Mega Man & Bass is Almost a Good Game | RETROspective

  • We might be at the beginning of June, but let's finally bring Mega May 2021 to a close!
Mega Man & Bass was originally released on the SNES exclusively in Japan in 1998, and then later on the Game Boy Advance - with that later version even eventually being ported to the Wii U! But this odd Mega Man title is one that Capcom often seems to have forgotten and that Mega Man fans, on the whole, seem to be evenly split between loving or hating.
And, as for me here at Stuff We Play, despite owning the GBA version as a kid, my thoughts are complicated.
So, today on RETROspective, let's dive in deep on the good and bad of Mega Man & Bass as I go over why I find it to be an ALMOST good game.

I think that this game is better with Mega Man than Bass. The level design is mostly fine, and aside from King Jet and Burner Man, the bosses are fine. Meanwhile, Bass breaks the level design and the bosses are a war of attrition without their weakness, forcing you to be less experimental with the great weapon selection. That's just my take though.

Great video! When I visited MM&B on my Megaman marathon I thought the game was really fun and I'd consider it my 3rd favorite in the classic series.
I can't fully agree on the level design/balancing quip cause I think the game for the most part compliments both characters well enough. It ain't perfect but both characters have tradeoffs to consider: Megaman takes out foes quicker but requires more precise platforming in levels. Bass breezes through levels with his double jump & dash but takes a bit longer to defeat foes. And even then the shop has an upgrade to make Bass Buster stronger.
I strongly agree with King Stage 2 overstaying its welcome and I admittedly used save states on it haha. That level is definitely a chore.

God I really wish they included Megaman and Bass in Legacy Collection 2. It's far from the best game in the classic series, but it deserves to be preserved too.
I hope Capcom makes a Legacy Collection 3 including Megaman and Bass, the gameboy titles, and other weird spinoffs so that more people can access them

It's definitely not the most beginner friendly, 6 and 11 on the other hand I recommend for most beginner friendly. But if you ask me, MM&B gets better each time. I'd say it's not only become a near perfect game, but also my favorite entry and 3rd favorite SNES game.
One tip I have for playing as Mega Man when at the King Jet is to use the Flame Wave.
I'd rank the classic series as...
    Bass > 6 > 4 > 11 > PU > 5 > 8 > 7 > 9 > 3 > 2 >> 1 >>> 10

Rockman and Forte has the best final stage in any Megaman game. I loved that they made the boss gauntlet a longer level type with the boss fights sprinkled throughout the stage and it all ends with a 2part fight with Wily!

While I'll admit King Stage 2 well overstays its welcome, I never actually got a game over on it as either Mega Man or Bass because of how easy it is to find lives in this game. Typically they're put just before a difficult section or you can just simply buy them, they're as cheap as ever in this game specifically compared to the other games with a shop system. Then again you could say the same thing about X6 and its permanent checkpoints but at least King Stage 2 isn't hard-locking me in the stage for picking the wrong armor following a long ass difficult boss fight *cough*
As for King Jet, pretty much all of his most devastating attacks can be cancelled with special weapons, like the big laser beam can be stopped by throwing a remote mine at the cannon (if you're worried about destroying it in time, don't be. He spends just enough time charging it for you to get the mine on there), and you can cancel the fist attack with the lightning bolt and/or wave burner, but for Mega Man specifically I recommend using the lightning bolt because his version of the fight has enough platforms for you to land on after using it

MegaMan and Bass isn’t a bad game. But i’d be lying if i said it was a good one. I personally really didn’t have much of a good time with it. I will say that there are highlights to it. The shop system is neat, and probably the best shop in the series, the music was PHENOMENAL, the sprites and presentation is immaculate, and Bass is playable, but it’s the level design that threw me off so hard. Wether it’s starting an invisible block chain over insta-death spikes, or some of the bosses being crapily designed, to the ENTIRETY of King stage 2, no matter if you play as MegaMan or Bass, it’s not gonna be enjoyable. Some might think differently, and that’s fine, the entire game isn’t bad (i’m exaggerating a bit here.). But personally, i’m not a fan of this one.
    Great review though sir

