1981…no internet, no cell phones, no social media, no autotune…wow, do I miss this time!
Who's watching in 2024 🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸
I am, amazing!
still magical after all these years!
For 30 yrs
Right here!!
Frigging love this song!!!
AWESOME! 🤘
Yes!! Remembering those high school days! Great times, great music!!😁👍🏽🤣🎶🎶🥁🎸🎤🎹
We had no idea that we were living in the golden age of music back then. A real concert with real talented performers in their prime. No auto tune, no backing tracks, no douche in front of you holding up a smartphone. Just great songs, pure rock and pure talent at its finest. Good times!
You’re right on with that. I’m 51 and feel I grew up in the best of times
And no mobiles blocking your view
Touche ..my friend of the 80s ..took the exact words outta my mouth..long live the last of the boomers..( class of 81) best of times!
When I went and saw Journey with Toto the only complaint was the phones. It was such a good concert.
Amen 👏
A legendary band at the top of their game. This is why more than 40 years later we still listen as though it’s the first time.
Yup! Just like a Journey virgin!
Being a teenager, hanging out at the mall, Journey blasting from everyone's cars, the whole future in front of us. Did we know how good we had it? It's mind-blowing how time flies and mysterious life is
I'm 18, I love Journey, most of the time I blast their songs! 🤘
well put!!!!!!!
Just saw them (again) 2/2/22 in Pittsburgh Pa. Missed Steve BUT it STILL was a blast from the past in the GREATEST time to be a KID....The 80's!!!
For real, it's so bittersweet.... we spend so much time when we're young looking forward to getting older and time seems to go by so slow and then as we get older time goes by faster and we want to go back...
@@marmoa yep I was born in 79...
53 years old and remembering buying this album when it came out. Best era of music was growing up in the 70's and 80's.
I’m 11 years old I love the 80s music it’s the best type of music😍🥰
No question! My God!
It didn't matter what musical genre you pledged your loyalty to.... Escape was seen in almost everyone's collection no matter what
90s were great too
@@ApriliaRacer14 Agreed. I am getting a new appreciate for the 90's and how much rock and roll was on the radio and good music produced in that era. Once we hit 2000, it went downhill fast.
The outro solo is literally the best thing I have ever heard in my 47 years.
It's magical.
That’s what happens when you put the song first, such an underrated guitarist for sure!
@msouza94 Neal is not underrated, you're funny!! 😅😅😅😅😅😅
@@DonCummins-kf3eoRegarded as one of the best ever!
The best part of it is the awesome bass line!
This whole concert was just perfect. Oh, the eighties, we miss you! Steve Perry, the greatest voice in rock history!
Heck Yes!!
One of my very best memories!!!
Man, I so wish I had been at that concert! I actually never got to see Journey in concert, ever. So sad! 😢I do really miss the 80s!
We made the 80 s rock
-definetly !- 🔥 🤘 💯
Paul Rodgers from Bad Co has him beat hands down.
Steve Perry’s face when he hits those high notes . Doesn’t even look like he’s trying . His face is so relaxed . He makes it seem so easy . This man is phenomenal .
I've been saying that for decades. He sings those high notes as if it's nothing! Hits them perfectly too. What a phenomenal voice.
@@maranderson7945 imagine what he could have done when he was truly feeling it!! Wow!!
Not to mention his patella! He has a very relaxed patella...
@Liberty AboveAllElse He's also got a very relaxed spleen...
That's the key to hitting those high notes with ease.
Damn this song makes me miss my childhood back in the 80's... What a time to be a teenager!!!! We got to grow up to music like this.
pyroman6000 yep, pop the Escape casette in and kick it with your buddies.
pyroman6000 Thank God!
Exactly right. Everything was better in the 80s. I feel sorry for my kids that they have to grow up with political correctness and garbage music on the radio.
Tim tidball, I still have that tape, dont play it anymore, but still own it.
back when we all had great songs and real music, what is out there now, vulgar rap which is so dam disgusting, and gay hip hop talent found on tv shows..the voice..all of this shit is a joke.
this is one of the greatest performances in rock history in my opinion 😮💨✋🏽
Amazing. This entire concert....Mother, Father is more than incredible
almost super natural yep beyond belief
Neal nailed the shit out of it. Steve was all over it as well!
