Yeah to be honest I like SRV better. I love Hendrix and respect the HELL out of the things he did with a guitar but SRV had a cleaner, more coherent sound. When Hendrix was hammering it at top speed things could feel a little too chaotic, a little too sloppy. You never really get that with SRV, even at max tempos he still sounds fully in control of what he's doing.

    • @davidspalten1304

Stevie Ray was a GREAT blues man and did emulate Hendrix's syle and put more coherent structure on it. But Stevie Ray never wrote music and lyrics,l or played and produced albums like Are You Experienced and Axis. And if you watch Hendrix play Hey Joe, Like a Rolling Stone and Wild Thing at Monterey, then listen to his Little Wing, Red House and Johnny B. Good on Hendrix in the West, and Machine Gun at Filmore East, remember that in all of that he was the driving creative force. Steve's homage, as great as it may have been, was ultimately a tribute to Hendrix' genius.

Very well said and quite correct. The same is true of Jimi, of course. There is an interview where Chas Chandler tells about Jimi having a guitar around his neck literally all day long. Jimi would play whilst in the bathroom "because he liked the echo. It was no accident that he was that good."

Hearing Amber saying "you have to WATCH him play", made me think of this- long but cool story- I was at SRV's last show at Alpine Valley. As he was playing his encore- "Voodoo Chile"- my wife was sitting on the lawn watching on the jumbotron. I told her- "Stand up and watch this- you will never see anything like this ever again" Little did I know at the time it would be the last song he ever played with his band Double Trouble". I cried real tears the next morning when I heard the news, hell, I'm tearing up now.

With a circus mind that's running wild
    Butterflies and Zebras
    And Moonbeams and fairy tales
That's all she ever thinks about
    Riding with the wind
When I'm sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free
It's alright, she says it's alright

100% ! Always have believed that about his lyricism. How about... Bold As Love:
      [Verse 1]
      Anger, he smiles towering
      In shiny metallic purple armor
Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him
      Her fiery green gown
      Sneers at the grassy ground
      Blue are the life-giving waters
      Taken for granted
      They quietly understand
      The once happy turquoise armies
      Lay opposite ready
But wonder why the fight is on
      [Verse 2]
My red is so confident he flashes
Trophies of war and ribbons of euphoria
Orange is young, full of daring
But very unsteady for the first go around
My yellow in this case is not so mellow
In fact, I'm trying to say it's frightened like me
And all these emotions of mine
      Keeps holding me from
Giving my life to a rainbow like you

It's one of the most simple songs Jimi ever wrote...until you try to play it. It's not just sped-up blues riffs. It's something pure and perfect, but deceivingly easy-sounding, written in the Key of Genius.. I like that Stevie Ray played a lot of Jimi's riffs and runs, but he mainly played his own lines that meshed seamlessly. "Little Wing" was a perfect fit for Jimi's "Axis: Bold as Love" album, which just didn't sound like anything else he'd released yet. He showed he could be a volume and feedback monster, but inside him was the melodic heart of an Angel.

