X - classic Kylie or musical mis-step?

- Of all of Kylie’s albums from her long and storied career, few elicit as many strong opinions as 2007’s X. An album many believed tried to cover too much ground.
So what’s the truth behind the making of the album? Why exactly did it end up sounding so disjointed and confused? Who was offered ‘Like a Drug’ first? What was the inspiration for the song ‘Wow?’ How did Parlophone upset so many songwriters and producers whilst making the record? And how did Calvin Harris really feel about working with the diminutive diva for the first time?

And don’t forget to check out my last video looking at the biggest mistakes in music history • the BIGGEST mistakes i...
It's weird, even though it's not my favorite album as a whole, I play it most often. It's pop perfection. No skips. Ever.
Yeah I think I'm the same - I come back to it a lot in recent years
@@jonnyharvey living now in Ukraine is a disaster, but listening to X distracts from these atrocities. ThanX.
@@user-zr9ix2vp4l so good that’s power of art and music
I have never heard people call X a misstep - weirdest thing. To me it’s one of her most cohesive efforts and the main singles were massive in the media landscape of 2007/2008. It’s a gem.
I posed it as a questions in the title, to make it more interesting. I don't think it's a mis-step at all, which I say in the video
I love X but cohesive is the one thing it is not. The best representation of that is the final two tracks in the album. A tongue in cheek, ridiculous sex song (Nu-Di-Ty) followed by a song about the unfinished business that came to mind after her illness (Cosmic). Whose idea was it to have a song about mortality and pre-maturely leaving this world follow a song that has the lyrics "Do your own thing, with your own thing" and "just let it slip inside"? I love both songs but the the whiplash is crazy. X is half intimately personal and the other half escapist pop. It captures someone who has a lot to talk about but also wants to put it all behind her. It probably reflects where she was at the time.
Even sonically it's all over the place. Songs range from electro to glam rock to rnb to traditional pop ballads. I love Two Hearts but it has nothing in the album that sounds like it. It would've been a great final single, showing something different, but it doesn't represent the album well. The One would've been my pick for lead after In My Arms leaked. It's a ballad so it has an element of sadness but it's also very electronic and dancey like several other songs in the album.
Ultimately, what saves X from being a complete mess is that the material is really strong. It has a lot of variety and experimentation (for pop standards anyway) and so while it doesn't feel like a cohesive body of work, it's hard to get tired of it. Plus it produced what, I believe, is her best tour to date.
❤❤🎉🎉 18.13
Listen to the unreleased tracks and you'll realize how much better it could have been.
Like a drug & The One are both pure joy. So addictive to listen to over & over.
Aren’t they? Such great songs
Like a Drug might actually be my favourite Kylie song. Just sayn
no pun intended, right?
I was obsessed with the visuals of this album! So high fashion! I'm here while waiting for her new album TENSION! 💎
Yes the visuals featured a lot of avantgarde fashion which Lady Gaga made her thing a year later
One of her best albums. Sensitized, Like A Drug, Speakerphone, In My Arms, etc. Iconic songs that are in my top favorite Kylie tracks
It's actually become one of my favourite Kylie albums over the years.
It's the Kylie album I got introduced to when I was a kid, so despite it not being my fav album of hers, it always has a huge nostalgia factor to me. I feel that "In My Arms" & "Wow" are some of the best written pop songs from the 2000's.
I agree - top quality pop
One of the things I love about Kylie is that she has never been afraid to experiment and "go there", she'll serve a super commercial pop-dance record followed by something more experimental (or a series of experimental projects), and then return to a more commercial sound. I don't know any other artist who flows so seamlessly between personal experimental envelope pushing projects and pure radio friendly pop.
Goldfrapp do this
that's a really good point. She always tried to push her music forward, which keeps things interesting for everyone.
I've never clicked on something so quickly.
😀😀😀
Me too hehe.
I SECOND...THIRD...HELL FOURTH THAT EMOTION yo...that FREEMASONS VOCAL CLUB MIX should have WON SOME KIND OF AWARD yo.... 😊❤❤
I became a big fan during this era. I respect her decision to stay away from making deeply personal songs. It would’ve been predictable, and I imagine she didn’t want to go to that dark place in her life ever again
Yeah I get it - imagine having to get that emotional every night on stage.