It’s great but on this tour there are several other shows where Steve obliterates this performance
Awesome concert!
This has to be one of the most underrated Journey songs there is. I get why the other songs from this album were bigger hits, but this is such a jam!
This song was HUGE then
It was one that I often overlooked until I went and saw them. It changed me
It’s one of my favorite Journey tunes and they absolutely slay it here
I love this song
Who's still here in 2020? Old lady (57) that lived this era and still love this music. Nothing compares.
Old man (62) who saw this and ROR concerts in the ‘80’s. Still fresh!!! Perry was unreal!
Shussssh 😆 rocking grannys its why we look so good haha
59 and still love me some Steve Perry and Journey and I'm ready to make out with Lisa Diserio (sounds Italian and she's probably a hottie) after listening to some Stone in Love 😍
@@johns.4331 Old lady that just knows good music when I hear it! LOL. Saw them - best concert ever! (Even though I've literally seen 100's of concerts. Steve had a God-given voice. Very rare!
@ Lisa Diserio I'm 58 and I can tell by your comments that you're still a fox!!♥️
Steve hits B and G4s like most people whisper a name. The character to his voice and tone will never be heard again. This is one of the most gifted singers in all of recorded music history period. The technical expertise live however is second to none. The quality product he put out night after night for 13 years of constant touring will never be matched ever. Simply The Voice.
You notice they are all having fun!!!
Well said 👊
___----::::;'''¿¿¿¿???¡¡¿
I've tried to hit those notes. It hurts.
You misspelled Paul Rodgers lol I think Steve should get stem cell treatments for his throat and work back up to it. It's the configuration of the parts that make the final instrument - nobody can sound like Steve even if they work forever because only Steve has Steve's throat. Ozzy is doing a LOT better now, maybe we can get back the tones. I am not being an ass, I want this back selfishly for me, new music played on a one of a kind instrument that can maybe now be fixed and polished back up.
Journey is on a different level. Anyone who enjoys music, enjoys Journey.
Yes 👍 💯
1970's and 1980's were the absolute best. Give anything to go back.
I agree.
Me too.
@@rscarf1.
Go back?? I never left!
Loved the 70s when I grew up in NJ. Different times. The 80s were great except for the nuwave music and hair bands. I loved the 90s too when I was young adult. Music has changed so much since those 3 decades.
This is some of Neal's best lead guitar work, so melodic
Agreed. Stellar.
Neal is the best melodic shredder of all time. Anyone can play fast. Few can play fast and melodic. The only other guitarist that I put anywhere near him is "Spyder" Neil Geraldo. Exquisitely fast but precise, perfect riffs for their songs.
@@doctordetroit4339 Agreed, Neil Geraldo is superb too
Lo que me gusta de S.P es q el escribio todas sus canciones q hasta hoy se escucha, genio
@@doctordetroit4339 I would add Steve Lukather and Vito Bratta to that list. Tasteful shredding.
Neal is so underrated one of the best guitarist there is ..
Plays WAY too much live.
Butterlevi he's num. 2 for me, behind David Gilmore.
Best melodic guitar solos not annoying
His guitar tone is so great as well
Turns me on still
Whenever I hear this song all I have to do is close my eyes and it all just comes flooding back into my mind. All of the absolute best times I ever had while growing up. Close my eyes and I can see it all. It plays like a movie in my mind. I see it, hear it, feel it and love it.
that's so cool!
Yep. Walking around with my boyfriend at the football games. Listening to Journey Escape uptown in the hardware store parking lot with everyone else while they cruised our small town two blocks. Waving at the cops wondering if they knew who had beer and who didn't. 😁 I suddenly miss my first boyfriend!
I can do relate to what you mean ✌️😎🥳
When I graduated in 1981 I bought a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am. When my dad drove me to the car lot to pick up the trans Am I had brought with me a Journey cassette tape. As I drove my trans Am off the lot I plugged in my journey tape and stoned in love was playing. Life was good

Holy crap. Listening this title the first time.. Blown away! I'm 34 years old and I got chills.. What legends!
Easily one of their best songs. Underrated too. Steve hits all the notes effortlessly. So smooth. Band was at their peak here.
Yep!
Saw it live at this time .. blew me away fucking aye Neil !!!
