Not only was he a killer guitar player, but, he was one great human being. After overcoming an alcohol and drug addiction that plagued him for years, he finally got clean and sober. If someone came up to him after the show and said they were dealing with a drug or alcohol problem he would take them on his tour bus and sit and just talk with them. To me, that truly shows what kind of person he was.
He was a grand soul.
Indeed! I also heard rumor that he helped Jimi Hendrix’s fam out in the 80s by re-mastering many of his works and re-releasing them so they could benefit from the royalties. I guess Hendrix’s manager basically took it all and made sure his fam got nothing after his death. Don’t know if any or how much is true, but I wouldn’t be surprised. With all his own personal demons, his soul was pure!
Seems like there's 2 kinds of musicians out there; those in it for themselves, and those who've evolved to understand the impact their music has on their fans... and they're just like them. His actions remind me of those of Ronnie James Dio, another evolved soul. I remember a story about him that is like Stevie. He & his band had just finished a concert & were leaving on their bus, when Ronnie saw someone wearing a Dio t-shirt, sitting under a streetlight, looking forlorn. Dio had the bus stop, got off & asked what was going on; turns out the fan's car wouldn't start, he had no money to even call a tow truck or repair service, and he didn't know what to do. So, Ronnie took him back to the bus, called a repair service for him, fed him dinner, hung out & ultimately paid for the repair service's charges to fix the guy's car, so he could go home & tell his wife what had just happened. I love hearing stories like those, and I'm sure there's plenty of them about Stevie as well...
Bill Watson friend’s dad got to meet him and he said he was just a really humble down to earth guy. He definitely didn’t have the “I’m famous” attitude. He talked about overcoming his addictions.
Not a musician, but Chris Farley about once a week or so would go pick up a homeless person, take them out to a nice restaurant, then go put them in a five star hotel for the night while leaving them with a little spare cash. I heard it in a David Spade interview. He said Chris never mentioned it to anyone but Spade. He did it only for the purpose of trying to bring a little hope to a stranger, and wanted no credit for it.
Such absolute mastery . The world was robbed with his passing .

@paul Provenzano I was at Gregg's funeral. Saw Cher and so many celebs exit the service. I felt like crying but Gregg lived probably 35 yrs than a normal man of his "consumption". That gave me a little solace. It was almost like God himself let him stay to finish the game

I disagree. SRV is very technically perfect, very amazing. Jimi was more of a freestlyer. Both great in their own way.

When Stevie was playing he was testifying, giving the praise and laying his soul out and sharing his joy. RIP SRV.
gotta give props to his tight band. that rhythm section hangs on his every note and lands where he lands every single time.
The story is that there wasn't ever really a set list. They were just playing along with where ever SRV went that night in the moment. His band doesn't get enough credit.

I saw him at a college in NY shortly after his first album came out. I too had never heard him or of him, saw him cold for the first time and I was floored. 20 seconds into his first song, 'Testify', I swear I said this to myself, 'This is it, this is what it's all about'. I was never so gripped by music in my whole life, and still I've never seen anything like him except I became such an immediate fan of Stevie's I would have stalked him if I was rich, but I saw him every time I could when he came to NY.
He started playing big arenas, last time I saw him was at Madison Square Garden, and he was the man, but that show at the small venue before he became so famous, it was like personal or something, like he wanted to drill holes in my head with notes. Long live SRV!

Stevie's idol, other than his brother Jimmie, was the late Albert King. Mr. King said the only white son he ever had was Stevie Ray. High praise from one of the greats to the greatest! RIP, Stevie Ray.

The incredible part is he was really a mess at this period in time. I saw him before he was clean and I saw him after he was clean and he played with so much more deliberation without losing that amazing soul when he was clean. Truly truly beautiful
Yeah I remember the days when SRV would take a "cold shot" every morning...a shot of whiskey with a whole gram of cocaine dissolved in it. Dude's tolerance had 2 be thru the roof. Thank God he got clean before he passed. That's something he was so proud of man.

Did you see Stevie's grin when he came out of one extreme jam (4:39)and notices that base right there with him leading back into the song structure. That exchange between great musicians is the best music gets, in my opinion. That's when even the magician is struck by the illusion!

As I understand the history behind SRV’s version of this Hendrix song ... Stevie felt he couldn’t sing it as good as Hendrix (his main idol) ... and preferred to let his guitar “sing” ... so he (SRV) made it an instrumental ... or at least that’s how I heard it ...

