Here in Brazil Wii U has become a cheaper option for those who want to play games like Zelda BOTW, Bayonetta 2, DKCTF and others without having to spend an absurd amount of money to buy a Nintendo Switch and its games.
I really love the Wii U, in my opinion it has one of the best waves of Nintendo exclusives especially when compared to consoles like Game Cube.
In some aspects I even prefer the Wii U to the Switch, having IDs, Folder System, input for headsets straight from the control, music on the menu and in the eShop in addition to all the social and interactive system of Miiverse are sorely missed for me on the Nintendo Switch.

The only thing I absolutely hate about the Wii U is that it IS backwards compatible with GameCube discs, its just locked out and a simple soft-mod can override the lockout and make your Wii U read GameCube discs on the Virtual Wii Dashboard. It had the capability to do it, they just chose not to make it available.

To be fair, this isn’t just a Wii U thing. Nintendo started axing Gamecube BC on the original Wii itself in 2011, and quite frankly, I’m surprised it lasted that long given the Wii’s mass market demographic.
Funny story: when I bought my first backup Wii when I first started experimenting with softmodding in the mid 2010s, the console casing was fairly beat up and scratched but under the doors with the GC controller ports and memory cards was like, completely pristine.
The previous owners obviously never even opened those doors never mind actually putting in a GC game lmao.

    • @brandnewman9870

@@strykah92 That''s the reason why the first vertical edition of the Wii is still the best. Even if you mod your later version, you lose the GC controller connection, and that's quite frankly a shame (but at least compatibility is still there, no matter what Wii / Wii U you own).

What's even more insulting is they made an official Gamecube controller adapter for the Wii U! It works on Wii U Smash and I think a small handful of other games. @@notrenbanney2450 They're both extremely different despite both having that JRPG anime look. I don't know how my opinions stack up to everyone else's (because I've never actually seen a poll on people's opinions comparing the two), but I liked XC2 a lot, and I still like XCX much more. It's my favorite exclusively single player game of all time, and in my top 5 games ever. The combat is FAR more customizable in XCX, and while XC2's combat opens up quite a bit once you get farther into the game and open up Elemental Bursts and Chain Attacks, in my opinion, there's a lot more decision making in XCX, for the better. After a while, I found that I just did the same thing in XC2 battle after battle. Get a number of elemental orbs on the main target, dealing about 2/3 of my foe's HP in the process, and then chain attack for the KO. And that required paying attention and making decisions, but XCX lets you customize the decisions that you had to make far more. And once you really get into the Overdrive mechanic, XCX's combat just becomes that much more interesting. I liked that XC2 let you experiment with different blades and elements on different drivers, but the level of customization in XCX is in its own tier, not just in the realm of Xenoblade games but in the realm of open-world RPGs in general. There are many different classes and weapon types you can master, 17 different characters to control, and two completely different methods of combat, both of which vary greatly and are customizable in their own way (I won't say more to avoid spoilers).
Additionally, exploration was far more fun (and rewarding, imo) in XCX. There is a much larger and completely non-linear area to cover than in XC2, with no loading zones, tons of secret areas, and constant rewards for exploring farther, opening caches and defeating normal and unique enemies. There are some seriously insane superbosses, and the endgame grinding is tedious at times but extremely rewarding if you are interested in pushing your characters and damage to their upper limits (I personally wasn't interested in that after my first couple of playthroughs, but I did some late-game grinding on subsequent playthroughs). There is an absolute plethora of sidequests, and you're just constantly rewarded for completing quests as you play through the game. There are a number of item-gathering quests that can be a real bother, but if you just look up the location of the item you need online, none of them will take you long. There's no real in-game way to know where they are, though, and that is a drag. There are also a bunch of party-member specific quests and affinity hangouts to complete, and they are pretty satisfying on average. There are a few duds mixed in, though.
If there was one main complaint I had with XCX, it's that the story didn't have as much to it as I'd have liked. That's not to say there's nothing there, but you often spend a lot of time between story quest chapters, completing other quests and exploring new areas in order to unlock the next story chapter, and those fill out a good portion of the playthrough time, unlike XC2's story, which was very involved all the way through the playthrough despite a good number of sidequests to complete. There are also fewer "significant" story chapter events than in XC2, like when meeting Pyra and Morag, and when leaving Vandham, for example. However (and there's a possibility this isn't the most popular opinion out there), I think the world itself very much makes up for that. Conversations and side quests with NPCs build the lore and provide explanations for other story and non-story events, and they make the world feel more inhabited and the story events feel far more significant on their own. And the basic idea of the game is about surviving and forging a path for your survival and humanity's growth on a foreign world, so I've felt that the story doesn't need to be very in-depth for the story and game as a whole to be exciting, especially considering the world is absolutely massive and has a lot to do in it.
It's hard to say if you'll like XCX just based on you either liking or not liking XC2, just because they're so different. And the characters are less animated when they speak in XCX. The story is less fantasy-esque, even though there are plenty of those elements present as well. But I will say that the people I've heard talk about liking this game like it A LOT. I really hope it gets a port to the Switch so that more people can experience it, because a game that awesome only getting a Wii U release is a pretty big heartbreak.

