- The situation is dire in the Kingdom of Rohan. The wizard Saruman, their friend and ally, have betrayed them and has gathered an army of evil creatures in the fortress of Isengard. Gandalf the White and powerful allies come to the aid of Rohan, but will the Rohirrim prevail? This video attempts to represent Tolkien’s version of the battle. It includes the Battle of Helms Deep (Battle of the Hornburg) and the Battles of the Fords of Isen.

This project took roughly 300 hours, a third of my entire vacation was dedicated to this video. I hope you find it entertaining and as always; I am very open for feedback, both positive and negative. I strive to achieve perfection, but that is not possible, and many will of course dislike my accent. However, I am very happy with the end result, and believe it’s the best effort I could have given.
The battles portrayed are known as: The First Battle of the Fords of Isen, The Second Battle of the Fords of Isen and of course the Battle of Hornburg. We see the important roles Erkenbrand, Grimbold, Elfhelm, Théodred and Eomer plays. The Galadhrim Elves are not present at all; that of course belongs only in the movies.

In the book, the battle wasn't nearly as hopeless as it was in the movie. And they had basically won by the time reinforcements arrived; the reinforcements just sealed the deal.
True!
that would not be so cinematic and threat of dark powers would seem boring to most wievers, i agree with you, but I also agree with the movie version being the way it is
werent inside the walls the mounted rohirim that charged when the wall blew up??? i remember that they were 1000 horses on the inside waiting...
@@thanasisgeronimos9124 They were not 1000 horses on the inside, we do not know their specific numbers.

Just wait for all the comments questioning the missing Elves... xD
But muh elves! (Isn't there a battle of Loth Lorien that's actually occupying the elves?
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT The Elves needed to be there in the film though, because otherwise the Elves did fuckall, except for one line in an extended scene which does nothing by itself. "This is what YOU men, hobbits and Dwarf must acomplish. We Elves could help but we no longer give a shit. Bye." Besides, its so obvious that the Elves were Tolkiens' favourite race and for everyone who never reads the books to despise/hate the Elves due to their lack of involvement is almost a stab at Tolkien himself. The prologue is what causes the issues, the Dwarves are spoken of as underground Hermits with an obsession with shiny stuff, but the Elves are shown as a race who will stand with 'humans' against evil. Yet they do nothing to actual assist the fellowship other than a few times which are shown in the films.
@@marcusromulus5646 The whole point of the book is that Men have to face their own battles as the other races dwindle and fade away. Having the Elves at Helm's Deep robs the narrative of this incredibly important theme, which is that Men have to start fighting their own wars!
@@brooksboy78 I have read and watched the trilogy many times and while i have seen/felt many themes throughout the trilogy. Man fighting their own fights has never been one of them.

This gives me new respect for Rohan, I love the movies, but this sounds more heroic, Rohan fighting alone without elfs as the best archers/warriors.
Indeed! Quite another situation! Heroes they were!
Yeah they weren't actually elves.
Well rangers of the West were looking to help, but these champions got lost XD
One of the strengths of LoTR is that not all the heroic action is dumped on one person. Heroism, both small and great, is all over the place.
The lines where Gimli and Legolas wish for their kin come from this battle.
I remember from the book that Gimli and Eomer got isolated when the deeping wall fell and ended up fighting orcs in the caves (where the civilians were?) where Gimli got most his kills but it's been a while, was confused to not see that part here. Anyways great video, love the tactical overview :D
That part is not given much attention, but I said that Eomer was driven back to the narrows, so I do mention it
There are actually deleted scenes from the movie of her fighting but they never made it
Thank you...I always found the portrayal of Rohan in the movies to be slightly off point...As it comes to military it gave the impression that they were merely just a few peasants when in fact they were still fierce fighters, they had men, they fought back against Isengard aggressively and nearly won The Battle of Helm's Deep all on their own which while considerably unfavorable to them at the onset was not nearly as desperate as what it was made in the movies, which I'm not complaining at all, yet the endless oceans of orcs shown in Two Towers is not truly representative of the even struggle which lasted for some time...
Agreed!
14:34 here's proof that the twitching orc Legolas shoot didn't count, since it got Gimli's axe embedded in his nervous system
xD
Anyone else think that, in the movie, when Gandalf brought reinforcements when Helm’s Deep seemed to be fallen, like the Siege of Vienna...

