    This video serves as proof that synthetic chemicals are not needed to make soap. African Black soap is made with a natural/organic base and natural oils. THAT'S ALL, no synthetic fragrances, thickeners, dyes etc.

    Lye is required to make soap. The reason your mixture becomes soap, is because by mixing the potash with water, then simmering/smoking it down like that, you are literally creating lye. Specifically, yours is a form of lye called Potassium Hydroxide. Technically, you could just skip all the boiling, scraping and toxic smoky fumes and just buy some potassium hydroxide.
    There are 2 kinds of lye-- potassium hydroxide (mostly used to make liquid soaps, like the kind in a hand pump, which is why your soap comes out soft and sticky), and sodium hydroxide, which makes the hard, smooth bars of soap. Both are natural, and made from ashes and salt.
    Before you go making lye, or using it-- know that it can be pretty dangerous while it is hot and fuming. It can burn your skin, lungs and eyes. While working with lye, wear rubber gloves, a mask, glasses/goggles and work either outside, or an open, very well ventilated area. Notice when you see videos of African people making this soap, they do it outside-- for good reason.
    Now... Soap making is an exact science. There is no room for miscalculation. Lye has a very specific amount of water and oil it must be emulsified very thuroughly with, in order to properly undergo the soaponification process.
    If you dont get your measurements right, and if you dont emulsify the water,, oils and lye properly-- you could make a soap that is too lye heavy, and unsafe to use. When a soap is too lye heavy, it will burn or irritate your skin.
    By the way, that is something that concerns me when I watch these videos about people who use African black soap-- many say that it irritates the skin... Again, that is a strong sign that a soap is too lye heavy! Wherever they bought it from, perhaps it was made by someone who was not well versed in lye/water/oil ratios.
    This problem can actually be remedied by using the proper amounts of water and oils/butters.
    Its not that other African soaps are "fake" per se... ALL soaps are a combination of lye, water and oils/butters. But perhaps other soap makers used a different lye to make the bar harder. You can still add all the same other ingredients though.
    Making soap is fun and it is an art form. But safety first!

    Another way that some make black soap in West Africa is to use ashes of palm leaves, cocoa pods, etc instead of the mineral. These ashes contain the same compounds as potash and are actually called potash. The term potash refers to multiple different things that all contain potassium salts which give it the soap-making property.

      Palm kernel is very good for your skin, especially due to the pH. It helps neutralize the soap. Eggs are high in protein, and skin is also primarily protein, so it feeds it. Charcoal is also very good for your skin, I've seen it used in many high end products but haven't researched it myself.

      Kee Kee As a soapmaker myself, I am skeptical as to whether you can make any type of soap without the use of KOH or NaOH.
      Do you use ashes? If so, technically you're using a very unrefined and unpredictable form of NaOH.
      When soap is made properly, there is no NaOH left in the product at all, since the Oils and the caustic agent form a chemical reaction that results in soap. It ceases to be oil and caustic agent and is converted into a new compound aka soap.

    If you want fragrance add a few drops of an essential oil like Lavender into the mixture when cool and mix well to distribute it through the soap. Or, you can also add a drop or two of Tea Tree oil to add antibacterial and antifungal properties too. With essential oils, you have another tool in your arsenal. However, be sparing with them as some are powerful ingredients. If you are making small quantities of soap like this a drop or two should be sufficient. However, could you please pin a recipe with quantities of the ingredients for those who want to do this? It would help those unfamiliar with the process?

    Mined potash is in fact a chemical that humans or animals should not in gest or inhale. But tomatoes love it! It is great plantfertilizer. Banana peels contain a lot of potassium. I use a concoction made from old banana peels to water my tomatoplants.

    I noticed in ingredients list for some soap from Ghana that plantain ash was used…in my mind it would be like using wood ash as a base for lye soap. Does the potash replace plantain ash in traditional soap? Could one use fireplace ash or even burn plantain peels in outside oven? Curious about this and just beginning making my own soap. Ty for sharing with us.

    Why can't I use the same pot for cooking?
    Can I use other oils like red oil, jojoba, castor oil?
    Can I add other ingredients like vitamin E, aloe vera and tumeric?
    Is the steam or smoke from this process toxic to skin, eyes, or lungs?

