Lost Mixtapes

I'm a music junkie. Always have been. I bought a few vinyl records by the time I was 12, but it was cassettes and later CDs that became my dominant forms of music. Then downloads, then streaming. But now I'm back to where it all started, vinyl records.
So I'm proud to be part of the ever-expanding vinyl community on UA-cam.
I love to talk about music. I also love to talk about creativity. My career started in the music industry. I worked for Caroline Records in the 90's and then moved into a music licensing role at ASCAP. Later I moved into the creative side of advertising and work as a freelance copywriter and creative director.
I'm also a songwriter. Just haven't found a way to get paid for that yet.
For years I thought all of my random knowledge about music was pretty useless, but I'm putting it to work here. I enjoy telling stories about the music, it's creation, and it's impact on me. It's ever evolving, and I'm glad you're here.
Enjoy.

Neil Young Archives III
Neil Young just released his third installment of his CD version of the Archives. This period covers 1976 to 1987 and is pretty fascinating to listen to. Yes, he puts tons of already released content on here. But there is so much new stuff to discover from legendary live performances to unlocking the mystery of unreleased albums, and especially in the Geffen period, what his artistic intents were outside of what we actually heard.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- Wild God
Переглядів 60521 день тому
The new Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album is finally out, after a nearly 6 month wait since it was announced. It's not quite the return to form that was promised and isn't as big of a departure from the last two Bad Seeds records. But it is a positive record. And indeed, a record of joy. #vc #vinylcommunity #nickcave #nickcaveandthebadseeds #warrenellis #vinylcollection #vinylrecords #biblical #r...
Come on Let's Rock and Roll with The Ramones

I've been on a huge Ramones kick. I first got turned on to them in the late 80's and was fortunate enough to see them live once. Looking back I see them as much more than just a killer band that started punk-as if that's no small feat. Now I see them as great pop songwriters. Please share your thoughts about this amazing American rock and roll band. #ramones #vinylcommunity #vinylcollection #pu...
Done with Aerosmith?

Is Aerosmith over? Does it matter? When is enough enough with bands? I like a lot of Aerosmith's music, especially tthe two back to back albums in the mid-70's, Toys in the Attic and Rocks. And I have some good memories of listening to their albums and seeing them live. But do we need more Aerosmith in 2024? #vc #aerosmith #vinylcommunity #vinylrecords #classicrock #vinyladdiction
Top Ten Nerdiest Nerds In Music

This is where I pick three random records. Or maybe 3 not so random records. But I do pick three records. Then I talk about these records. Today I have one from the 70's, one from the 80s, and one from the 90's. Danny Whitten + Crazy Horse

I'm loving this new Archives release from Neil Young. It features studio recordings of the original lineup of Crazy Horse, most of which have never been heard and could have been the basis for a full blown Crazy Horse follow up to Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. This album celebrates Danny Whitten. He's up in the mix, proving what a vital part of Crazy Horse he was and echoing how sad his lost...

The world lost a good one this week. Laurie Lindeen was a force. So positive, so inspiriting, so fearless in cutting her own path. There was always a smile on her face. Her laughter was infectious. The internet has been buzzing with news about R.E.M. this week. Best and Worse Album By A Favorite Artist
Great ranking. Green is my favourite as it was my entry point and I saw the Green tour which blew me away. Yeah the next 3 albums were good but I think they were at their best at Green. Perfect cross over from indie to blowing up big time
The Transformer Man video is something else!
Good on you for your intense immersion in Vol. 3. I’m going through it much more slowly. I agree that as a huge fan, the repetition of tracks/albums is a bit frustrating. I guess it’s like what he did with Decade on a larger scale; a mixture of familiar and new/obscure. Cheers.
Frogs is a great song, love it and love this album too.
Excellent overview! Really appreciate the effort(s) here.
I’ve got the two previous archives set on CD so was a bit gutted to see this third set was massively expanded to 17 discs and a corresponding massive price increase ! Gonna have to wait for a price drop 😭
Time Fades Away is my favourite followed by Zuma, Goldrush, Tonight's The Night, Harvest, Everybody Knows.
@@shaynewest8757 A one of a kind record. Love that one.
nick's about to turn 67. i'm glad he looks like or could be a cult leader. i've been catching up with him over the last few months and hope to play the new one tonight. thanks for the review. i hope you get tickets to see him.