Wow is such a banger tbh this could be my favourite album of Kylie’s, everything from 2007-2010 was amazing
X has really grown on me over the years - I really like it now.
This was such a great Era for Kylie. ❤
😃
I love Kylie and this album has a special place in my hearth!
I remember back them most people thought she was going to came back with a very emotional and deep album after her struggles with cancer. But she came back with this fun and energetic piece of work!
yeah it was understandable she just wanted to keep it light
Maybe it’s not so cohesive but, I enjoy it an example of how versatile she is, every single song is a gem, and the X Tour was incredible.
Thank you so much for making this video! X is hands down my favorite Kylie’s album, tour, and era. So futuristic, original, and eclectic. I do agree with you that In My Arms should’ve been the first single and it’s still my favorite Kylie’s song to date. I think the reason why some people couldn’t connect with the album is because it was her first body of work after cancer battle and a lot of folks expected sappy ballads and introspective songs, but Kylie didn’t feel like doing that, as you mentioned. I think I’m gonna rewatch the tour tonight for the 30th time after seeing your video 😂😂
😃😃😃 The X tour was exceptional - that raised stage!!!! It still looks so cool and it's 15 years old this year
In My Arms was massive in my home country. It went to #1 in Poland and that was how I discovered Kylie and then, of course, realised I already knew so many of her songs from the radio. Such a classic ❤️
it's a choon 😀😀
Honestly, X is my personal favourite album of hers. It has a special place in my heart and introduced me to the music as 10 years old child (with Sugababes and Rihanna)
😀 memories
I remember when “Two Hearts” music video was being released in Brazilian MTV. The vee-jay introduced it by saying Paul MacCartney had stated that Kylie was a strong woman and one of his favourites
I love X, it’s my favourite album of hers, it definitely worked in that time of music, it was fresh, fun and kept up with other artists
An absolute shame that Magnetic Electric never made it on to the original album - a standout song. Comes now as a bonus track, I believe. No skips here, X is a great album.
And King or Queens and Cherry Bomb! This era had so much great music.
Thank you for another Kylie history video!!
I don’t wanna sound demanding but it’d be really cool if you make a video for each album! I’m curious to learn more about each era
😃😃🙏I would like to do that. I'll see how they perform. I've started collecting info for Aphrodite now but I'll see how things go -P.S. you don't sound demanding 😃
This!! ❤
@@jonnyharvey a video on Impossible Princess would be very interesting if you could get enough info on it! Definitely her most experimental and misunderstood album to date I think🤞🏼
@@jonnyharveyyeah mate, I no u more doing early 2000s but Kiss Me Once and Disco would be great videos 💯👌😍🎤👑
I never understood why Kylie didn’t release an X2 album … there were so many amazing tracks from that era. I hope she does an unreleased and rarities album before I kick the dance floor ❤
Cause double album are harder to market & tend not to do as well commercially.
Fun fact: In My Arms was released as a duet with Taiwanese pop superstar Jolin Tsai in Asia. I still get happy when I think about it.
I think I read that & didn't include it in my script. And wasn't there another duet in Mexico?
@@jonnyharvey Yes, In My Arms feat Alex Syntek.
"X" is one of my favourite of Kylie's albums, when I first heard the lead single "2 hearts" I knew this album would be good. I love the image of her on the cover and on subsequent singles too. Some of her best singles came from this album and all the videos were also really visually stunning. I love that the album has an electronica element to it. I think its actually a really underrated album. The X tour was also visually really amazing too,the image of kylie atop a giant skull is a iconic moment. (matt)
Its a classic Kylie moment. A step forward for her too. She really took risks with this album she normally wouldn’t do. So I throughly appreciate that.
She always takes risks. She should’ve been commended more for it
X is a great album from start to finish… for me there are no skip tracks on it.
that's nice to hear 😃I never really listened to HBR or NMR not because I think they're bad songs, I just never connected with them. I actually love 'Cosmic'
I always love this album. A celebration of life, specially after such a trying time for her. Full of every emotion. I simply love it!!
Yeah it really grew on me over the years.
WE NEED TO HAVE A 90S DECACADE OF KYLIE ALBUM & SINGLE PICS... Come on you know it makes the most Sense 🎉
‘X’ is honestly my favourite of her albums. Every track is a vibe and although covering a wide spectrum, I think they all fit amazingly well together. I dance and sing to this album on a regular basis. And the tour was amazing - saw it in Manchester when she toured. Best live tour I’ve seen.
