Totally FLAWLESS! James wasn't reading lyrics from a telepromter, their timing and sound was PERFECT! You can tell they worked hard to learn this and to perfect it. This shows how important it was to them to honor Elton and Bernie. Giving THAT performance was class, respect and tribute all in one! I'm proud to be a fan of music today.
Metallica is already legend status. When they are pumped, motivated, and turned ON, they are fucking gods. When something brings out that little extra fire they have, nobody can match them.
I don’t know how long it took the guys to learn that song or how many times they had to practice it, but damn, it’s an incredible arrangement and flawless performance! Phenomenal job, Metallica👏🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
Honestly I have never been a Metallica fan (but have had respect for their talent.). Their cover of what is Elton and Bernie’s hardest/rocking song was absolutely spot on. Loved it!!!!
This band has such an extremely unique and characteristic sound, that they make any music they play, from basically any style, sound like their own. I’m sure that at this point they could cover Bob Marley and make it seem like a new single they are presenting
I'm only 55 and love that you old farts love this stuff! 😝🤘😝 I've seen these guys four times, first in '86, then in '91, then in '91 (haha, first New York then L.A.), then in '96. I have to get back out there and see them! They're like a fine wine! They just keep getting better and better.
Mind Blown !!!!...Metallica NAILED IT . this song has to be in their set list now..who would have seen this coming 30 years ago.?..sure as hell not me .
This is truly one of the most incredible rock tribute performances of all time. Yes, I too have come back again and again to watch. What an amazing arrangement and performance by Metallica.
Incredible. Elton and Bernie have had four albums total of their covers and no one had the balls to take a crack at this musical masterpiece (although there are several covers of the song on UA-cam). Metallica took on the chore and DID it live and in front of Elton and Bernie. Perfect arrangement that both takes the song in different directions as well as paying homage to the original. Just what a great cover should do. Much as Brandi Carlisle has done with another Elton/Bernie masterpiece, Madman Across the Water. This one will be on my You Tube playlist until the end of (my) time along with an Elton version (my favorite is the one from his 60th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden).
I didn't know the line up preformers at the start of the show and later seen James in the front row audience ,, thinking ,,, would be great to see Metallica do a cover,,,, the rest is history🤘
There aren't enough like buttons for this... you need a more than like button. Metallica has somehow undergone a late career renaissance- they sound just as good as they used to when they recorded Puppets, and what an amazing skill of organizing non-metal songs into metal. Well done boys.
I think Lars is in the unusual position of having both the best and worst drum sound on a metal record (The Black album drums and snare especially are monstrous and then St Anger is the absolute opposite, which was the point but we all wish it hadn't been)
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was hands down my favorite album from Elton....and this was the song that made it that way...Metallica absolutely did it justice!!!
They nailed it so much.. they’ve won the audience through the whole cover. Harmonies, clear singing.. and mighty punch ! They prove again why they’re so good at this, and why they are Metallica !
It's nice to see the spotlight shining on real musicians and not just 'hip hop hooligans' and 'auto tune pop princesses'. Metallica's amazing performance was a testament to superb songwriting of Elton John and Bernie Taupin , as well as the flawless synchronicity of a top tier band
MIND BLOWN😱 How do they do it, perform perfection with flawless playing. Metallica is so damn amazing, I'm so lucky to of been born in this era. Thank you metallica forever✌️
Hetfield has matured extremely well, his vocals are on point, and his guitar work is always super tight.Overall the band is firing on all cylinders 🤟🤟🤟
What 'Tallica have done here is nothing short of amazing..they have taken a classic song, paid respect & homage to it, especially in front of the writers of said song, but they have also put their DNA into it without ruining it..amazing performance..
It looks aged naturally. If you notice the cut-out it's darker and the headstock area is lighter. That happens naturally. I have a ESP Edwards Eclipse that I bought Arctic White. 8 years later now it looks between cream and off-white. It's normal for guitars with white paint.
This was the best cover I have ever heard, Metallica always delivers. They are the greatest band in the Universe, their music has helped me through a lot. The fact that they can take any song, and cover it, also add their DNA into it. It’s amazing how they can do that, while still paying respects to the song truly amazing.
I've been listening to Metallica since I was 11 and I'm now 50. And I never thought I'd hear Metallica do a cover of Elton John... this band continues to surprise me in a good way and I love their open-mindedness. Metallica have always been incredibly good at covers and they're proving it once again. When can we expect another Garage inc?
I'd say no to another Garage Inc. They did it once, thats it....just my opinion. I saw them in Toronto for the Garage Inc mini tour, club show, 1100 people, give or take. Metallica cover band "Battery" opened for them. And the same for me... started with the band as a kid when RTL came out and have been there ever since. Im 51. Peace bro.
my oh my these metal heads showed some real LOVE for this fine song ... they played their hearts out and loved every minute of it ! Hopefully they will play it at all of their concerts ! A+
Back to this video after almost 2 months, having last watched it the night before my father unexpectedly died from a heart attack. The title of the song couldn´t be more appropriate...