Elves in Helms Deep
Lol!
Never understood why they added the Elves in. This battle was meant to show how truly alone and cornered Rohan was.
@@Galohide The book is all about how Men have to start fighting their own battles and take their own place in the world so having Elves in Helms Deep kills that theme too.
@@Galohide Peter made men incompetent for some reason so elves needed to come babysit them
If I remember correctly, their reasoning for adding elves was that they felt that the atmosphere leading up to the battle was too grim and hopeless. It was a stupid decision, they add nothing to the Helm's Deep sequence, and are a major reason why I, as a book fan, can't enjoy the Two Towers as much as I can Fellowship of the Ring.
This was good, but there were some details that you could have mentioned. In the book, many of the wild men surrender. Now, you give the impression that they were all slaughtered (as happens for the uruk-hai in the movie)
True that! However, it took me 300 hours to create, and at a certain point, you simply lose some details
I was listening to the two towers and got to Helms deep and I couldn’t help but think about how I wanted to visualize what was happening in the battle better outside of what I know from the movie and this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
I like it would be amazing if you create all the battles of middle-earth and make it a series, and I know it take too much effort and time but it would be amazing. Thumbs up ma man hope u don’t stop this. +rep from me
I will keep making battles :) ! Thanks for your kind words
Eomer only aided the Fellowship /after/ Aragorn proved his identity by drawing the Sword that was Broken and has been Reforged, Anduril. Wormtongue ignored that, to his eventual fate.
Very happy to have just found this channel, as even though I grew up with Tolkien ( my Father read "the Hobbit" to me, when I was about 7 ) I've never had a in-depth knowledge of the world. It is so vast, that I am not sure I have enough time left to learn a great deal.
Will commence with spelunking your playlists, am especially interested in learning more about the Humans who sided with Sauron.... don't think any fought for Saruman, as that was, if memory still serves me, just Goblinoid w/Trolls and Wargs. In all truth, I would Mercenary for Sauron, as those Elves are too damned smug for my liking. Gandalf can be as well. Keep on keepin' on, from the Barrows of Michigan!
Thank you Nameless Entity! There's always time to learn what you love :) There were in fact some men that fought for Saruman, the Dunlendings, which hated the Rohirrim. Its likely that he also blended the races of these Dunlendings with Orcs, to create Half-Orcs (Goblin-like men) and Uruk-hai, a stronger breed of orcs. Welcome, and may you find joy in my projects!
Great work! Thank you for mentioning that there where dunlanding and orcs, Not Uruk-hai that stormed the keep ❤️
After reading the two towers a few months back then watching the extended version of the two towers again, it bothers me how the forces of Rohan look so weak and helpless, which is very similar to how the siege of Minas Tirith plays out in The Return of the King. They basically get routed and totally defeated until Gandalf shows up, which isn't really what happens in the book at all as the video shows. Part of me wishes the Amazon TV series just did the events of LOTR books like HBO did with GOT where each book got a whole season. That way stuff in the books that's left out of the movies for time constraints can be shown.
Hollywood is of course very different from books. Especially in the case with Lord of the Rings which is very immersive, the adaption will always be lackluster! Jackson's adaptations were incredible tho.
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT Yeah I agree, I wasn't intending to argue the movies didn't do a good job; obviously the movies are legendary as far as the film industry is concerned, but it would be nice to see the books perspective in a big budget production.
@ I agree with you on all points! Spot on.
@@BasePuma4007 I have a feeling that Amazon will be much truer to Tolkien than Jackson was. They are basically producing the series specifically for Tolkien fans. Why would they deviate? They are not bounded by time constraints. They would have to be pretty stupid to screw it up.
Because in a film if the bad guys are easily taken down you lose tension. You can't really believe the Rohan/Gondor could lose their respective sieges if every scene shows them wrecking orc shit. And if you don't believe there's a chance they'll lose there's no tension, the battle becomes a formality.
I have watched these middle earth battles many times. I love how you made them, pelennor fields, black gate helms deep, battle of the five armies are my favourites
Happy to hear that! More coming in the future!
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT im really happy to hear that :D
Important to point out the sequence of events that lead to the retreat and defeat of Isengard's forces:
1) Aragorn talks to the armies, warning them of the dawn and what a nrw day might bring. This causes some of the Dunlendings to be nervous.
2) Dawn breaks
3) Some murmur spreads in the enemy's army, probably about the huorns' sudden appearance. One can imagine the fear of being surrounded being ever present in the minds of an assaulting army.
4) The horn of the hornburg is blown, and the sound causes many of the orcs to throw themselves to the ground as it echoes around in the canyon seeming to come from everywhere at once.
5) A great shout arises from the besieged forces and the king sallies forth with his cavalry. Note that they are riding out unopposed as the orca have just thrown themselves down in fear.
6) At the same time, Eomer and Gimli sallies forth from the caves, causing all of the enemy to be driven back on all fronts.
The enemy loses simply because they are broken morally. The fear of being surrounded causes all cohesion to break down and they flee. Then Gandalf and Erkenbrand shows up just to hammer the point home. Note that at no point is cavalry charging into armored orcs standing in formation, as happens twice in the movie and is not how cavalry works.
I really, really enjoyed this video. I myself have never read the books, just watched the movies. You have now rekindled my desire to read them, well done good sir!