Reminds me of when Pete Townsend was asked in an interview what he felt the first time he heard Hendrix play live. His remark was 'A hell of a lot pain, because I knew that no matter how much I practiced, I could never be that good'.
Its not just his hands and mind connected, look at his WHOLE BODY when he plays. His hands, his torso, his head, how he moves, his soul are all physically and mentally connected with his instrument to play as a single entity. I believe that's what makes him the GOAT! It's a flow state, where you almost try to remove your brain from the equation as it only slows you down to think about it. I've been playing for 22 years and I'll probably never hit his level of skill but I'm not trying to be him either, though he is definitely one of my top 3 influences.
Out of body experience. Some people think his playing actually helped his sobriety.

There have been many guitarists with crazy skills, but (to me) what makes Stevie unique is that he unfailingly employed his technical prowess to infuse his music with feeling and emotion, rather than to just shred. It is never "dry." And besides the expected mastery of pitch, rhythm, and dynamics, he could modulate his tone note by note...
When exceptional natural talent collides with obsessive dedication to practice, you get a Michael Jordan, Ricky Carmichel, or an SRV...
Peerless. Genuinely peerless in their generations. All we can do is admire slack-jawed and hope we live long enough to witness the next. Aliens, the lot of them.
Was fortunate enough to see SRV perform live in multiple different venues. Every show was slightly different and truly inspirational.
Watch the vid closely and you can see right around 4:37 he comes back to the stage....he even looks around and back at his band mates..... the cat was so in the zone he was gone.....in another level or something.... amazing. SRV does such a genuine and incredible tribute to Mr Hendrix every time he covers one of his originals....SRV keeps it real but always adds his own greazy funk....

Stevie doesn't even have to think when he is playing. To him it's just like breathing. The best!
This is the guitarist that can make every hair on my body stand up. A number of vocalists can do that to me, as well as some orchestral pieces, but only SRV can do that to me with his guitar.
This has always been my favorite Stevie song...and it's actually a Jimi song. So much of Stevie is him playing things Jimi played, that nobody else could play with the tone and musicality Jimi had, and in some cases making them more listenable the same way Jimi did with All Along the Watchtower.

This was the type of venues I would see him in Dallas 1st starting out or the outdoor Deep Elem section of Dallas and I was lucky enough to get to see him a lot and as he got bigger see the bigger venues from mid 80’s- early 90’s and Thankfully we have these videos of his concerts because no one would believe you without seeing them and his passion and being in that zone. Thanks for playing this his music will live on forever

I love the beginning of this video when they show a couple of people in the crowd. They have blank stares on their faces. When I first saw the vid I questioned why they looked like that while watching a god play but I realized that those faces are of people that were taken to a different place. They were taken to another dimension. SRV truly was not of this planet. So very special.

Watching your reaction and hearing Stevie again literally made me cry. I remember exactly where I was in my car (in Austin, the exact street/stoplight) when I heard on the radio that he had passed away. I felt like the whole town went into mourning for him, as we thought of him as our own. They played his songs all day and into the night that day. There is a reason there is a statue of him downtown in the park, as he is truly one of greatest Texans we've put forth in our time. What an extraordinary talent, he was truly touched by the Gods. And Jimi was one of his main influences, so I know that the covers he does of Jimi's songs meant the world to him. Thank you so much for sharing your love of him with us. :)

Saw him in the mid 1980s, 86 I'm guessing, during spring break concert at the beach in Texas, I think he open up for Triumph, there were several bands that week but SRV stood out by far, it was a "wow what was that" this particular concert was FREE, when he started there was around 1000 people when he finished there were people practically all the way back to water easy 10K, speechless

I grew up in Austin so I was lucky enough to see him live many times front row. It’s pure electric energy when he plays . He portrays his emotions thru his guitar like no one else I’ve ever seen or heard.
As good or better live than on his records . Not many bands can say that.
I even have a rare bootleg of him playing Antones blues club with Paul Ray & the Cobras from the 1976.
JiMi Hendrix and Lady Blues had a baby you know.And that child grew up to be a Mighty Mighty Blues man with his Ax in his hands, he became a Gift to the world known as the Incomparable STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, and the day he died all that knew him and his story cried, but he thought enough of us to leave a life time of music behind.#Live on STEVIE RAY

Had me in tears... SRV always reminds me of my late father who introduced me to him at a very young age. And out of all the vidioes I've grown up watching of Stevie Ray Vaughn I've never seen this one. Thank you for sharing, it brought back memories of my father when he was alive.
Living in Austin l saw Stevie many times. I sorta a took him for granted. I see these videos now and experience the loss of his death all over again. He was so great and such a humble person. I saw SRV the first time at The Bar on 6th St. in early 1982. He walked on to play the second set with Lou Ann Barton. Suffice to say I was blown away. Shortly after he recorded with David Bowie on Let's Dance and the rest was history.

