How Kylie masterminded her comeback

- In the year 2000 pop princess Kylie pulled off one of music’s most triumphant ever comebacks. Just as it looked as if the Aussie showgirl career was on the scrapheap, Kylie confounded her critics by returning to the top of the charts in both the UK and her home country.
So just had did she pull off such a momentous comeback? What’s the story behind the songs on Light Years such as Spinning Around? Does Paula Abdul ever regret giving it away? Who originally sang ‘On a Night Like This' and album track ‘I’m so high?’ Why didn’t ‘Your Disco needs You’ get released as a single in the UK & Australia and how did Guy Chambers feel about it? This mini-documentary explores these questions and more.

Spinning Around is a timeless masterpiece ✨️
I listen to it at least once a day. Love this album it changed my life
THIS! 🙌🏽
yeah methinks it still sounds brilliant! And I love its message of renewal and starting over.
@@jonnyharvey me too, it’s managed to help get back on track when I’m feeling down.
It's crazy how this era was kinda make or break for Kylie after a good run in the 80s and early 90s... This album is so special for that reason, it put Kylie on the map as one of the biggest pop stars in the world and got Kylie touring big pop shows and the start of Kylie as a brand and to where she is today with the DISCO album in 2020 and her career in general!! 23 years wow all hail the QUEEN 👑💙👌💿
Yeah isn’t it? People talk so casually about comebacks but Light Years truly was a comeback. It would’ve been game over if it hadn’t worked out.
@@jonnyharvey agreed. Very true! 💯
And now, 35 years into her career, she is still innovative and interesting. And in the charts! Her new album "Tension" could be her best! Thats crazy!
isn't it? 35+ years 😀
Agreed! Tension is her best since Aphrodite .
She became one of my favorite artists after listening to her entire discography in a week last March. It’s too bad I’m american because I won’t find another fan in person or a concert near me 😭 but she is absolutely amazing.
I don’t know. Kylie has a small but loyal following in the States.
@@jonnyharvey I’m part of it but have yet to meet another fan over here.
Kylie has been so consistent since this comeback. It’s impossible (Princess?) not to love her. DISCO was such a fun album, but these early 2000s hits can’t be beaten. Bonus points for Gizmo
Thank you - yes she has been brilliant especially since 2000. So many solid albums
on a night like this gives me so much late 90s/ early 2000s nostalgia 🥲
I know, it brings you right back, doesn't it?
Amazing how many songs on that album could have been singles.....it is the album that just keeps on giving!
Yeah there were four- they could’ve gone to seven with Butterfly, DD & YDNY
Really concise reporting, no fluff just a reveal of how Kylie reclaimed her place on the dance scene.
Thank you 😀🙏
Fun fact: Paula Abdul and Kylie Minogue exchanged tracks. "I'm Just Here for the Music” was originally sung by Kylie (and became unreleased) but ended up being released by Paula in 2008 LOL
Did it really? Okay I have to look it up now.
@@jonnyharvey Yes really. Let me know ;)
You're right!
I never paid attention to her until about 12 years ago and now I’m in love with her. Her songs make happy, she’s just plain lovely.
Wonderful tribute. Having lived through Kylie’s career I will never forget the joy of hearing Spinning Around for the first time. It definitely did find the right artist- its Paula’s story but it was also Kylie’s as well as even my own.
Yes Kylie definitely made it her own 😀
the album deserved light years and your disco needs you to have been released as proper singles... but not replacing the singles we got because they are also flawless pop songs...
yes I guess Parlophone didn't want to spend any more money on the album after the fourth single - they wanted to move on.
I’ve been a Kylie fan since the Golden era. Thank you so much for making these videos. You educate me about Kylie’s career :)
😀🙏
Yeah, I started listening to Kylie heavily around the same time as you did. I’m a fast learner in Kystory (Kylie history) though, so I knew a good amount of this stuff.
