I can't thank you enough for this molding head video. I have a ShopSmith molder head and five sets of knives. I did not know about ShopSmith not providing this product and knife sets. Also, a different manufacture was involved now and they use different types of knives.

    Great quick, short video.
Interesting set up and noticed that you had to use the “old school” ShopSmith Toolbox.

Scott, I have the old style molder head that came with my Mark 7 12+ years ago. What an ingenious design! I also have a Sears Craftsman molder head that came with my 20+ year old used Shopsmith Mark 510. Unfortunately, I have not used either molder head. I guess I have been focused on other projects and don't think of what I can do with these molder heads. I look forward to a future video on using the molder heads. A great video with good information in such a short time frame! Thanks!

Back in the '60s I worked in a tool shop that made cutting tools for industry. One of them was a cutter we sold to Pratt Whitney, Lycoming, Aerojet General etc which they used in the aerospace industry. It looked exactly like that! It had indexable inserts that could be rotated to expose different profiles, and a chip breaker since the carbide blades were used on steel. A trip down memory lane.

Hi Scott, I just watched a 1960 episode of Make Room For Daddy called Danny the Handyman. He had to make a doghouse. In the work area was two Shopsmith machines. Thanks

I saw that one. Not only gonna have two Mark V’s, but he also had a SawSmith radial arm saw! Magna really pulled out all the stops with that episode.

Good to see you talking about this, Scott. Enjoyed your presentation(s) at the Celebration of Woodworking. Nice job! Did Shopsmith sell 2 different thicknesses of cutters over the years? I thought that I heard or read that somewhere.

    • @MyGrowthRings

They offered the Corob cutter head for a short time, which takes a slight thicker knife.

They did, but you are better off using the shaper for those. I’ve decided that it’s finally time to talk about both the molder and the shaper. More to come.

I have. Molding of the style most easily made with this molding head has somewhat fallen out of style at the moment, so we don’t se it called into use all that often, that will change, as trends always cycle back.

How are the shop smith jointers. I can pick up a very nice well maintained SS for 500 that's coming with a lot of extras like bandsaw planer, disc sander and other accessories.. I know the price is right and I mainly want it for the lathe. But the jointers has me intrigued
