For a game of this era, it feels like the devs were trying to genuinely make fun levels and pave the way for what would be considered good design later. They didn’t get there completely, but I think you can do a lot worse when it comes to early NES games. Like Ghosts n’ Goblins, which I typically refer to as “RNG: The Game”.
@@cubedmelons876 I agree. It reminds me of the original Adventure Island in that way too, in that there clearly was a lot of love and thought put into specific levels - even with the repeating layouts - but the difficulty and design decisions probably make it impenetrable to many new players compared to the sequels.
Even compared to modern games, classic Megaman are awesome. The only dated thing about them is their graphics (and Megaman 1 as a whole, but it was the first game so give it a break).
The thing with the NA Megaman box art is that the artist was both given very little time & was told next to nothing about how Megaman looks, so they just kinda took a guess at what he'd look like
Despite being a massiven fan of the Battle Network games, I have a limited experience with the standard games, aside from Megaman X 1, so this is really cool to see.
Mega man 1 is one of those games where if you know how it works you can absolutely destroy the game with barely any trouble but that first playthrough is always extremely frustrating.
@@Apotheosister They have varying degrees of leniency. The X series also tends to be slightly more lenient, but that's just because X has a little more mobility options than Mega Man has.
The thing about the points system being in Mega Man 1 but not any of the other Mega Man games is that, it's most likely a holdover from arcade games. Capcom had pretty much exclusively made games for arcades, and Mega Man was actually their first game specifically made for a home console. I will say, at least for the NES games, it took them a while to correct some of the issues in Mega Man 1, like the spike in difficulty towards the end, or one weapon being way better than the rest. This was an incredible review. As a huge fan of Mega Man, I can’t wait to see your opinion on the rest of the classic series. Especially the last two game boy games. They’re underrated in my opinion.
This is so crazy I literally started to do the same thing and bought the legacy collection so that I could try them out for the first time. I only finished the first two so far and I can definitely see how good they are for their time can wait to see how they're improved as I go on to the series.
To explain the horrifying behavior of the Footholder robots, how they're programmed is that their physical hitbox is a tad shorter then their sprite, by like, 3 pixels, and an invisible platform is attached to the top that follows them, using the same behavior as the Magbeam, what happens is that when they move up, because the platform follows them, rather then being part of their existence, it lags behind a tiny bit and causes you to clip the enemy and flinch through them Another funky behavior as such is that the game treats MegaMan standing on the Magbeam as "airborne" for aerial momentum calcs, which is why when you step off it, MegaMan tends to fall disturbingly fast if you didn't jump, the game has been seeing him as airborne and building momentum the entire time you walked across the beam(or stood on the footholder)

I feel like Pikasprey would absolutely LOVE the Battle Network series. I remember hearing somewhere that the devs tried to capitalize on the popularity of both Pokemon and Yugioh, and created the battle system for the BN games from the mindset of collecting and customizing. Easily my favorite Megaman series. Hopefully we get a collection announced soon.
The amount of time and attention put in your videos show how much care you put into them. I don't care if it takes months or even a year, but I hope you put the same amount of effort in not only the Megaman series, but to all your videos in general.
RE: the footholders, the situation gets worse when you consider that if ANYTHING hits you while you are on the foot holders, you will fall THROUGH them during you invincibility frames (which can be EXTREMELY obnoxious :) )
Watching the Megaman 11 stream I did think it'd be nice for a Megaman series episode and you sure delivered! Watching another Canadian UA-camr do Megaman sure takes me back!
Mega Man 1 is a very solid game. As a first start, it's got a lot of rough patches. Definitely a series that tripped out of the starting gate, but would catch up as the series went on. Welcome to the fanbase, Pikasprey
It’s great to hear a new fan’s perspective! Nice video and dive into this classic. My love for the Blue Bomber started the weekend MegaMan 2 was released and I rented it at the video store. I’m looking forward to checking out the next videos. Thanks!
Glad to have you onboard. Hope you enjoy your stay. 19:03 Personally, I prefer the bosses being spread out throughout the final stages, rather than the typical capsule boss rush. Fun fact, the first entry of the main Megaman series (MM1, X1, and Zero 1) all do this, before doing the capsule thing, with one exception being Megaman & Bass, which also spreads them out.