It's funny how _Light Years_ is so different from anything else Kylie has done. I feel like the album really was the bridge that carried Kylie from the 20th century to the 21st. The album is so disco 1970s sounding. Totally unlike the rest of her repertoire. The most "modern"-sounding tracks are 'Spinning Around', 'On A Night Like This', 'Kids' w Robbie Williams, and 'Please Stay'; all very 2000s pop. The rest is sooo borderline cheesy, 70s, very gay pride! Haha! ❤️
😀
Nah. Disco Down is a mastepiece
Once again you have done an amazing job! Thank you . Light Years is a terrific album - by far my favourite Kylie album - eclectic mix of pure power pop that stands the test of time ❤
Thank you 😀🙏
Disco Down and Butterfly deserved to be singles more than Your Disco Needs You
I love Disco Down - one of my favourite Kylie songs ever 😀
The fact that Your Disco Needs You wasn't given the single treatment because it was "too camp" isn't surprising, but it's disappointing. It's such a good song.
Agreed 😃
YDNY would’ve been a number 1 for Kylie. Miles Leonard needs his head reading
Yes I think they read too deeply into the whole ‘too camp’ thing
Thanks Jonny for the great work! 😉
Thank you 😀🙏
This has been wonderful opportunity to go down memory lane. 💿💥🎤
😀
Holy heck! Where did that behind-the-scenes footage on the album cover photoshoot come from?
It’s in the making of Light Years interview video on UA-cam where Kylie is talking about making the album & there is a window/glass door behind her
Hopefully you can make a video about the Disco era, thanks Jonny!!
I’d love to at some point but I will be focusing more in the noughties albums for now.
@@jonnyharvey and someday please do a video for Body Language - my favourite album 😃
I'm still salty that Kylie never got the recognition she deserved in the states!!! P.S. Aww, Gizmo just wanted some loves ♥
Yeah it’s such a shame but maybe she prefers it that way - less pressure
Kylie is ultimate Disco Diva, she is amazing. You did it again Jonny...!!! Well done...!!!
I love your cat...!!!
Greetings from Buenos Aires...!!!
Thank you 😀
Thank you for this video! I love Kylie so, so much!
You’re welcome 😀
Kylie is a queen.
Agreed
Thank you ❤
😀
Absolutely!!!!
I remember when Light Years was released, I felt like I was in a cult of special music fans who were the only ones who really knew how amazing the album was. Of course, the singles had an impact but, like you say, the climate for her popularity was so different (especially before the explosion of Fever!)
And it really is amazing. Kylie's albums generally are not strong. Light Years is, by far, her strongest. And pure joy to listen to.
I've never particularly enjoyed Spinning Around though. Maybe just the 'overplayed' factor, but I almost always skip it. OANLT is one of her top tracks ever however.
I think Kylie's albums are strong but I do agree with you that Light Years is her strongest. It's so solid
Brilliant! This was such a fantastic time, Kylie had been written off as over and it was a joy to see her return to the top, even better than before!
Yes it was a great era 😀
What makes Fever great to me is that it stirs new and unique feelings - is it hot and sexy or cold as ice, dancey or loungey, is Kylie wooing you to euphoria or to your doom....or is it all these things all at once?... Surely that is what great art does-delight, confuse, excite and seduce.
That’s a great way of putting it - yes good music transports you some place else & heighten your emotions. Sonically it’s a really solid body of work
Great documentary.
Thank you 😀
Great video, great research. I would like to know your opinion about the comercial success of Kylie´s recent two albums (Disco and Golden) , both went no1 in the UK, but the singles never had the success she was used to have. Does it have something to do about been independent now? or maybe It´s about her age?
Partly age but it’s mostly cause we’re in the streaming age, which make up most of the final charts
Age and fact she's more of an album artist then single driven artist..... It's more the whole body of work then just a moment.... But age and streaming definitely play parts as so many artist dont get number 1 singles anymore and people don't follow radio. 💿🤟
@@jonnyharvey I was thinking the same. Another question: What do you think happens with Kylie in the USA? Some people say her sound is very European, but if that was the case Cant Get You Out Of My Head, would have never been a hit there and artists like Lady Gaga would have never achieve success. Some other says Kylie had been block in different occasions by record labels to protect their female artist. What do you think? Thank you for anwsering.