It was an awesome show - that raised stage, with the graphics appearing on it 🙌
I’ve always felt like Two Hearts was an album track and The one should’ve been the lead single.
The One has stood the test of time a lot better
@@jonnyharvey agreed 👍
In my case I love that album so much because of it, Kylie came for the very first time to Argentina with her Fabulous X World Tour just a month before Madonna. "The one", "In my arms" and "No more rain", my favourites. Warm hugs from Buenos Aires...!
that must have been so cool - Kylie live in Argentina. 😀😀
@@jonnyharvey Such an amazing Show, it was a cold november night, but Kylie was awesome. Is incredible how beautiful and sweet she is with her fans...!!!
Thank you for another fab video Jonny. I have such fond memories of this album and it’s release, including seeing Kylie for the first time live during the For You, For Me tour in NYC. Most of these songs sound fantastic today.
thank you 😃😃 Great it brings back so many good memories
In My Arms is a dance anthem!
Definitely a BANGER! Once in a while (despite album being released like 16 years ago) they play X's singles on the radios in Poland- most notably "The One" & "In My Arms". Actually, "The One" was played in the radio when I was driving a car yesterday and I was so happy cause lately I've been hyped on Kylie. I remember when I was during the summer 2015 on an open swimming pool and "In My Arms" was on. The song was so perfect for the occasion cause it brought those summer vibes exactly when I needed. I was so happy when I found out it was Kylie who was singing it. "All I See" I came across accidently 2 years ago on UA-cam and I fell in love with it. For now though, my favorite one from her is "Body Language".
It’s jammed with great songs
I have many cherished memories with X, especially my first Kylie concert and an album that accompanied me during the recovery of my liver transplant when I was 17 in 2008. That said, I'll forever mourn Lose Control. A lost treasure forever left in poor leaked quality.
Oh that's nice it brings back good memories. Hope you are doing better these days 😃
X holds a very special place in my heart... I have loved and listened to Kylie for many years, and the X tour was my first oportunity to see her live. I'm from Chile and X was the first and only tour she ever did in Latin America, so it's impossible for me to think of this album as a mis-step ahahah, I love it from beginning to end
Ohh, can't wait to watch the whole video! X is one of my favourite Kylie albums! Thanks so much, Jonny! :)
Hope you like it 😃😃
Here in the USA, we didn't get it til 2008 AND you had to pre-order it. It came with DVD interview you mentioned. "Stars" and "The One" are my faves!!! 😎❤️🥰
I love those two songs too 😀
I enjoyed the video, especially the songwriting stories. I also want to go to Denmark or Ibiza someday, cos all I currently say about my songs is "I was in love", 'I had the melody in my sleep' or "A dog barked 5 notes I made a song of it".
Thank you 😀😀
I randomly come back to the album. Not sure why, but it’s the “feel good” Kylie album for me.
Great video 👏 ❤
Love this video! Loooove X! Also love White Diamond I so want a studio version of the tour version 🥺
Thank you 😀😀
It gave us her best tour ever so can’t complain . Thanks to the tour it’s one of my most fave albums
Thanks for this video, this video is amazing, incredible material!
Even though I was introduced to Kylie through "can't get you out of my head" it was Wow where I became a really big fan, and bought X along with her other albums that were available at the time. Wow is still easily my favorite Kylie track to this day, thank you for this retrospective on X!
😀😀
The X tour, and the USA Tour during that era were possibly her best tours ever....
They really were excellent - I only watched X2008 a few years ago & I couldn't get over how good it was.
Great video! It’s not an album I revisit often but Wow and In My Arms are some of my fav Kylie songs. The album photoshoot is one her best imo. Still feels modern.
thank you - yeah the photos and artwork were so cool 😃
I think that either wow or in my arms should've been the lead single. Also I would've preferred if the album fully committed to the electro-pop vibes of the aforementioned songs
yes a lot of people have said that - there were enough tracks to do that.
