Stevie plays from a place of love. He's not trying to out play Jimi, he's hugging him.
SRV plays the song the way Hendrix wrote it as far as arrangement and turnaround but he did it his way.. Owning a theme while improvising over it is the best way to honor Hendrix because that's what Hendrix did..

I was living in Austin when he passed away and I can honestly tell you that I have never seen so much grief in one city over a musician. People were openly crying and there were so many memorials. Businesses put signs on their marquees displaying their love and sympathy. A part of the city died that day and has never returned. Stations that normally played pop music changed their play lists and played him. That is huge sign of respect. You earned a new sub. Well done!

Yes it did. I li ed in Dallas when JFK got killed. The whe city shut down and we t into a great mourning. I live in Austin and people did the same when Stevie died. It was a very sad day. I remember sensing a great feeling a great sense of loss.
I missed his show in Salem, only a month before his untimely demise. I can say we felt it here too, in Portland, OR. It was that ineffable feeling of loss (Jimi, Janis and Jim M., etc.) that just tears you up, but you know that life must go on...
It doesn't matter how many times I listen to Stevie Ray play this song, I get goosebumps! Always!!! He was my favorite guitarist of all time!👍😎🎸🎶

74dart man I think I read somewhere, Little Wing was not done as a future release. I think also it was recorded in Home studio of Jackson Brown when Texas Flood etc was being recorded by SRV and Double Trouble. Please let me know if anyone knows information my comment... Thx SRV💜🎵💜

I’m a Jimi Hendrix fan, too. I am also a Stevie Ray fan as well. If anybody can play Hendrix it’s Stevie! I love how Stevie combines his style with Jimi’s & still sounds great! Both artists are prominent in this video!

Yes, indeed. I second the motion on that. I got to see Stevie a couple of times, living here in Austin. His playing was so frikking awesome, in your face, and would blow you away. By that time, I had gotten to see a few blues folks like Muddy, Albert (both) etc. I had also seen black dudes impersonate, or copy Jimi, that would do, and could do excellent copies (note for note).. even one guy I remember, he was this black cat, left handed, with bandana and white strat, upside down maple neck, along with some of Jimi's 'tricks', but, when the band left space for the impersonators to improvise, they came up short, there was no history in their playing. They hadn't studied the blues enough, if at all, with those old LPs. When I got the chance to see Stevie, I knew right away he was the real deal. He had not only done his homework....he LIVED his homework.
Yeah, but, anyways, I agree with you. The first time I saw the El Macambo Video, I could see it in the comfort of my home, and I could clearly get wiped away by this driving force, like a locomotion train, pushing, yet giving Stevie the highwire to do his thang, he jumped right on that train, and played like nobody's business. He was the MAN.

The legend of Stevie is so well deserved ! An incredibly gifted musician who loved the Blues , and put a piece of his soul in every note . I am also a Hendrix fan , and have been since the first time I heard him in 1967 ! Stevie is one of the only artists that I love to hear Jimi covers from .They both hold a place in my heart , I think of them often , a combination of sadness , and love for their music ! As far as I am concerned they are both Supernatural , both total commitment to their art ! The biggest thing I learned about playing guitar from both of them was to play what you love , play from the heart , and play so that the audience can feel the love you have for your instrument !!
Stevie took Little Wing and made it his own whilst honoring Jimi's original composition. Jimi would have been proud to have Stevie make it his own. I can only imagine seeing the two of them jamming together on stage playing this. Great review!

Wow, you are lucky. I only saw him Live once. I was working for Bill Graham Presents (BGP), in the Bay Area, and Steve Ray and Double Trouble headlined a New Years Eve, with Tower of Power, show at Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland. It was the first time I got to work the stage, so I was very excited. I had heard of Stevie Ray at the time, but thought of it as "some Blues act". I got to flashlight SRV up the stairs and get him to the stage. Then I saw him play...........F**K!!! In hindsight, it was probably better that I didn't really appreciate him until I saw him play. I would've probably crapped my pants, guiding him up the stage stairs. I had a "Staff" T-Shirt, for that show, but it's long gone. I think it must have fed a lot of happy moths.
I was so fortunate to catch Stevie three times, the first being a club show in 1984. I was gutted when I heard he had passed away. I've seen a lot of players through the years but he had something special going on. Goosebumps indeed!