@@chagobox Cant Get You Of Of My Head did still worse in America than everywhere elee in the world where it was a huge number 1 hit. Gaga came out in 2009 with electro pop not 2001. The trends were completely different by then. Also the age difference, there is ageism. By 2009 she was in her 40s
2023 and she is STILL on top ! PADAM !! ❤❤❤
I know - such a comeback 🙌🙌🙌
3:37 never heard about Lolly, kind of interested of knowing more about her
Not to be negative, but there's not that much on her. She did have an album out & she lasted a year or two. She was aimed at very young children. I think she still does some Gay Prides.
@@jonnyharvey I agree with you my friend, a Shame that Lolly didn't continue with her singing career, I watched her music videos and listened to her songs and I really liked her!! She is quiet funny and girly 🤣 hehehe
great video! Kylie is a legend and deserves so much better, i’m glad she’s getting a resurgence with padam padam. hopefully this Tension era will make a big impact
Thank you 😀😀 Yes really looking forward to Tension
Your disco needs you sounds like a cover - which is a bit of a compliment for a pop artist.
Been listening a lot to her mid nineties stuff and it is really good. Think it was a little bit desperate.
It does - it sounds like an old classic
@@jonnyharvey I have always thought it has a similar style as In The Navy by The Village People
Love your videos! fabulousss taste!!!
Thank you 😀🙏
PLEASE DO BODYLANGUAGE
I will at some point
YES
Very educational. I've watched 3 of your videos now and have decided to subscribe! 🙂
Thank you 😀🙏
Light Years was amazingggg
Madonna wearing that Kylie shirt was shady AF tho.
Why?
Thanks for this anything on Kylie is much appreciated 👍🏻🥂
😀🙏
Your disco needs you was also released as a single in Aus! I still have it lol
Was it? Sorry
‘’Let’s find outttsch!’’ 🤣🙈 cute irish accent… 🇮🇪 😉
😂😂😀😀
Think society need a channel like yours to reevaluate past pop hits and learn the story behind them, keep it up mate a great job
And definitely kudos to Kylie, a strong individual and the persona who shaped the tops of our times.
btw did you know she fought cancer mid '00, maybe a story for another vid
Thanks for your feedback 😀 Yes I knew about Kylie’s cancer battle in the mid-noughties. She genuinely is incredible 🙌
Another great video btw
Thank you 😀
@@jonnyharvey do you like Alanis Morrissette? Would love to see a video on JLP or SFIJ
It always amused me at the criticism of Kylie's music.
Better the Devil You Know is arguably pop perfection-which is a view shared by Neil Tennant.
With regard to this era, Spinning Around sounds even more incredible than it did 23 years ago.
On A Night Like This is a masterpiece.
Hello 🐈 Gizmo ❤️🙏
BTDYK is a classic. So are the other two 😀
The criticism was of awful Stock/Aitken/ Waterman hits like "I Should Be So Lucky" (very repetitive and just not a tuneful chorus) - one of their worst songs in my opinion.
The other criticism was of Kylie's WEAK vocals. Very noticeable in her early songs. Very nasally tone and a thin voice. Frankly her singing made my average- person singing sound pretty good! I've never trained or even done anything more than a bit of singing in the school choir in my pre-teens. But I can hold a tune and don't have such a nasally, tinny voice. With a bit of practice and a coach I could probably have done a lot better than Minogue on her early work -not that I'm saying I'd have sounded good, but at least better than Minogue. Anf that's my point. They dubbed her "the singing budgie" for a reason.
A nobody with a weak and not very attractive voice like hers wouldn't havr made it past the answering machine of a local record company! It's only because she was already famous and hitting the heights of popularity in the U.K. - and very attractive - that she got all those opportunities.