Great stuff. The only thing I'd have liked is a better setting of the geography of helms deep. The map was great. I also thought gimili was pushed back to the glittering caves.
I see that I missed to highlight that. There's always something that one misses! Gimli was indeed pushed back there (he was with Eomer and Gamling). Thanks for your support Dom!
I hadn't seen a complete description of the Battles of the Fords of Isen before this, so thank you. Also, Haldir's head was amusing.

Love your content man! Honestly was the vids I use to listen to like an audiobook while doing things. Your vids gave me so much knowledge into the world of Lord of the Rings
I'm sorry to see you haven't released a video in a couple months. Love your stuff, seriously great stuff
Your video got me thinking: was Gandalf's bringing of reinforcements even necessary to rout the enemy? xD
It seems not! However, I think the Orcs would have charged Théoden if the terrifying white rider were there!
No... but that’s the point. It’s purpose was to inspire. To reunite forces while he gave a sort of mystical or spiritual representation of succeeding
@@factbeaglesarebest True that! The Istari were not heroes, they were counsellors. Gandalf had already played his part when he made Theoden ride out to war in front of his army. Well spoken!
Perhaps not factually, but on a strategic level absolutely. It is safe to recognize that the orcs would besiege the castle (and probably take it by storm as a relief force from Rohan could easily besiege any army trapped in the valley). It is a safe bet that Theoden would hole up in the castle instead of taking to the field. Thus Gandalf's relief force would almost certainly encounter a siege or a battle. Both would give a considerable strategic advantage to the defenders and put them in a position to win the siege/battle. Theoden's mad dash was a brilliant move on his part as the morning sun, the sudden sounding of the horn and the fearsome presence of cavalry out on the field would no doubt shake the morale of the besiegers. No doubt reports of Erkenbrand's army must have come down to the orcs, whose commander would've created chaos on the battlfield by trying to pull some frenzied orcs back from the battle to muster a rearguard against the oncoming force. All that chaos was just the icing on the cake.
@@baerververgaert1308 Very good analysis, I agree!
I truly prefer the book version.
Great video, love the book version better. Theoden is so much better here. In the movie he constantly get lectured by aragorn who is the hero and therfore allways right.
One (little) detail i missed, gimli and eomer were driven back with some men int the case but when erkenband arrived they sallyed out.
Thank you! I agree with you! As for the detail, I briefly mentioned that Eomer was driven back to the Narrows, but I suppose I could have mentioned it more clearly! :)
Your animation style is excellent. It is extremely informative but also leaves a great deal to the watcher's imagination. Please continue this series and include older tales of Middle Earth, Numenor and the Undying Lands.
Very nice video man! I just read the chapter and needed some visuals, this helps a lot! I honestly prefer the movie adaptation tho, i think the book version was kinda anticlimactic
I wish more people understood this. The Uruks suddenly terrified and just dropping their swords and running away would be so lame.