You were indeed blessed to see Stevie live. I kept thinking that I would catch one of his shows in Houston, but I waited too long. My boss used to see him often and tell me about his incendiary shows. I am friends with one of his cousins who tells wonderful stories about them as children. I'm glad that you got to see him live! My son and I were listening to this in the car when he was a teenager in the 90s. We were talking about it and there is part of the song where the combination of notes is so fast and precise (not a musician so don't know what it is called). My son's head kind of snapped over to look at me, mouth agape, and he said 'What just happened there?'. He was truly amazed and I got the rare thrill, as the parent of a teenager, of seeing my teenager experience something new and wonderful. We had a bonding moment that I will never forget after 22 years. This song still blows me away.

I've seen videos of Hendrix live . Many of them ! I've seen Stevie live l couldn't say howmany times being as l live in Austin. All l can say was even when Stevie was high he was great live. After he cleaned up he was better!! There is no telling how great he might have been. We miss you Stevie!!

Saw Stevie several times in Houston ,from his early days till his last tour. While his studio work is good,there is nothing like seeing him live. Only player that ever brought tears to my eyes from his playing and when I looked around,I was`nt the only one. I felt bad for other players who jammed with him,which Stevie loved to do, because he made many legends seem average by comparison.(Though he was much too humble to think that himself)

This was always my favorite...
Hanging with people in various places in times past, I was 17 when Stevie died amidst my inundation of LA Metal, but Stevie was like nothing else because he had the older tone from the generation previous but with as much and more brutal force and wizardry then anyone since. Being in that transitional era, various discussions would ask who was the best. I always said, "well, the guy that I know is the best, thinks Jimi Hendrix is the best". I always conjured up mental images of about a convergence of time with SRV and Hendrix together on the same stage playing this song. I always envisioned the occasion having to be the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon or something because it would have to be some monumental charity event... In the theater of the mind.
I really do appreciate you doing this because many people who might not know SRV, have seen this because of you. What a gig!

It's obvious why SRV won a Grammy for this cover (f/The Sky is Crying). Didn't matter who Stevie would cover... B. Guy, A. King, J. Hendrix, he could reinvent it with the special gift he had, adding a Superhuman Rarefied Virtuosity that no one, then or now can surpass!

“Little Wing” is really SRV’s masterpiece. He played great all the time, but he handled this song so perfectly.
Everything SRV is amazing, but this song is just an unreal rendition and I don't think anyone else could pull it off. To me, it's everything SRV is capable of perfectly placed into one epic live performance.
I feel blessed that I got to see Stevie live 5 times including the night he died at Alpine valley Wisc. Greatest and most intense blues guitarist EVER! A true gift from GOD, RIP

You said it perfectly. There's something that transcends the music and he manages to retain the soul of the track. Also "I'm not offended by him playing this song." That is so true... I experience that with so many artists and he is one of the few that manages to keep it powerful and raw.

I think what set Stevie apart from a lot of other guitarists is that when he did a cover he was able to a style that was all Stevie, but still have the utmost respect for the artist. I also love his take on George Harrison's Tax man
Yeah exactly, very few can do this if any since Stevie.
Stevie had working man's hands and a working man's approach, but he could be delicate at the same time. And that's a throwback to when the great Blue's Cats grew up working farms and dirt. Everything about life was hard labor. I'm a 52 year old house painter that grew up in the country , and that has always been a part of my music. It can't be faked or replaced. It's that grit he has when he digs hard into those strings , BANG BANG BANG, like swinging a hammer. I mean this Cat could bend a 12 string. Not because he had to, but because he wanted to.

What’s unreal is I have dozens of gigs where he plays things unheard anywhere else. Some of the Fitzgeralds (Houston,TX) gigs from ‘80-‘82 are unreal, as is Kings Head, VA ‘80 and Groton,CT ‘80. Then you always have the song versions that stand alone, such as Life Without You from Montreux ‘85 and Tin Pan Alley from 4/1/80 at Steamboat 1874 in Austin. So many gems in his catalog! Amazing the people that got to witness this ascension to the pinnacle as it was happening. Witness to Greatness for sure

Dude, I LOVE your videos! It's strange how entertaining it can be to watch someone analyze musical performances. I guess it's that you're saying exactly what I'd say and I have nobody IRL to share that with. Most people don't get what makes these things so incredible.
That said, this is one of my favorite SRV performances. He covers Voodoo Chile on a live album (audio only I think) and it's his best Hendrix cover, imo. He really channels what it meant to be Hendrix in that video. It's almost haunting, how perfectly he channels his feel. Like Jimi's soul meshed with his for that moment . It just oozed out of him. It give me the chills every time I hear it.
Thanks! Yeah Stevie is the best I've seen play Hendrix. He keeps it so authentic yet somehow still sounds different enough that you know it's him. This is the best I've seen since Hendrix played it himself.
Exactly! Everyone else seems to adulterate his tunes somehow, but Stevie was the one guy who could pull it off, yet still leave his mark on the performance.