Gr8 content as always!! The One and In My Arms ❤❤
Thank you 😀😀
i was 16 and i was going to school at 6:30am listening to speakerphone and it prevented me from EVER having depression. the record is iconic! nations cried when all i see was playing! it moved mountains of emotions! gonna give her more streams right now. and i loved the vid
All I see was a bad single choice. The only r'n'b song she could pull off was Red blooded woman. R'n'b is just not her thing. The album's sound itself is all over the place. Like a drug and Speakerphone should have been singles. Stars is also amazing. This was also the first time I saw her live, I absolutely loved the visuals for the tour and especially Like a drug performance. Thank you for the video.
Glad to see honesty in here. Kylie’s fans are extremely protective of her.
Oh the 'like a drug' performance where she came out on the skull was so cool.
Fantastic video as always Jonny 👍🏻🎵⭐
Thank you 😀
I tend to recreate the album by excluding a couple of the album tracks, replace them with some B-sides, and include some unreleased ones. I also rearrange them and start the album with the studio version of Speakerphone from her North American Tour.
It was a highly anticipated and needed album. In a sense it has everything. Pop perfection and meaningful lyrics to Kylie and fans. People said it wasn't cohesive, but I think it was diverse
Yeah what’s wrong with a bit of musical diversity on a album?
Absolutely brilliant album one of my favourites FANTASTIC
😀
Thanks for sharing this very entertaining video. I love X and WOW is one of my favorite Kylie songs. 🤩💖😎🎥
thank you 😃😃😃
The singles were incredible. No skips or filler whatsoever and the ballads are beautiful albeit heartbreaking. It was a great choice to make mostly fun and upbeat songs instead of wallowing in self-pity.
yeah I would've gone that route too. The ballads have really grown on me especially Cosmic.
Great video!
Thank you 😀🙏
Thank you! It all makes sense now. I love a lot of the songs on the album, but I always felt it was disjointed collection. Now I understand why. Too many cooks and too many changes in direction.
😀
Great. Look forward to watching this when I get home from work.
Hope you like it 😀😀
You are doing great job and I am genuinely in love with your presentations that are not being biased. Please can you make a video on Christina Aguilera Lotus and why it flopped? Love you from USA
X was my favorite album from her when I was a teenager. It holds a special place in my heart.
It's got great songs on there😃
X is one of my favourite Kylie albums so I find it funny when I hear criticisms about it or hear about the ups-and-downs of its production. Maybe it's that disjointedness you speak of or the fact that it's just a collection of great songs - maybe I just like that. It keeps you on your toes when listening to it.
It's also got two of my all time favourite Kylie songs in the form of Wow and 2 Hearts. So, yeah, in my opinion it's definitely not a mis-step. Love X.
Yeah I love it now too
Great review as usual! X was a great album, I guess it failed to make a big impact because of 2 Hearts as a leading single, everybody knows The One should've been the comeback single
thanks you 😀 Yes 'the one' has aged so much better
Another amazing video on an exciting Kylie era, thank you!
😃😃😃
I needed this video so much
😀😀😀🙏🙏🙏
"WOW" is a Barbie song to this day even when it came out I immediately thought of Barbie in a pink convertible blasting this song ha.ha.
yeah it does have a bright, bubblegum, fizzy sound 😀
Great upload, I personally love her very early songs...only later ones i like are slow and wow 👌🤗
Thank you 😀😀🙏🙏
@@jonnyharvey Thank YOU for making this great Kylie upload for us , have a great night Sonique 🙏🙏🤗
I believe in you got me into Kylie, but i had no idea who she was at the time. I dated someone who had a friend that showed me The Kylie Show and burned me a CD with some X leaks. Kylie's X era really cemented me as a fan.
Yeah I love that era now. 'I believe in you' was such a great song, classic Kylie IMHO. I thought there were going to be loads more hits with Jake Shears after that but it's hard to make magic every time.
King or Queen is such a banger (as are most of the songs on X), I wish it appeared on the main album rather than just as a bonus track/b side.
