Music's greatest ever comeback? Cher, Kylie, Mariah or Tina?

  • Cher, Kylie, Mariah & Tina, four music legends who during dips in their careers, looked as if their time in the sun had come to a very definite end. But against a lot of odds, these four extraordinary women, fought their way back, to achieve phenomenal success & confound their critics.
So just what made these four comebacks so special? And how can anyone determine the ultimate pop comeback? Well, I am going to try by marking each comeback on commercial success (single and album), critical success, cultural impact and who had the furthest to come back from their lowest points.

Tina’s comeback was the most iconic ! An abused woman who’s husband took every cent from her and tried to prevent her from ever working again. A black woman in her 40s who was able to occupy and be successful performing rock n roll/pop which we know was mainly considered in those times “white music”. Tina’s comeback has broken so many barriers and opened doors for so many black women that have come after her such as Rihanna and Beyoncé. She is Queen 👑

Mariah’s triumphant comeback in 2005 was a classic!
Her album cuts off that project was just as awesome as her singles during that era.
While MINE AGAIN, CIRCLES and FLY LIKE A BIRD are treasures of gold, the forgotten works of art like STAY THE NIGHT and YOUR GIRL are complete gems. Kanye West killed it on Stay The Night and I wish Your Girl was an even longer song.
On the deluxe album, the remix to WE BELONG TOGETHER was a banger that sadly got overshadowed that summer but understandably so since the original still was topping the charts along with SHAKE IT OFF.

Yes. Tina’s new label was hesitant to promote her. But Mariah had the entire industry and Tommy Mottola actively against her. TV shows around the world made fun of her for years. She had 9/11 to deal with. Plus her family tried to place her in a conservatorship, just a year having been named Artist of the Millennium and signing the biggest record deal in history. The score for “Climb” should have been 10. Also, TEOM was the second biggest selling album worldwide of 2005, and the biggest selling solo album of the year. The score should have been higher. She had 10 Grammy nominations for TEOM including the main categories and a bunch of other awards, so “Critical Acclaim” should have been higher too.
You also didn’t consider that Mariah Carey came back with a true R&B album that she wrote and produced, while the others had pop radio-friendly records.

I think Tina's was the greatest just because literally nobody five years prior to Private Dancer would've ever predicted that her biggest period was still to come, she was counted out, people figured she had nothing to offer without Ike, and yet she rose like a phoenix and became a bigger star than she ever was with Ike. Mariah, Kylie and Cher have all had great comebacks too, but there was never the doubt lingering in their corners the way almost every record company laughed off the idea of signing a middle aged Tina.

One thing regarding Impact that Tina Turner caused that is NOT based upon musical style, but still notable.... Tina's comeback and impact in music in the US, most especially, showed the music industry 'powers that be' that older stars coming back could happen and be lucrative. Tina's comeback paved the way for other "has been" artists to get another consideration, and I think that other labels immediately looked for their "Tina Turner". That's why Aretha Franklin, Cher, Natalie Cole and a few other artists were suddenly out with a revamped, current sound, and I think that's why listeners were suddenly so receptive to "artists from another era doing a new thing" and got airplay. Tina started that in the 80s.

Still, Tina continued as live act for years after Ike. Her comback was well earned. Mariah had alot to prove after being institutionalized & being sabotaged by her ex. Unlike the other three MC was persona-non-grata to the public. Her determination to get back to the top was based on sheer will & her many talents besides her singing.

While all of these comebacks are huge staples in music, I have to give respect to Tina's groundbreaking comeback the most. Came out of a divorce from the worst husband ever, the money from her disco efforts were not enough and she started performing in small venues now that she was deemed a has-been. Less than a decade later she somehow comes back with ONE OF THE MOST GROUNDBREAKING ERAS of the whole of the 80s with private dancer. This album had 3 top ten hits and 1 incredibly iconic #1 hit and sold 15m physical copies (30m+ with all formats combined). It didn't even stop there as she continued to have 2 more very successful eras and gained another iconic hit with the mad max soundtrack. Her tours were always sold out even into her 60s and she ALWAYS gave her all when performing. She literally went from rock bottom to outer space and that needs to be appreciated way more.