The Gimli vs Legolas kill count was a great bonus :)
Thanks for a lovely comment!!
I love your cinematic delving into the Middle-Earth lore!
Thank you!
Interesting but the part about "orcs placing the fire orthanc" is conjecture. The "fire of orthanc" is mentioned once by Aragorn in surprise after a hole was blasted in the wall. It is unclear if it's a weapon or an object or a spell. It is likely that the "fire of orthanc" was Saruman's wizardry coming from the tower of Orthanc as displayed in the 1978 animated movie and it is also the simplest explanation.
Damn really awesome video, gives some insight in the battles. I'm reading the book atm and this is helping me visualize! Also, cool easter egg ;)

Lore of Middle-Earth true, still a great great video
Actually Gimli was driven into the caves with Eomer. Legolas was with Aragorn in the keep
@@varun634 Indeed! Eomer, Gamling and Gimli made a deadly trio!
You know, in the movie Saruman serves Sauron with his army but the more accurate depiction is he is a potential rival in his bid to seize the ring for himself.
The idea of adding elves to the battle was imo to show that 1. elves are in decline (only managed to muster 150 or so men) 2. the very dramatic scene of dying Haldir to show that elves immortality is in fact sort of a curse. Elves don't truly understand what it means to die so the slow motion Haldir dying, looking at his fallen brothers, is completely "baffled" by the cold running through his body and his eyes blurring. A great scene imho. 3. we saw what Legolas can do with his bow. And that's only 1 elf. DON'T TELL ME YOU DIDN'T WANT TO SEE A WHOLE ARMY OF LEGOLASSSEEEESSS IN A BATTLE?!!
Theese battles done in the fashion of the great battles of antiquity are amazing(they are basically as interesting too). Their existence is a reason to subscribe on itself for sure. Expecting first age soon i guess
First Age will come in the future, that age needs the perfection of my skills
the quality of your videos keeps getting better and better! you portray the battles in an engaging and clear way - keep it up!!!
Glad you like them! Lovely to hear that!
Not being a book reader, one problem I have with how this is in the movie is that the battles of Minas Tirith and the Hornburg go down basically the same; valiant defence of fortress, everything is hopeless, mounted reinforcements arrive and save the day. I wish the course of both battles was a little more distinct.
I’ve only just found this channel.
Excellent quality.

As soon as I saw this was uploaded I braced myself the way Theoden, Aragorn, Legolas and the rest braced themselves for their go-for-broke gambit in the movie before I clicked on it. "Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath! Now for ruin, and the red dawn! Forth Erolingas!"
Always a joy to see you in the comments! Thank you for your support to the channel!
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT Don't mention it. Your channel is like ScrivaTV meets Historia Civilis.
Very good video. I like also how you generally included also the Isen battles and everything that lead up to the Helms Deep defence.
The book version generally looks more realistic and from that immersive. It always stuck me odd that Theoden could not muster more troops for his defences and how basically there were no troops west from the Edoras for that matter.
But each version has its merits, I still think that the movie version did its part good for the "wow" effect, by adding Elves into the mix, and the final arrival of Gandalf and Eomer was also quite cinematically well done.
Thank you! I agree with you, both battles have their own strengths
Calenardhon is a large area. Rohan west of Edoras likely would have taken too long to reach Helm's Deep. Theoden had a hard enough time mustering troops from there to head to Minas Tirith.
I just finished reading this chapter in the The Two Towers. It was such a great read.

