Hi Ho again Simon … thank you for your replies. Share another thought or few with you and your subscribers re my added experience and dealings with the Bach 2-6-0 mogul. Bachmann did not design its mogul with thought in mind to having it pull numbers of 1:20.3 AMS cars, which are much heavier than Bach rolling stock/coach cars. My mogul initially struggled pulling even 3 AMS cars; however, now the pull is 5 AMS cars (boxcar, flatcar, 2 coaches, short caboose) without significant (observable) strain. The variables impacting upon pulling performance are significant re all manufactures’ engines and cars, not just the Bach mogul. Attention to reduce on track “drag friction” needs to be focused upon lubrication of engine, tender and car wheels (most important), clean engine wheels and clean track to improve traction, degree of track incline if any, and drag related to wheel brushes for car lights. Obviously, there is a maximum limit to the number of cars any engine can pull successfully. For my Bach mogul the limit is the 5 AMS cars referenced above; each of the two AMS coaches weighs in at 6lbs. The 5 AMS cars are a heavy pull!
    Cheers,
    Dr. Ric

G'day Simon ... have to get back to you re the 2nd generation Bachman Spectrum 2-6-0 mogul. Thoroughly enjoyed your video, and, per your video recommendation, I jumped to Al Kramer for the mogul, me a return customer to Al; he dutifully complied with a thank you, Ric! Yes, beautiful, but with pros vs cons & likes vs dislikes. I had the two older (20yrs ago) Bach Spect, 1:20.3, moguls, my wife's favorites of all my 1:20.3 engines at the time. I sold both a few yrs ago along with all my non-Accucraft and AMS stuff - needed a downsize. I have 10 AMS 1:20.3 Jackson-Sharpe coaches, two of which are the green D&RGW (a combine and passenger), and thought, as you expressed in your video, a "match" with the new Bach Spect 2-6-0 is exactly what I need for the two "orphans!" Upon getting the mogul, I seriously thought about getting a 3rd AMS, green J-S coach - I am glad I did not now; reason on that shortly. First, am I pleased with the mogul? Yes. I agree the coal load is a bummer, and I changed the appearance from tender front to extreme rear by gluing fish tank gravel (look-a-like black coal) over the plastic coal load. What an enhancement - worked magnificently! I added a sound board (also from Al Kramer), and three Rail Road Avenue, 1:20.3 scale, figures to the cab to replace the Bachmann "funky" two figures; a nice match indeed. Next up is "weathering" to dull the shiny but well done Bachmann paint job. The engine runs and sounds quite nice & good - happy guy. Now for a few words of caution (the cons) re the 2-6-0 mogul: (1) Connecting and disconnecting the two separate wire units from engine to tender is not a "slam dunk," and disconnecting is daunting. If connected successfully, the fit is snug, tight, thereby making the disconnect a struggle. Attempting a disconnect by tugging on the wires is a no no. A disconnect is to be pursued with engine and tender on their sides; using one's thump or a probe, initiate a back and forth motion to prey the plug out of the tender receptacle; yes, a struggle. Suggest strongly that engine and tender remain interconnected and removed from and loaded onto the track together as a single unit, thereby avoiding potential damage re a problematical connect/disconnect.
    (2) The new Bach Spect 2-6-0 mogul is not a "big hauler," by that I mean the motor is not powerful enough to pull a large number of cars, at least not my AMS cars. The big, big disappoint for me was the struggle pulling my two AMS Jackson-Sharpe coaches, each of which weighs in at 6lbs, with added cars! Add a third 6lb coach? No way! After several trials involving various numbers and types of cars, I finally came upon an acceptable combination that worked but with a struggle and strain on the mogul: a compromised Bach Big Hauler flat car with plastic wheels (not a beauty but does serve nicely as a "load" car), one AMS boxcar, the two AMS J-S green combine and passenger cars, and an AMS short caboose, all with D&RGW road name. Five cars maximum; six cars if the two AMS J-S cars are left out of the mix. The weak pulling power of my mogul was not anticipated, and this is the personal disappointment. I would recommend Bachmann to use, if possible, the same motor used in their Spectrum K28 engine - a wee bit late however! Despite the slow, struggle pull of my 5 cars set attached to the mogul, I am pleased that the Bach Spect 2-6-0 mogul has provided renewed meaning to my two "orphan" AMS J-S coaches.
Thank you, Simon, for all you do. Stay young, look both ways, remain vertical. Cheers,
Dr. Ric in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA,

