- Did you know there was a trilogy of Mega Man games for MS-DOS? Yup! And the original Mega Man for DOS was essentially just an officially licensed fan game created by one guy, and it's kind of terrible. And then there were two other games: Mega Man 3 and Mega Man X for MS-DOS. So, today on Stuff We Play, let's take a look at The Weird and Terrible Mega Man DOS Games!

I always find PC renditions of console games from the 8 and 16-bit era fascinating, but thankfully I didn't succumb to getting this when I was younger. It is cool that the dev got it made though, even if it's not good. Great video as always!

Thank you! An absolutely, even if the game isn't good, the fact that he got his passion project published by Capcom is still admirable!
However, when you’re a 5-year-old boy living in a house with no consoles and only a handful of PC games, Mega Man 3 DOS is freaking amazing. I played that so much as a kid in the early 90’s. I didn’t care about the lack of story or music because I had nothing to compare it to. I didn’t mind taking my time figuring out how to approach a tough jump or how to defeat a trickily-placed enemy. I remember usually fighting Torch Man first and Bit Man last because his stage was hardest for me. I think I only ever beat the whole game once or twice. It’s still the only Mega Man game I’ve ever played, but I have no regrets. (and Bit Man will forever be my nemesis)

I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it!
Back in '95, my Brother at I stopped at a Comp USA while on vacation, and stumbled across the PC version of Megaman X. If my memory serves, though, it came with a huuuuuge box that included a weird knock-off SEGA Genesis controller (all grey, and 6 buttons.) He might still even have that controller, but I'm unsure. It'd be pretty wrecked by now. I was surprised to see you could get it without those things! D:
I actually saw a few box art pictures of that version of the game! According to the full big box, that Capcom PC pad was a whole $15 value...
Which, actually, isn't half bad for a Capcom-branded controller!

I knew a lot about the Mega Man DOS games, but the MMX1 PC port hasn't really been discussed much, so this was a fun watch indeed. Surprised how close it was to the SNES original, I just assumed it was a ROM Copy like X3 PC copying the PSOne port, but it's indeed a port made from the ground up. I wouldn't mind seeing the other weird Mega Man PC ports looked at too, if that's a thing you decide to get back to (Mega Man Legends 1 and X3 were both PC ported and I hear the L1 port has some odd differences from the PSone game, but I'm not sure what those are outside of just being a clunkier version to play)
Perhaps some time I'll disciss other odd Retro PC games in the future. Super Mario Bros. Special, perhaps?

the Dos mega man x was actually a remake not a port, The guy who made the first two dos mega man games was tasked with putting mega man x on the pc but this time with help from Capcom. They reused all the assets from mega man x but had to remake the game.
Wouldn’t it run and look better if you played it on the newest PC’s back then?
I was playing it mostly on the best settings, except for some scattered clips from when I tested out CGA mode

Mega Man 3 DOS has better swimming mechanics than Mega Man 8. That's just sad.

It does, but it's extremely floaty and letting go of the D-Pad doesn't halt your momentum, resulting in a few cheap hits if you don't have the hang of it, and feeling imprecise overall. I take the stiff and clunky feeling instead.
Hmmm, even though I've been playing on PC since the 90s, I don't remember playing many very bad ones, to be honest. I think I was just very lucky. But I prefer to focus on the best ones I've ever played, and while some are very famously good (like Age of Empires II), I try to celebrate the lesser known gems, like Microsoft Studio's FREELANCER.
Fair points! On my end, some of my most dreadful PC gamimg experiences came from trying to run popular new titles on ageing hardware haha
I felt bad for the kids who just heard of Mega Man but didn't have a console so they got the DOS versions of 1 and 3 instead(tho the X version of DOS is a solid port of the SNES version except for the absence of the Ride Armours and not really as good but still good music so I don't feel bad for the Kids who just heard of Mega Man but doesn't have a console so they bought X for DOS)
Things i noticed in MMX for DOS that you haven't mentioned:
-The screen resolution is actually wider and could be even called "true widescreen"
-Sigma Palace in the ending looks completely different, plus different palettes in the ending.
-Different effects? Maybe? Like when the rocks fall on 22:15
Aside from that, great review! By the way, i've seen someone make a mod that fixes MMX DOS's soundtrack, but i couldn't get it to work on DOSBox.

