Love watching reactions to Neil Diamond. Notice his eyes constantly scan his audience so he sings directly to each individual. Great entertainer!
Great observation. He did that back in 1967 too, when I watched him do it in person. What an awesome entertainer he was. At the time, there was literally nobody else like him who could capture an audience like he did. Pure magic! A memory I will never forget.
He says in an interview that if you listen to his music “ it’s his life”. The man is a writing genius!
Thanks 😊
I could not agree with you more. He's my most favourite artist. I love him to bits.
Songwriter, singer and philosopher. Universal man.
The song is very autobiographical. He was born in Brooklyn and when he hit big, moved to LA. Out in LA, he decided to try acting. He auditioned for the role of comedian Lenny Bruce in a movie and he bombed his audition. He was so depressed about it that he started writing this song that day. It took him over four months to finish writing it. He’s said this was one of the hardest songs he ever wrote.
Aww thanks 😊
it was about his divorce and he went to therapy and the part of his therapy was to express himself at a chair in the room if it had someone sitting in it. That's why he mentions it in the song.
Im from Sri Lanka. I love Neil Diamond. This song is very emotional and a classic performance.
This man is just pure awesome
So beautiful
Neil Diamond is one of the best song writers there was...His music gave you chills...You felt every note and word...whether it be sad, moving, uplifting ....He just moved you....and not in a mushy girlly way he did it with a mans soul.
Thanks 😊
I love this live version! It is perfect. Another live version that was so beautiful and perfect was "Morningside". It is on his double CD of hits. When I heard him sing that song, for the first time, the audience was mesmerized. Yes, My Top Two Favorites but there are more by him. The guy is beautiful, I love his voice, and he is perfect!
A great singer-songwriter and gave great concerts.
Wow that was a very emotional performance
There is a movie about him and his life. He plays in it. I grew up on Neil Diamond.
"the jazz singer"
Neil Diamond is a great storyteller. He has written numerous classics (Solitary Man, Holly Holy, Brooklyn Roads, America, Beautiful Noise and many others). The chair in this song is a reference to the psychiatrist's chair. Diamond battled with this song for 6 months following a near-breakdown after divorce and a move from NY to LA. His failure to land the part of Lenny Bruce in the movie Lenny left him close to breaking point and Diamond was depressed. By his own admission, Diamond spent months in psychotherapy and this song explains wonderfully his thoughts and feelings at the time. The song underwent countless rewrites until it said exactly what he wanted it to say. Diamond no doubt felt so alone and so alienated that he must have felt that no-one was listening to his tortured cries - not even the (psycho-analyst's) chair.
Thanks 😊
Neil is one of a kind. He's a first rate lyricist, but his ability to craft world class melodies is nearly unmatched. His best work is extremely good indeed.
He is the master! Greatest , genius! What you feel is his ability to touch your heart and soul!
Wow what an emotional beautiful song
Thanks 😊

Amasing song iam I said Neil diamond
I love seeing others appreciate his music as he has been my fav since 1980 when I was 5 and my mom rented His movie The Jazz Singer. His music makes my heart happy. So glad you enjoyed his music. 💜
That's one of the things I like about his music, even his sad songs are full of hope and encouragement to hang in there.
In the 70's I was a teenager growing up in Zambia. Our social life revolved around parties based on our collective (including the parents!) record collections. Despite loving female vocals I came to really like Neil Diamond, his songs and his incredible voice. Getting mellow and wasted with a girl on my knee to Johnathon Livingston Seagull is a memory I will take to my grave.
He went to Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune, and was totally overwhelmed by it.
Another brilliant song on the same theme is "Limelight" by Rush.
His song America, he says his grandparents came to America. It's a great song about loveing America
More diamond!
Neil is a great singer/songwriter/storyteller who was very popular. I suggest listening to 'America', 'Sweet Caroline', and watch the musical movie he starred in, 'The Jazz Singer'. Great reaction!