    GreenBeauty, I have a question for you or for a viewer that can give me answer.
    My wife and I went to a store at the local mall. It was called the "Oil bar". We went to see if they had anything for soapmakers and I wanted to compare their soap with what I make. I bought a bar of their African black soap (you can google oil bar to see what I am talking about). Now, the argument of whether its real or not doesn't concern me. The only thing I look at is whether its real soap and how effective is it to your skin. If that passes the smell test then its real soap.
    Their African black soap (and I suspect others like it) is really just as good as what I make with one exception maybe two. The smell and the amount of activated charcoal used (which is good for complexion).
    It has this fresh smell that is not a synthetic fragrance and I would really like to know what it is. I don't know if it has to do with these little brown hard things in the soap? And, I really admired how shiny, solid black thru and thru the soap is.
    That was my question but I have one more thing to say.
    African black soap is not the tell all be all of soap. The only reason it can be good for complexion and hair is because it is real soap!
    Real soap does not have detergent in it to cheapen the soap. Detergent molecules do not clean the same way soap molecules clean especially when it comes to the skin. Mold and germs never grow on real soap but it will on detergent based soap. A bar of Ivory soap will turn black within 6 months. This is the same stuff that is not gotten off of your body by using detergent based soap.
    The moral of the story is if you find yourself a good soap maker, keep him (like me). Your skin will thank you for it and a whole new world will open up that you didn't know existed.

    Potash is mined worldwide and is available in all 50 states.
    It's also almost the same as potassium hydroxide ( caustic soda) depending on what market you're selling to is what you should base your choice on if you're trying to decide on caustic soda or potash.
    The customer who prefers "all natural " products will see potash on the label and not typically know its nearly the same as caustic soda. This will likely contribute to their choice of this product because of the cukt mentality behind specialized markets and someone who prefers western or European ingredients will be familiar with caustic soda because it's used widely in that market.
    Price wise it's difficult to say which would be a better choice for the producer. Caustic soda is likely more consecrated due to it being lab made to a standard so you would probably see lower cost of production tmwith it but on the other hand with potash the health market has trained their consumer base to be used to higher prices and you made be able to make up the difference there by creating a specialized product for a specialized customer

    So what do you think of people adding aloe juice to acidify the PH to use it as a shampoo. Soap are supposed to be basique so does altering the PH also alters its properties? Thanks

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor 7 років тому +3

      HereDianna2 You can test the alkalinity or acidity of an ingredient by using pH test paper which changes colour according to its alkalinity or acidity. It comes with a chart that will allow you to judge. ”Anything between 0 and 6.9 is acidic, 7 is neutral, and anything between 7.1 and 14 is alkaline. Human hair and scalp oil sebum, has a pH balance of between 4.5 and 5.5. This natural hair acidity prevents fungi and bacteria in the hair and scalp, and keeps the cuticle closed and healthy." Human skin has a pH of 5.5. (This why many people use Apple Cider Vinegar as a final conditioning and clarifying hair rinse.) As for the pH value of aloes, it is likely to be around the neutral to alkaline, as the Aloe Vera plant is 99% water. But if you get the pH strips, you'll be able to tweak your soap and shampoo recipes for your specific needs.

    • @heredianna2496
      @heredianna2496 7 років тому +5

      BigHenFor Thanks :-) but actually I already knew all that and aloe Vera juice has indeed a PH of 4.5-5. It is written on the bottle and I have already tested it. I have those PH strips. I have been using it for years as well as many naturals for that reason thanks to "kimmaytube" who made a video about it and PH levels years ago. I find apple cider vinegar drying for my hair so I always use aloe... My question was VERY specific I know but I always wondered that and think that she might have an answer... A soap has to be alkaline/basic to be a soap. So how do the properties of the black soap get alteredi if as many naturals we change the PH to match our hair PH as many naturals do. I have never done it myself but we can't even call it a soap at this point...

      @@thefinelife2247 hi, if I use black soap as shampoo do I need apple cider vinegar?

    • @thefinelife2247
      @thefinelife2247 5 років тому

      @@patb2582 Hello, for any soap used on hair as a shampoo, you will need an acidic remedy similar to the pH of our hair to restore it to normal. ACV has a pH of 2-3, while our hair has a pH of 4.5-5.5. Though the numbers look close, pH operates on a logarithmic scale, which means the power increases 10 times for every 1 number change in pH. Basically, ACV undiluted (assuming hair was pH 5) has a strength of 1000, which will destroy hair cuticles if undiluted. If you wish to use ACV as the acidic remedy, you MUST dilute it HEAVILY with water. 1 cup ACV to 3 cups water will NOT do (as I've seen many youtubers promote; this is highly dangerous if used frequently). A safer dilution would be 1 teaspoon ACV to 1 cup water, increase the ratio to your liking. This dilution yields a pH of 4, which is much safer to your hair strands. Aloe vera, another popular acidic remedy, can be used undiluted, as it has a pH of 5, which is within the range of your hair's pH. I hope I've answered your question :).

    Black soap is not solid or uniformly black. Most of the brands makes so many of fake black soap and put in some of hars chemicals inside of it which makes it not even raw at all. A black soap a smell to it as well, and it is not not black it is more like brown or light. However, a black soap is not smooth.