From what I can tell, Mega Man 1 was developed on different hardware compared to the other five NES games (because Nintendo actually slowly upgraded their cartridges over time, that much I know for certain). The result is, the devs had FAR less ROM and were making the game on a completely different engine. Mega Man 2 didn't just tweak a lot of series conventions (8 bosses instead of six, no more enemies in the antechamber, etc.) it also sanded down the rough edges on a moment-to-moment game engine level too
I've never been that familiar with Mega Man and I generally just don't play games like this, but this was great. The only Mega Man stage and boss I've ever beaten was Chill Penguin.
It's really cool to hear a newcomer's perspective on the game and series. Can't wait to hear what you say about 5 and 6 especially! The series pretty much gets better as it goes!
I would recommend the PSP remake of Megaman 1 for newcomers. It changes the layouts, adds 2 new robot masters, story dialogue, updated graphics, and is overall easier. You can also play as the robot masters, Roll, and Protoman
Hell yeah man! I've been binging Mega Man reviews for such a long time, I'm really looking forward to see your takes in some of my favourite Mega Man games (Like Mega Man & Bass)
There's _one_ good thing to come out of that Magnet-Beam missplacement from MegaMan 1 though: After it, the developers started to give similar items for free (like the several Rush's forms at the end of Megaman 3's stages) and make their forced uses (if any) pretty much a Final Stage thing when you already have them all. Optional pick-ups just gave buffs or commodities more than necessities. Old school development teams were all about learning and having fun along with the players. Also: it seems time has had a negative effect on us; when young, I remember that every single "frustrating" occurrence during gameplay was more of a "challenge" to me. Curious that. Keep the videos coming, PikaSprey 😎🖒
I've only played the franchise in the past couple of years, but they've become some of my favourite NES/FC games. The Legacy collections exposed me to them, and I've since collected physical copies for NES/FC Hexalogy in the Japanese versions, they're a bit cheaper over all. The games definitely hold up to modern time, albeit they can be a bit rough for initial playthroughs, and should be played in a single sitting, if you can't beat it, come back another day and start over, you'll be amazed how you can just breeze through areas you struggled before.
I don't remember having too many problems with the hitboxes on the footholders (maybe I was lucky, or playing on the wii virtual console helps) but I had flashbacks to waiting so long for the first one to come down I started thinking about leaving to eat something.
Great analysis, i appreciate how considerate and thorough you are. I am already looking forward to the next part, as this video is so awesome! your thoughts are very interesting, thanks for sharing them
Megaman is one of my best friends favourite game franchises. Everything that i know about it, i learned from him. I have a great respect for these games for because of that.
I bought and played Megaman 1, 2, and 3 on my 3DS a while back, but I haven’t played them in a LONG time. I really need to go back to this series sometime.
Also I suggest to not stop after 3. 2 and 3 are the most popular but almost any bug fan will have their favorite in the higher numbers. Starting with 4 they add a lot of Quality of life updates.
it was probably the hardest game i'd played at the time. ice man's stage had a lot of glitches with the flying platforms where you would fall through them, so frustrating but a classic.
i'm the type of person to play games by franchise, so when i'm interested in a series, i play all of them, and it can make your head explode when playing series with so many entries and spin-offs like megaman or shin megami tensei.
I wanna see Pikasprey cover all of the Magaman games. If he had so much to say for Megaman 1, which has the least content, then I can't even imagine what he'll say for the rest of the games
bruh you made me want to play through these now. Never finished any myself but seeing these mechanics I never knew about at work gives me the urge to play 'em.
I've only really played one megaman game, and that was 7. Played it with my brother (we took turns beating levels) and loved it a lot! I should revisit it sometime... Thanks for bringing back some nice memories
Cut Man was intended to be done first because Rock beats Scissors, hence why the Rockbuster deals him 3 damage. Also, many would argue between Fire Storm and Thunder Beam as the best, so Thunder Beam isn't explicitly the best.
15:36 I feel you. I remember those platform robots in the iceman stage... it was a nightmare. I think the beam was a left over of a cut boss know as Bondman. I could be wrong. Great video.
The best strategy is to fight Gutsman first, then Cutman, then Elec Man, then Ice Man, then Fire Man. Then you take bomb man's bomb to use against Gutsman - wash, rinse, repeat. The Yellow Devil and the CWU-01P are RIDICULOUSLY difficult to deal with.