Tbh, it’s sad how both Mega Man DOS and its sequel were handled. Maybe one day we could see a full-fledge fan game that does a whole lot more with these two games
after watching this video before commenting, I decided to watch a game play of it on a channel called "World-of-Longplays". I couldn't get through 3 of the 14 minutes. I had to shut the video off. YIKES

actually, you can get the hadouken in mega man x dos. it uses the snes tactic and actually makes it easier by making you not die tons of times. keep in mind you need to reach the secret area with all upgrades, all heart tanks, all sub tanks, and full health.
How odd. I wonder if there was something wonky going on with my copy, as the SNES tactic just did not work for me for some reason!

Yes, weird and horrible but have you seen the story behind this game? It was pretty much the first fan made game that was published. The man who made it had just him and his brother. He wrote the code from the ground up in his spare time. It might be bad and weird, but you gotta give the guy credit. He's the first fan made game to get published and gave people a way to sorta play it if they didn't have a Nintendo. This was made on an Apple II !!!!
commander keen used pc speaker and that was also 1990. iD software considered it innovative at the time and originally made it as a mario game they though would stun nintendo for PC market. As a dos game these are not bad at all for their timeframes
Wow, this version looks way worse than Mega Man for the Game Gear. At least that one had content for being on a smaller-scale console.
Mega Man Game Gear is actually pretty decent! My biggest issue with that one is the insane price!
I have tried it myself and it isn't bad compared to those two atrocities.

was only way i had to play mega man x in 95 was very happy with it. i did not know it was a console game til years later
It might just be your DOSBox settings but the MMX PC version looks awful. It's like they tried to hide the fact that it can barely hit 20FPS by just running the game at double speed.

The mega man 3 box has the same image of mega man as the game boy box which is the same as the dos version box. Did anyone notice?

As someone who actually likes these games, I guess I can see where you're coming from. It isn't as good as the nes games, and unless you're someone like me who enjoys stuff that is generally considered to be terrible, it isn't really worth giving it more thought than it's worth. Though I should really play that Mega Man X port sometime, I haven't played the X series in a while.

worst PC port i ever played? easy Megaman X7 and RE4 for PC, its so bad that at one point Zero's ponytail always glitched out at the very begining of his stages and it refused to even load properly, several stages crashed on me and the PC that i had at that time was quite beefy to play Doom 3 on decent settings.
As for RE4 i never got that to work properly the first time i brought it, it always crashed right after the first cutscene rendering the game unplayable, i do remember getting a 100% save file to circunvent this issue so i could replay the first part after the cutscene and save it but since RE4 doesnt allows you to do that i had to play the end boss and even that worked like ass, never touched the PC port ever again since how busted was at launch, and i had recently at that time brought the DMC3 PC port and that worked just fine (it isnt the best one by far but still pretty decent if you didnt had a PS2)

Agree to disagree about MM on DOS being the worst game ever. Sonic 06 is delicious top cringe, but as mediocre as the MM DOS game is: it isn't developed by a big company with a large budget and lots of wasted talent! Not to say that Rozner is kinda free of sin, but him working mostly alone and being an upstart programmer at that time was probably pretty hard.
I knew mm1 was awful but i still enjoyed playing it when i was 12 or whatever, 😄.

BTW I made a Mega Man MOD of one very cool new homebrew DOS game in Text mode called MagiDuck with a help from the games author :) the target PC is 8088 with 256KB ram and CGA :) take a look :) so I took the graphics form the mega man 1 for NES and reduce the resolution to fit in the graphics limitations :)