Thanks for this video, it is really well done :)
thank you 😀😀🙏
Thanks for making this video. Been a huge Kylie fan for the past 20 years. She's a unique pop artist, in the sense that while she's mainstream enough to be beloved by a wide audience, she also takes major risks with her image and sound, and tries to present something totally different in concept each time. I personally love the eccentric, eclectic vibe of X. I think it was clever that since she couldn't decide on a sound, they chose to make the imagery for the X era very surreal and abstract, Kylie went Gaga before Gaga. You've got classic bubble gum pop, r&b ballads, weird experimental trip hop (Nu-Di-Ty), and rock. One thing Kylie will never do is leave you bored with something bland/half-baked. Sometimes too many cooks in the kitchen pays off, it's a divisive album, but there's really something on it for everyone.
thanks for that - that's a really great assessment 😀 Definitely agree Gaga was influenced by the visuals. And at least Kylie keeps things interesting. She is never boring. She's such a brilliant pop star
A Deeper Cut: "Carried Away" (on the US/Mexican Special Edition) is one track from this recording session that I'll never understand why it wasn't included on the proper album. It's brilliant and classic Kylie. Could have been a huge single.
I think I've heard it before - will have to listen again
Pretty sure she would’ve smashed with In My Arms as the lead, it would’ve been perfect for her comeback and to launch a full electro/pop era.
Thank you so much yet again. I remember ‘The One’ being played in *every* club and bar I was in - a crime it wasn’t promoted more or given a first on second track release ❤
😀😀🙏🙏Agreed
I had always followed Kylie as much as a Mexican child in the 2000 could... X was the album that locked me in on her forever
Was she big in Mexico 😃? X was the album which made you a 'lover'
@@jonnyharvey She had a brief moment with her self titled but starting with CGYOOMH her singles were HUGE in Mexico and regarded as a new act for us (I know!). That said she was not really topping albums sales. In My Arms was pushed as leading single in Mexico and enough to merit her label commission a spanglish version featuring a (at the time) "beloved" mexican singer Alex Syntec for radio. I was buying her albums cause i wanted more of her music but X was her first i truly appreciated in full and during the roll out. Any deep cut before it I only appreciated years later... X was so edgy and I think it simply aligned with the times and what i was going through (said the 2007 introvert gay teenager listening to it locked in his room lol)
Another excellent video!!!
thank you
My opinion of X varies. The electro dance tunes were all bangers and hit materials, even many of the now leaked unreleased ones that should’ve replaced some of the other songs placed on the album would have had a successful chance of becoming hits for Kylie and would’ve helped make for a more cohesive album.
But instead we got a mix of then current pop rnb ala lesser Timbaland productions on tracks like heartbreak rock and oddities like Sensitized. Which not inherently are bad songs but not fitting for an album that could’ve been more compelling if it had stuck to the electro dance pop genre. I really like 2 Hearts, I know it’s not a fan favorite as you mention but i think it suits her well.
The overall aesthetics of the era in my opinion is one of her best, it’s strong and distinct. The album cover, the photos in the booklet + the tour costumes were top notch. She looked beautiful and even though she had been through cancer two years earlier to X there was a strength carried through the era with the blonde look.
In some ways she was a little bit ahead of what Gaga would go on to do when you look at the tour costumes, especially the extended extra US tour.
X overall is a mix bag, an album of great highs with the likes of the experimental Speakerphone, the dark clubby Like A Drug, the melancholy The One and the utter pure Kylie joyfulness that is In My Arms and Wow.
Did not know Like A Drug was offered to Britney first, definitely can see it be a track on Blackout.
I love All I See, very simple but it’s catchy and she sounds great on it. No More Rain is really pretty, Nudity is weird but fun.
Sadly Kylie would go on and repeat the missteps of X with Kiss Me Once. She hasn’t had a complete travesty album cycle, well some would say Impossible Princess and Body Language would qualify. But there is no outright offensively bad album in her catalog.
There clearly have been many attempts at appealing to the US pop audiences with the rnb genre throughout Kylie’s career. Presumably by her request but guess she never succeeds with it cuz it doesn’t come across authentic or maybe we’re just more comfortable with Kylie doing electro pop.
Nu-di-ty forever my favourite!
I think it was meant for Britney originally.
'X' is my favourite Kylie album, ever since I heard some of songs as performed on 'The Kylie Show' TV special' I was so excited! I remember getting the album and it's singles, and managing to see the X2008 Concert Live 3 times! xo
3 times - you must be a superman
@@jonnyharvey Aw nah hehe, I was a Student in Manchester at the time and I'd got one face value ticket myself for one night. Then closer to the concerts she did at then 'then' MEN Arena, I bought really cheap tix from eBay. I did this all the time with people selling tickets on eBay when they found they couldn't attend in the weeks before.