GRUMPY 71 year OLD MAN EMBRACES THRASHER METAL BAND Last month we were watching the Gershwin Award which is present annually by the Library of Congress and broadcast by PBS and funded by viewers like you and T&D. The 2024 award celebrated the collaboration between Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Many guest celebs presented their covers of the extensive library of works written by John/Taupin. It was fun to see their reaction to another artist's take on their music. As the show progressed I got a Gardar alert of a ruggedly handsome mature man sitting in close vicinity to Elton.; just a few brief sightings as the cams panned the audience. A few performances later the host announced the next artists was the band Metallic. I knew the name from years ago but never imagined they'd still be preforming. The performance began and there his was! Turns out it's James Hetfield, lead singer and rhythm guitarist. I was immediately smitten. The performance of Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding was excellent. Over the past month I have listened to the extensive library of Metallica on UA-cam and Apple music. I'd recommend "Whisky in the Jar" an Irish pub song dating back to the 1700's and James Hetfield's composition "Nothing Else Matters". Both songs are available in "Metal" and acoustic versions by Metallica. In the past year Elton and Miley Cyrus have recorded a duet of "Nothing Else Matters" Elton says that James's composition is one of the most melodic songs he has ever recorded. Howard Stein has an interview video on UA-cam with Metallica, Elton John and Miley along with a separate video of the Metallic and Miley preforming the song. The last 3 years I have tried to listen to types of music I never considered when growing up, in college and all of my adult life until recently. Try it yourself, I bet you find something you enjoy, brightens your day. Maybe you'll be smitten by James Hetfield, or some other artist. People my age don't have too long to do this. Get any of the streaming music apps and start listening to your old favorites and add a new artist every day or so. Let me know how this works out for you.
Stunning. It cannot be done any better than this, and Elton lets Metallica know it with his unabashed and enthusiastic approval. Great job by an all-time great band!
Absolutely one of the best cover versions of these two songs (Funeral for a Friend and Love Lies Bleeding) that I have ever heard! Wow! Just wow! Metallica are amazing musicians to pull this off! Listening to this will put anyone in a good mood! Thank you Metallica! ❤️
It’s heartwarming to see the love for Metallica here. So many people want to tear them down all of the time. This cover was phenomenal and probably the best cover song I have ever heard from anyone.
Being a huge Metallica fan it took me over a week to watch this because I couldn’t imagine them doing a Elton John song well. I was wrong!! It was awesome!!
I keep coming back to this. This one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. It's wild to think about how Metallica linked with Elton John like this. For Years my music library would rotate between Metallica and Elton John. Two totally different styles of music, but there's something about both artist's that coincide's with another. It's not about how technically good you are in the song business. It's about the songs and how they can fill your soul.
I think that audience was at first a little uncertain how Metallica could pull off an EJ song. They shocked them. What a great performance by these guys for a very underrated song by EJ.
I saw Metallica in 1984 in Milan and one of my friend said perfectly "They will be the Zeppelin of our generation ". But Metallica are the Zeppelin of the 80's, the 90's, all the next and the actual generation. The greatest rock band of all times...period.
Thats awesome. It was probably 1988 when I said the same thing to friends and they laughed at me when I said Metallica is our Led Zeppelin. They also laughed at me when I said id be listening to Metallica when Im 40... Im 51 today and still the same die hard fan.
What money do you think they’ll possibly make from this. It obviously doesnt belong to them and they didnt even upload it. They’re averaging max 50k views for one day of viewing.
One of the best metal bands in the world is DEFINITELY the best cover band to ever exist! no questions. ridiculous how they never miss with their covers.
…And that Dodge Dart is gone forever, but in England “Love Lies Bleeding” is simply a flower that can keep cranking out tiny red blossoms until it falls over, you see. 👌

My good guess is we have Lars to thank for a lot of that.
I know Davey Johnstone must of had much influence on this song,, and Melltalica🤘
Honestly I have never been a Metallica fan (but have had respect for their talent.). Their cover of what is Elton and Bernie’s hardest/rocking song was absolutely spot on. Loved it!!!!
The lovefest between Elton John and Metallica continues and I am 100% here for it
Best comment 💯😁
This band has such an extremely unique and characteristic sound, that they make any music they play, from basically any style, sound like their own. I’m sure that at this point they could cover Bob Marley and make it seem like a new single they are presenting
Seeing Elton rocking to them, saying amazing in the end, says it all
I’m 71 years old and I love this!
I' m 67 and I agree!😊
me too!
I'm 66 and I loved it!
I'm only 55 and love that you old farts love this stuff! 😝🤘😝
I've seen these guys four times, first in '86, then in '91, then in '91 (haha, first New York then L.A.), then in '96.
Well, well... anyone expecting anything less than this!?!?!
Spectacular rendition ! METALLICA always delivers
Can we all agree we actually like the snare sound? Its perfect!
I think Lars is in the unusual position of having both the best and worst drum sound on a metal record (The Black album drums and snare especially are monstrous and then St Anger is the absolute opposite, which was the point but we all wish it hadn't been)
Lars is the weak link.
