    Initially, I believed it nigh impossible to value the "humble" perspective of a man wearing a braided chain 4 inch gold medallion. But if this man was a character in Fallout, he'd be a goddamn 10/10 charisma. I would follow him into battle, just to have the small chance of celebrating with him afterwards.

      But what he said is true. Vodka is deliberately made to be tasteless. The better the vodka, the less it tastes. Whisky has a variety of tastes. • @lostthoughts73
      @lostthoughts73 4 роки тому +2

      Actually, it depends on the company and the flavour. I used to melt my ice cream a little a lot to enhance the overall taste but eat it before it melted completely. That makes it feel like an ice cream with a extra flavor coating. But, as I said, this doesn't work with all flavours. For example, strawberry tastes so sweet that I just puke it out, but mangos get a nice sultry texture this way. Also, you can use the melted ice cream to work with the toppings. Try adding some chocolate syrup to a vanilla ice cream but instead of eating it instantly, swirl it around in the bowl letting it melt a little so that it now feels like a chocolate doughnut hole but tastes like ice cream

    Word from a chemist, technically the addition of water doesn’t cause a chemical reaction; it’s a physical process called “partioning”. He described what’s happening properly in terms of water insolubles separating from the water solubles. To partition is to separate, which is a physical action on the chemicals. Just to be clear a chemical reaction requires chemicals interacting in such a way to change at least one of the chemicals into a different chemical.

    Also on a side note: If you are specifically looking for whiskies with a high oil content, you don't have to rely on your or other people's experience. Instead specifically look for non-chill filtered whiskies, which the Bruichladdich happens to be and the rye they try afterwards most probably isn't. Chill filtration is a process that is specifically designed to remove oily components from whisky, because they can make it cloudy at low temperatures.

      usaswimmer1020 yeah, I mean, it’s pretty basic to put a tiny bit of water into good scotch to make the flavors bloom a bit. If you don’t do that, but rather put a bit of ice in, it’s going to do the same thing initially.

    • @somefuckstolemynick
      @somefuckstolemynick 5 років тому +14

      Also, never had the "vomit" problem, but I tend to get pretty high-end scotch.

    This guy knows a ton about scotch but I have one complaint. He hays this is a very smokey scotch, goes on to describe the whole peat smoke procedure etc.... All good, except that particular scotch "Bruichladdich - The Classic Laddie" is an unpeated scotch. Says it right on the bottle. I have one in my liquor cabinet right now. It's delicious, and has a strong Islay flavor, but no peat.

    • @Unearthing
      @Unearthing 4 роки тому +34

      I thought the same thing immediately. But, smoke doesn't come exclusively from peat fires, though. The barley (and any other grain wanted) can be dried by smoke from e.g. birch wood, too. The Laddie is certainly unpeated, but it has some very subtle smoke nevertheless. My favourite example for non-peated but still smoky flavour is Talisker 10.

      Nah, there isn't anything bad about this video at all, it's great content and very enjoyable listening to. Like TheYarrrr mentioned, it's still kinda funny how he knows almost everything down to the tiniest detail but still takes The Laddie as a representation of Islay's smoky whisky profiles. Certainly, The Laddie is a little aggressive (comes with 50% ABV) when undiluted, but it certainly isn't agressively smoky. Anyone more familiar with Islay whiskies will easily second that. Maybe he thought of Bruichladdich's Octomore Series which undeniably is aggressively smoky.

    • @jcarkesteijn
      @jcarkesteijn 4 роки тому +1

      Just what I thought. Let's just say he was talking about Islay whisky's in general, in that case it would make sense. (I'm a Lagavulin-drinker myself, but I really like the Octomore-series for special occasions - it's too pricey for me to drink every time.)

    In Scotland, people sometimes have water rather than ice. The difference is simply that the ice gradually melts as you drink it, so it has a varying amount of water (depending on how fast you drink) whereas a dash of water stays constant throughout the whole drink. And of course if you prefer it chilled or room temp. Water/ice drastically changes the taste of whikey (generally brings out sweeter flavours) so I always like to try a new one with and without ice and then decide.

      I once froze a bottle of gin for my martinis. Freezing improves vodka in that it gains a very oily mouth feel, and I figured since gin IS a vodka, why not? I found out why not. A great martini requires some water dilution, which doesn't happen when the booze has been chilled below zero. You get a fiery, oily martini that tastes like crap. Similarly, with room temperature gin that is shaken, not stirred, you get a watered down, chilled drink where you barely taste the gin. Stirred, the fire of the gin is extinguished, the flavors all come through, and it is properly chilled for enjoyment.

    I hate to be pedantic, but the water drops going into the whisky doesn't create a chemical reaction; it's a physical reaction. Water solubility has to do with the polarity of the molecules, not the actual molecular bonds. No new chemical substance is created from mixing the water with whisky, thus it is not a chemical reaction but a physical reaction.
    Wow, that is way more nerdy than it really should be.

    • @VIR0L0GY
      @VIR0L0GY 5 років тому +5

      This simply isn't true. The physical reaction is molecules interacting and bumping into each other. The chemical reaction is those molecules shifting and changing into other compounds producing nuanced flavours that only exist with additional water. The concentration of water is relative to the amount of other flavours produced. Solubility is based on polarity, yes. But polarity and the resulting compounds are chemical reactions. Brian is correct in the video.

    • @barrys9842
      @barrys9842 5 років тому +10

      VIR0L0GY I don’t think it’s creating new compounds. The water just moves the oils to the top of the whiskey so it is more separated and easier to taste. That’s what I got anyway

    • @RCaIabraro
      @RCaIabraro 5 років тому +2

      Polarity is a form of intermolecular force... technically XD In a previous life I did supercritical fluid extractions, which is all about polar/nonpolar. But you're right, you're making the whisky more polar and reducing the solubility of the nonpolar components, which are for the most part less dense, and will therefore float to the surface. The nonpolar phase tends to contain the more volatile, fragrant, and flavorful components, so pulling these out of solution and forcing them to the surface does indeed sound like a visceral experience.

  • @ices48
    @ices48 7 років тому +382

    There is no chemical reaction, nothing is being converted to a different molecule . just separation due to polar and non polar properties,thus its a simple physical separation no reaction .

    This just blew my mind. I got my love of whiskey from working in an Irish Pub some years ago, but I never heard of adding a few drops of water to drink. Of I had to try it with the whiskey I had on hand. It's Jameson, so it's a pretty translucent whiskey. I held the glass at eye level and dropped the water in. I saw the water flowing through it and down like it was a bit viscous, so I figured there had to be a least a little bit of oil there. I started with about 3 drops and took a sip. I only say "about three" as I did not have a straw handy, so I had to let it drip off of a spoon and approximate it that way. I did notice a little change to the flavor profile, but the biggest change was the feeling of oil on my tongue. I repeated with a little more water for the next drink, and sure enough, the profile changed to a flavor I have never had out of Jameson. I look forward to playing around with this newfound knowledge!

    I'm so addicted to watching this. You should really give this guy a show on food network!!! He's EPIC!! I have a question. Jack Daniels. It's "mashed sour"......…...WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? I think it means it tastes awful because it does. And now I'm thinking that since my only experience with whisk(e)y was a sip of JD that I might be missing out on something way better.
