  • Part 4 of Hebrew/African Black Soap. The recipe for this soap was one I got from you tube and was not the authentic way to make the soap, but it is still awesome!
    The next batch of Hebrew/African Black Soap I make will be the authentic way, by producing pot ash (lye) from the ashes that are made from the materials that are burned that go in the soap.

      But it's not Authentic African Black Soap. She even mentions in another comment, that it is not the Authentic Version, but it is just what she knew at the time. But it was very close. I've been looking around trying to find a true, authentic video on it. The ones that are authentic (that I've found so far), doesn't go into a whole lot of detail unfortunately. I would really love to learn how to make this traditionally.

      I thought that these ingredients are in authentic Black Soap. What ingredients are in real black soap?

    • @khione8044
      @khione8044 7 років тому +4

      +Jacqueline Affinito The ingredients are fine. But true/authentic Black African Soap doesn't use man-made lye. That's why I said it was very close though. Authentic Black African Soap uses the ashes to draw out the Potassium in it, to create a Potash. That Potash is similar to KOH (slightly different) and is used to saponify the soap (instead of using man-made lye). I'm just not sure how 1 determines how much potash to use, instead of using the lye. That's what I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out.

    Hi Sistah. Isn't the potash the source/ replacement for lye? Why do you need both potash and lye? I thought the burnt plantain, etc was what made black soap different from regular lye based. You even add the ash after? Why?

    From what I understand, adding the lye isn't necessary. Roasting the plantain into ash and adding the water is supposed to make potash which acts as a natural "lye". I've seen some videos of Africans making the soap outside over an open flame and they did not add lye...unfortunately nothing is in English so there r no measurements mentioned

    I'm confused. If you have natural lye, (plantain ash, banana ash, etc) why do you need Lye? I thought the ashes is a lye in itself. Does the African women use Lye? I thought they simply use the ashes as a lye?

    • @AhubahsLifestyle
      @AhubahsLifestyle  7 років тому +2

      Caribbean Queen You are right, the ashes were natural lye. At that time the reason I did it like that is because that's the wat I was shown, but I did say in one of the videos that the next time I make it I would do it the right way.

    doesnt superfatting makes the soap softer to the touch? - I tried superfatting and my soap never hardened completely.. I only used 1 ounce of castor oil on a 3 lb batch..so it wasn't even that much.

    Would you describe what you meant by "Cook" for the soap? Why is it important? Specially for 2hrs.
    Thank you

    • @AhubahsLifestyle
      @AhubahsLifestyle  8 років тому +1

      It is important to cook the soap for to hours to cure it by removing the lye from it. If you don't cook it, you have to let it air cure anywhere from four to six weeks. I hope this answers your question.

    • @epiccoconut5995
      @epiccoconut5995 8 років тому

      Set Apart Living okay. What is "Air curing"?

    • @AhubahsLifestyle
      @AhubahsLifestyle  8 років тому

      Air curing is letting the soap sit somewhere uncovered and air cure. As time goes on the lye in the soap dissipates. The soap can't be used until all the lye cured our of it.

    • @epiccoconut5995
      @epiccoconut5995 8 років тому

      Set Apart Living Yes ma'am! Thank you very much for clarifying that.

    • @khione8044
      @khione8044 7 років тому +1

      +Set Apart Living I don't mean to be rude, but I just wanted to clarify what you said about the Cooking your Soap vs Air Curing. It is a very common misconception that cooking the soap means that it doesn't require a cure time. While this is somewhat true, it will be a better bar of soap if given a full cure. Curing does not refer to the amount of time that there is no more lye. Even in Cold Process Soap Making (without cooking) lye is neutralized, and there is no more lye remaining after 24-48 hours. Cooking the soap, forces the Saponification and the Gel Stage, to neutralize the lye faster, and making it safer to use sooner. The "curing" refers to how long it takes for all of the water to evaporate out of the soap. Cooking the soap speeds up this process, but there will still be traces of water left that still needs to evaporate after it has been molded and cut. Weighing at least 1 bar of soap out of each batch of soap made, will help in determining when your soap has finished curing. (Once it stops losing weight, is when all the water has been evaporated out)

  • @surfwithme101

    you dont need lye because the burn plantain contains a natural occurring lye that forms during the burning process.
    this is not a pure natural black soap you made.
    this is not how we do it in Nigeria.
    without lye, it will still lather.