Over time, her vocal abilities improved. But like Paula Abdul, her voice isn't really anything special at all. Neither would make it as session singers - just not good enough. And when you compare their singing to other singers, well they sound like amateur hour at the local pub.
@@jonnyharveyAbdul's voice is probably worse. Shares similar weak, thin, nasally, strained qualities to Minogue.
Likewise for J.Lo.
Minogue could go louder though, it seems to me. In her duet with Jason Donovan (an alright voice with better tone etc. than Minogue, but still quite ordinary and average) she often drowns him out with her volume.
Awww gizmo is adorable
Isn’t he? 😍
Great insight video...Thanks
😀
She's a legend! Love!
AMAZING JOB!!!!
😀🙏
I actually really like Kylie Minogue. I was really young when "Fever" was released and I had a lot of judgment about her apparent sluttiness, how her face indicated she was well over 30, but she was still flaunting her body in these really revealing outfits. Only after looking at interviews of her, I realize she seems to be such a nice and genuine person, and her songs were actually really good. As a performer, she's top-tier. I would have never guessed she struggled to stay relevant; she remains so likeable today.
Your videos are fantastic 🎉
Thank you so much 😀🙏
Videos from this channel really makes my mornings better ☺ Like today... it is now again gray, cold and wind is terrible and watching videos about my favorite popstars here plus revisiting music videos gives me fuel for another day of corporation jungle. 😋 I like how many visuals is used in videos and that it is well researched and not only someone opinions.
thanks for that feedback - glad it's brightening up your day 😀
Thank you for yet another great video. (You are a man with fabulous taste in music.)
"Light Years" was such a great era.

Another fantastic and very interesting video. So well researched. I remain a HUGE fan of your work!

What a amazing video my music friend ....thank You !
thank you 😀😀
absolutely fascinating all the songwriting background, was not aware of the involvement of all these people whose work I knew of with other artists or their work with Minogue on this album.
😀🙏
I really enjoyed this album from her than Fever. I think that she would have been more popular had she released this here in the states.
Yes I prefer Light Years to Fever - I think overall it’s a more consistent album but Fever had the bigger hits.
Only Kylie , enjoy yourself , fever , body language , Aphrodite and disco were released in 🇺🇸 but if we had gotten more chances to get her albums over here I’m sure something would have caught on. Her US promo team should have done better. She was a pop star who had dance appeal like Madonna but she was a much kinder person than M and had a sweeter voice. No comparison but at least they could have promoted her in that dance pop circle. In the dance club charts Kylie is a super star though! Check out her billboard stats for dance club songs!
For me, Light Years is the best Kylie album. Every song is a bop and one of my favourites on there is Bittersweet Goodbye, which is the only ballad and completely different to everything else she has done before and since. The Almighty remix of Your Disco is still one of the best that Almighty produced.
Agreed - overall it’s her most solid album.
Kylie didn’t have any big support in US in early 2000’s! Producers/ managers never liked much the idea that an Australian singer was becoming a global pop star!! Britney, Jlo, Aguilera were promoted like no other instead.
Yes I guess the Disco sound wouldn’t have worked for the American market & Capitol weren’t that strong in America at the time.
@@jonnyharvey probably but still think that if she was American the story would’ve been very different. Even Madonna recognized her success and strong presence in the industry, wearing a tshirt with her name on that MTV Awards night. Kylie and her Fever album meant the new millennium, fresh new stuff, totally timeless til nowadays.
I wish under the influence of love was a single along with kylie 's cover of physical from the live in sydney show
Yeah I think ‘UTIOL’ could’ve been a hit. It’s a great cover
@@jonnyharvey agreed👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿💚
Wow! So interesting. Now I wonder about the version with the "hideous" Status Quo-ish guitar riff. Can it be heard somewhere? Please, tell me where I can listen to it! :)
I’d love to hear it too. I’m pretty sure it hasn’t leaked, I’ve checked a few times
I can’t wait for her new album to drop next may! ❤
Me neither - it’s coming very soon 😀
Loved Kylie's Confide in me -:) I know her "Light years" was the Comeback of Kylie but for some reason the album was a bit too forced as if someone hit me with stick "Disco is cool " ..now " Fever" was her masterpiece and one of the best comeback in Pop music history.