That was the one show he found the tone everyone chases in with the blues and held it...………...most guitar players chase tone all their life but never find it long enough to hold it in check...…...SRV did that the entire concert.
This was live at the Elmo on Spadina in Toronto. I was there that night. It was fillmed for posterity by CityTV (Channel 57 / Cable 7 back then), and simulcast on FM station Chum 104. He put on an incredible performance. His performances of Voodoo Child (slight return) and Lenny that night had me scraping my jaw off of the floor. Watch the full performance if you can find it. I bought it on VHS when it came out, then on DVD. It's an amazing performance caught on video to be enjoyed by people for all-time even though Stevie is gone.

Awww man, I love the Stevie Ray reactions. He played with so much soul!!! I had a chance to see him back in the late 80s at Toads place in New Haven, CT, but passed on it thinking I would see him again if he came back around my way. It was not to be, and have regretted it ever since. When he got killed in his plane crash, I cried and not ashamed to say it. It’s amazing how certain things hit you. I missed out on a special individual.
Then I knew, how my mother felt when Elvis died. I was like 5 years old, we were in her car, and it came over the radio that he had passed away, and I remember my mom crying like a baby.

Another great. I was living in Tinley Park, Illinois. Saw him and Eric Clapton together and he died a day or 2 after we saw him. Very sad. So talented and to hear him and Clapton their guitars together was the best

Im big into sound quality and have a nice setup in my car. Tin Pan Alley one of my go to for a demo. I can crank it up all the way, close my eyes and I'm in the room where it was recorded. It's amazing.
Great job and you are fun to watch, you understand how music affects us! He is a true legend and always will be, everybody loved him!! While he is playing you can see him slowly but surely drift off into his Zone, not only in the genre of the Blues, but in all genres I consider him to be the best guitarist that's ever lived.

The soul transmitted through SRV’s playing and voice is unparalleled by any artists to date, especially in a world that can’t replicate it in a live performance. At almost all concerts, when a band or musician does something fantastic the crowd goes wild. You notice that during SRV's performances there is not a sound from crowd because they are all in total awe of what they are experiencing.
I'm a 65 year old lady, saw him once with BB, once with Jeff Beck, & then at a blues festival, freaking amazing, I am so blessed to have seen this man live. Rest in Peace Stevie, we love you! Thank you for all u shared with us

I'm 56 and saw him with Jeff Beck in Philly, it was only a few months later when the helicopter crash happened.... my best friend and I had to take a week off from work over his passing....😭

I saw him live seven times between 1983 and 1989, the first time at the Wax Museum nightclub in DC, midnight show. I was at the foot of the stage. Somehow I survived. The last time was at the Capital Centre with Jeff Beck. He was the best. Met him outside of Constitution Hall in 1985, he signed my baseball hat. All I could say was how much I enjoyed your music. He said "thanks Buddy", patted me on the back and boarded his bus. I was in the presence of true greatness.

I think what impresses me the most is unlike today this is live no room for mistakes raw unreal talent all of them back then and since his mentor was Jimi Hendrix can you imagine how it was fir him they were just born with a guitar in there hands real passion great job on your reactions love them

SRV was the perfect assembly of skill and passion. He new how to manipulate that guitar to get any and every sound he wanted out of it, sounds most other guitarists didn't even know were possible. And his passion with that guitar...he didn't just play it, he didn't just make it cry or sing, he DIRTY DANCED with it for all to see! Everyone in that crowd needed a cigarette when he was done...
I did see him live. It went Beck,Stevie, then Clapton. Stevie gave me goose bumps.....He was sober at that point and was to this day the best live guitarist I have even seen in my life.
Lived in Austin throughout the 80,s.....saw him for 10 dollars at Antoines. Paid to see Albert Collins....Stevie showed up and they both played till Close.....lol
