Gregg Rolie has a one in a million voice. Steve Perry has a one in a billion voice. What an amazing performance.
They both opened their mouths and the Gates of Rock opened wide!
Well said. They both complimented each other.
Perry chased Rolie out of the band with his p****-ass writing!!!
One in a billion - that's it.
My thoughts exactly
This should never be played alone, but always with Anytime
_Ooh, anytime that you want me… ooh, anytime that you need me… I’m standin’ here with my arms a mile wide…_
They did, but it’s split in two for more clicks.🤬😡 ua-cam.com/video/AiRhLyLmB1c/v-deo.htmlsi=bDSR30hzndOP5u76
The best Journey lineup, with Gregg and Steve.
Don't forget Aynsley Dunbar!!

Agreed
Bigeazy87 - I couldn't possibly agree with you MORE! Gregg and Steve sounded amazing together. I might also add... Ross Valory never got enough credit for his innovative bass line contributions.
Could you imagine what would’ve happened if Gregg stayed in the band… He probably felt overshadowed by Steve… But this combo could not be beat…
I saw Journey back in the day. That was really the Golden Age of Pop/Rock. It's worth being old now to have been young back then.
WOW, so true!!!❤
100%
The beautiful contrast in voices between Gregg and Steve. I get chills when Steve comes in though.
I agree 100 percent. No two voices sound better together except maybe Cornell and vedder.
Never realized how much Ross Valley on bass added to the layers of harmony.
It’s like awesome sounding at first then 💥 WtF…. Even better! The times of Journey! 😊
@@lindamoore6163 they were very special
The drummer in the video was Ansley Dunbar.
This is the Journey I remember. They were the best ❤
What a fantastic time to be alive and know Journey !! Second to none.
I really enjoyed the Rolie/Perry era, nothing else like it
Wow!! The voice!! The guitar solo!! Where did talent like this go? Nobody this good today.
Today they all sound the same.
American idle killed music.
Agreed. And the stupid auto-tune voices of today are a disgrace to music.
To say no one is this good is a hardcore shortsighted view. I’m aware the status quo is basic as shit but there is an astounding amount of good new music out there by insanely good musicians. Musicians that certainly stand up to this. Please look harder for it. Remember the stories all the greats would tell about the struggles of finding “that record”? Nothings changed. The detours just have different names.
@@monty4336 "American idle" LOL. Good one. I'm gonna borrow that.
No only does Steve Perry sound fucking brilliant, the rest of the band killed the backing vocals!
....and they did that totally live in 1978 OMG
1978 was a true golden era. The music was phenomenal ... and so were the young ladies!
How many bands...today...can play like that together...and sing like that together...LIVE! Incredible band.

How many bands actually play live on TV. Pretty close to zero. Too much to lose laying it all on the line.
None
@@2damnoldforUtube there is and never was such a thing as live TV
Yeah. Gregg watches Steve. They really feed off of each other! ❤️
My favorite Journey song. I can sing along with Rollie but Steve Perry is on another level. When he belts out the end of the song, gives me a chill. What a voice.
This is something I would say - stop using my words :)
That strong perfect voice, Love you Steve! 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵
The best mix of voices in rock history, that's what made journey magic
My aunt just sent me the link to this. Saying, "Gives me shivers, seeing and hearing my boyfriend singing that song."
Shout out to Aunt Kim, may you never stop believing!
Keeps me going
He's EVERY girls bf 😍
Midnight special. My sister and I would watch it together when we were kids.
Steve Perry .. ... this band would never have risen to what it did without this superstar voice and presence.. love you Journey .. always ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh to be 17 again. My high school days. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. As they say, but the music was magical and Don Kirshner brought it to us every week. Cheers
I’m the same age and was thinking the exact same thing. To go back would be magical
@@joannarippon3910 I don't think I would really want to go back to those times. A little too much teenage angst to deal with, however if I could return with what I know now. That would be interesting to say the least. Unfortunately that's not possible except through the music. That's why I love this channel. I can relive the good times and don't have to bother with the bad. Man! A lot of water has flowed under that bridge. Best wishes. Cheers from Tennessee
While it's somewhat overshadowed by the Perry/Rollie back-and-forth, Neil Schon's guitar solo in this is sublime.
That's the problem with Journey - the vocals are so good that you forget how good the guitar solos or for that matter how good the rest of this music is.
Steve Perry starts to sing and I have goosebumps all over.........Oh baby ! ❤ He is a gift......❣❤❤❤
Steve Perry's REAL FANS voted him the "GREATEST ROCK VOCALIST" ever through Billboard in September,2023.Steve acknowledged the win 🏆 with his usual humble self!
I love the harmony between the two. This Journey feels like the peak in terms of musicianship.
This is from a time when music 🎶 was at it's best
It was a time when Melody was important and essential.
Rolie Journey is the BEST Journey
They totally blew it up that night. I was 10
I know this is a weird reply but me too I was 10 and definitely remember seeing this.