None of the others were publicly humiliated and written off as Mariah was during the early 00's. Yes Cher and Tina's comebacks were also astounding but they were artists who were just past their prime and have become legacy artists. Public still loved them and regarded them as legends.
No one was rooting for Mariah and no one handed her a hit song. She had to work for that comeback to happen. I'd give her extra points just for writing & producing that entire album.

She tried to come back in 2003 with Charmbracelet album and the sales weren’t as good as her prior albums, so people were definitely writing her off and “shelving” her. So i remember how Big a Massive FAILURE Glitter was for Mariah, She was the butt of every Joke & no one wanted to touch her! Then Mimi came out & it was such a SMASH💯 So much so, that i have developed this theory that Janet Jackson (Miss Jackson) only dated Jermaine's Dupri so that he could orchestrate her the same kind of magic🪄 he did for Mariah, which sadly he couldn't do.
I agree with you, i LOVE Kylie, bought Cher's "Believe" album, & was old enough to remember Mimi's incarnation & how HUGE That Comeback was💥⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

But Kylie's Fever era as a comeback is an interesting point of debate. 2 decades later, she scored her most critically acclaimed career era so far with Tension. But I don’t think people truly understand what Tina had to overcome in the late 1970s to early 1980s compared to now. A lot went down: she left an extremely abusive relationship with barely any money, let go by record labels, and was told she was too old, among others. I agree, she had the greatest comeback followed by Cher and Mariah as a tie for me.

Going by Grammys, Mariah might have only won three... but she was nominated for 10 awards between 2006 and 2007. She was nominated in all major categories (for the third time over, after 1991 and 1996).
Going by strictly that, she deserves a 9.
Cultural: I want to say that her take on the beat-ballad (which is what WBT is) was copied numerous times in the US after that. Mary J. Blige and Beyonce in partcular got huge hits following that template.
Btw: in 2005 the physical singles market was dead. Itunes launched in 2003. WBT sold 20,000 physical singles in the US which is less than Obsessed did in 2009. WBT only got a limited release. That should not be held against her. WBT went 6xP in the US due to streaming today which shows how popular the song still is.
Sidenote to Cher's Believe in the UK: Mariah's Xmas song is certified 7xP as of right now indicating units sales of 4,2 million in the country which is almost twice as much as Believe. It is one of the biggest songs ever in the country and globally.

      Going by your feedback. It is of course open to interpretation but;
I based on Grammy awards not nominations
Don’t think physical sales were completely dead in 2005- in the UK that is not true. It was definitely going that way
The influence of WBT on beat ballads is a good point. I take that on board.
Where is that certification for AIWFC? Is that US? I can’t find that for UK? Double checked my sources & Believe is still the highest paid for purchase single by female artist in Britain en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_singles_in_the_United_Kingdom

All of them are awesome, iconic and legends. But Mariah Carey's comeback garnered her earned her several music industry awards and nominations throughout 2005 and 2006. The song broke chart records in the United States and became Carey's sixteenth topper on the US Billboard Hot 100. After staying at number one for fourteen nonconsecutive weeks, it joined four other songs in a tie as the third longest running number one song in US chart history, behind Carey's own 1995 collaboration with Boyz II Men titled "One Sweet Day". Billboard listed it as the "song of the decade" and the fifteenth most popular song of all time. Additionally, it broke several airplay records, gathering both the largest one-day and one-week audiences in history. "We Belong Together" also topped the charts in Australia; and reached the top-five in more than ten countries, including Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom. And from the same album Shake It Off became #2 on the Billboard chart. Fyi for me MC still holds the song with the longest song at number no hate to the songs who went to top it 😂.

