    When I was a teenager I installed these for my friends at the local gas station using the exact same method. They were so realistic that you had to touch them to see if it was a porta wall.

    Good video. ATLAS is the only way to go on Portawalls. I had some that were not ATLAS, and they were very stiff and wrinkled. I got lucky, and my local tire shop knew how to install them right. Never had problems with running them for a year +

    Great video and technique! One question.
    Some reviews on Amazon talk about the white wall turning brown in a few months, AND not being able to be cleaned. Have you experienced this? I use Bleach White cleaner. The original Porter wall from years ago stated on its box, that the white wall not turning brown, so I'm wondering if the new material of today is inferior in that way.

    are they reusable? Like if I ever needed to replace a tire can I take it off and put it on the next one?

      You just have to keep on em, bleach white or any tire wheel cleaner with a scotch pad or micro fiber cloth. You have to do it often.

  • @classicvwbugs
    @classicvwbugs  11 років тому

    well as long as you have an air compressor you should be able to do it. The tire should just be fastened down somehow.

    I want to buy these for a motorcycle, but it's a tubeless tire and i wanted to make sure that it doesnt leak the air, i might get that sealer in order to avoid air leaks... And hey how do they looks after having them on some months? do they lose the shape or do they are still tight to the tire?

    When you break the bead, how much pressure do you keep in the tires? Once I break the bead, will inflating the tire just set the bead automatically?

    lack of experience I suppose. I'm also walking in with my own tires, so they haven't made that much money off me!
    I don't understand why you put bead sealer on there, because you put the portawall on top of the tire, so won't the bead sealer be squished in between the tire and portawall?

    • @classicvwbugs

      Jon D These are 15inch with the 1 3/4" whitewall. You cannot go any wider white wall than these for this tire, nor can you use a lower profile tire with these. They will fly right off.

    Hey Chris, just wondering what brand of tyre that is, it looks alot like my Michelin XZX's? Also have you had any problem with the whitewall cutting into the sidewall of the tire from the friction? I was told that the atlas cut really bad unless you use some gross red grease that slings all over the car, have you experienced anything like that?

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  10 років тому

      I dunno maybe a kuhmo or nanking tire. I have not really seen cut in on the tires. That only really happens when you are driving 70mph or more. The lil 36hp VWs that I have do not do that. I do not recommend these portawalls if you plan to drive highway a lot, or have a pumped up motor. Portawalls are for puddle jumping around town.

    • @XVIIIMCMLXXXVIII

      Oh yeah, they are Michelin XZX's, just saw the logo then when I freeze framed it. Thats good to hear regarding cut in, I know you would have heaps of experience with them considering you have dealt with so many portawalls and beetles! I only really do city driving in my 56, so I should feel more comfortable in buying some atlas whites then. Thanks as always for taking the time to reply Chris!

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  8 років тому

      +James Macintyre Ahhh... not really, if it did you would know it, it would crimp.

    • @jacintyre
      @jacintyre 8 років тому +1

      +Chris Vallone yeah I didn't think it would be, see my portawall doesn't sit totally flat against the sidewall of the tire, it has a bit of air between it and the tire, like a sort of a balloon. I followed the video and malleted it evenly the whole way round, and it is even but if I push on the portawall with my finger, it's like a soft button.

    Sorry but imo these things are the worst thing to put on your tyres!! They can rub and cut in to the tyre if not looked at on a regular basis not to mention they come off. Paint the white on or get real white walls.
    Oh and don't grind into your tyre wall as this weakens it and is illegal.

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  9 років тому +4

      We have used these for years, they are meant for the right tire, a stock car, not a performance car, and basically good for VWs to keep under 70mph. If you have a VW and stay in this criteria, you are fine with these, you really have to install them correctly. They usually fail when they are not installed right.