Personally my favorite song by them
Yes
This IS my favorite Journey song period. And this live performance is amazing !
No pyrotechnics, no matching wardrobes, no backup singers....Journey just showed up singing, writing and playing. And we love them for it. The best of the best. 💟
That is one cool 😎 rock band. Steve can sing 🎤 🎸 🎶 🎹 🎧
This was at the Houston Summit - man so long ago smh

There are so many amazing things about Journey but we can agree that the best thing about them is: no autotune, no programming, just talented, in your face music from 5 legends
Wow, musicians who can actually write, sing and play in the studio and then back it up live. What a great concept.
I am the parent of two millenial adults who grew up with a first class education in classic rock. One of them, my son, is infact a professional musician. Neither of them have any love for what passes as music among their peers.
We talk about bands like Journey the way other people talk about sports!
@@jtoland2333 You raised those kids to be fine citizens. Props to you.

The Sze Progression, True that!
Missed not one note. Amazing!
The older I get, the more I appreciate Steve Perry as a singer. He was phenomenal back then. Never liked him much as a teenager. Now I regard him as one of the all-time greats!
Same here
Same story, too. Only with age did I begin to appreciate how talented the band really is. After seeing their 50th anniversary concert last year, to a packed house mind you, I realized not many bands could put on a 3 hour show of literally hit after hit.
I've NEVER heard a man in my 47 years have a voice as good as Steve's. I really don't care what anyone says. Steve to me has the best voice in all of rock and roll.
An era where technology didn’t dictate our lives what an incredible thing to have experienced The Great 80s
God I would give anything to travel back in time to this concert. Seeing Steve Perry, the best rock singer in history, live in his prime would be a dream come true.
I completely agree 100%
I was lucky enough to see them 12 times in the early 80s. I definitely remember this tour vividly. Perry had a voice like God and Neal Schon was... mmmm. Good times.
Saw them twice in KC bin the early eighties n they were fantastic and sounded like their albums 😁🥰
At least we were lucky enough to witness the greatest music live on stage. They truly change my life
I am so with you. I was on the younger side and my Dad would not let me go to concerts. For the Frontiers tour they came close enough that I snuck out of my best friend's window when I was 13 and rode with her neighbor and his girlfriend we didn't get to the arena in time. Looking back I was very lucky I made it without anything happening to me. Her neighbor was much more interested in partying than the concert and got so drunk and high I had to drive home. I'm 5'2" now, I barely could reach the pedals.
Very underrated song and one of Journeys best. Steve Perry is a legend. No computers to filter his voice. No twerking like a wild animal on stage. Good old fashion REAL singing without the drama.
You are right on. 👍 without a doubt
Rolie was better...sorry
TRUTH!!!!!!
Amazing - this is what live performance is supposed to be. Wish I’d seen them back in the day.
Yeah I don't think I want to see Steve Perry "twerking" lol... I'm not sure why you would even say something like that with regard to Journey! Doesn't really apply...
This album reached number 1 on the U.S Billboards. It had THREE top ten songs...Don't Stop Believing...Who's Crying Now...Open Arms. One of the most successful rock albums of all time!
The real Journey .who is here to listen to real talent
Steve Perry 🥰
Miss those days, there will never be another journey from the 80s👍
The bass line in this song near the end is so underrated. They should have given Ross a little love in the video too.
They literally tossed him to the side.
It really is. I play this on bass in a cover band and it's one of my favorites we do. How he hits notes just before the beat in the verse really propel the song. Then in the solos he does the main riff but up a fifth, which adds a really cool tension. So many guitar rock bassists just drone on the root because the guitars are so powerful and that's all they feel they can do, but Ross shows how you can keep it interesting and break through the mix.
@@kewkabe That’s nice to hear from somebody that knows. I have no music ability at all, but I could tell that bass line was special way back when I had the album on cassette. Some songs get weak towards the end, but this one has that powerful bass hook that really keeps me listening until the song fades out.
It's like there isn't a weak link in the band.
He was hitting those chords so hard when Perry came around him up front when the camera panned them, Im suprised Ross didnt rip the strings off that bass.