@@lostmixtapes i was driving down the road playing "carnage" yesterday and was desperate to know if nick played "white elephant" when you saw him in more recent shows. stevie wonder's playing minneapolis but you're not there anymore (in case you forgot)!
Just came across your post here, due to my interest in the this latest NYArchive. Great overview and summary. Longtime NY fan, though mostly focused on 60s/70s. But now I’m thinking NYA Vol.3 could lead me toward reexamining the 80s and beyond. Nice to encounter a knowledgeable Neil fan !
@@syater Thanks! There’s so much Comes A Time and Rust Never Sleeps material here too. An interesting journey, as it always is with Neil.
Thanks for the breakdown. Since it sounds like I already own at least 50% of this material I'll probably wait a couple of years until the price drops to something reasonable. I'm not a fan of streaming so I usually rip the CDs to wav files and store them on my pc just in case the internet goes down.
Have always loved Danny Crazy Horse more than anything they ever released. The guitar pans on Down by the River on this album are incredible.. the solos, that’s Danny. I just listened to the full album and every take is incredible, I’m hardcore into Neil and his journey…. Danny is a highlight in the band for me. I don’t want to talk about it is masterful.. In Neil’s book he admits that Danny is better than him.. he also reflects on a UA-cam video by Danny and the Memories. It’s Danny Whitten, clean cut, no guitar, dancing and singing like a champ! By the way…. That Rockets album is pretty fucking good too. So worth the listen.
Welfare Mothers is one of all-time favourite Neil Young songs. So there you go!
How can the record company estimate how big the interest is?
@@hasseelmerson Probably based off the sales of the previous two volumes?
This was fun man, been spinning a bit of Aerosmith lately including Rocks & Pump, still love them & the reaction as usual from my listeners on Social media was huge… The Tour, first was way too expensive but was supposed to end in montreal, might have went as am here… Never seen them, never will…
@@TheVinylLoungeMtl That’s too bad you never got to see them. I’m overdue for a Pump revisit.
Great summary of III. I suspect the overkill of the original Geffen tracks is because this is the first time Neil has had access to release the Geffen tracks. Remember how Original Series 13 14 20 21 jumped right over them? He did not have the rights at that point which was just recently. This could mean we might see more action via Neil of that period soon if he has done more than just licence the tracks for III
@@Noise11channel I hope so. Would love to see full versions of Johnny’s Island and the original Old Ways.
Intriguing review, I know you’re a huge appreciator of Nick Cave’s music so it’s interesting to hear that you’re still processing this challenging one. It does make me want to get this one, but so many others too, both solo and with the Bad Seeds. For so many years I’ve heard the raves about the live shows and I just got tickets for his May show in Minnesota, I’m really excited to finally see him!
@@roughfishmusic Thanks Joe. So glad you snagged tickets for the Minneapolis show. Should be an incredible show.
This is another cracking vid! Anyway, I'm interested to hear... if you were to pin down your favourite 3 tracks from this boxset which ones would they be?

