  • IF you feel confused what colour african black soap should be to be authentic. ABS can be grey, ash, pitch black or any shade of black. I make black soap to look any of these colours using the same potash we use in Ghana to make the popular caramel ABS the world makes.
I explain why authentic black soap can be black, brown or grey.
This video is the intro of the course How To Make African Black Soap on Ghana Soap School.com created for students on the course explaining how to do the video course on the website.
It is not a full in depth video on the subject.
Are you an avid fan of African black soap but find the contrasting information about ABS confusing at times? African black soap belongs to a group of natural soaps that are made with potash.
What sets it apart is that it is made with organic or botanical potash.
People make a bastardise version with caustic soda, but true black soaps are always saponified with potash.
The colour of black soap varies from place to place, this is due to the source of potash and if the oils you use are darker or light. With regards to potash, anything from camwood, cocoa potash, plantain, shea kernel to bamboo ash can be used to saponify oils to make black soaps.

Excellent information. I LOVE African black soap and am learning all I can about the roots of the product. Thank you so much for sharing. As a soap maker myself, I have to shake my head at the 'add water to soap' version of bodywash. I'm saving up for your book...I do have lots of bamboo and plantains (ideas for making potash myself). My African inspired bars are the best soap I've made in 30 years and they aren't even actual black soap (only the embeds were made by Ghana soapmakers). I have so much to learn from soapmakers like yourself.

Hello sistar!!! Thank you for the video and educating us on the various characteristics of black soap. I have been interested in learning how to make "authentic" black soap and just as you clearly stated lol the authenticity is determined by the region and potash versus caustic lye. I will review your website to get more information on your soap making course. Thank you again for your informative video and soaping passion!!!

I wouldn't want additives in my soap. I just want pure black soap in whatever fashion as doesn't need to be like commercial shampoo or body wash like dove or something like that. Dont need perfume in it either. Give to me as is*

Audio cutting out & very difficult to hear sounds like an echo. The dirty QTips on your shelf right next to you were quite quite repulsive and distracting. Consider cleaning 🧹 up before filming in your apartment next time. I did like the side by side comparison of soaps.

ok @divine health and love. For your information, the Qtip, I used to wipe the glass bowl the black soap is in so it looked clean on camera. So don’t be repulsed.