Apologies for a mistake I just became aware of in my above comment/reply to Simon's video re the Bachmann Spectrum 2-6-0 mogul. The mistake above is my listing of 5 cars associated with the mogul; the correct number is 4, minus the boxcar. Ideally, I wanted to include a boxcar, but inclusion of the boxcar, even if I excluded the flatcar, was to much weight for the mogul to pull without stalling out. So for me, successful pulling power of my 2-6-0 mogul was limited to only four cars: one Bachmann Big Hauler flatcar (with plastic wheels), two AMS coaches, and an AMS short caboose. A severely restricted, successful pulling power associated with the Bachmann Spectrum, 1:20.3, 2-6-0 mogul.

  • @richardbroadwell7990
    @richardbroadwell7990 2 роки тому +1

Simon … continuing to struggle with the Bach 2-6-0 mogul struggle pulling AMS 1:20.3 cars, all of which are heavy with metal wheels. Have determined with considerable testing the mogul with some struggle may pull a maximum of 4 AMS cars (i. e., box car, two Jackson- Sharpe coaches, short caboose); however, I have encountered no struggle, no pulling issue with 6 non-AMS, plastic wheel cars + an AMS short caboose with metal wheels. This is regardless if mogul drive wheels and track are dirty. I would submit with disappointment the pulling power of the Bach 2-6-0 mogul indeed is compromised by the number of heavy AMS metal wheel cars to be pulled by the Bach mogul; it’s motor is not strong enough to accommodate readily much more than 4 AMS cars.
    Cheers,
    Dr. Ric

Logging is quite popular and I can see the appeal: less space needed due to smaller trains and slower running speed, and there's a quirkiness to the industry so you can be more imaginative.

Hey Simon … more info to share re the 2-6-0 mogul. Continuing to be frustrated re the limited pulling strength of the mogul, that is pulling AMS cars per se. Have discovered, as is the case with other and all engines, if the wheels are dirty the engine traction is reduced, thereby reducing the pulling of attached cars. Dirty mogul wheels contribute significantly to reducing the mogul pull; this adds to and is coupled with the inherent weakness of the mogul motor. Result is slip sliding away as Paul’s Simon song says - slip sliding away! So … best to keep cleaning them wheels.

Simon … have you had no difficulty with your Bachmann 2-6-0 pulling AMS coaches? Now have my 2-6-0 pulling AMS stock car, 2 AMS coaches, short caboose. A struggle pulling if a boxcar or a 3rd coach is added. Have determined the drag is related to a number of issues: dirty track, dirty mogul drive wheels, and wheels on attacked coaches and other cars that require a running (used) “break in” period to reduce wheel rotation friction. The latter is a major factor inhibiting the mogul 2-6-0 pulling successfully.

Hiya! Apologies for not responding sooner on this matter, I just have not had the time to investigate in recent weeks.
I have no intention of running this engine with a long train. I have on order just one red D&RG coach from Accucraft (I'm waiting a while as they haven't scheduled production of the livery yet) and will run it with just a couple of freight cars. I have an AMS boxcar and a Bachmann Spectrum flat car which I will both re-mark as D&RG, plus I have an AMS high-side gondola in D&RG on order which should be arriving any time now. (Ordered six months ago!)
I did manage to do a trial for your benefit yesterday, and ran Raton outside with four AMS Jackson Sharps. Seemed fine, maybe not quite as speedy as it would be on it's own. My track is pretty much flat, and it was clean. It had been raining, so the rails were slightly wet too. My other two coaches are packed away in their boxes, but I think four seemed to be it's limit.

