My older brother, Jeff [RIP] gave me a vinyl 45 rpm single of #CRACKLIN' ROSIE when I was 8 y/o. This was in 1972. Neil was 31. I was immediately smitten with Neil's rich baritone vocals ..but when I saw just how damn good looking he was, I was in love! He was my first crush. I began collecting his records, pictures, news articles, interviews, memorabilia, etc etc from that moment on.
I've seen Neil Diamond 22 times in concert. Never missed a tour starting from 1980 to July 26, 2017. All the shows were held at the Seattle Center Coliseum/Key Arena except for one, which was at the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, WA.
Neil's career spans 5+ decades ... 1966 ~ 2017. Beginning in 2016, Neil and his life long band [Damn near. Majority of his band members had been with Neil for 40+ years!] embarked on a world tour marking Neil's 50th anniversary in the business. He was wrapping up the tour here in the states in July of 2017 before heading to New Zealand and Australia to close out the last leg of the tour there when Neil was sadly diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Not sure how long Neil had been experiencing symptoms, but on the advice from his doctor, Neil had cancelled & refunded the shows in New Zealand and Australia. In his entire career, this was the 3rd time Neil had to cancel LIVE shows. The first time was back in the seventies when he collapsed on stage at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He had been experiencing numbness in his legs but chose to ignore it. When he collapsed, he was unable to move his legs. He underwent surgery, where the doctors removed a cancerous tumor from his lower spine. Neil had to learn how to walk again. I believe this is when #I AM .. I SAID started coming to life on paper. The second time, Neil lost his voice. He reimbursed everyone who had tickets for a couple cities. Of course, the Parkinson's diagnosis was the 3rd time.
Neil is a class act. A superb performer. A brilliant songwriter. There will never be another like him. With multiple personalities, young and old, Neil is sorely missed by millions of his fans all over the world.

Reminds me of my dad, he used to play Hot August Night and I, even as a rock lover, loved it because of my dad. I lost him in Dec 2022 aged 87, and this will make me cry for him. Wonderful music and I still remember the lyrics after decades. Amazing songwriting!

Home is my wife. Born in Boston, lived in San Francisco and suddenly no place felt like home.Through my twenties and early thirties just lost. My dad was raised by his grandfather and grandmother who immigrated to Boston from Poland in 1905. He (my dad) always said because he never knew his own father he was grateful to grandfather and grandmother for giving him identity, This song always brought a tear to my old man's eye...when my brothers and i would see it. Love Neil Diamond

I was nine when this came out and my older sister was a fan of his. She bought all his albums and I got to listen to them a lot, since she and I shared a bedroom until I was twelve. I loved his music, but this song took on a whole new meaning when I had to move to Texas for my senior year of high school after living in Virginia for five years. My dad was in the Air Force. I’ve never felt like I really fully belonged anywhere, although I’m pretty settled in after twenty three years back in California, where we lived when I was a kid (and where I became a Neil Diamond fan🥰).

One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "I Am, I Said" is one of my favorites. It is almost an autobiography of Neil's life. Other songs are "Cherry, Cherry", "Sweet Caroline", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Holly Holy", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", "Forever In Blue Jeans", "Longfellow Serenade", "Desirée", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" etc. He has sold more than 130 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable. Sadly he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2018.

There’s a video floating around UA-cam of an interview with Neil on the Irish Late, Late Show where he goes into the details of how this song came to be.
It was during a time of an existential crisis in Neil’s life of wondering what his place in the world was. Writing this song served as a catharsis for those strong emotions. It is a great interview. It shows Neil as the quiet, gentle man that he is. A man with the gift of putting into words and music the feelings we all have but often can’t express.
Some of my favorite songs of his are Play Me, Morningside, Pretty Amazing Grace, and Beautiful Noise.

The first time i heard this song it broke me. I finally felt like someone else in the world understood how lost, how lonely, how without a home i too felt. All these decades later i still feel the same way. I've lived all over the world. I have so many wonderful memories of wonderful people, different cultures, and friendship. But, i still feel like a man without a home, without a place in the world. This song is one i know in my heart and soul. It's beautiful! That's why it's a great song. Virtually everyone can relate to this song at some point in their life.

Neil Diamond is my favorite singer/songwriter. He is giving us a look into his psyche. No matter how famous he became. And all the millions of gold and platinum records he sold. All the sold-out concert halls and stadiums. The many variety television shows and movies he was in. He still had this feeling of loneliness that just wouldn't let go of him. "I Never Care for the Sound of Being Alone"-ND. When speaking to his therapist about this problem of emptiness and loneliness. Not even the therapist was listening to him (The Chair). Love your reaction to one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all times. Epic.

