  • SHOP NOTES: Are the MicroJig "ZEROPLAY" Miter Stops a reasonable alternative to the venerable Shopsmith "T-Nut"? Oh, and sorry about all the errors! For example, the Shopsmith T-Nuts are currently $10.89 for a set of four. I think I was thinking about the price with shipping when I said they were $20-21.

I can't think of the last time I did a project without using the Shopsmith T-Nuts in some form or another. Once you have a few, you find all sorts of uses for them. I assume the Shopsmith T-Nut was introduced with the 505 table system? I guess that is where the mortising hold-down attachment was moved from the threaded hole on the 500 fence to the T-Nut and groove on top of the 505/510 fence. Could be a whole video on the history and many many uses.

That’s a good question, Tom. I’ll have to give it some thought, but it could be a 510 thing. BTW, the 510 predates the 505. The 505 was a stripped-down version, much like the Mark 1 was.

Another option for replacement or longer T slot bolts is to use carriage bolts, very inexpensive at e.g., Tractor Supply. File a bit of each side of the head, perhaps file down the square portion under the head. I have done this to make my own T slot bolts for my jigs. Most of my machines have slight differences in the dimensions of the slot so making my own T bolt allows me to get the best fit for a given machine.
    Dave.

I do intend to do just that, and will likely start them all over from scratch. Many of them have suffered from our numerous moves over the years, so I’ve been thinking about replacing them anyway. Scott.

I like the Shopsmith version. I have a drill press vice I have bolted to a piece of plywood. I then use touts to attach it to the table. Great for when you want to drill at odd angles or if you need to drill small parts.

At $7 a pop, it makes the Shopsmith T Nuts a bargain! My strategy is to add a 4 pack whenever I'm ordering something else, so I'm building up an assortment over time at a really low cost.

A comment unrelated to this video's topic but still Shopsmith related. I think I would have been out of luck if I hadn't had my Shopsmith. I'm currently working on a 12 segment per row vase where the segments are 22 degrees wide, leaving 8 degree holes or windows between segments. My problem was how to reliably keep 240 individual pieces concentric during glueup. I have a Segeasy plate that will locate the 12 segments of one row and needed a glue press with a rotating spindle that can hold a chuck or faceplate. It also needs a horizontal table that is both perpendicular to the spindle axis and does cannot move relative to the spindle axis when the spindle is moved vertically about 15 inches. I can hear the screams now. "You need a Shopsmith in drill press mode, dummy!" and that's exactly what I did. Lining up the center of my locating plate with the spindle was easy with a laser boresight. The other thing I did was to balance the power head with an air cylinder so I could easily move it vertically as my vessel grew from 1" to 20" tall as I added rows.

Nice. Years ago I took a commission to turn two Tiffany-inspired lamp shade molds, which were made from laminated segmented rings of basswood. The largest one was over 20” in diameter and coming up with a method to glue the segmented rings together was the toughest part of the project. The air cylinder is a clever idea. I’d love to see a picture of had you arranged that. Scott

Interesting take on the T Slots Scott. Like you, I prefer the Shopsmith brand as they are made for what I use. How many are you going to buy over a lifetime will depend on wear and usage. The longevity of them would tell a good story on the true cost over years of usage. Thanks as always.

    • @MyGrowthRings

That's true. I can't imagine the Shopsmith version ever needing to be replaced, but there are a couple scenarios where the MicroJig version might fail. Great point. Scott

I have been curious about some of the feather boards available from many sources but not willing to spend the money to find out if they would work. While watching this video, it occurred to me that many of these could be used by attaching a couple of Shopsmith Tee Nuts.

Could you use an elevator bolt with the flat head and file it down to fit in the T groove? If it works, it would be a cheap alternative, and they can be found at almost any hardware store.

    • @MyGrowthRings

Does the Shopsmith website have a section or catalogue that shows misc items like the T-Nuts? I am sure there are other such as this that would be very helpful if you could find them? I stumbled on then my accident, but have not been able to find them again.

Hi Scott, thank you for all your fantastic videos. I'm just starting out (in the UK) and have managed to get myself 2 shopsmiths with many extras and I'm very pleased with them.
Somewhat off topic of this video but I figure you will check this new video for comments!
The one thing that I am missing is the table saw upper blade protection and riving knife. The only UK supplier I have found sells them for £225 which I think is pretty steep! Do you know of any other brands that would work with this SS?
I do have the Mark V 500 ALLOY Lower Saw Guard Assembly so potentially could mount alternative upper protection to that?
    Any advice appreciated.
    Matt

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  3 місяці тому +1

Hey Matt. No, unfortunalty the SS is such a unique tool that no other off the shelf guards fit it. The guards for the 510/20 are the best, so those are the ones I would focus on finding. They do show up on eBay all the time, but I would also check shopsmith.com to see what a new set might cost.
