Thank you Meredith. I’m trying to recover my mobility after Bowel cancer, broken lumbar vertebrae and hip replacement. All in the last three years. I’m 77 and used to be energetic, slim and highly mobile. Now I’m just struggling to walk and suffering with constant pain. I’m really struggling to get back my life. I’m following your weights exercises with a bunch of similar seniors in London. We love your clear instructions, your breathing, and your workouts. Thanks so much, Diana.

    Hi Meredith!
I teach balance in many of my senior group fitness classes and see a constant deviation. I hope you can help me with a cue that might work.
Generally the gluteus medius are so weak that abduction isn’t executed correctly. Rather than the toes pointing straight forward, their toes point upward so they’re actually using more quads/hip flexors in the lifting phase.
I have cued numerous ways to express the movement yet cannot see many at all adjust at all. From “toes point to me” (I’m in front of them), to “lift with the heel” to “kneecaps face forward”...still no change. This population ranges from late 70’s - late 80’s.
Do you have any suggestions or verbal cues that you think might help? Oh- I do have them sit and extend leg out front, foot flexed, and abduct and adduct. Yet the same muscles aren’t recruited but I was hoping it would help them orientate them to keeping the toe up, rather than turning out.
Loving your new videos this year! Thank you always for your help!

Hi Carol! I am so happy you are enjoying our new videos!!
As for your great question: I, too, have seen the same results from the many ways I try to cue this. My go to now is saying "feel as if a string is leading your leg out to the side from your heel" and remind them that how high the leg goes is not the objective. It is to activate all the correct areas, as in any movement we do.
I hope this helps them execute correctly, and helps you with cuing the exercise :)
Thanks again Carol for watching, and all the great questions and comments!
      Take care!
      Meredith

Thank you Meredith! I will stress the point is NOT to lift high. That may be part of my issue in that because I can lift high - they try to and then end up rotating their toes upward. I’m going to keep my foot low the next time- with the same cues and see if that doesn’t help!

@@CarolJoyable , that sounds like a great idea! I too will say "I lift high so you can see what I am doing." The constant reiterating to reinforce and remind.
Let me know how it goes next time.
Take care Carol! Keep up the great work!
