WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I think this guy is missing the point-
*WE HAVE OPENED THE BIBLE*
*That is why we are atheists*
I did read the Bible and Koran because I wanted to know what they talking about to challenge them, not because I was interested in a god.
@@teardrop-in-a-fishbowl I read both just as any other tales. Not even to debate. Lil kids believe in Santa claus I read few books about him too
2 corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
I once was full of doubts, didn't want to believe, These are some of the things that have changed in my life since I accepted Christ as my savior.
I realised the very life I have is given to me by God himself. I knew that God was in control of my life. I knew that I can trust him with my future and that he was guiding me. I didn’t have to tread through life alone; I have the Creator of the universe by my side. when I put my faith "in Christ" I have became something I was not before. My identity changed from being the fallen version of myself, to being associated with the righteousness of Christ. my life was no longer worldly; is now spiritual.
My long-time bad habits that I had tried to give up over a long period of time. I had pretty much accepted that "that's just the way I am", and had just about given up on correcting them, ceased to exist. After I asked Jesus Christ to help me out, my life began changing, unexpectedly, dramatically. All my old dreams and ideas and agendas and purposes were gone and have been replaced by Christ's ideas and agendas and purposes. My old nature-natural pride, love of sin, and my former opinions, habits and passions was replaced with new things, full of life and the glory of God. I became humble and I was being sanctified (made holy) day by day, sinning less and hating it more each time I fail.
This is all my evidence, I received peace come to my heart, a miracle after a miracle occurred in my life: The Bible - God's word, I noticed after I received Christ was that I began to have i was unable to explain the desire to read the Bible. I couldn't stop reading. I knew that God was in control of my life. Each day is filled with finding out something new about God through reading the Bible. I stopped smoking, drinking, gambling and no more crazy parties.. And I also noticed that I had been given a deep love for everyone (including people I've never even met). My uncontrolled anger was gone..... I didn't really think at that time that there was so much wrong with lust, but that was now gone too and much more. But the most dramatic difference of all -- one I was not expecting when I prayed continually is my love for God. I have heard the commandment to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind soul and strength" but I'll tell you that I never really followed that before. I kind of believed and hoped in God, but God was not on my first priority list before. Now, He's number One. And it was after that I really now learned to love my neighbors second as myself. I pray to God every day, I read His Word every day, and it's rare that an hour goes by that I don't think of Him. and this is all God's Grace. The only way that you can know for sure, is to have faith in God and let God show you. God needs us to just have a little faith, Just have enough faith to pray to Him for forgiveness of your sins and to trust Jesus for your salvation. Continue praying. Once you do, the Holy Spirit will give you all the "proof" you ever needed!
Mark 5:19
And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
A heart that is grateful is overflowing and cannot be silent. It yearns to share with others, to carry the gratefulness and thankfulness within. Now I’m learning to give reasoned answers to people for the hope that I have in Jesus and as I do so I’m also learning that there are answers to people’s questions, even if I don’t know the answers myself.
God has all the answers and with God nothing is impossible.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
That's what happened to me, and I got the greatest surprise and the greatest gift of my life.

Carlos checks nearly ever box you'd expect to find in a textbook dishonest interlocutor: Arrogant, petulant, resistant to staying on topic, disinterest in answering direct questions or even in making sure he understands what's being said to him in the first place. Late in the call he even admits to being 100% sure he's right, which we should all know for what it really is: an admission that he's 100% close-minded.
It's endlessly depressing that minds like this lack the self awareness to realize how terrible acting like this makes them look.
Watching this again, Carlos didn't call in to argue or debate. He came to preach.
Of course he did... He wanted to do a bible study group on the internet

I love how Carlos accuses them of speaking disrespectfully when he can't listen respectfully.
Absolutely! So many times in the call he wasn’t truly listening to what the hosts were saying, and a couple times even had to ask for them to say it again after they called him out. I think he just wanted his fifteen mins to speak to the audience, not have an actual conversation.
It's an equivocation of the term "respect". Many are taught that "respect" simply means not raising your voice or using "foul language" or even disagreeing with what a person is saying. In actuality, real respect includes giving considerate thought and generous interpretation to your interlocutor (and, I'd argue, calling them out when they fail to reciprocate, as it devalues the conversation)
Carlos says that he's treating them respectfully, but then he turns around and gaslights them because he infers that they don't know where they came from.
I think carlos was listening as dutifully as he can. It's not the fault of his ears that he couldn't answer the questions of the host. It was the fault of what's between those ears.
It's terrible hard work when the mindset is so different. The Hosts know none of the stuff Carlos has is real evidence and Carlos thinks it is.