Thank you for this gripping narration of the campaign in the Mark
Thank god you make another one i hope you continue to cover battles of middle earth

The video should be calde rohan vs isengard
While i like the movies, i do find the version of the war between the Rohirim and Isenguard more interesting. Wars are rarely won on a single battle, and the books show Rohan and Isenguard fighting several battles, culminating in Helms Deep.
I also like the way both sides gain and lose momentum and the book shows how difficult it is for attackers to storm a well made and defended fortress. Isenguard basically threw away too many men and orcs storming the walls, meaning the walls did their job.
The reinforcements ended up being a convenience as they allowed the Rohirim and Ent forces to surround and break the Isenguard armies fully. Without those reinforcements, Isenfuaed's armies could have retreated intact and dragged out the war just long enough to prevent Rohan from reinforcing at the Pelinor Fields.
The movie tries too hard to play the 300 Spartans and their 1000 allies vs 10000 Persians trope a bit too hard with 300 Rohirim and 1000 elves vs 10000 orcs playing the roles. I like the idea of the elves arriving to honor the ancient alliance they once had the last age, was a very nice touch in the movie i'd have liked to have seen in the books too.
I just randomly decided to look for this battle breakdown. I’m not even a big Tolkien guy. Started watching then realized you only uploaded 7 hours ago! Obviously, you be a witch good sir!
Thank you!!
Just finished reading this and for some reason I like movie version better, I like both of them dont get me wrong however I liked that elves were included in the movies coz otherwise for a person who has only seen the movies it would seem that they little to nothing thru out the war, also the fact that deffenders of Helms deep won the battle almost solely by themselves I find that in the movie the situation was far more worse for them, just made Saruman and his army seem a much bigger threat than they were
They are both beautiful in their own ways :)

It really highlights the bravery and martial skill of the Rhorrim and the leadership of Théoden as portayed in the books.
Unlike what we see in the films (the less said about that the better).
One other thing the films didn't do right was giving very little attention to the death of Théodred.
His death was only really mentioned in passing which meant it had little emotional impact.
Also, the extra detail of Legolas and Gilmi's kill count was just an added bonus :)
Thanks as always Paradox! Théodred was actually given very little attention by Tolkien himself! Little grief it seems to Théoden (imo). The heroes is very poorly portrayed in the movies indeed!
I love the Scandinavian. Up and down in tone, it’s like music
Love to hear that! Thanks!
Another amazing content! Thank you, you made my life in quarantine bearable.
Great to hear that :)
Thank you for another great video. That norwegian accent is so nice. ^^ And i think the easter egg was the count of Gimli and Legolas. Also i enjoy you are taking fotage from the mod Total War Rise of Mordor. Havent played it, only played the older version of Third Age Reforged. But it adds some immersion, love it! I see you have gained a few subs, you deserve it. I think iv followed you since 2-5k. Keep it up. =D
Fantastisk at du har fulgt meg så lenge! Easter egget er noe annet tho! Reforged er veldig gøy, spilte det en lang periode!
Where did you get most of the lore from that depicted in detail the events BEFORE Helms Deep... specifically the fords of Isen... Thanks!
The Unfinished Tales :)
Great video as always, you never disappoint. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Mark! After all the hard work, I am very happy to receive such comments!
I was just thinking about this yesterday! Excellent video, as always:)
Awesome! Thank you!
I love your work man and I also love how you reply in detail to all the comments. You have so much passion. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! It's the viewers that give the video success, and every comment deserves attention! One should show respect when people show you respect!
Nice touch with the body counter.
That Haldir head scene had me laughing so hard xD Finally they found a use for the ,,fat elf". Such a legend :')
Easter egg found! Well done!
I'm assuming the Easter egg was the kill count for Gimli and Legolas 😂. With Gimli winning by 1
very nice easter egg ;-) thanks for another cool visualisation of the from the books!
Thank you! So you found Haldir :P?
Wow as always amazing so happy it feels like watching a part of lotr that you haven't watched
That's exactly what I hope to give the vibe about! Thank you for the love!
I just love the Gimli and Legolas score LMAO!!!
I see, this cleared some questions. I was wondering how did a forest was near helms deep, cause in the map fanghorn was near isengard and away from the helms deep.