I was there! This was my first concert. ;) They played with Loverboy. I forgot how great they sounded LIVE!!! 😘😘😘
Same here (was there, not first - that was Cheap Trick). Friend's dad drove us down from Jersey Village. Still vividly recall the concert, and how they were throwing out MTV t-shirts before the concert began (MTV hadn't hit us yet).
This was Live in Houston. Lover boy did not open for them. Bryan Adams just released Cuts Like a Knife and he opened for them and kicked their ass.
Scott Koepplin are you sure?
Scott Koepplin From Escape Tour Wikipedia: "The 8 1⁄2-month tour took Journey through Japan and North America. Point Blank, Billy Squier, the Greg Kihn Bandand Loverboy were the opening acts during the tour." Maybe you're thinking of another tour? :)
Cuts Like A Knife was released in 1983, so no, Bryan Adams could not have been touring to support that album.
Im 57 too and Steve Perry has one of the best voices ever.
Journey is the best of the best, and I've been a loyal fan and have loved them all since 1978. Steve Perry is such a powerhouse singer, and I love his beautiful voice so much. He's one in a million.
Neal Schoen isn't too shabby on the guitar. Believe he played with Santana as a teenager
No Autotune, no backing track, and it sounds perfect.
Dang never really thought about how good the music was back then we had so many great singers & bands they were all great .There so many talented artists it seemed like everytime u turn the radio on there was always a good song playing when they were on tour you just saw the band on stage not like the crap that out there now .Were did the yrs go?
Not true. Steve Perry had the original version of autotune installed in his vocal chords and ears. Back then it was known as analog talent.
Steve Perry can sing period
Perry has to be one of the best rock singers of all time.
Certainly among the very best. Steve Perry, Brad Delp, Anne Wilson, Pat Benetar, etc. all in the top tier of the craft.
Tim R he sure is!
Brad Delp was good in the studio but average live IMHO. Steve Perry was as good live (or better) than he was in the studio.
I would add David Draiman and Freddie Mercury to this list as well, along with a few others.
Heath Weber I'm glad you included Ann Wilson in the list. Her and Steve are the best 80's rock stars in my opinion. I would love hearing them sing a duet together.

Absolutely priceless memories, bet the youth of today will say back in the day, but it really was a great time for proper music with proper musicians, Steve Perry sang like an angel and nobody then or now comes close, so happy I was around in this era
Journey means so much more to me than just great music...I can recall when "Infinity" was first released in 1978, I was an awkward teen of 13....hated school, was bullied relentlessly...and can remember coming home from school, putting this album on my turntable and just listening over and over and over.....made my world a much better place. I saw Journey live several times in the early 80s and was lucky enough to meet them at the hotel after the show too! Will always love them!! 😍😍

Tired of people bashing music today. Yes, Steve has a phenomenal voice. But there are so many talented vocalist even today. Give them some fucking respect. They’re just doing their thing in a different age.
This is simply the greatest song Journey ever wrote, recorded and performed. This was recorded in 1981. Back then, it was nearly impossible to replicate your studio sound live. Steely Dan famously broke up and stopped touring for 12 years which allowed technology to catch up to their sound and enabled them to take it mobile again in 1993. But, this Houston performance here by Journey (and it's available as an album) is the rare performance of this era of a band at the height of its prowess, cleanly and perfectly replicating their studio sound in concert.
Agreed. I'm amazed at how all the guitars sound like they're right off the album. They clearly had a team who knew what they were doing.
See it the other way round: studio sound was recorded without many technological embellishments, so when played back live is identical :)
after all classic rock 'n roll sound is simple and straight (voice+guitar+bass+drums)
They did😁
The only other band I've ever heard that sounded this good live is Halestorm.
Although I'm not this band's biggest fan, they did write some songs that were part of the soundtrack of my youth. A couple of things that I notice here. First, everyone seems to be wireless. Given that the technology was less than 5 years old at the time, it's remarkable how well the band sounds. Second, Steve Smith, probably the most talented musician in this band, but still a ways away from his best, is already showing signs of greatness.
A note about sounding like the record. I'm a huge Rush fan, and part of the allure seeing that band live was to see if they could play those complex arrangements well on stage. But I was more impressed with bands like U2 (who were just staring to take off at the time) whose live sound was vastly superior to their records'.
The mix on this live record is absolutely bonkers!