@@johncope1511Your mamma is the weak link
@@kimrasmussen8352 and still a better drummer than Lars.
@@johncope1511 Your are right , thats why she have 400 million dollars in bank vault in your trailer park ✌️ ….wait that is not her …🙈 thats Lars 🎶
I am a metal dude to the core.. but I absolutely love music to its core and I have to say this is quite epic. I'll have another beer please..
MIND BLOWN😱
How do they do it, perform perfection with flawless playing.
Metallica is so damn amazing, I'm so lucky to of been born in this era. Thank you metallica forever✌️
I agree 100% I was alive while Metallica walked the earth.
Every time I see Greeny still play the big events, the big stages, I smile for Gary and Peter.
I think thats what Kirk wants too... well said.
50 plus years and it still rides my flesh!
Mine too, goosebumps all the way through
I can’t stop watching this performance! It just fu**ing rocks!❤
They OWNED that whole show. I honestly can't even remember who else performed.
His ESP snakebyte is getting that aged white cream colour to it. Looks awesome
I believe this isn’t his normal white snakebyte, this maybe a cream version.
It's a off white color James wanted that color from factory
@@phantom_of_the_pines what I mean is, while James may have wanted that off, the off white colour he now has, has that aged look to it.
It looks aged naturally. If you notice the cut-out it's darker and the headstock area is lighter. That happens naturally. I have a ESP Edwards Eclipse that I bought Arctic White. 8 years later now it looks between cream and off-white. It's normal for guitars with white paint.
I also realized this
This was the best cover I have ever heard, Metallica always delivers.
Im 51.
Peace bro.
Just about the coolest cover I've ever seen. Beautiful.
Metallica is so raw and so heavy. They are on such a large scale. Favorite band ever
I've got chills! That was in my opinion the greatest cover of any song of all time. Amazing. Bravo Metallica!🤘
my oh my these metal heads showed some real LOVE for this fine song ... they played their hearts out and loved every minute of it ! Hopefully they will play it at all of their concerts ! A+
They killed this! Amazing version of an amazing song!
Back to this video after almost 2 months, having last watched it the night before my father unexpectedly died from a heart attack. The title of the song couldn´t be more appropriate...
GRUMPY 71 year OLD MAN EMBRACES THRASHER METAL BAND
Last month we were watching the Gershwin Award which is present annually by the Library of Congress and broadcast by PBS and funded by viewers like you and T&D.
Holy sh*t...WOW. Freakin AMAZING performance ...just wow.
James’s voice is getting better with age! ! Is it the cigars!? I don’t care, may you live forever Papa Het❤️🤘
No, he has been smoking cigars for a long time
That jam at the 7:30 mark sounded fucking awesome, the way James was picking the strings just topped it right off.
I've watched this 6X already and just love it! Very energizing.
Haha yeh think I’m upto around 15 😂
So good!!! Only Metallica could give a Mercyful Fate vibe to one of Elton John's greatest songs! Awesomeness
It's been on repeat for sure, not sure how many I'm up to at this point haha. So good!
I was there! it was amazing n it’s living rent free in my head since ❤ they absolutely killed it
@helenehaviland966 What was the audience reaction at the beginning of the song and at the end?
It’s heartwarming to see the love for Metallica here. So many people want to tear them down all of the time. This cover was phenomenal and probably the best cover song I have ever heard from anyone.
Seven minutes and fifty-six seconds of pure joy. Wow.
I agree brother
This has always been one of my favorite Elton John songs and Metallica's cover was simply awesome!
The undistputed kings at this point
Thats awesome. It was probably 1988 when I said the same thing to friends and they laughed at me when I said Metallica is our Led Zeppelin. They also laughed at me when I said id be listening to Metallica when Im 40... Im 51 today and still the same die hard fan.
Exactly
They should release this as a single and donate the money to one of eltons charities
There’s definitely an AIDS charity out there they can donate to
Shut up
This!
I agree
What money do you think they’ll possibly make from this. It obviously doesnt belong to them and they didnt even upload it. They’re averaging max 50k views for one day of viewing.
This seriously blew me away! So many great performers that night, but I nearly flew off my sofa when Metallica started up!
This is an amazing version of my favorite Elton John song. If they put this on Apple Music, I will happily buy a copy.
What a time to be alive - Elton John fan boying out to Metallica covering him, and it jams. Much respect all around.
Never been a huge Metallica fan but, this is absolutely perfect. There does not exist a better tribute and cover to this music and song. Not possible.
One of the best metal bands in the world is DEFINITELY the best cover band to ever exist! no questions. ridiculous how they never miss with their covers.
What a great version of an iconic song done by an iconic band.
I rolled my brother's '65 Dodge Dart while listening to this song back in 1974...and yet I still love it! Metallica just slayed with this one.
…And that Dodge Dart is gone forever, but in England “Love Lies Bleeding” is simply a flower that can keep cranking out tiny red blossoms until it falls over, you see. 👌
It's amazing that after all these years Metallica still has so much energy and can play anything