@@cgeorge6786 actually appreciate it brother. Even though we grew up in a time when some abuse was still prevalent and hidden , there were other ways that it was really good. Good music
What an amazing voice. And to think our local ( Tampa Bay) dj’s mocked him without mercy. I never understood that.
The best journey lineup ever! Gregg Rollie Steve Perry two of the best voices ever!
I absolutely loved it when they shared lead vocals, those are actually some of my very favorite journey songs.❤❤❤
The glorified cover band that calls itself journey that is out there now is not and will never be journey to me!😢
I saw Journey in concert back in 1983. Ahh..Steve Perry- What a voice. What a show. What a night.
Who else's brain instantly heard "OoooOoooh Anytime that you want me" When it ended? PFM Pure Fuckin Magic
LOL, Yep, then the intro, duh doon doon, duh doon nerr , nerrrr 🎸
For those whose best times in our lives were in the 80's listening to this incredible music !!!! Hell yeah !!!!
Can you believe 40+ yrs!! 😮
@@kayfitzgerald309 HOW DID THAT HAPPEN ?? 😆
@@christys8445 IKR!!!
I hate Math!!!
Math sux 🎶
(Jimmy Buffett 😉)
I got here at just the right time. Steve Perry's voice and that harmony is wonderful live. Thank you.
Zero autotune 👍
Everything about this song is fantastic, the lyrics, lead voice, phenomenal guitar solo and great harmonies. Fires on all cylinders.
I love this song it's so beautiful and special 🎉🎉. 💕 it is sounding phenomenal ❤️ ♥️ 💖. The Midnight Special showcased all types of talent 🎉🎉. Ty for giving us a glimpse into their future success 🎉🎉. They are just the epitome of rock and roll 🎉🎉
One of my fave Journey songs, really rich vocals blended nicely & a soaring guitar performance, an FM radio staple 🎸📻
This Song should Never be underestimated!
Greatest of the Journey lineups....Rolie and Perry were so great together.
I was a Journey fan before Steve Perry ("Look into the future" is a great song). Journey really exploded after Steve joined and they probably never would have attracted the mass market like they did without him. His amazing voice meshes perfectly with the rest of the band and also Greg's voice. The band actually got a little too pop for me later on, even though I love some of those songs too, but Infinity was the perfect blend. Such a great album! It's really good to see them live on this Midnight Special channel. I missed this back then. Thanks!
Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie where perfect together. In the 90s I had a shoe store in Corte Madera Ca. Steve Perry came in looking for nike air revolutions size 7. I really wanted to ask him about Gregg and him. I didn’t of course just helped him
With shoes. We had lots of musicians come in. Very close to San Francisco and Mill Valley where many lived. Never asked anything of anyone . Grace Slick, Dave Coverdale , Todd Rudgren, just to name a few. Never asked for autographs either. This performance just brought back to me those great times.
And this boys and girls is how it’s done! Good luck there is only one Steve and one Journey! 🤘 ❤
Aynsley Dunbar on drums
No autotune kiddies. Real musicians playing real music.
Vocals, Vocals, Vocals !
No tricks, No tips Just flat out Gettin it !
I cannot imagine a person not liking this song. It is such a great “feel good” song.
Steve Perry's voice was a Gift from the Gods he was that good !
God!
My favorite thing about the midnight special was it’s just about the music…if you’re invited you’ve paid some dues. show up and show out and be glam if you want but perform and we’ll give a great opportunity to showcase your talents
Name one band from today that has two quality singers like this. You can't
Somehow, I missed out on Journey in 1978. I graduated HS in May '78, joined the Army in Jan. '79, and wasn't aware of Journey until I got to my duty station at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii in Sept. '79. They were HUGE when I got there, and I couldn't get enough Journey....good times.
They were around far longer than that. I discovered them in 1975ish. No Steve Perry. Gregg did all the vocals then. They seemed to me like a Rock Jazz Fusion style. I enjoyed them then and after they added Steve. All the ego's aside, they made great music.
In the drums Ansley Dunbar
So great. Perry is really unbelievable.
Awesome! But it feels so wrong without "Anytime" right after it!
So true😢
💯
My ‘best of’ playlist has Feelin’ That Way and Anytime forever joined. Same with La Do Da and Patiently. Heck, add in Lights and you’ve got side 1 of Infinity-what an amazing album.
Singing live so good sounded like recordings
Original Journey-The best line up
I got chills when Steve Perry came in. Wow. We didn’t know what we had, did we?
The guitar solo is amazingly perfect
Sounded kinda flat to me.
Neil Schon is a monster guitarist
The one and only thing that would have made this better is if they went into "Anytime"..
Oh yeah..actually TWO things..
If I could have been there - front row !! 😊
70s and 80s lots of great music 🎵🎶🎵
Reminds me of being 15 in 78. First girlfriend Amy. A whole life ahead. Id kill to go back and do it over.
This my favorite lineup Dunbar is on the drums I would to see this today 2024
This is an amazing memory! Love this ❤
I saw them in concert. They were AWESOME !! 🥰
Me too. 🎉
The people in the audience don't fully comprehend how privileged they are right now.
