What these are based on, according to museums from my little European country (that isn't afraid of risque advertisements), is 1940s pinup advertisements! They were extra popular during wartime, for soldiers in the field who'd be able to get both candy and a picture of a pretty lady, which was excellent for morale🤷♀️ If you look up these classic pinup ads from the 40s, you might be able to find one for Nichols Kola for example, and it's the exact same type of modelling work. Nuke girl takes the 1940s pinup style and applies just a tiny bit of 2010s beauty standards, as far as I can tell :)
I would say "of course Nuka-Girl became the icon for Nuka-Cola. I mean, look at her", but I guess that'd be like expecting Jessica Rabbit become the Disney icon instead of Mickey the Rat.
Love this video pointing these details out. I've noticed that the community seems to be very locked into interpreting everything as a 1950 thing (and yes Bethesda has a habit of focusing on WW2 and 1950 too) but I think Fallout is only at it's base 1950, then everything that comes after is a reinterpretation. Weapons still develop, culture still develops, but the red scare never stops, but women's rights obviously still happens, civil rights must happen as well, conflicts, terrorism, drug wars, etc. all still happens, but reinterpreted (then sci-fi'd, and nuked). But additionally sexuality and sexualization obviosly happen as well, I think we can definetly say Fallout is more than just 1950 + nukes. Anyways, great video thanks for it
The nuka girl & general scifi design of the Fallout game series was lifted from the old scifi 1940s magazines Amazing Stories. I'm actually surprised that not many people know about this.
On sexually exploited female characters and actresses, they are not just being exploited. They are the beneficiaries of it, as well. Being an attractive woman is quite profitable, if you know how to use what nature gave you. More often profitable than being an attractive man is.
You made a full on deep dive into classic sci fi for this. As a movie buff, and a Fallout fan I was impressed. Yeah honestly soon as I saw Nuka Girl first time, I saw the Barbarella similarities. Barbarella was, is cult classic sci fi. Fonda's most well known film. I know she did a lot more, and more serious and acted very well in other later films in 70's and 80's ,but yeah. Barbarella is the movie she is most well known for. Was pretty big in the 60's, ( yeah the sexual content drew a lot of guys in etc) ,but many more genuine sci fi fans were attracted by its more off the wall kooky, quirky , not your average sci fi plot and ideas. Definitely the Fallout devs drew directly from Fonda. From the white uniform,to her hair colour, her slender frame and attractiveness even to her overall personable vibe and particular sweet smile and eyes. Absolutely 60's Jane Fonda 👍
There was a series of stories dealing with a beautiful blonde girl named Telzey Amberdon and some of the covers of the books and magazines could pass for Nuka Girl. There is a red head called Trigger Argee in the same universe so to speak, and she was also a beautiful woman. It was the covers of Telzy's and Trigger's books and stories that would also be inspiring tor Nuka Girl. 1962 was when the first Telzey story published in a magazine. Telezey and Trigger were popular characters. Telzey is telepathic and Trigger is an expert shot with a gun. James H. Schmitz was the writer for the series
Reminds me of Major Marjorie... I saw a comic of her once when I was picking in book mod at Amazon. 😅 Edit: I want to add that M. Marjorie has a blue skin tight suit. Her helmet makes her look like a sea creature a little bit.
I have a movie marathon today ... and I just did see the movie with the Nuka Girls Origin ... or atleast her suit ... it was an old Space Movie, and from the face look I would say Tank Girl or Barbarella I shall return here after I've seen it in the playlist. Edit: The movies name I ment was called "The Sky is calling" 1959 Or atleast it's it's name in german, at minute 24:34 you can see the woman in the Spacesuit I ment looks verry simulair to Nuka Girl
nuka girl reminds me zthe most of those girls painted on plaes or depicted riding on a bomb during the cold war era ...
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand now I'll be hearing Duran Duran's "Electric Barbarella" in my head all night. THANKS NUKA-GIRL
Sometimes, a mascot is just a mascot. But seriously, I was waiting for you to mention Barbarella.
I would not have thought 50s to 89s scifi; I would have thought WWII aircraft art like the Memphis Belle and pin-ups.
Sexy female characters that also kick ass are the best of both worlds. We need more characters like these.
It's a well known fact that Gene Roddenberry positioned his office just outside the actresses' dressing room so he could see them coming and going.
Why not.
That's horrible.

So I think another big influence is the bomber art of ww2
its definitely visible in the poses tbh
@@AmyCherryLMAO oh definitely and I think someone said it was. I think triangle city discussed it

After watching this I hope we get space swords/lightsabers in fallout
Heck yeah
Coming back to this because if you think about the zeta aliens and their tech it may happen at some point
Well, you have the proton axes from Old World Blues. That's close enough, I suppose
Barberella is my NukaGirl

Bravo ! Excellent.
That episode challenge me 😅!
I made a list of all those movies you talked about and now, l plan to watch all of them.
Nuka girl is mostly pulled from buck Roger type comics.
One could argue that Bethesda stole the Nuka Girl concept from the New Vegas's Rita's Cafe billboard

Great video. Those classic film women are gorgeous. Love the Nuka girl posters.
I don't even want to imagine what Nuka Girl would look like in 2024.
Farrah Fawcett was such an amazing person

I'm honestly surprised Barbarella wasn't one of the first, if not the first, potential influences you mentioned.
Can't believe you didn't mention St Exmin (Sybil Danning) from Battle Beyond the Stars.
Most of the video was a bit sus.

One can easily google and read from the developer’s mouth that the inspiration was simply from WW2 pin-up girls.