Agreed 100% with your views here. You’re right in saying in Ireland “We Belong Together” wasn’t as big as “Believe” or “Can’t Get You Outta my head”. I think though the world had moved on by 2005 & it was a different industry (the iPod / mp3 players had changed the music landscape)
Believe was definitely of it’s time as dance music was all in when it was released e.g Chicane/ DJ Otzy/ Eiffel 65/ Robert Miles/ Moby/ Faithless.
The video for Can’t get you outta my head is memorable as being a marker of the new millennium. Everyone then wanted to do ultra futuristic videos e.g Victoria Beckham with “Not Such An Innocent Girl”/ Britney with “Oops I Did It Again”
We Belong Together is a great song, but it doesn’t have that cultural impact.
I wasn’t around for Tina Turner’s 80s era so can’t comment. However I do remember being at countless parties in the 90s/ early 00s where “The Best” would be played, so it must’ve resonated culturally in some ways.

Cher really gambled on her dance album but it was exactly the refreshening of her sound that she needed and she's not strayed too far from it since.
Kylie had always had her loyal fans but it was critical recognition she needed and got with her one two punch of Light Years and Fever, she isn't as culturally siginificant in the USA as the UK and Australia and she's having another return thanks to Padam Padam and the Tension album.
Mariah has always been a much bigger success in the USA than the UK though we have placed a lot of her hits in the Top 10 but we never embraced her like we did Whitney and Tina.
Speaking of Whitney she had something of a comeback in 1999 with My Love Is Your Love as did Lady GaGa with Chromatica but lss so due to CoVid.

    you can do another video.
Nelly Furtado - Folklore 2003, was a failure. Loose 2006, was a successful comeback.
    P!nk - Try this 2003, was a failure. I'm not dead 2006, was a great comeback.
Madonna - American life 2003, controversial release at the time. amazing comeback with Confessions on a dancefloor 2005.
Beyonce 4 from 2011, critics thought this was her last album, being married & pregnant. but she recovered in 2013, with the self-titled album.

Yes you should take into consideration that when mimi came out people wasn’t buying physical copies of albums .. Adele’s numbers wasn’t effected because she didnt put it on streaming platforms therefore you had to physically buy it

Okay, thanks for this. Didn’t Adele have 21 on streaming platforms? It wouldn’t make much of a difference to the final score anyway

"It's not a comeback because I have never gone", I don't remember who said that, and I like what it means. All of them have incredible careers and they've gone through shifts that definitely changed everything. I think that the ones that struggled the most were Tina and Mariah. Industry ageism hit very hard on Tina, and Mariah, like you said, was going through an armageddon, a real career implosion. Even her fans left her for dead at that time. It was sad see her career agonizing that way. Heartbreaking for sure, even for me that never cared too much for her work. As far as I remember, may be the 1st major canceling that have happened before "canceling" become a negative culture. I was also a baby when Tina made her solo breakthrough, but I remember her massive influence in late 80's, it was crazy how she took the world. I was never a huge fan of Cher, but even though Believe album didn't get great reviews at that time I've always considered it an incredible dance album together with Madonna's RoL and Kylie's Light Years. Late 90's was an incredible dance music journey for me.

As a Cher stan myself, I think you did a pretty good job here and stayed objective.
Tina had indeed one of the biggest comebacks ever and even built her brand and a whole new career after that, so the impact is immense. However, I don't think there is a need to shade JLO because of Mariah. She also had her comeback with the album Love? & single On the floor, so there is no need to put those amazing women against one another as they all have their fans and admirable career paths.
Having a comeback is not that easy and many stars didn't manage to have one so congratulations to our comeback queens!
I am sad Cher didn't manage to have another one with closer to the truth album but who knows what the future holds. It's amazing that Kylie is riding high again with Tension!
And the question remains who will have the next biggest comeback.
I am personally rooting for Katy Perry. I think she is in the place right now where everybody is writting her off and I think she could pull something amazing off again if the stars would align for her like back in the day.

I think they're all different in their own right. Tina had a really tough, personal story behind hers (and I agree with her being considered the greatest comeback), Cher's related to ageism and Mariah fought media stigma. With Kylie I feel the difference is that if Tina, Cher and Mariah hadn't had a comeback, they would've stayed icons. With Kylie, she was fading into obscurity at that point. She would've now been a genuine "I don't know her" rather than someone labelled as past her prime. Her comeback with Spinning Around (and subsequently Can't Get You Out Of My Head) carved her own slice in pop history, something that the other three had already.