"The chair" refers to a form of healing therapy where one is simply speaking their feelings about what they're going through to an empty chair.
Neil had just gone through a divorce before his career landed him in L.A., and was having a very hard time adjusting.

I f you get the chance , the live album " Hot August Night " is a classic complete-gig live album . Glad to hear you have moved to Romania , sorry to hear you are no longer here in the UK . Our loss . If you get the chance , may I recommend Kris Kristofferson " To Beat The Devil " from his album " Me and Bobby McGee " . Dedicated to his friends , Johnny and June ( Cash ) . it is a song of love and critical thinking and never giving up on the things you know are true .To Beat The Devil ...

The Boston Red Sox baseball club and their fans adopted Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” as a sing-along in the middle of the 8th inning of every home game since 2002. By 2013, so called true fans got tired of the song and the “pink hats”, what they saw as Johnny-come-lately fans and those who came to Fenway Park for the experience rather than rooting on the ball club. Then 2013 and the marathon bombing happened. Boston officials did the unthinkable for a major city. Boston was locked down tight while authorities successfully hunted down the terrorists responsible for the attack. I live in Rhode Island and worked in Boston at that time. Afterwards, the first game played at the park was remarkable for two events. Given a microphone, superstar player David Ortiz would announce to the crowd in a nationally televised pregame ceremony that “This is our F* king city, and no one is going to dictate our freedom”. It was an incredible moment and one the FCC refused to fine Ortiz, the Red Sox or the television station for obscene language, suggesting in this case it was acceptable . At the same game, an older gentleman in a ball cap appeared at the box office. “I’m Neil Diamond and I need to sing my song tonight”. And in the middle of the 8th, he was escorted to the field and led the crowd in the singing of Sweet Caroline. The Red Sox, expected to be a mediocre team at best played their hearts out for Boston that year and would win the World Series. And I’ve never heard a disparaging word about Sweet Caroline since.

"They" say you can never go home again. Truth! I left England and lived in Germany for 4 years. Then I moved to the USA; firstly Alabama and then California. I've loved my 43 years in the USA but I regularly find myself longing for "home" but "home" doesn't exist any more. My grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles are all passed and my 6 siblings are scattered around the UK with their own children and grandchildren. Their lives have gone forward, as has mine but I long for a place and time that I can't have back.

I grew up in Los Angeles....you couldn't pay me to go back. I spent 22 years in the US Army, lived all over the US and even lived 6 years in Stuttgart Germany. My last job in the Army ended me up in South Central Pennsylvania......Amish Country as they call it. Probably as far away from my Los Angeles upbringing as you could imagine. I've now lived here over 15 years and find it hard to imagine living anywhere else. It's quiet....Peaceful. I want for nothing really.....and I feed my 10-15 head of deer in my backyard (along with the rest of animals in the area). Priorities change as we age. What I thought was important even 10 years ago is different today. Don't get me wrong....growing up in LA, in the 70s and 80s, was incredible. But....LA hasn't been my home for over 30 years. This is what I've missed in modern music.....The Singer/Songwriter....the Story Teller.....

What did any of that have to do with the song?

Ohhh, now I see you already reacted to this 1 month ago. So I'll watch that. Sorry I missed it the first time around!

I didn't think that it was one of his best performances. You should listen to the studio version of the song, it's much better.

Neil is talking about touring but , me being a solo sailor, at 64, i don't know what I would consider "home". Just visited my parents in N. Ga, USA 🇺🇸 where i grew up , it wasn't the same as when i grew up. My boat is my home. As Capt. Jack said, Chance ( my Pearl ) isn't just a boat. It's freedom. The world is my home. Forget Sweet Caroline. Neil did lots of wonderful thought provoking life songs in the 70s which were far superior - this is one of them and his personal favourite song he wrote.

Neil said in an interview that this song was written during his Los Angeles therapy sessions with his analyst. Basically, it is a song about his aspirations, his life plan, and who he was or wanted to be as a person and an artist.

It's about time for another Janis Joplin tune (a Neil contemporary). You'd enjoy "Maybe" from March 1969 on the Ed Sullivan TV show. Super soul back up band and Janis in full voice. You'll be surprised. Thanks again for the great reactions. P.S."A" I get MORE teary eyed than you on emotional songs. And "D" you are my seer when discussing your heart and mind feelings.Marv

This song becomes more and more difficult to listen to as I get older .
The chair was a reference to a therapist who might as well be an empty chair. Your deep understanding the core of a song and your empathy towards the singers and writers have been quite special.
I look forward to every reaction.

Suggest Sweet Caroline next. A huge hit, still being sung , for example, at every Boston Red Sox home game by the entire crowd.