Years ago in Reno, Nevada I met Jimi's cousin, Rikki Hendrix. He was at that time touring with his own cover band of Jimi's stuff.
I know how he came up with a bunch of the phrases. He and Rocky Athas jammed their behinds off on this song. Rocky taught Stevie how to play this, and Stevie taught Rocky how to play House of the Rising Sun. Charley Wertz (

So here's the thing. I bought "Are You Experienced" when it first came out when I was 13 years old. And through all the subsequent years I put Jimi at the top of the pantheon of guitarists to inspire me. In my view he was untouchable. In the late 80's I caught SRV live in concert near where I lived. He did 'Voodoo Chile' as an encore. I instantly got offended because...how dare he?!! That lasted for approximately 30 seconds until I realized that this man was not only replicating Jimi but taking it to a whole new level. Thanks for posting this Fil..I'd also recommend folks listen to SRV's Voodoo Chile as well.

he did voodoo chile a different way every time he played it but it always sounded identical. watch the "austin city limits one" he's wearing a turquoise shirt ,then there are two more videos one hes wearing black pants and multi colored shirt and another he has the solid white guitar ,all three versions he played some of the cords different but it sounds exactly the same. i think to SRV he was bored with and had to show off his talent.
I dont know if this is the best Hendrix cover ever because I've heard some very good Voodoo Chile covers by him but this is definitely up there.What can i say, Stevie Ray was a genius like Hendrix,and i wouldn't want anyone else covering his songs but him.He's was the only artist who could do them justice.
I agree with that, Stevies covers are great. A lot of guitarists have tried, and failed. Even very well known guitarists, which just shows how special Stevie was.

Would have liked to hear people like SRV & Hendrix live in person. Reason being mostly because they would have sounded to at least some degree different then the studio recordings & even live recordings because both get engineered in a studio, even the live ones get tweaked. If both of them walked into our homes, with exactly the same guitars & gear they used it surely would be different I think. Thanks for these vids, you have an interesting idea in doing these. All the best. :)

I was in dental school when he died 1989 or 90? Anyway, I cried for like an hour. I met my wife that year and still happily married. Stevie was set to come to Lubbock to the fall fair a few weeks later and I was gonna go. Never got to see him live.
Sad that you never got to see him live. I went to college just south of Austin, Texas and got to see him in small venues before he made it big. He could fill a small night club up at the mention of his name even then. I actually got to talk with him for about a minute one time. Very nice and a humble guy when it came to his talent.
I personally think SVR plays it better than Hendrix, he totally makes it his own!

I saw Jimi over 10 times and he was not as good live as people think. He was always stoned and fumbled a lot. The only time he was incredible was 1968 Hollywood bowl. Soft machine opened, then Vanilla Fudge came out and tore the Bowl down, just incredible. Hendrix came out and remarked that Fudge was so good he'd really have to play his "ass off". And he did. Not knocking him, just pointing out he was better in studio than live. SRV was as good live as in studio. We were blessed to have him as long as we did.
Yeah I haven't seen anything I'd consider bad or even off live by Stevie. Jimi did go a bit mad sometimes so there are times when he certainly wasn't as consistent.
The studio couldn't properly capture Stevie's magic. I feel his studio albums lack the punch that you hear when he's playing live. While I don't mind putting a Stevie record on every now and then, I'm consistenty putting on bootlegs. He's at his best when he's live and on stage!
BlackTalon 1 jimi was most definately a live act. Listen to berkley, Atlanta pop, any of the fillmore albums. He definately has his sloppy shows, but when he was on fire he was way beyond stevie atleast creatively
Hendrix definitely had some bad shows but he had some fantastic ones also... You mentioned the Hollywood Bowl but my God .... Monterey pop, Miami pop, Atlanta, the Fillmore shows with the Band of Gypsys, Royal Albert Hall show and people will still be listening to his version of the Banner at Woodstock 100 years from now... Not too shabby for a 4 year career......
BlackTalon 1 Jimi was inconsistent, probably because he was over-worked and underpaid. He got fed up playing his hit songs and doing gimmicks on stage.
Suddenly he would do something amazing and jaw-droppingly beautiful like Villa Nova Junction at Woodstock.
Filmore East concerts were amazing when he just stood still and played. If he lived he would have worked with Miles Davis and would have really evolved.
Oboy! There's a BUNCH of reactions videos to SRV! I was kind of apprehensive because 'Little Wing' is such a personal favorite, but this was totally awesome. And, as implored, I listened to the whole thing from the link...it got even better. Your channel is like stumbling into the cave in "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves"....filled with treasures. It's hard to say that as without the original composition by Hendrix, SRV would have nothing to play!
Fair enough, but I think if you listen to Jimi's first, then Stevie's, it's pretty obvious, to me at least, that SRV's is a better version. Great channel by the way. Keep it up.
You must be high... Jimi's version has way more style than SRV. Stevie's version is good but nowhere near Jimi's creativity. SRV basically only plays one style while Jimi had a lot of different style's he'd do. Jimi was WAY more or original and creative than SRV. Stevie still great too of course but not on the same level as Jimi. Jimi was the originator, SRV the imitator - don't forget that!