Considering how often people just write this game off, it's really cool to see this perspective giving it a fair shot, especially as somebody that played this entry first back when it was new. That said, I think my perspective is part of why I don't appreciate Mega Man 2 as much as everyone else does, and I feel like you might see it the same way when you get around to it.

This was an incredible review. As a huge fan of Mega Man, I can’t wait to see your opinion on the rest of the classic series. Especially the last two game boy games. They’re underrated in my opinion.
Cutsman's the name, cutting's my game and I don't mean hair!
HooHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-Hah!
"You may be advanced -- Mega Man X, But I'm on the CUTTING EDGE!"
This is so crazy I literally started to do the same thing and bought the legacy collection so that I could try them out for the first time. I only finished the first two so far and I can definitely see how good they are for their time can wait to see how they're improved as I go on to the series.
To explain the horrifying behavior of the Footholder robots, how they're programmed is that their physical hitbox is a tad shorter then their sprite, by like, 3 pixels, and an invisible platform is attached to the top that follows them, using the same behavior as the Magbeam, what happens is that when they move up, because the platform follows them, rather then being part of their existence, it lags behind a tiny bit and causes you to clip the enemy and flinch through them
Another funky behavior as such is that the game treats MegaMan standing on the Magbeam as "airborne" for aerial momentum calcs, which is why when you step off it, MegaMan tends to fall disturbingly fast if you didn't jump, the game has been seeing him as airborne and building momentum the entire time you walked across the beam(or stood on the footholder)
Hell yeah. Can't wait for you to get to X4, Z2 and Z3!!
Loose Tube --- and Powered Up, that underrated Remake of first Mega Man, that shouldn't be a commercial failure.
@@falendemo546 tbf I feel like that failed more so cause the psp failed. Not many people owned the console, can't imagine it sold well especially by Capcom standards
@@RyansFine --- wasn't PSP the best selling non-Nintendo handheld of all time?
@@falendemo546 tbh, despite obsessing over X-X5, the Zero series and classic 1-6, I have never played Powered Up!
@@falendemo546 Perhaps, but that's kinda my point. Unless it's nintendo, there's not really such a thing as a well-sold portable console. Nothing against the PSP or Vita for that matter, it's just the cold, hard truth they didn't sell nearly as well as Nintendo. Wanna stress I ain't talking about quality, only sales
Game analysis, pokemon, castlevania and now megaman, you're a man that speaks to my heart
im usually excited for your vids but now even moreso to see megaman coverage
And just like that, gone, like an angels kiss
I feel like Pikasprey would absolutely LOVE the Battle Network series. I remember hearing somewhere that the devs tried to capitalize on the popularity of both Pokemon and Yugioh, and created the battle system for the BN games from the mindset of collecting and customizing. Easily my favorite Megaman series. Hopefully we get a collection announced soon.
Indeed. BN is a Pokémon clone and a pretty good one at that.
He's already played them. Check his other channel, Pikasprey Blue.
The amount of time and attention put in your videos show how much care you put into them. I don't care if it takes months or even a year, but I hope you put the same amount of effort in not only the Megaman series, but to all your videos in general.
YES new video! I just rewatched a bunch of your old ones just a few days ago
RE: the footholders, the situation gets worse when you consider that if ANYTHING hits you while you are on the foot holders, you will fall THROUGH them during you invincibility frames (which can be EXTREMELY obnoxious :) )
I like the energy and enthusiasm in this video
Mega Man 1 is a bit rough around the edges, but it's pretty good.
Watching the Megaman 11 stream I did think it'd be nice for a Megaman series episode and you sure delivered! Watching another Canadian UA-camr do Megaman sure takes me back!
Subscribed and eagerly awaiting the other games.
I appreciate the Battle Network music in the background 🥰🥰
Welcome to the weird, wonderful and sometimes crushingly disappointing world of mega man! No turning back now
Deciding to get into all of Megaman is like deciding to get into all of One Piece - this dude is a madman and a legend.
No way, One Piece takes way longer. Trust me I've done both.
I just started One Piece last month and I'm nearly 200 episodes in already
@@majamystic256 I've been watching it for over 3 years and still haven't finished it yet
plz continue this as a series of all megaman games! loved this. I only played a later game so it is nice to see how it began.
Welcome back to UA-cam Pikasprey!
He has a second channel, he is never gone! He even streams on twitch.