At present, my Bachman 2-6/0 is pulling two AMS coaches and three additional cars with far less struggle compared to previous dilemma - perhaps because mogul engine a bit more “broken in” to running along with more lubrication applied to wheels of the five cars. Your Bachmann K27 video demonstrates easy great pull of your 6 AMS coaches - that’s 36 pounds of cars behind our K27 and it “scoots” well! With this scale, with all the details, it's kind of expected that you'll have to put a couple of bits back into place. You just hope that the packaging has taken that into account so the risk parts don't do damage.
The smoke stack does stay on ok it's not going to fall off, but it is far looser than my other engines. I might try to fix it better, but I don't think it will be a problem if I don't.
      Thanks for your comment!
      Simon

      That's Eddie's skinny body, not a woman's 😂
Ummm.... it could be tea, it could be coffee,..... it could be something else. (Depends on the time of day) 😉. If I'm drinking beer, you'll know. I have a full array of beer glasses for all beer styles. 😝
If you visit with trains and your bass, that would be awesome. 🤘😁🤘

Really? Weird. I've never heard that before. Eddie started as just a theatre prop which they named 'Eddie The Head'. (Or 'ead). There was artwork of him having just murdered Margaret Thatcher, but not The Queen. 🤔

I was able to watch and visit the live after death tour... it was amazing to see him come out on stage over 9' tall and dance around everybody.. Iron maiden is one of my most favorite bands ever.. Big inspiration and I wish I was on Bruce Dickinson's plane.. when he was flying it for every tour most people don't know he was the pilot 😎🤘 I could be wrong But the hands that are grabbing the bottom of her waists were hers

You were there on that tour??? Wow!!! I've seen them at least 13 times from 2006, but WOW!
They still have 'walk-on Eddie' and 'Big Eddie', in whatever guise the current theme requires. I did actually go on a Bruce Air trip years ago where he took a plane load of fans from England to a place in Europe to see a show, (mine was in Valencia, Spain) and then fly everyone back the next day. I met him and their manager, Rod Smallwood. 😁

      Hi Vinay.
It is 1:20.3 scale, which is known as F Scale.
It runs on Gauge 1 track, which is 45mm.
Bachmann Spectrum, Accucraft and AMS are manufactures of this scale.
I hope this helps. See my other videos and you will see many more models in this scale.
      Thank you!

I also have a coal burning 2-6-0 named Emma Nevada. She’s also a real 2-6-0 that was once owned by Walt Disney animator Ward Kimball on his backyard full scale narrow gauge railroad named Grizzly Flats Railroad. Ward had Emma and an 0-4-2 Forneny named Chloe. I have great pictures of both of them I’d love to share with you over Facebook or Instagram. There as precious as Gold.

Hi Simon, I have the same and am very pleased with it....looks beautiful. However the problem Bachmann still have is that although its a Spectrum, it still trying to be all things to all men, or more correctly children as a 'toy'. The electronics are an example of this, with a completely overcomplicated wiring system with 16 wires going to and from the loco, with switches behind the fire box door, that duplicate the switches in the tender, utterly ridiculous. There is NO room for a 14.8v battery pack in the tender, because the circuit board is far too large, with 2 plug ins. Bachmann save money and simplify to NMRA standards, and like Simon says, 2 chuffs...WHY!!! Also the coupler height. Every Bachmann I own has had to be modified to NMRA height standard.
Also the centre Drivers are HUGHLY oversize, and not flanged, which they could be as they and the front drivers are so closely linked.
So is it a 'toy' or is it an upmarket Model......same with the smoker. Is it a toy or is it a model. Well we all know the answer to that...
Great loco but not good enough. So I have stripped out all the rubbish. There are 8 leads that need to go to the loco, for the Motor, Fan, Firebox and Front light. Cant run the silly smoker with a Battery anyway. PS: no wiring Diagram unlike their Shay.

      Hiya!
Yeah, I get that. It's really good, but just lacking in some areas. These models are very expensive to produce though, hence why they don't do them at all anymore.
This one is a vast improvement on the first run though. (See my Eureka. As beautiful as it is, what should be a stained wood cab is solid orange plastic!)
Thanks for your comments, Mate. Cheers.

The Spanish word “Ratón” means Rat or large mouse, depending on which Spanish speaking country you are in.

Thanks. Yeah I translated "raton" and it said "mouse". I checked "rat" and the Spanish came back as "rata".

Buy another coach. Just don't be surprised at how much bigger an AMS J&S coach is than your locomotive. They really are the same scale... The Big Hauler's are incorrect for this model.