I think SRV was as soulful as Hendrix, or visa versa, but as far as playing style he has more in common with Albert Collins, fellow Texas bluesman.

How did I miss this. GOD, just so damn good. SRV just plays so effortlessly, he never seems to be thinking about what he is doing. He just seems to be enjoying listening to what he is playing. I second the comments about the shredding over songs. Awesome stuff.
I never heard anyone break down SRV better than you . I don't play . But I've learned so much more about guitar watching you.. I hope everyone appreciates you. You very good at what you do !

All due respect to Jimi but I've watched and listened over the years and his playing never grabbed my heart. Not anti Jimi at all but he could never get close to Stevie in my opinion.
It's a difficult thing to nail down, Jimi wrote some great tunes!

In fairness to Jimi, we rarely got to hear him play when he wasn't high. Stevie's playing only got better with his sobriety, it's such a damn shame we lost him so soon after getting sober. I often wonder what Jimi would have sounded like had he gotten clean. Both were truly gifted & both taken far too soon.

for my money, I'll take SRV over Hendrix every day of the week and twice on Sunday. It just doesn't get better than SRV!
They're both great players, without Jimi I think Stevie wouldn't have been the same.
agreed, but then again, the same could be said of Hendrix and whoever his influences are, and their influences and so on and so on. So I've never held that against a player. I just take what I hear and see of SRV and it touches me in a way that no other guitarist can!
You can tell by SRV's playing that he absolutely adored Jimi though. They both had that "fire" in their soul too.
David, I love SRV also but let's face it... Jimi changed music... Listen to various tracks recorded in 1966 and 67 the listen to the Are You Experienced track.... Whole different ballgame.......
who wrote the song ? Jimi Hendrix. the problem with you guys is that you act like SRV invented the blues. I will take Albert king, Freddie king, bb king and Jimi Hendrix any day over SRV As well as other blues greats
I personally think SRVs playing is a million times more satisfying to the ears than Jimi's. Total personal opinion lol.

It depends what you're into I guess, Jimi did go off the beaten track now and again but he was the first guitarist I heard and made me want to play the guitar. He laid the foundation for players like Stevie, then Stevie took it onwards.

I'm all for Hendrix, but as typical on that side of the pond, you seem to stuck in reviewing exclusively only the first gear of SRV's slow Blues Songs?...Life by the Drop has more low gear soul then anything on SRV you've put out on SRV, maybe it's a tempo thing, but Thirds Stone from the Sun and Voodoo Childe are infinitely more compelling then this version of Little Wing?...More to the point, if we are even looking down these SRV roads, the spirit of SRV deserves to be flooded in his propper adulations, as boldly exhibited on the thunderous shuffling SRV cover song Mary Little Lamb from the 2nd Double Trouble Austin City Limits Show, thoroughly dissected, where his guitar hero genius is on full display?...8P

Totally agree. Voodoo Chile is terrific. And I found one other person in the world who appreciates Mary Had a Little Lamb as much as I to. That song has so much soul. SRV takes a nursery rhyme and turns it into a masterpiece. He's a genius.

It's funny you mention SRV's hands, as Hendrix had huge hands as well. I had the pleasure of meeting him in Hollywood years ago when he came to a gig I played at the Whiskey. After the show he came to our hotel for a party and, though I have fairly large hands, when I shook his hand I couldn't imagine how he could manage to fret one string at a time on a Strat. He was a very quiet and gentle guy offstage and not easy to strike up a conversation with. He kind of kept to himself and listened to the live tracks we had recorded at the show that night. I still have the drawing he did on one of the tape boxes while listening in headphones.

I was lucky enough to be at UT and we went to the Rome Inn,a small joint and we would sit ay the bar and listen in amazement and appreciation. Monday’s were Blue