Profanity is inevitable due to the intense frustration these theists (bastards) callers inevitably provoke. :-)
There IS NO way to have an intellectually honest discussion with a intellectually dishonest person on any topic. It is guaranteed to be very frustrating. It the point of profanity.
Asking a Christian "why" is like cursing at them. They feel offended out the gate when questioned about their beliefs. You're supposed to just nod and agree. That's all they can take without feeling attacked
I think that he meant "don't be rude to me". It was a very blunt question that challenged the assumption that the bible is inherently true and imparts wisdom. To Christians who are taught that you can railroad atheists through basic exercises like "bible is true because bible says so" and win, having a flesh and blood atheist shut down the exercise before it can begin looks like rudeness.

It's even worse than that. As far as I know, the book The War of Worlds has no internal contradictions. The Bible has many contradictions. How can a book that (it is claimed) is the actual word of God (or at least is heavily influenced by, and is meant to teach and inform us about God and his laws) have even one internal contradiction? If God were real, and the Bible was his Holy text, then surely the Bible would be flawless?

All they do is make baseless assertions. Carlos himself admitted that you need to take the gumballs out of the jar and actually count them to verify.
Jesse O. Carlos is an ignorant turd!
I don't think people are ignorant for believing in god. I think is more an indoctrination problem. People are not born with the knowledge of the bible, but they are taught from their childhood that something is true and nothing else. There are people more responsive to that indoctrination and some that are not.
I talk to my mother (she's 63 years old, in Spain) and when she was in school, evolution was not taught as truth. It's been only 50 years! I can't imagine how hard it must be for her to understand quantum theory or the concept of an infinity universe born from a single point. That's why I stopped trying to explain it to the her xD. I understood what she feels like. Now I just try to focus on pseudoscience, climate change or vaccines, that I think are important.
The point is, our generation is lost, for normal people like most of us. We just have to give a chance to the new generations. Teach them critical thinking with the knowledge of physics, mathematics, etc... Teach them to make their own theories and how to test you models instead of indoctrinate them with books with an easy way out. Make them understand that even if you fail in your theory (nowadays fail is a bad word; I can't imagine how many "failures" Newton had), it's not a problem, because that's how you learn and grow to a better understanding.
Okay, so let's give Carlos a verse to "unfold" the bible's higher meaning: "“You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk." (Exo 23:19)
Hmmm that could be tasty.
I was thinking of Proverbs 31:6, "Leet beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are anguishing."
“Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.” - Isaac Asimov

And the fact that Dr. Asimov is one of the greatest minds to ever exist is even more proof of the statement.

Carlos: "Your book of fiction is fiction, my book of fiction is reality!"
Makes dumb claim. Gets answer other than yes. "Look guys I'm not here to argue or say that I'm right." Yes you are, that's exactly what you did.

Exactly. At 23 minutes and 25 seconds. I commented on this above just now. He followed that up with I'm just here to share the truth. So if he thinks what he saying is true, how can he say say that he's not trying to do prove he's right and say that hes right?
That's just one of his many ways of being dishonest.
Theists are very dishonest

No, its not ego. Everyone has ego, its unavoidable. What he has, is _conceit._ He is so convinced that he is correct, he is willing to ignore anything to preserve his position. That is narcissism, and it is conceit. A few times Eric is too patient, but that's just about finding where the line is, and it's different for every caller.
On the other hand, he's one of the best for getting theists to the point where you can actually hear them thinking about these topics for the first time, and they start to give genuine, honest, considerate answers which contradict their religion.
They actually leave the conversation more thoughtful about their beliefs!
The end of the call reveals everything you need to know about Carlos and people that think like him. Asking them "Can you be wrong?"