....Oh, this Kylie Album was INCREDIBLE! ...My FAVORITE, which I still play this day...I played it 2 days ago! ...ha-HAA! ...We tend to forget "X" was released during the US recession, Music Industry shakeup, & Lady Gaga's meteoric rise...but, it's "Nu Disco" vibe made TOTAL sense for the Album's lack of cohesion...some of my fave tracks, If I may.... Can you please do one on ‘Body Language’ if you haven’t already. It’s was said to be written with Prince but never happened, however it’s a very Prince sounding album.
yeah it was very Prince influenced. I will do Body Language at some point. It's the 20th anniversary this year.
"X" is one of my fav's...so so good!
I think so too
Cosmic and Stars are two of my absolute favorite Kylie Minogue songs.
Yeah I absolutely love Cosmic now
I knew it! I didn't research at all but when I first listened to Like a Drug and Speakerphone, they could be recorded by Brit or Madonna. I love Stars and Wow
Another fantastic video - so interesting and well researched! Love how consistently good you are at this!
Thank you so much 😀😀🙏🙏
I love that album, and it was also my first show i saw with her in live in Oslo, and it was amazing
X2008 was incredible
My favorite album by Kylie. ♥ Pure perfection
It is a great pop album - not the most cohesive sonically. But so many great songs.
Tnx for the educational video
😀
Fab video Jonny ❤
thank you 😃😃😃
All I See is so underrated. I love it ❤
I loved that song from the first listen
The visuals for this era were stunning
True
LOVED THIS ALBUM 🔥🙌🏾💽
*The One* is my absolute favorite!
I love that song
At it’s best moments, it includes some of her best dance electronic work. At it’s worst moments, it has a few skips.
Yeah the One, Wow, Speakerphone, In My Arms are classics.
I HAVE NEVER GASPED AND NEARLY BROKE MY SCREEN TAPPING ON A VIDEO THIS IS GONNA BE AMAZING
I hope it lived up to expectations!!
not releasing In My Arms as the lead was criminal! unfor. it leaked earlier and caused a rethink. One was the albums best track along with Like a Drug. I would have liked more emotional material on the album, but looks like Parlo twisted the album to be all over the place.
X is my favorite of all Kylie albums. I went on to see Kylie live in concert on her KylieX2008-Tour and it was one of my best concerts ever. I love and adore every single song of X. This Album in my JAM!
it's her best album and I said what I said! as a relatively new fan (I only started stanning her music this past January) this album truly encapsulates everything I've ever loved about aughts pop music. in addition to that, it feels like the lovechild of the aforementioned Blaclkout and Supernature. the lack of cohesion has also never bothered me, as it gives the album an instant greatest hits collection sort of feel. and from what I've heard from Tension so far, it feels like she's about to return to X vibes!
that's interesting to hear from a new fan. You have so much great music to discover 😀
@@jonnyharvey yeahhh well I do also love Fever and Body Language in particular! the only one I’ve listened to that hasn’t quite clicked for me yet is Impossible Princess 😣 but I’m gonna give it another go this coming week
I hope one day we get a special edition with the bonus tracks:
•Rippin' Up the Disco
•Magnetic Electric
•White Diamond
•King or Queen
•I Don't Know What It is
•Carried Away
•Cherry Bomb
•Do It Again
•BoomBox
And the demos
Yeah that would be great - maybe as an anniversary special
This album is clearly not one that could be considered "classic", but it does have its charms. What it lacks in cohesiveness, it more than makes up for in sonic variety and (hit or miss) experimentation. It contains some of her most adventurous-sounding tracks - Speakerphone, Nu-di-ty, In My Arms, 2 Hearts - territories she hasn't really revisited since then. Still, it is quite a fun listen. If Light Years, Fever, and Body Language are honey, X is aspartame.
Remember the day I bought the CD❤
Like a drug gave me goosebumps
In my arms is one of the best Kylie songs ever. Two Hearts was misunderstood i think
I have always loved X, that tour, those tracks. Wow is hands down one of the best Kylie tracks ever written
😀😀
This is the album that cemented me as a lifelong Kylie fan. It encapsulates Kylie as I know her in general. And 2 Hearts shouldn’t have been first Single.
But its ok, artists need to be free to do what they want to stay energized.
yes artists need to take risks and try new things
