pixel counting as the other DF crew.
@@kdm7820 While playing it’s so close I can’t tell. I am sitting about 7 feet away from my tv though.
The 120hz resolution mode needs the TAA settings from GT Sport PS4, dial down the sharpness to improve the sub-pixel aliasing. GT Sport PS4 ran at 1080p and had superb TAA.
Framerate 120Hz:
1260p / 120fps
Resolution 120Hz:
1440p / 110 - 120fps
Framerate 120Hz + VRR:
1440p / 110 - 120fps
Resolution 120Hz + VRR:
4k / 70 - 120 fps
and from a driver perspective in pure terms of lap times, on a time trial has anyone tried already which one deliver best results ?
If Resolution 120HZ + VRR is 4K, something is different than the 60HZ modes as it is noticeably more aliased and pixelated. Not buying a one-for-one full 4k at 120Hz, no matter what setting. I have since switched to 60 HZ as it is a much cleaner image.
@@kdm7820that's what I'm tryna tell people! It's not true 2160p on any 120hz setting. 1440p is absolute max. People spreading a bunch of bs around. 120hz is nice for the motion smoothness but it's not worth the resolution drop at all imo.
Another fantastic video Oliver! 😊
Great video, thank you!
Surprisingly my favorite psvr2 game, don't even like racing games but love this one in VR.
Would have been awesome to see a 90hz version on PSVR2 ❤️
I play it everyday in VR since PSVR2's launch. It's clearly smoother when looking for example out the side window in motion. It's minimum 90 fps now in my opinion 💟
I've beeb playing GT7 almost every day since launch, and this has been my favorite update yet. It was so immediately noticeable. So much smoother, and it might be my imagination, but I think even the menu load screens are faster. It is just beautiful.
That being said, I wish it would go back to ray tracing for replays and other game modes. The actual racing is great at 120 fps, but I want it to be beautiful also when I'm not driving.
Finally, I was waiting for this
Even though im not a person that can currently appreciate these modes, its incredible that they exist and will be useful in the future. Playing your favorite games with enough frame-rate improvements paired with vrr is definetly a reason to play them again.

Fantastic work Olie! I have high hopes that we see a 120fps mode for PSVR2 down the track considering the continual work Polyphony are putting into the title. Great to see.
Does the psvr 2 have that refresh rate?
@ronaldkasteel3459
Yes, the PSVR2 is 90-120hz.
But I highly doubt a high graphics game like this would ever be able to reach that.
As is, GT7 runs at 60fps in VR, reprojected up to a higher fps, which causes ghosting on moving objects.
It's not terrible, but it's there. Same with Horizon Call of the Mountain.
Reprojected fps gives you the smooth look you need in VR, but due to the blurring ghosting effect things don't look as sharp as it would when running at a native hertz.
So if GT7 can't even reach 90fps in VR, there's no way it could reach 120fps.
This makes me hopeful a 90hz VR mode might be coming down the road!!
Might have to pick up this game finally have loved Gran Turismo games for a long time
love the idea of high pixel and unlocked fps ..❤
I'd be interested to know if there are any noticeable performance changes when changing the PS5 output resolution from 4K down to 2K or even 1080p.
I’d assume unlikely as it’ll just downsample as if it was a higher resolution image being downscaled to a lower resolution display. With my Series X I haven’t encountered a single game that doesn’t just downsample its higher resolution to my 1080p screen.
Great video. Only complaint is no toggle for RT in replays.
So I just started my game development journey with unreal engine 5 and I cannot believe how much digital foundry has primed me to know the terms I need to know in terms of graphics. Kudos to DF
watching racing games gameplay with the ideal line aid hurts my eyes :D.
Good job mister, you guys are doing a really good job highlighting these updates !
On a 77" OLED TV i found there to be too much motion blur at the old 60Hz mode, so I was thrilled to hear about this 120Hz update. When I enabled it the extra clarity of the motion was nice but the shorter draw distance was noticeably bad. However I didn't know there were four combinations of modes in total, so I'll see if I already had it in resolution mode.
Audio volume is quite low (compared to almost every other YT video).
Great video as always (even if the quality of the driving makes me want to cry)! I'm really enjoying the resolution + 120hz + VRR mode, I think it's a great compromise between visual quality and framerate as the bump to the fidelity of motion is appreciable. While I can live without ray traced replays, it would be cool if they gave you an explicit toggle for that in each mode.
So why not the frame rate mode at 120Hz with vrr? What's the difference between them?
Great video.
one little nit pick to your almost perfect analysis.... 120Hz VRR Raytracing is enabled in the replay mode.... actually quiet impressive! (that´s why it drops sometimes even below 50 fps. it seems to even lock the game to 40fps if it drops below 48 fps. it seems to be the case in the garage and café car model view modes). Thx for your amazing work!!!!(as always!) would be great to see fsr2 implemented to smoothen out the performance modes an maybe even to get an in game RT mode!!!
Gran Turismo is such a vibe. Forza 8 is DOA.
I really like just watching my cars in the garage or in dealerships with Ray Tracing enabled sometimes, even if I have an LG C1 with all the good stuff (120Hz + VRR). Already tried all the 4 modes before this review and noticed even the small aliasing in the Resolution Mode+120Hz+VRR. But the lack of Ray Tracing in menus and replays was the most disappointing thing for me tbh ☹️ these two things made me go back to Resolution Mode+60Hz since the visuals are the most important factor for me, at least in GT7. I hope they'll add 30fps Ray Tracing in menus and replays when using Resolution Mode+120hz+VRR (and possibly improve the image quality to match the non-120Hz mode) so we'll get the ultimate GT7 experience. Maybe they'll keep that for a possible PC release(?). Great review as always DF ❤️
Good vid and annoyingly enough it makes me want a VRR monitor that much more. Did you notice if VRR 120 Resolution mode also retains motion blur?
Love you guys content. Unrelated to GT 7 but when reviewing fighting games could you include input latency test for each console? I ask because input latency is very important to us in the competitive fighting game community and is the primary basis on which we decide which platform to use for tournaments.
If you trying to compete just get a PC . Consoles aren't good for competitive low fps and lots of input delay.
@@demoflow PC isn't used for fighting game tournaments because of cost, consistency and manageability. Fighting game tournaments aren't single game tournaments and aren't funded and ran by the developer/publisher unlike the rest of esports the only outliers are smash bros and brawlhalla. Smash due to sheer community size and dedication though still grass roots cuz nintendo hates us and will shut down any tournament they dont like and brawlhalla because it's the only game where tournaments are funded and ran by the dev plus game originated on PC and the dev can afford it so that's what they use. The major tournaments easily get 300+ entrants for a single game and run at least 5 different main event titles and span 3 days usually run friday-sunday so to minimize cost and have performance consistency we use consoles. Then consoles also have a smaller range of potential issues that are also easier to fix and don't need performance calibration so they are easier to manage as well.
@@drehm1011 havent competed in fighting games for a while . But I get what you're saying specially if these tournaments aren't big. @@demoflow yea that's why we have a tournament standard for which console we use.
Yep. It's such a huge omission from DF. FPS games can have locked framerates with high resolutions all they want but if the input delay is bad, you'll struggle to even find word of mouth, especially since a lot of players who care about this already invested in PC's these days anyhow.
I hope Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6 and the rest of 2023's fighters aren't giving you guys 5+ frames to contend with...