Aww thanks 😊
This is very good but if u want a really good song that will make u cry ,listen to a story of my life by Neil diamond, bring tears and a very beautiful love song
I was fortunate enough to have heard Neil sing this song in person, back in 1967. What a concert... what an entertainer Neil Diamond was back then, when he was just 25 and I was just 17. He filled that auditorium in Lethbridge with so much love, so fast, that before we knew it 7,000 cig lighters were on fire and the whole place lit up with... well, just with love. It was an amazing experience. 10 years later I got to watch the Beach Boys perform at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, AB. Again... an absolute mind blower. But throughout my teens, although there were hundreds and hundreds of great singers out there, Neil Diamond and Cat Stevens were just unbeatable. Such beatiful memories for this older guy to take with me when I go back home. Thank you Neil!
I have an emotional bond with this song, like it could be about me. I'm 50, single, living alone, and sometimes I feel like nobody sees or hears me...sometimes, but not always.
I am a lady 55 hrs young living alone ~ God s time is the best ~ dear
You seemed surprised that he was playing guitar and singing at the same time. Doesn't anybody do that these days? Nice reaction.
Holly Holy by Neil Diamond plz
If you want to listen to a couple of his songs it's real upbeat and happy the two you most likely want to hear is Sweet Caroline and the second song is America.
I Neil Diamond, an interview called Neil Diamond, the late late show RTE Ireland. He explains when he wrote it and how he was feeling in this interview. He was depressed. Highly recommend watching it. It’s 24 minutes long
I saw him in concert and he sang this. Another song of his I love even more was just on one of his albums. It was called The Story of My Life. It is really, beautiful.
Thanks 😊
If this affected you, you should listen to his song "Brooklynn Roads," which helps give more context to his life growing up in New York.
Ouuu mai good
Neil is Jewish and was raised with a firm Torah teaching. He was premed when he decided music was what he was going to do. He's torn between worlds, identities, and lost somewhere in it all trying to find out who he is. That informs so much of these lyrics. "I AM" is the name of God in the Old Testament/Torah. This is found in Exodus 3:16. He is so lonely and he's crying "oh God" and feels like God's not there and not listening. About "the chair"... The therapists aren't helping him either- they leave him in loneliness too. He's so lonely and lost he feels empty and without existence except for his pain. When he sings "I'm not a man who likes to swear but I never cared for the sound of being alone," he's swearing because it's saying God isn't there, almost saying God doesn't exist. That's swearing to a man raised in a religious Jewish tradition taught to revere the name of God. It's very much like the Psalms where the Jews cry out to God when they feel abandoned and their enemies are about to defeat them. Those are known as Imprecatory Psalms, and this song is very much like those. But in the end he hasn't given up on his faith in God because as the song ends he continues to call out "I Am..." or Oh God over and over. This song is a cry to God from a heart filled with the despair of loneliness. Lyrically and musically it's gold!
This song reaches so deep into the listener's soul that I knew there had to be a more profound meaning behind it. Thank you for this interesting information.
I'm a longtime fan of Neil Diamond. ❤
My ex GF loved this song for some reason it must have resonated with her ,she sure had it rough, but she has a kind heart, miss her a lot.
I have known Neil since the 60's and had the opportunity to be commissioned to do his portrait in the 1980's which he hung in his home behind him being interviewed on 60 minutes. You need to hear Solitary Man. That will make you cry! River Deep Mountain High is awesome!
Thank you for your reaction Nneamaka! I would recommend Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show as his best!
Did you guys know, Neil wrote "Heartlight" after he saw the movie E.T.? The song is the movie.
Thanks 😊
Also in the same school choir!!
. . . " No , actually it is not " ... A question for you - just how exactly could it be if Neil was inspired to write it with Burton Bacharach and
... An over sensitive keypad there folks , as I was asking , just how exactly could
' Heartlight ' be IN the film if Neil and Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager were
inspired to write the song BY seeing the
film - ? ... Allow me one guess , are you an ' American ' ? . . .
Nice one
Thanks 😊
Do some more of his music.

If you want to hear the full great version of this song look up Neil Diamond I am I said BBC live concert and listen to that you'll hear the whole full song cuz it had quite a bit left on the end that he kind of cut he shortened it.
