This is a short video on the infamous PortaWall White Wall Inserts. I discuss the Dos and Don'ts to these inexpensive options to white walls.

I was recently @ DubSplash in Texas, ran into a guy who started talking about whitewall options. I told him you had done a video on the portawalls. His negatives were basically everything you just covered, fraying, yellowing, peeling etc.

l have them on my bus in the thumb nail, the back tires after a ride will have a gap in them for about a half hour, the tire flex will push them out, but the fronts are fine, less weight, these are also the 3 inch ones so that dosent help.
Yeah the 3" wide white is too big, they flop out.

Glad I watched this. Bought a car and the guy put a set of brand new blackwall tires on it just a couple days before I bought it from him. He said he didn't want blackwalls, but couldn't find whitewalls. Turns out he did _not_ look online first, where he could have bought a set of whitewalls for the same price as the blackwalls... I'd hate to spend another $400 to replace a _brand new_ set of tires, so I was hoping PortaWalls would be a cheaper solution. The car will be a daily driver that gets taken on the highway, though, so it looks like these aren't an option for my situation.

Diamondback Classics (not Coker) for the best quality wide whitewall radials. When I do use portawalls only the Atlas brand.
What is 165? The width? Why would the width matter? You would think the side ratio would be important.
I'm restoring a '64 Shasta camper and was looking at whitewall options. Do you think these would work?

Question: You said you do not recommend installing them on a 145 tire. I have 145R12 tires on my Daihatsu Mira Walk-Through that I ordered Atlas Portawalls for. You don't think they will install correctly on such a small tire? It's a slow vehicle 55 - 60 mph max and 45 mph average and generally used for car shows etc.
Yeah you need a good size side wall.

I'm installing a nice set of Atlas porta walls on my 1990 Cadillac Eldorado E&G classic model. My question is should I wash the tire and allow to dry or just break the bead and use bead sealer and insert and install them. Thank you

I wouldn't, these are good for slow cars, low torque.

I bought the omega brand and I agree the quality is not the best they bubbled up in the front and would hear them flapping while driving

Yeah no, don't do that, just find a vert if you could. Easier. =o)
Thanks for the information. I am restoring 56'Nash Metropolitan and tires are P155-80-R13. Can I use Portawalls for this size tire? Thanks in advance.
I think they do have them your size, just gotta be cautious, they are not meant for speed.

Eh I wouldn't, they are for slow cars say up to 65mph
@@classicvwbugs the w123 is a very slow car... I think the top speed is 90mph and takes 2 month to get there... ehehe so in your opinion, paint it is a better option right? Cheers from Portugal!

I recently purchased a set of portawalls and installed properly on my crown victoria, the two on the front keep popping from around the rim, I'm lost I've done everything possible
First off, you do not put porta walls on a crown vic. Portawalls are good for small cars with small engines and low torque. A big car like a crown vic? Oh boy. No way they would stay in.
Ok, this one is different. I ordered a set of 17" Portawalls for my 2016 Chrysler 200. I took the car in to have them installed this morning, but did not bring instructions with me. We tried one tire to see how it would go. Instant death. We were lost. I then came home and wrote the step by step instructions and will head out again to try it all over. I think too, we need a larger mallet. The little one did next to nothing. Will keep you posted as to the outcome. I think too that at speeds of 70+, would cause a problem, but if kept under that to 65 and at times 70, there should not be a problem with a frayed edge. Am I correct?
hmmm, i dunno man, newer cars should not use them. It is not even the speed, but the torque could ruin them. Beetles are fine to use them, they are only 25-60hp.
I drive like an old fart and mostly on back roads. I put less than 400 miles on my car in a month. IF they fall off, then oh well, it was worth a try and then I go to the next step and order a real white wall tire from Coker at $250 each.

I have 135/R15 up front and 165/R15 on my '56 beetle. I recently bought new tires and new port-o walls ...they started browning around the edges a few weeks after I bought them. I did not put anything on the tires after they were installed. I noticed that the browning mostly occurs is the edge goes over the text on the tires. I have pics...mooneyes says its my problem. Anyone else have this issue?
Use Bleach White white wall cleaner or Walmart kitchen bleach cleaner mix.

Chris, what about a big luxury car? I have a 96 Town Car that I love & I wanted to put the vogue tires on it but right now I dont have that kind of cash. Would these tire trims be okay on a car like mine?
hmmm, I would not recommend it, a little too much torque on that car over a beetle. Plus you would need to stay below 65 mph.

@@robertsean5062 Not really, they are not made for any specific car, they are all made the same. You can try it I guess, they are not expensive, but I would just get them properly mounted by a tire shop. No guarantee that they will stay in though.
@@classicvwbugs Thanks Chris. Damn! I want to get some nice whitewalls for this car but they're so expensive. Gonna have to put a few bucks away. Besides, I dont see these inserts in my tire size anywhere 16's
You wont be able to touch my tires to see it they are fake or not thats like messing with a crazy dog trying to touch his food

do you have a video on assembling the sheet metal on a vw motor? Is it normal to have the thermostat removed? I have a 70 bug but the thermostat was removed before i got it, and we are rebuilding the motor and noticed it was gone.
Yeah many times they are removed. If this is a fair weather car, not a daily, you should be ok without it. If you need tin assembly tip, there are videos on my site in the resto tips section that can show you. I found a guys 3-4 part video on engine rebuild, he shows it.

Why should I stay away from the 3in white wall?
HI, PUT THESE ON MY 68 BUG CONVERTIBLE, LOOKED GREAT , BUT STAINED THE FIRST TIME OUT. IT LOOKS LIKE USED MOTOR OIL ALL OVER THEM AND COULDN'T GET THEM WHITE AGAIN. WE PUT THEM ON BRAND NEW TIRES. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THESE TO ANYONE, WASTE OF MONEY.
Only if you do not keep on them. I mention in the video you need to keep them clean, no tire wet on them either. After every run you have to inspect them. It's a cheap white wall, you want the real thing, you need to shell out the $175.00 a piece to get real ones.