@@MarkDoyle-tt5sf Restless genius is a great way to put it!
Thanks Todd, this really got me in the mood to dig in deep to the later Ramones catalog which I really hadn't before and I've been rocking out to the Ramones all week, it's been great. I loved your story about seeing them at Summerfest, how awesome is that? Especially the part about getting all those beers from people of age, feels very fitting in Ramones culture. I liked what you said about seasonal music listening too, before we went up north for a week in August I had made this massive playlist of electric guitar rock that defied all sub-genres whether it was classic rock, metal, punk, whatever and it was glorious. It happened to include a lot of Ramones but mostly the earlier stuff but I'll have to go back and add in all these gems from later records that I've discovered in the last week. Even on the albums that might not be so strong overall, there are certainly some great songs to be found. I can't think of many bands that had more of an impact than they did on music. I remember reading an article about them in Rolling Stone or somewhere when I was about 18 and wanting to be a musician and listening to serious music and they kind of scared me. I'd thought maybe it was all an act but they really did come off as these glue-sniffing weirdos with girlfriends in psych-wards and all that and maybe it hit too close to home to what I was trying to get away from. Not long after there was a guy at work who wanted to exchange cassettes we liked, I remember bringing him "Late for the Sky" by Jackson Browne which I was really absorbing, trying to deal with my cousin's recent suicide and he handed me the first few Ramones tapes and I thought, "Oh no." But wow, what a game changer that was, I was just starting to play music around then, mostly with older people who put down the Ramones all the time, "They can't even play a guitar solo!" and all that. And I'd seen this quote from George Harrison who said a lot of punk was just an excuse for bad playing. So, between them and bands like KISS, it was bit of an artistic quandary for a while. Luckily I saw a quote from Gene Simmons that started to put things in perspective when he said something like, "You don't see people buying Stanley Clarke lunch boxes." When I returned those Ramones tapes to my coworker and raved about them I asked him what he thought of the Jackson Browne tape and he just said this cryptic thing about how he likes any music with energy, then trailed off and stared off into space.
Oh yeah, I also smiled at the reflection of the ring light on the inner sleeve pic of Nick. Reinforced the cult leader idea. 😎
Excellent, excellent review/first impressions. I love that you share not only your deep appreciation of Cave and his catalogue, but also what you love and what you are unsure about with this new record. It’s so great to have a new record from such an important artist imho. Your deep dive and long form approach was thoroughly enjoyable and has been informing my listening experience. I mention this video in my upcoming Japan Vinyl Tag 2024 post. Hope you got tix for the spring show at the Paramount (what a great venue!). I have one for here in Vancouver. Cheers!
Thanks! I haven't listened to it in the past week, mostly because I'm in deep with the Neil Young 's Archives III. Looking further to many more spins. I'm so glad he's playing at the Paramount. We ended up scoring floor seats. So I'm excited about that! Glad you got tickets for Vancouver.
@@lostmixtapes You are one step ahead of me. I received my NYA Vol 3 a few days ago but have yet to give it a listen. Will need to sequester myself for awhile to begin absorbing the massive amount of content.
@@fitzelectricbar9268 I didn’t get the box, so couldn’t comment on the films, just the audio. JUST the audio…that’s about 17 hours long!
Thank you, man, for this overview.
I have a hard time calling Wild God a “religious album”. Nick’s always had an unorthodox approach to religion in his music dating back to the Birthday Party stuff. I think if your just pulling the superficial aspects from the record you might come to that conclusion but again it’s all applied in that strange Nick Cave way. Same with all the talk of “Joy” and “Euphoria” - it’s there in small fits and bursts, but this record is still by and large standard Nick Cave fare. Sonically the record is really theatrical and cinematic sounding - if I were to compare it to past works, it really reminds me of The Good Son record and some of that early 90’s soundtrack stuff like (I’ll Love You) Till the End of the World or the Let Love In b-side “Cassiel’s Song”- all that stuff played with that more cinematic sound and a lot of Wild God really sits comfortably with those kind of songs. Overall I’ve come to really like the album a lot. Thought it was fine on first listen, but really grew to appreciate it more on subsequent spins. Probably my favorite Bad Seeds record since Dig Lazarus Dig!!!
@@theuglyinsect4093 Love your comparisons to The Good Son and soundtrack work. Love You Till The End Of The World…forgot about that song. It was one of the first songs to turn me on to him.

