- I never thought we'd get to hear Tim this way. Sometimes records just aren't recorded well and you're stuck with the sound. Even if it's drenched in bad effects and mixed all wrong. But what a revelation this is. Tim finally sounds as good as the songs are. Guitar parts are heard for the first time. Background vocals are mixed in. Lyrics are clearly heard. Vocals are turned up. Wowzee. I couldn't wait to chat about this one.
Holy shit! Amazing!!!!
I love your videos. Keep em coming.
Thanks Nate
This is a really balanced, nuanced take on the Mats, their catalog and this record. The parts of the ‘new edition’ that really stand out to me (with the exception of a few of Bob’s previously unheard leads on the anthems) are One Good Dose of Thunder and Lay It Down Clown. I had heard a decent live cover or 2 of One Good Dose before, but both of those songs sound so much more thought out with this new mix. Thanks for a genuinely great review!
I remember in high school living in MN when I checked out The Replacements Let it Bleed from the library, it was scratched to heck but it still blew my mind. Thank you for your review of the album and context around it. I'm digging Tommy Stinson's Cowboys in the Campfire album that came out this year "Wronger", It's got some Tim vibes. The opening song "Here we go again" definitely.
Cool story about hearing Let It Be. I listened to it earlier today and loved it. First time in a while. I’m going to go to Tommy’s show here next month. Really enjoying that record too. Pleasant surprise.
Great review. Love your unbridled enthusiasm. I agree that Westerberg is a very special songwriter capable of tremendous imagery and emotional depth. I so agree with your evaluation of Let it Be (best sound), Tim (best songs) and Please to Meet Me (best of both). My copy of the Let It Bleed edition arrives on Tuesday and I have the Trouble Boys book ready to crack open. Time for a Replacements deep dive!
Thanks! Maybe listen to the box set before getting too deep into Trouble Boys. Didn’t always paint them in the brightest light. But a great read.
"Lay It Down Clown" has always been considered a song Westerberg wrote as something (along with "Dose of Thunder") to keep Bob Stinson happy. But if you read the booklet that comes with the new Tim set, you learn that Bob only actually plays on 5 of the album's 11 tracks (all overdubbed in a single day after the rest of the tracks had already been recorded by the other three). "Clown" ISN'T one of the tracks Bob plays on -- so all the guitars there are played by Paul!!!
Paul is so underrated as a guitarist.
Nice overview. I agree that the remix sounds more complete than it did before this version. It's almost now like a great classic rock record. That term might be good for some and lame for others, but either way it is so good!!!
Thanks Mazzy. Yeah, sounds timeless now.
Love this record too. Same reaction hearing it. Good on ya.
Still can’t get enough of it.
Very seldom are effects “printed” to the 2 inch masters. That occurs on some Bowie records and is regarded as a British style or technique but, traditionally effects are added when creating a stereo master for production purposes. Master tapes are the multitrack tapes containing 24,36 or whatever number of direct to tape in studio recordings. The original document of performances. Those tapes are used to mix down to stereo during which effects (reverb, delay, chorus, flanging perhaps compression) are applied to the tracks. So, you go from multiple tracks to two stereo tracks (left and right) where levels and effects are fixed in place. That goes on to mastering then yet another master is created for production of physical media (glass master for CDs etc.). So, it’s not so shocking to find masters intact without effects. This depends on what you are referring to as “masters”.
For me, the original Tim is an expansive sounding ROCK album. The Let it Bleed Tim is a ROCK record that has swagger to spare.
Swagger is a key element of the band.
This album sounds incredible!
Just discovered your channel. Great stuff. Question about Sorry Ma Box set. How does the new vinyl version compare to the original Twin Tone pressing?
Thanks! The vinyl of the Sorry Ma box is made up of alternative takes of tracks, not the original record. It sounds pretty good, but I would have preferred either the original record or an alternative track-listing that included “If Only You Were Lonely.”
Ok maybe it got there round the way but in my opinion you don’t get another shot. A record is a snapshot in time. Not interested in how Steven Wilson sees genesis and jethro Tull and gentle giant lps. His mix…who buys this stuff, the OT dans?
PT fans..
As long as the original isn’t completely replaced I’m fine with it. Especially when it’s done this well. Kind of like a “director’s cut” of a movie.
Great review. I think it has to be "All Shook Down" next. There's only that and Hootenanny left, right? Hard to do a box set for an EP (Stink) -- an EP which I love! Kids Don't Follow and Go are among my favorite Mats songs. I like the whole thing actually even if the motivations behind the sound were not 100% artistic. I got a ton of comments on my LIB video and it was about 75% love it and 25% hate it. To each his own, obviously, but I don't get the 25% who hate it. Among those who love the new mix, a lot of people cited "Here Comes A Regular" as the one song where they prefer the original. I don't know. I would be mad if they made the "original" Tim disappear and only offered the new remix. I may not ever go back to the OG, but it should still be there for people to hear.
I wouldn’t want the old Tim to go away either. Just thinking somebody new to them might have all they need for that project with the box. They haven’t done Let It Be yet. But I don’t think there’s much they can do with it other than outtakes. Stink is the only one I don’t have on vinyl. My least favorite, but now I really want to hear it again. Kids is such a great song.
@@lostmixtapes Oh yeah, they haven't done Let It Be. Duh. You're right, the only thing with that would be outtakes and alternate versions. Still, I'd buy it.
The new mix is miles better and _most_ of the additions (or rather restorations) are good. There are some I'm not convinced by.
I prefer the OG version of "Here Comes a Regular"; I think the restored piano parts in the new mix result in subtraction by addition. They make the song sweeter, a little less stark.
The reverb on the old mix was way excessive but I kinda miss it on "Kiss Me On the Bus" - it gave it a surf rock kinda vibe. Stripping it away makes the solo especially sound way more aggressive and I'm not sure I like that on one of the album's poppier cuts.
The extra minute added to "Little Mascara" is directionless. Bob played some weird, wild and exciting solos, but this ain't one of them. It just doesn't add up to anything.
The snippet of studio chat at the beginning of "Waitress in the Sky" feels thrown-in and doesn't add anything.
Okay, the last one is nitpicky, just thought I'd mention it while I'm on a roll...
@@rdrrr Totally agree with you on Regular. I think that’s about the only one I’d substitute from the original. New mix loses some of the devastating emotional impact saving the piano for the end provides. Studio chat rarely adds anything.