Yes Fever is a classic.
I've enjoyed your video. I would also love to see your book collection.
By the way, Your Disco Needs You was released and charted in Switzerland and Australia as well. Well, I don't know if the single was fully released in Switzerland, but I remember it charting there. I think it may have also charted on a radio-based chart in another European country.
thanks for adding that, I missed that point - I will have to google how it did in Australia now.
My book collection - as in do a video just on my books? I have far more in my room - I should've bought a bigger book shelf.
gizmo is THE pop icon!
😀🙏 well he acts like royalty and everything belong to him- he definitely has the attitude 😹🐈⬛

I know - it’s so exciting!!!!!
@@jonnyharvey it really is - i grew up with her music because my aunt was a huge fan and im so glad she's getting the recognition she's always deserved
Looks like Kylie's perfect derrier got you all tongue-tied :-) Give Gizmo greetings from Los Angeles, CA !
love your video, she knows how to do a comeback
Thank you 😀
Another great video, even though I didn’t like light-years, at all, but it is interesting to know this background info, PS, we would love to see more of gizmo
Thank you 😀 Gizmo is very temperamental, sleeps most of the day, not a reliable performer 😂
I luv Kylie so much 👑♥️
Me too 😀❤️
Robbie was so generous with Kylie.
hey Jonny, amazing work as always! but may I ask, why are your videos 480p? I guess they would look amazing in Full HD ✨
I always edit in 1080p. In FCP I always select 1080p- I think it’s cause a lot of the footage is very old & only available in 480p/720p. Is that the problem? Are you watching on a TV screen?
@@jonnyharvey I mean, old footage is no problem at all, I always watch your videos on my TV or PC monitor, both are 4K. However, on UA-cam settings, your videos are always only available up to 480p. 🤔
I'm not really a fan of her music, but this video was insightful and interesting. Gizmo is mega cute
Isn’t he? 😀🙏
Please do a Body Language video- one of my favourite albums
I'll have to do one soon - I love that album!
Slow inspired me to go to to Barcelona !
Impossible princess is her best album
Had no idea the impact of those shorts nice information
😀
True fans know, she never left!
Just cause she didn’t leave, doesn’t mean it wasn’t a comeback. She was pretty much dropped by her record label, she hadn’t had a big hit in years & then she came back with a huge era & her first number one in ten years. Yes I very much think it was a comeback.
Come back ??? She was always here !!!!
Her career went very quiet in the late 90s which I fully explain in the video
Butterfly should have been a single
It almost was. Yes a lot of fans would agree with you
I can't wait for the new chapter: Padam Padam / Tension
Can you make a video about Kylie Minogue body language. 20 year anniversary this year.
I love Body Language - I'd like to a tribute video on it at some point. I am working on a Kylie video atm for next week though 😀
DISCO DOWN should have been a single
I agree - one of my favourite Kylie songs ever
@@jonnyharvey its ROMANTIC and I like that in my KYLIE songs... thats why I like LOOK MY WAY from the first album
Why you never call her Kylie Minogue? Most people anticipate the name "Kylie" alone with Kylie Jenner
Goddess
AI answer why someone may not like Kylie Minogue:
1. People may dislike Kylie Minogue because of personal issues that they have not resolved, such as jealousy or envy towards her success or popularity.
2. It is possible that a man may have had a negative experience with a woman who shares similar characteristics to Kylie Minogue, which could influence his dislike towards her.
3. It is possible that a person's dislike for Kylie Minogue could be related to their sexual orientation, including the possibility of them being gay and not realizing it.
Great insights - thanks for this

God Bless Great podcast
Forgot about the song Butterfly. The vibe of that song just screams gay pride parade to me. Haha. In the best way.
Love that song 😀