@@gerardfletcher1203 Thanks. And welcome!
Great video again! I'm with you, this record definitely won't be in my all time favourite Nick Cave records, despite it being still good. I'm pleased how you didn't include Push the Sky Away in the trilogy of Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen, and Wild God, as I've always believed that it's got it's unique value about it especially given it was written before Nick's sons deaths. Personally Push the Sky Away is if not my favourite N. Cave record (but note that changes a lot!). I'm not a big fan of the auto-tune and the synthesizers throughout the record myself. I understand the lyrics are "pure" but these two things really take away from purity of the music in the record and make it as you said more like Ghosteen. So, in turn you're not hearing the Bad Seeds in full flight in my opinion. I definitely will be keen to see Nick perform these songs because I think it will no doubt allow these songs to lift significantly!
@@willmcfall7675 Totally. I’m already anticipating a future live album of the tour.
Is Boatman’s Call the album to start with? Haven’t got into his music at all but feel he is for me, in a strange kind of way.
@@jonassvensson6129 I think it’s probably his best overall album. It’s more of a solo thing with the Bad Seeds taking a backseat on most of it. Exceptional songs where he examines a relationship. Let Love In for more if a full Bad Seeds experience. Push The Sky Away for the entry point to the more recent era.
To me 1990' to 1994' and 97' the boatman's call is Nick's peak ...strong ...unforgettable melodies...I like his stuff since...but i just find it a little overrated...wild god is really uneven to my ears...miles away from my idea of Nick at his peak...
@@stephanevillatte5970 I need to revisit the early 90s records again. It’s been a while. Of those, Let Love In is the one I listen to the most.
I like the album a lot, my favorite Nick album since Grinderman II and my favorite Bad Seeds since Lazarus. I have to say, my avid devotion to Nick Cave is largely based on his magnificent run of albums from Your Funeral, My Trial through Grinderman II, including yes, Nocturama which I actually love. Starting with Push the Sky Away, I don't find his music nearly as interesting, and I think he isn't as sharp lyrically. His lyrics are more personal now, which is fine, but I prefer the baroque imagery of earlier albums. Still, Wild God is a really strong record, perhaps his most cinematic. I don't like it as well as most of the albums from my preferred period, yet, but I still need to listen to it some more. No More Shall We Part is my favorite, it comes close to being a top ten album of all time for me. Anyway, thanks for the video, really enjoyed it. I'm hoping to see Nick and the band when they swing through Columbus in May.
@@chrisboerger465 No More Shall We Part is the one that really turned me on to him. Bought it used on CD when it was still his latest record. Played it once while cleaning my apartment and kept picking up the CD to look at song titles because so many songs were so beautiful and completely blowing me away. I never really got into the early stuff pre-Tender Prey as much, but love that a song like Tupelo is still such a staple live.
It's a very good record. I think both Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen are better, but I can see why people would prefer this one. You haven't mentioned Carnage at all, though.
@@bwpm1467 I meant to. I think Carnage is great, and in some ways sounds more like a Bad Seeds record than this one. I think it fits somewhere in the whole thematic landscape of the last 3 records for sure, but feels like slight detour into Covid and isolation on a more general level. What are your thoughts on Carnage?
@@lostmixtapesI really like Carnage. I think it is also better, overall, than Wild God. Additionally, Carnage has quite a dynamic mastering, by modern standards.
Still absorbing the record. I like it so far. I did a “Side One Spotlight” on it on my radio show yesterday. I’m only a moderate Cave fan, saw him once at Lollapalooza in 1994. He was surprisingly great for playing in the middle of the day on a bill with Beastie Boys.
@@Thedarkstuff I saw him on that 1994/Lolla tour as well. Forgot to mention that. I don’t have real vivid memories of it, but remember being intrigued by him. Shoot…I would have liked to hear that segment from your show.
Saw that same tour. Yeah, it was weird seeing Nick playing in the middle of a gorgeous sunny day. Unfortunately, due to the gorgeous weather and the early time of day, not a lot of people were paying attention, but I was enraptured.
my top 3, in that order!!
Thanks for checking it out.
Holy shit! Amazing!!!!
Another great video. My entry point was Pleasant Dreams which weirdly was kind of vilified which I always found confusing. Totally agree on RamonesMania. End to end that is mind blowingly impressive. It’s a rich catalogue. I think The Archivist nailed it with the optics and imagery of the band which acted as both a propellant and deterrent in my opinion. I also think the brilliant simplicity of the band made some miss the point. My hard rock buddies would say “that music is awful” In any event I love your enthusiasm for a deep catalogue dive. 1-2-3-4 indeed!
Thanks. Yeah, there weren't any virtuoso instrumentalists in the band, but you could say they were songwriting virtuosos in some sense.
I understand the disdain for the word “collector”. To me it sounds like the “collection” is more important than the music. Love the John Prine song, Summer’s End. Very moving. I still haven’t been able to truly get into his music. Someone I know I should like more than I have until now. A work in progress for me.
Talking about their crazy lyrics, apparently they had trouble registering their lyrics to I Don’t Wanna Walk Around With You. I don't wanna walk around with you I don't wanna walk around with you I don't wanna walk around with you So why you wanna walk around with me? I don't wanna walk around with you I don't wanna walk around with you I heard that they were initially told that they couldn’t claim publishing rights to 2 lines of lyrics. Not sure if that’s true but it always makes me smile.
@@fitzelectricbar9268 That’s hilarious. On my Ramones kick I was getting that song confused with I Want You Around to become something like “I want you around/so why don’t you wanna be around me/oh oh oh.”
Great video. Always wonderful to re-visit The Ramones. I remember one journalist “back in the day” reviewing one of their albums and he said that on another planet this record represented yet another “smash” hit and yet another record full of more top 10 singles. That really resonated with me. If ever a band deserved to have a string of chart-topping singles it was the Ramones. The Archivist was right…they didn’t look the part. But for those of us in the know, they had one of the biggest strings of singles with a bullet. I think I’m long overdue to crack open my Ramones records once again. Gabba Gabba Hey!
Growing up, I would see older kids wearing Ramones T-shirts, and I initially assumed they were this really aggressive punk band. And then I listened to "Ramones Mania", and I was like, "These guys are a pop band at their core". Certainly, they played loud and fast, and the lyrics could be considered juvenile, but they had pop melodies and harmonies. I always really loved those rare-ish moments on those early albums when they slowed things down a bit and went into sweet ballad territory. One, it gave you a chance to catch your breath, but two, they were really, really good at those. Songs like 'Questioningly', 'Needles and Pins', and 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend'. There is a specific demo version of 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend' that goes right around 3:00 in length that is even better than the one on the album. Joey hangs on the word "Boyfriend" for an extra beat or so, and that subtle alteration just makes the song a little dreamier. ua-cam.com/video/0U6oYjPqzJ0/v-deo.html
@@aronpolasek4506 I love those sweet songs Joey would come up with. Makes me sad that he didn’t seem to be too lucky in the romance department. Yeah, based on their image you’d think they’d sound a lot more aggressive and less melodic. I have friends who when their kids were little loved their songs…just so catchy and fun. Well, as long as you’re not playing the ones about doing acid or sniffing glue.