Great update overall, but I do not think the 120hz, resolution, w/VRR mode is visually equivalent to the 4k/60 fps mode. The 4k/60 mode has an overall much more stable appearing image. There's noticeably weaker AA in the 120hz-res-w/VRR mode particularly visible on white road lines in the distance and what appears to be evidence of some kind of reconstruction at play (looks like checkerboard) if you look at the lined appearance of the ghost cars in time trials and the road surface on some tracks (e.g. Mount Panorama) when the sun is low.

@@TheBean87 i think he is acting a bit like a fanboy but it isn't really the same though. There doesn't need to be parity between ps4 and ps5 version of the game. While there needs to be parity on series S and X. Also the reason why they are not releasing Balders gate 3 on xbox for now. Because they have problems wiht the series S
would be great to see another assessment on dying light 2. it received a ton of amazing patches and is the most stable game right now with RT, Dlss3 frame generation, especially considering the Open World nature with extremely vast views. No hiccups, no stutter... pretty awesome!
Flesh light in vr is incredible.
8:43 Awe...man thought we going to get at least 90hz on the PSVR2 😮💨 Still a great and fun game though.
If u need to check if the game is at resolution 1440p or 2160p just turn on 120 with quality mode VRR and plug to your Tv HDMi 2.0 (for 1440) than to Tv HDMI 2.1 (for 2160). U wll see that it is 4k 120hz VRR and that the edges are much better on hdmi 2.1
I hope this gives Turn 10 another reason to implement a 120hz mode in the new Forza Motorsport for Series X.
Now if only they could get it to run without reprojection in VR. Dont expect 120fps, but something like native 90hz/fps mode maybe.
Impressive
I am hoping a future update could include VR2 at native 90 FPS.
I play it everyday in VR since PSVR2's launch. It's clearly smoother when looking for example out the side window in motion. It's minimum 90 fps now in my opinion 💟
I had read somewhere to get 120Hz on the PSVR2 , is you must turn off the 120hz mode within the system preferences that supports external screens, and boot Gt7 , and then select 120hz in GT with the headset on.....
A convoluted approach , for sure... But be interesting to see if this does allow 120hz on the PSVR2
The only missing is making the game playable in offline enabled mode, nother than that it's a decent nostalgic racing game.