@@asra-5180 Ah ok got it, but for the main channel he is back now
@@satopika ah okay. I thought you didn't know.
classic megaman is my favorite video game series of all time, you're gonna have a lot of fun going through them all
It's really cool to hear a newcomer's perspective on the game and series. Can't wait to hear what you say about 5 and 6 especially! The series pretty much gets better as it goes!
Very well made video. Definitely impressed with the quality
I would recommend the PSP remake of Megaman 1 for newcomers. It changes the layouts, adds 2 new robot masters, story dialogue, updated graphics, and is overall easier. You can also play as the robot masters, Roll, and Protoman
One of my favorite UA-camrs talking about one of my favorite series? Yes please!
Glad to have you back, I missed you man :D
I mean... he has a second channel where he is very active, soooo...
@@asra-5180 yeah, I know that, I just meant here in the main channel kkk
@@NerdTab ah alright.
Hell yeah man! I've been binging Mega Man reviews for such a long time, I'm really looking forward to see your takes in some of my favourite Mega Man games (Like Mega Man & Bass)
There's _one_ good thing to come out of that Magnet-Beam missplacement from MegaMan 1 though:
After it, the developers started to give similar items for free (like the several Rush's forms at the end of Megaman 3's stages) and make their forced uses (if any) pretty much a Final Stage thing when you already have them all.
I don't remember having too many problems with the hitboxes on the footholders (maybe I was lucky, or playing on the wii virtual console helps) but I had flashbacks to waiting so long for the first one to come down I started thinking about leaving to eat something.
as someone who has never really played megaman, this was a very interesting video, good job!
Great analysis, i appreciate how considerate and thorough you are. I am already looking forward to the next part, as this video is so awesome! your thoughts are very interesting, thanks for sharing them
Always a treat to see someone's first go at a game I love. I was also late to Mega Man. mid 2000's.
“All the mega man games” You absolute legend. Looking forward to these vids 🙌🏻
Megaman is one of my best friends favourite game franchises.
Everything that i know about it, i learned from him.
I have a great respect for these games for because of that.
A Mega Man marathon? Sign me up! I love the use of music from other MM games in the background too.
Waiting for the sequel, thank you for the amazing video!
I am so hyped for the coming reviews! So many awesome megaman games for you to go through!
it was probably the hardest game i'd played at the time. ice man's stage had a lot of glitches with the flying platforms where you would fall through them, so frustrating but a classic.
Congratulations for such a complete video!!!
Mega Man is my very favorite franchise!
i'm the type of person to play games by franchise, so when i'm interested in a series, i play all of them, and it can make your head explode when playing series with so many entries and spin-offs like megaman or shin megami tensei.
He’s Alive! Welcome back Pikasprey
He has a second channel where he is very active. He is never gone.
@@asra-5180 what’s the second channel?
I wanna see Pikasprey cover all of the Magaman games. If he had so much to say for Megaman 1, which has the least content, then I can't even imagine what he'll say for the rest of the games
bruh you made me want to play through these now.
Never finished any myself but seeing these mechanics I never knew about at work gives me the urge to play 'em.
A great video on the first Megaman game, keep up the good work
Oh man, I love classic Mega Man, can't wait for the rest of this series! Very entertaining to see a newcomer's perspective.
I've only really played one megaman game, and that was 7. Played it with my brother (we took turns beating levels) and loved it a lot! I should revisit it sometime... Thanks for bringing back some nice memories
Always a welcome when I see your videos. Love your woke! Always entertaining and makes a great day to see a new one!!
Cut Man was intended to be done first because Rock beats Scissors, hence why the Rockbuster deals him 3 damage.
Also, many would argue between Fire Storm and Thunder Beam as the best, so Thunder Beam isn't explicitly the best.
I really missed hearing your intro, glad to have you back
I enjoy your Pokemon videos, your Castlevania game reviews, and I enjoyed this review. Can't wait to see what else you tackle in the future.
Great To Have New Video From You Its Been Awhile.
15:36 I feel you. I remember those platform robots in the iceman stage... it was a nightmare. I think the beam was a left over of a cut boss know as Bondman. I could be wrong. Great video.
Nice to see you dive into my all time favorite series!
As a big fan of the original series (and anything Megaman), this video is super fun to watch!
I think the reason why there is points is because this is Capcom’s first console exclusive
Good luck, PikaSprey... you're gonna need it.
TY for doing the Megaman series
I love your videos where you branch off into other games. Can't wait to hear your thought son Mega Man 9 way down the road