About as perfect as it can get
the song always gives me chills the way good rock and roll should
Absolutely stunning voice...there will never be another like Steve.
That guitar solo is one of my all time favorites. Great fuckin job!!!!

Holy shit...better than the album version by far. They were so on.
No, not really
Steve Perry's voice is so effortless and Neal's guitar playing is as spot on today as it was then.
It should be he's had 30 more years of experience. Lol
I think that of all Journey tours.......the Escape Tour was the best.....super!
This has to best one of the best live performances of Journey... Not sure if they ever realized how they complimented each others talent... Steve, Jonathan and Neal rocked and their challenges made them as creative as they were... Phenomenal.. I don't know if they will ever realize the impact they made to music...

I'm 63 and they have been a huge part of my life since I was 14 !!! Love them !
Just turned 64. Saw them in 83! Just incredible!
59 and I saw them 3 times!!I love this song!!
Been listening to JOURNEY since 1975. Always uh great band. Along with with RUSH, KISS & VAN HALEN, JOURNEY was my kid in the1970's soundtrack. Steve Perry joined during INFINITY. I dunno what happened to Bob Fleishman, original lead vocalist, but Steve Perry comes into Journey while I was in H.S. & just BLOWS THE DOORS OFF 🚪!! on vocals during INFINITY. Saw the band live at Comiskey Park in 1979. Incredible performance.
At 11yrs old I feel in love with Journey and at that age I didn't know how much I would still love them at the age of 55yrs old. Legends
Yep. First saw them in 1983 on their Escape tour in New Orleans but I was 15, so you were a little late to the party since we're the same age!😄
Wow, just wow. Best outro and bassline ever! I miss those days. 64 years old, the 80s were amazing!
56... I'm with ya. Kids these days😮😅
They just don't make real music anymore. I wish I could time travel back to the 80's.
@@NoSleep420 that outro and bass are incredible!
We are the lucky ones😉
Those crazy nights
I do remember
in my youth
I do recall
Those were the best times
Most of all
🎶💙🎶💙🎶💙🎶
Totally underrated lead guitar put down some of the best riffs ever. Amazing guitarist!
Neil Schon absolutely rips and the sound of that Les Paul through what is likely several Marshall stacks is utterly killer!!!
The absolute BEST version of Journey EVER !!!! Man I miss these guys !!!
Neal Schon is an AWESOME guitarist! He can riff in a way that just sweeps you along with him. And of course, Steve Perry's vocals are unbelievable. I just wish I could have seen them live back in the late 70's and early 80's. Awesome stuff.
👍❤️
KWAGE. They were great. Saw JOURNEY with STEVE PERRY in 1979. COMISKEY PARK. Amazin & incredible. Worth & every cent. 🎟 🎫 Tickets for that show didn't run 10 dollars.
If only we could go back in time...you would have loved it. One of my favorite groups. Saw them 3 times in Pittsburgh, once in Ohio. Great memories.
His guitar tone is so freakin polished!
Since no one else has commented on Ross Valory's bass playing, I thought I would. Listen to what he's doing as Neal takes that ripping solo at the end, just great melodic parts and flowing perfectly. Much respect. Great tune of course, takes me back to summer bush parties and smoking weed outside homeroom, in an area that couldn't easily be seen...
Steve Berberovic amazing!
This line up is arguably one of the best grouping of musicians of the era.
Steve Berberovic I always comment about Ross. He’s one of the backbone players of journey and is an unsung hero!!! I love his playing and wish more people would give him and the other Steve some damn credit! Thanks for your comment
The bass line in this is song is in my top 3 favorite in a song list... to me it's like sweet cream
And to think Perry kicked that rhythm section out! Unbelievable!
Neal's grin while Steve is talking at the beginning! They sounded sooo good live. Just turned 60 and I listen to Steve Perry every day.
Love the bass line and how it switches during the leads. Stone in Love!!!
I can tell this is still one of Neal's favorite songs to play live! Chance for him to shred!
I will never get tired of watching this amount of talent. No garage band, auto tune, just bad ass perfection.
In the heat with a blue jean girl!!!!
Ohhh I remember these days!! Best days of our lives.
Wow! Wish I had had a chance to go to a Journey concert back then. Talk about a spiritual experience 👍😆 I think that would have been it❤️
Brilliant