I had a former colleague who as a late teen immigrated to Canada from Germany without a pot to piss in. It was in the 1980's and he went AWOL on his mandatory military service in Germany. On route he flew from Germany to NY City with just a couple hundred bucks in his pocket. Wandering the streets of NY he happened upon a little bar & went inside. There was SRV paying for a relatively small number of patrons. My colleague had never heard of SRV and it seemed to him that nobody else there knew him either. Randy Hansen is regarded by Family, Friends and Musicians as the best Jimi Hendrix Impersonator to Cover his Music. SRV used to open for Randy when he was first starting out, Randy uses Marshall Amps like Jimi and these Amps have a Tube Pre-Amp Stage, SRV used Fender Super Reverb 50 Watt 4x10 Speakers & a Vibroverb, both are Clean Amps so Stevie used a Tube Screamer Pedal to push these Amps into Overdrive. Randy Hansen, Ritchie Blackmore, Stevie Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson & Yngwei Malmsteen and other Guitar Greats covered "Little Wing" My Guitar Student Chris in Seattle gave me back the Transcription for "Little Wing" I gave him after a year of lessons. Ritchie Blackmore played in Deep Purple, his "Fireball" Lp influenced Yngwei Malmsteen to fuse Classical with Rock & Roll. Yngwei stated "Some of Jimis best Guitar work was his Covers of Bob Dylans "Like a Rolling Stone & All along the Watchtower." Jimi Hendrix fused Blues, Folk, Soul, R&B, Funk, Classical & Jazz, he wasn't just a Blues Derivative Player but an Innovator. Ritchie Blackmore said In Guitar Player Magazine "In all due Respect BB, there's only so much you can say with a 5 note Pentatonic Scale. Jazz Musicians regard the Blues as the Grandfather of Jazz, They built off the Blues extending Chords, Stacking 3rds and adding Color tunes, the Dominant 5 Chord was most Embellished. Wes Montgomery & Charlie Christian were a big influence on Jimi, Wes stated "A Guitarist would have to be a pretty poor Musician to not hear what Charlie was saying or where he was Going with his Solos." Jimi Hendrix jammed with Jazz Musicians Miles Davis; John Mclaughlin, Les Paul, Mitch Mitchell, Roland Kirk and who ever Producer Alan Douglas could arrange forJazz Jams.

Charley owned "Charley's Guitar Shop" in Dallas where the two met in the 70's. Charley was the person who worked on all of Stevie's guitars. All of Stevie's guitars have names. One of his favorite is one Charley pieced together for him - the while & black one which Stevie named "The Charley Statocaster". They were super close & Stevie honored their friendship with the song. Jay's Question: "How is he playing without strumming it?"
Answer: If you press down hard(ish) on a string, it makes a noise whether or not you're strumming with your other hand. You'll see this in solos a lot when a guitarist "finger taps" a bunch of (usually quick) notes with one or both hands.

I play this with our bar band, been playing it for years, my pals etc. say they can close their eyes and would swear it was Stevie. Obviously makes me feel good, but, most of em don't know on top of already being a long time player, I religiously watched, listened and studied Stevie, including this concert over and over and over, to the point of almost destroying my marriage, ignoring a lot of other things, just memorizing every nuance, and trick, everything he played. All my free time plus, for probably a couple years , and then steady improving on. All the while he walked out that night and played it like he was born playing it. And,inside, I've appreciated the compliments, but know it's not quite true. Edit: oh, the " playing without strumming" you asked about, if you hammer on, and pull off the string hard enough, you get the sound, and note you want, has a slightly different sound than a pluck, but it's common, and helpful for speed, fluidity, etc. Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon are above top level just being able to read Stevie as well as they did, and be where they should be, not always easy with a guy like SRV.

7:00 The only reason I don't agree 100% is me thinking: "You clearly need to hear more Hendrix cuz ya'll gonna change your mind..."
Especially since you guys love Janis so much, I just kinda expect you'll have the same love for Jimi when you hear him play the guitar for real (apart from the theatrics)... He has that rugged, unpolished bluesy funky soul that I know you'll love once you get a real taste of it.
But well, that's just my opinion and no disrespect meant at all to SRV... He's a very close second as far as I'm concerned and I think they're both phenomenal in their own right.

I’ve been watching some old interviews with Stevie Ray - he was not only an extremely talented musician but a smart, kind, and funny man

SRV is your favorite. SRV's favorite was Jimi Hendrix and this was an homage to Jimi who wrote and performed it first. You've heard SRV do a couple of Jimi's songs, now you need to listen to Jimi.

Little wing and castles made of sand is the 2 saddest songs Jimi ever did.

I was lucky to see Stevie live 5-6 times in my life, including the last show of his life, that fateful night at Alpine Valley Wisc., and he was sensational EVERY single time! That last night, he talked on stage, about how getting sober saved his life, but saved his soul as well. He was gone forever about 6 hours later. Greatest blues guitarist ever, R.I.P.

Derek and the Dominoes do a pretty good job with this song. Eric Clapton and Duane Allman basically paying tribute to Jimi just days before his death.
