You're right about Neil's voice. It's one of the most formidable voices in pop/rock music. I remember an article saying "a voice that should be classified as a deadly weapon". I hope you'll do some other reviews of his songs, he has a huge repertoire to choose from: Solitary Man, Brooklyn Roads, Soolaimon, Stones, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, Dry Your Eyes, Beautiful Noise, America, If I Don't See You Again, Pretty Amazing Grace, (OOO) Do I Wanna Be Yours, etc. With more than 130 million albums sold, he's one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever as well as a fantastic and charismatic performer.
This song is even more amazing when on a recording as it is more polished. This is my favorite song of his. My dad taught me to listen and identify voices of singers, but you are right, Neil's voice is iconic.
One of my Neil Diamond favorites is "Morningside" (able to view here on You Tube-) it is deeply emotional song and will invoke all the fibers in your body - it is a beautiful, meaningful, and very sad song which showed the very deeper side of Neil Diamond.
Please go down the Neil Diamond rabbit hole! My favorites of his are Love On the Rocks, America, I Am...I Said, Hello Again, Cracklin' Rosie, Forever In Blue Jeans, September Morn, Sweet Caroline, and of course You Don't Bring Me Flowers (duet with Barbra Streisand).
This song is about a cry for help. And the feeling of being lonely and lost all the while asking people to just listen to him. On why he was feeling so lost and lonely and did not even know why. The (Chair) represents his psychiatrist. who's supposed to be there to help and support him to deal with his fears. Only to fall on deaf ears. The reference of him likening himself to the Frog who dream of being a king and became one. Is how very successful he became as a singer/songwriter who had attain wealth fortune and fame. Still the feeling of emptiness and loneliness had a strong hold on him, and it never let him go. Leaving him lonely still. " I never cared for the sound of being alone."-Neil Diamond Great reaction to Americas greatest singer/songwriter who has over 100 top 40 hits to his name. That in itself is quite impressive...
Neil Diamond one of the most well like artist in the world. Not only did he sing, play guitar and write most of all his music, he wrote music for other bands. I would recommend many songs stated by other commenters , You will find some of his most prolific work on his Hot August Night Album (Live At The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles/1972). Two songs with emotional and well written stories expertly done and well worth a listen are "Morningside"; " Play Me"; if you like these two songs a listen to "Canta Libre" on the same album. On a sad note he is not in the best of heath these day so he is not doing shows any longer.
I grew up listening to Neil Diamond. One of my dad's favorites. Saw him in concert as a child two times. I still love him to this day. My dad is gone but I have those memories.
He has a few live videos from 1971 on BBC that are definitely worth checking out ☮️💜 He wrote most of his songs, several were #1 hits and wrote hits for several other singers, He’s sold over 100 million records. He only quit touring a few years ago when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease He’s 80 yrs old
Probably the greatest autobiographical songwriter there has ever been. Try Brooklyn Roads it's about his childhood in Brooklyn and of his later work the story of his life the epic Hell Yeah, the live version
One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "I Am, I Said" is almost an autobiography of his life & fame. He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. That song was later used in the movie Shrek & sung by Smash Mouth. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.
I just wanted to suggest that you look at the "Neil Diamond Talks About" (various videos) Especially "Neil Diamond Talks About "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" Then Plays It, Live 1971" the story behind 'the story' I believe you will be even more impressed. Good day to you and blessings "Holly Holy" Then Plays It (Live 1971), "Man of God" Then Plays It (Live 2008 UK), "Cracklin' Rosie" Then Plays It (Live 1971), His Classic First Hit "Solitary Man" Then Plays It
You should give Mean Mary,Sweet Jezebel a listen(she fights the devil and wins). Its different from literally anything you have heard. She is in her 30's and performing since she was 6.
Dang- he must’ve been in a bad place when he wrote this. Depression can really be all encompassing. He went from a frog to a king but the loneliness was still pervasive. Beautiful lyrics.
