5 Favorite Jazz Albums

  • I'm not an expert on jazz. I know what I like. And I have been listening to it a lot in the last few years. Here are my top 5 favorite jazz albums. The list may change at some point. I kind of wish it would if it meant finding albums I enjoy even more than these five.
I used to find jazz pretty elusive. Hard to get into. That's not really the case anymore. I know what I like, which makes it a lot easier.

All great-great albums. If I had to pick just five, this list works for me.

We are in the exact same category of “jazz listeners”. I own all of these albums and couldn’t agree more. Thanks!

Very enjoyable and I relate to your jazz perspective. My interests have “developed” and grown a little bit over the years but get easily turned off by the honking and chaotic quality of a big chunk of jazz. That description of Jazz- about it being like throwing instruments down the stairs- is exactly what turns me off. Sometimes I think I am pretty much into the ballads and blues-based jazz only. Anyway, familiar with the Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and, of course, Miles’ record but will need to give the Kenny Burrell and Dexter Gordon records a listen.

Yeah…anything that fits that description usually doesn’t agree with me.

My own attitude to jazz is similar to yours so I found this fascinating. Mood is everything.
Others to recommend of similar vein-
Gerry Mulligan Night Lights, Bill Evans Waltz for Debby, Art Blakey Moanin', Lee Morgan Sidewinder. That Kenny Burrell is great, but also try Idle Moments by Grant Green too❤

Wow, thanks for all of the suggestions. I think we have a few of those. I’ll pull them out.

@@lostmixtapes sorry my suggestion for a "grabber reacher with a rotating jaw" took up more space than the liner notes to a "history of blue note" box set. i didn't think it was going to post and in order to view it, you have to leave you tube. if i knew how to remove it, i would. all apologies.

Im the same, im all about the "feels" i don't care about technical virtuosity or how fast someone can play or what vocal gymnastics they can do, most jazz to me just sounds the same, i could live with 10 jazz albums and id have the gist of the entire genre, i don't need 200 jazz albums that all offer the same feeling

As much as my taste in jazz has evolved in more recent years, Kind of Blue will always be an album I never tire of. I don’t need an audiophile copy to validate that, but I sure as hell would love the opportunity to hear that UHQR.

You make a great point about the backup players getting a mention on the cover. Rock/pop solo artists should do that. I have 3 Bill Frisell CDs from the 90s that I put on when I'm in the mood. It's nice guitar oriented jazz and of course modern. But I enjoy them

Pretty much like everything I’ve heard from Bill Frisell.

Are there any living musicians playing jazz? Almost every music video I watch where the presenter talks about his or her favorite jazz albums it seems it's always the same 8 or 10. I just wonder if all jazz is 50 years old and all musicians playing jazz are dead. Smashing choices, by the way, these are incredible records.

Thanks, I like Bill Frisell quite a bit. Contemporary jazz guitarist. Super prolific in numerous combos. Valentine is a good one.

One must not "dabble" in jazz.
    One must immerse.
    Cool selection.
    Peace on earth.

Nice overview, and we overlap quite a bit when it comes to the 'moods' of jazz to pick and choose from. Ballads was pretty much my intro to John Coltrane (along with My Favorite Things), and Kind of Blue needs no explanation. In the same vein for me is Oscar Peterson solo (his Verve series of 'plays the Harold Arlen Songbook'; 'plays the Cole Porter Songbook', etc.) and the Oscar Peterson Trio (particularly Live in Chicago). Thanks for putting this out there! Good stuff!