A fairly high percentage of them are dead.
@@headlibrarian1996LOL…that was funny!
nice, let's go Rangers!
Ahh Steve Perry’s beautiful voice. Perfection ❤
I saw Journey 3 times! Forgot how much I loved this band!🥰
Great as always. Midnight Special was so good in that the performances were truly live.
One of my all time favorite bands and Steve Perry is perfection.
This was my first single 45rpm. Won it at 7 years of age from a local radio station. I was a little kid just digging Kiss, Boston, Journey, Van Halen, RUSH... no older siblings, no one to lead the way, just my ears...
Oh wow…. So awesome!❤
One of my all time favorite journey songs
Greg Rollie has such a smooth voice.
If you weren't there... in that generation, then you'll never know...
Journey was one of the best concerts I ever went to..The memories this song brings back..❤
You can throw as many karaoke singers in there as you want...no Perry=no Journey
What a great time in life to hear this incredible band. And Steve is truly THE VOICE !!
I must say though that having Arnel has kept Journeys music alive for a new generation. Replace Steve ? No way. But the torch was passed to him and even Arnel says he was never and could never replace Steve.
As Steve's life went on, I don't think Steve has any regrets. He is living the life he couldlnt have as a rockstar and got to meet the love of his life Kellie Nash. He gave us all he had until he had to give his life to himself to live it to the fullest. Yes. Steve will always be Journey. It's his legacy.
Yep.
You must be young. There was a journey before Steve Perry that was very successful
@@silat13really?? I do not remember that
Lucky enough to see this lineup 1 year after this telecast for their Evolution tour in 3,000 seat Shea’s Buffalo Theatre. The superb acoustics of that venue let these guys really shine and the crowd got them to stay for THREE encores!
I truly and honestly thought the video footage of this show was lost to time. I've been sitting on a bootleg of the audio for years, and beyond the scant few videos the band kept from this era, like "Lights", there's not much to be found. The fidelity is glorious for such old footage.
Would love to get this on DVD; always have been a huge Journey fanatic, from their classic stuff to their modern.
I remember that week seemed like it would never end. Very impatient for JOURNEY ✌️💞🎶🙏
It was worth the wait
9 years before this performance, Neal Schon and Gregg Rollie were rocking with Santana at Woodstock.
A lot of people either don't know this or they forget that Rollie was the voice of Black Magic Woman and other great Santana hits. Schon is among the best rock guitarists in rock history.
Journey still blew them away
Love the old Journey.
Why can't people make music like that anymore
Because Western civilization is purposefully being destroyed by those in power. We live in a culture that is in decline and the arts reflect that.
Omg..look at them..I remember this
I would never want to sing on the same stage as Steve Perry. :)
Journey at their very best.
Steve perry is probably the best singer in the history of rock music
Robert Plant , Chris Cornell , Sam Brown.
No probably about it...and one of the great front men for any rock band too.
Chris Cornell 😞
Um....Freddy Mercury?!?
@@michaelscot4816great singers, but I don’t think even Plant had the range, Freddie Mercury, Geoff Tate… that’s range
Steve’s hair though…..feathered to perfection!
none thats called pure talent
Somehow he sung this better live than on the record, and the records version kicks ass!
This exact video has been my favorite for several years. This is pristine compared to others. Chokes me up. Love this so much ❤️
Great band and great sound! Classic!
God I love that song!!!
Goosebumps !!😅
What A Great Song! WooF!!🐶🐶
No lip sync here, what a voice❤ I was lucky to grow up with this music.
This was their best Rolie and Perry
Love ansley dunbar!! Miss him !
Ooooh Oooooh Anytime that you want me!
Not lip syncing. Love it.
I bought the "Infinity" album back on release and played "Lights" and went wow - what a voice. On to the next track "Feeling That Way", and it started off nice with Greg Rolie singing a lovely verse to start - and then, and then - "when the Summer's gone she'll be there, standing by the lighight, once she's been ......" - {the most incredible first time listening music moment I had ever experienced since I heard Paul Rodgers sing on "Ride on a Pony" with Free and Ronnie James Dio sing "Ain't it all Amusing with Elf (if you have not heard this song you need to - to me his greatest ever vocal performance) some years earlier}. Steve Perry then repeated that music moment when he cut in on "Anytime" after a Greg Rolie verse and then he went to chilling heights on "Something to Hide". On this one album, he established himself along with Steve Walsh as the co-masters of that thing that they both have - the ability to take your breath away with their voice which is so good that you can forget how good the music is playing behind them. Subsequent singers to do that to me the very first time I heard them include Mickey Thomas when I first heard "Jane" and Jon Stevens when I first heard "Take Me Back".
The ONLY thing wrong with this is not rolling into
🎶eeeeeeeww anytime that you want me🎶
Without Greg Rolie after he left, its just wasn't the same.
You know you made it when you appear on the Midnight Special...
Use to watch this and Don Kirshners Rock Concert...
