I have a 2004 VW NB Tdi. Five speed 515,000+ miles on the car. My daughter learned how to drive with this car. Never broke down on the road. MAP is one of the 5 I experience. 325K replaced the clutch 400k replaced glow pug harness and cam shaft while getting timing belt change. 440k heater core replaced. That’s it! Always use Liqui -moly oil 7,000, fuel filters ever 30K mile intervals and timing belt every 90K. Oh. I swapped out the headlight assemblies because I could buff out the plastic anymore.
Faulty window motors are very common in VWs of that era; everyone I know who had a Golf or a Jetta from the late 90's/early 2000's has a story about how the window motors failed on them, often in a storm!
Yup, they also have this weird habit for dropping their windows inside the door panel. Mine has done this twice and one time the window broke inside and it was such a PITA to clean up all the broken glass!
Thank you very much for the video!! I just bought a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle and i love it! But i have been having some of the problems that you mentioned 🥰 excellent video 👌🏻
I own a 2003 1.9 TDI beetle luna convertible with 130k plus mileage, only issue I've had is the power steering going faulty, other than that the engine/turbo is really reliable even passed 130k mileage. Nippy cars the 2.0's would recommend 👌
I wish these were the only problems my Volkswagens had! I'd have a lot more money, that's for sure. Unfortunately, I still haven't learned my lesson and continue to love these things, regardless of the financial stress they cause. Excellent video, though!
My 2001 Vw beetle was used when I bought it and I’ve put a few thousands in it over the 3 years I’ve had it. But now everything just be falling apart the door makes sounds the window don’t want to roll up sometimes now it’s driving funny. I love my car just wish it was more reliable
@@anilec333 I swear my beetle has its own personality lol me and my family joke about my car because one day the door will be broke then the next time you look the door will be fixed on its own this car is a trip lol it was just broken down now it woke up on its on perfectly fine but I’m still going to put it in the shop but it’s strange everyone says my car is unique but it reminds me of that movie Herbie fully loaded with Linsey Lohan lol
Two things are missing: 1. Those with the 2.5 engine always develop a severe oil leak 2. The headlight connections can never be plugged back in right if you have to replace a bulb.
You forgot #6, the leaking 3rd brake light that cause corrosion in the connectors which in turn causes the loss of power to the hatch and it won't open
Thanks for your excellent video, but the biggest problem on this Beetle, is chassis corrosion. Just disassemble the front and rear fenders and you will find a big surprise, even if the car has been taken care of to the maximum.
I had a 2003 vw beetle convertible and it cost me soo much! First transmission went out completely, the side interior panels kept falling, 4 M.A. sensors, throttle body clean, thermostat, the heat never worked the people before me used premium gas so I had to use that and then my beetle left me stranded like 3 times ohh and the shifter for the PRNDL broke so I had to lift the plastic each time to get it to the next gear …and the trunk loved to pop open even when I didn’t touch it!
I suggest adding negative battery to the alternator wires, and starter they seem to burn. How many window regulators should I buy once the OEM breaks? I have installed 4 or these and machined brass pulley wheels to get them to last longer. The door pulls break off and needs an after-market replacement.
My daughter's 2006 had a constant issue with Volkswagen's version of a P.C.V. Valve. There's a rubber diaphragm that literally looks like a piece of Salami that wears out and dosen't allow the car to idle correctly. We were also advised not to fill up the gas tank past 3/4 or there would be issues with flooding out the Carbon Canister. Aside from all it's little quirks , when it was running right it was a great little car . Amazingly even in an Ohio winter.
Greetings. I own a 1.8 20vt Beetle Turbo S and you were right, had to change the coolant temp sensor. Know, there is the weird sound on full throttle, usually after the car sits a long time, that sounds like tiny tiny knocks, and I was told it is the knock sensor. There are no fault codes stored on the ECU. I run some tests on a dyno, the car is full health, 174bhp. Should I change the knock sensor with an aftermarket improved one just in case?
A friend has a beetle that has no cabin heat. The dealership told her that the foam on the heat/ac door has rotted off and that this is a VERY COMMON problem. They said that it costs over 2000 dollars to fix, and that her car is not worth that so just junk it. So much for German engineering!
I've had my 2001 beetle since new, 22 years now and 329,000 miles. Only real issues I had were the window regulators in both doors. Mine's diesel so it doesn't have some of the other problems.
My friend had a blue 2004 VW new beetle, we were driving out of the car park of a shopping centre and the engine begun to rev up and down of its own accord, we were moving less than 5 miles an hour with cars beeping us behind, I was genuinely concerned that the engine might stall itself but it didn’t .
The core support is plastic, so if you have a cheap aftermarket core support it may sag preventing the hood from latching when closed. I have to adjust my latch all the way up. I may actually add a removable metal frame to raise and stiffen up the core support
A friend has a 2004 Beetle and it won't shift properly until the car has warmed up. Otherwise you have to lift your foot off the gas and then it will. Kind of like Chevy powerglides would do when they were getting old. Any ideas....water temp sensor??
The wife has a 2015 beetle convertible and the window regulator broke and I could only get it from VW . They had a 2 week waiting period for a service appointment so I put it in myself but it had some thrice to installing it and adjusting it. Putting the door card back on was a real pain.
I e got an issue where the door handle works. But it pulls out beyond where it is supposed to. It must have some kind of a stop mechanism to stop it coming out too far but this isn't the case with mine. Any ideas?

my mum and dad's VW beetle has a problem with the driver side window, it has been stuck up for years now, other than that the car has been running seamlessly since it wa ls bought in 1999.
Really touchy when removing coolant cap on a sealed system. Very easy to get air pushed or sucked into system...then.u get air pockets in the system. Then it gets locked, and will lead to the system being bled wich is a process that is time consuming, but not necessarily hard to do. Patience is the ticket, there's no way to do anything on German vehicles that is rushed.
The mass air flow sensor takes a special torx bit to remove. It's got a security pin in the center AND it's got 5 points (and not the normal 6). The bits are available aftermarket from some European parts places. It's kind of pointless to use this specialized fastner because you can use vice grips or cut a screw slot in it with a hacksaw to remove it.
@@scottmeuchel Not really, you can just take off the wheel well liners and access the bulbs from there, much easier to do than remove the front clip. Although you’ll have to remove it when the radiator or fans inevitably stop working 🥲
