You’re correct in your analysis. He left NY to audition for a movie, which he didn’t get. He had immersed himself into the true life character, Lenny Bruce, and it took a toll on him. The line “not even the chair, refers to the therapist he was seeing. My favorite Neil Diamond song.

I was privileged to see Neil in concert.
My favorite concert I have ever been too.
It was the only concert I have attended that no one left their seat!
No one left to use the bathroom or gets drinks.
Everyone was glued to their seats memorized by his stage presence his amazing songs and his beautiful voice.

Great song and I liked your reaction. This one has a meaning for me, I went to 8 different schools in different cities as a kid, and even as a metalhead, I would play this song bc I could connect with the starting over idea and the loneliness before you met new friends. Got in a lot of fights too as the new guy all the time. anyway, thanks for doing this one.

I have always thought this song was about him. Frog to a king=regular guy to famous singer. No one heard, not even the chair=being bowled over by the industry. Being alone=the isolation of stardom because of lunatic fans and photographers making your life miserable. That's my take, he was speaking on his own situation. Cece, I agree with your interpretation! You'll love Neil Diamond's "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show". He had 10 #1 hits, and is in the Songwriters and Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. In High School he was in Freshman Chorus and Choral Club, along with classmate Barbra Streisand. Now that was a chorus! 😁

Said he went to his son's fb game, they played hit after from all the big names, but it was just background noise...and then came Caroline and the whole stadium stood & began to sing _Sweet Caroline, bad, dum duh, dun..._ He included the vid, he wasnt exaggerating. 😀👍

His family and him will never be the same ." New York is his hometown but his home does not know him.He belongs to him!