5:38 the system while limiting your stage options also completely assures you'll have say, the ice wall to use in the trial and error parts of burner mans stage with the invisible holes. I'm assuming thats the intent but given you dont get energy back after dying I'm not a fan, id just have the standard 8 format instead. Shame too, the weapons in this game are easily in a top three spot for classic series weapon sets besides 9 and 11.
I'm not a big fan of the ost myself (being a snes technical feat aside) but the boss theme is one of my favorites for sure.
I never liked the level design even if I dont take the bs into account, they never felt like they progressed enough or had the flow the best levels of 9 did, like they just kinda had whatever placements
    Neat review, good job.

Thank you tons and tons! As for recommendations to get into the series, I think the Mega Man Legacy Collection is the best bet if you're wanting to try the classic games. It's only $15 (when not on sale!!!) and has all 6 NES games on it.
As for the best of those NES games to start with - MM6 is usually the one I recommend! Though, if you don't mind starting with something a little different, I'd also highly recommend Mega Man 8 as a starting point if you can get your hands on it :)

I know there is a load of hate towards Mega Man and Bass, but i seem to enjoy it. The bosses are original (other then Tengu man and Astro man), and sure its difficulty spike is pretty high. But still, its a good game and its better on the SNES then the GBA in my opinion. I love the soundtrack and its like Mega Man 8 for the SNES for me. But its original too.

  • @dwschiu

I loved this game a lot, but I finished it only with Megaman. I didn't have the guts to finish with Bass. And, yes, the King 2 stage is Hell on Earth. I had to use the emulator's save state feature to finish the stage with Megaman (I know, not something to be proud of). It took me a shitload of time to kill the first tank boss, basically because the Remote Bomb stock wasn't enough to kill it and had to shoot each weak point with Mega Buster after the Remote Bombs were gone. It's so time-consuming doing this with Megaman, especially that I refilled my health during this battle, so I could go on with the next one. The flying tank boss is a nightmare, but not so time-consuming as the first one. I managed to kill it with Spread Drill. I don't remember the battle against King to be that difficult, even after he merges with the tank. But, anyway, this game is really good and challenging. It also has that Megaman 8 feeling (because of the visuals) for those who could not afford to get a Sega Saturn or a Playstation at the time.

So I didn't know this was considered one of the harder Megaman titles till recently. I used to play this on my GBA a lot as a kid and completed it. beat it with both characters and got all the CDs. Took me a long time to do it, lots of trial and error and doing things over and over. but I still managed to do it as a pre-teen, or early teenager.

Personally I don't have a problem with bass having a harder time with bosses as that's what balances him and megaman out, on breezes through stages but struggles with bosses, while the other has to platform normally while demolishing bosses, if one had an easy time with both then that would just lead to one being virtually pointless.

Totally fair - though, if you'd want to give 7 or 8 another go, the fanmade Rockman 7 and 8 FC fangames put them into an NES style, and feel borderline official to me!

  • @Evilriku13

So something u perhaps didnt know, and that is how to make Mega Man & Bass King Stage 2 easier, is to use the Lightning Storm/Dynamo Man weapon on the flying tank boss, cuz A it does an AoE attack and B it does destroy the flying hands coming at you AND u stay in the air if you decide to use it there thus u gaining extra distance while the autoscroller does its thing. It's something another reviewer mentioned and that lets me wondering if the game is more built about using weapons during regular stages like "classic Mega Man 1" was. Cuz some enemy placement can be smartened out that way if you use the drill weapon for example.

Unfortunately this game was kind of doomed at the start. A game coming out for the SNES in 98 is not a good sign keeping in mind the N64 was already out having already done Mario 64. Classic Mega Man was not very popular at the time. Coming out after X4 is really tough plus the franchise had significant quality drop after X4. The similarity to Mega Man 8 didn't help also I've played a lot of Mega Man but I don't think I've heard about this game