Just like Motorhead, The Ramones never put out a bad album, IMO.
I need to revisit Brain Drain. I don't remember it at all. My intro to the band was Mania, also. I actually liked their 90s records with CJ Ramone. Dee Dee still wrote, he was just didn't play with them any longer. He had that rap career to tend to.
@@Thedarkstuff I’m going to check out the ones I missed. Dee Dee’s rap career…hilarious. Brain Drain is good. Heavier record.
Weird coincidence, I just finished listening to End of the Century on vinyl a few minutes ago. I have all their studio albums plus their first live album It’s Alive (they kinda went a little nuts with the live cash-ins in their final days, Its Alive is really all the live Ramones you need). Of their studio albums, there are maybe 2 or 3 that aren’t worth much, all the rest are at the very least pretty good and those first four are all stone cold classics.
@@briangonigal3974 Yeah, I bought Loco Live back in the day and didn’t really care for it. I’d probably add End of the Century to their classic run. Crazy that you were just listening to it!
Hi,Funny but my favorite ... by far... is 92' '' mondo bizarro ''...at their melodic best...well recorded and produced (Ed Stasium)...not a bad track ...top to bottom on fire...5 stars for me.

Pump was the end for me. But love all of them up to there. Even PV. I like Draw the Line! It’s kinda weird, but I always thought “Kings and Queens” was among their best.
I like "Kings and Queens" and love the song "Draw the Line." Maybe someday the whole record will click for me. They have to have had one of the best comebacks in history.
@@lostmixtapes listening to Draw the Line now. Really liking it!