@@johnfrankster3244 Wow. No need for hysterics, everyone's entitled to an opinion. I have never enjoyed how the Switch 'feels' in undocked mode. It is entirely due to the design of the joycons. At best it feels flimsy and fragile. At worst they break easily. By contrast, the Wii U gamepad has a definitive Solid if somewhat Chunky feel to it. Even with the rabidly inferior software. The Switch Lite has a decent feel but my overly large hands take issue being cramped on the tiny thing. The Switch online store is a clutter filled mess that hasn't been updated or improved on in over 4 years. The Wii U has a simple and well built store that I find far superior, even if limited in quantity. Even the 3ds has a better online store that's easier to navigate. To each his own tho.

As someone who never owned a Wii U, you do manage to make it sound exciting! I think the biggest draws for me are legacy content and some of their exclusives. As a system I still don’t like the idea, although ZombieU looks like it has great functions.
The thing now is still desperately clinging on as we always do that switch has these things around the corner. We need the Windwaker/TP ports. We need a virtual console of sorts, or at least an ability to play the missing NES/SNES games. We NEED N64 content, like how that isn’t a thing yet blows my mind. Nintendo has such a rich library of games that for some fans are going completely unplayed if you didn’t own an original or the Wii U.
So yeah, you’ve tempted me for sure (good job!) but I think when the switch is winding down for good is when I’ll make my choice. Once I know the stuff I want is actually never coming to switch. I loved my Wii U! Sm4sh, Hyrule Warriors, Splatoon, Paper Mario, Botw! I put hundreds of hours into it. There is also Netflix which could be played on either screen. The whole being able to play wind waker on the game pad and still have the TV on is crazy!

I love the Wii U, especially because of Star Fox. I love the game and it's controls. I loved Wii U Karaoke, seeing my Mii dancing and singing like a Smurf. It was so much fun to give him a personality like this. I loved the pad, seeing films like Texas Chainsaw or another portable film at a time, the most hadn't touched films outside the big screen. Also a little child can play with it. I liked the era of Mr. Iwata and I'm sorry for the disaster the most didn't know about the existence of the Wii U- till now! Also sorry for Mr. Sakurai. Made one of the best Smash Bros. for nothing.
But buying a Wii U in 2021? Of course! But it's better to buy it for the little ones. The pad is not in danger in the hands of a child, the games are perfect and most of it like Yoshi's Wooly World are made with love. The concept is friendly and the the console is - with some forgiveble things- nothing less than the Switch of the past, bounded on it's own station.

Actually on the Wii U version of the Breath of the Wild, you have to use the gamepad for certain shrines. It would have been awesome to use the gamepad for menus also.

I've been thinking about getting a wii u for Xenoblade X but I'm not sure anymore since now you could emulate that game on pc and get higher res but the pc is also expensive so i guess

@tiggy wiggo no, at this point you are supporting a random person on eBay. Plus you can also dump a file from disk.

    The only real "why" is:
It's about $40-50, and it works with Wiimotes.
    And Virtual Console stuff.

I got my Wii U on launch day, and it remains one of my favourite consoles. I don't think a lot of Nintendo's franchises were represented terribly well on Wii, and Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Breath of the Wild were dramatic improvements beyond their Wii predecessors. Between the quality of their games on Wii U and 3DS, I think Nintendo's development studios made huge strides during the era, and Switch owners are reaping the benefits. The Virtual Console also makes it a really great Nintendo archive, with the Wii Remote support incidentally bringing over native support for the NES and SNES Classic Mini controllers.
I'm surprised that the video covered the unique appeal of Splatoon 1 and Smash Bros 4 on the system, but didn't mention Super Mario Maker. The game makes so much more sense with the GamePad's touchscreen, and it's something that really hurt the sequel.
I'm such a Wii U apologist, I even like Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival.

Fun fact. The Yoshi DLC for Sonic Lost World was very recently modded into the PC version and the mod author has already started work on the Zelda DLC

I got my console on launch day in 2012. I’ve played it regularly ever since and use it as my ‘current’ console. I’m running through a few GBA games on the VC, still play Mario Kart, Splatoon, Black Ops II and Mass Effect 3 online, was still creating and uploading Mario Maker levels until it ceased on 31st March, and I’m also replaying Breath of the Wild on hard mode.
The Wii U is a fantastic console which has a decent library of games. I expect I’ll continue to play said games until I finish them and / or the online functions shut down. Best £300 I ever spent.

I had the Zombie - U launch console bundle, I did enjoy it and overall I thought this was the best game, that utilise the gamepad; to its full potential.
I agree the restrictions in place combined with frantic tension and multitasking made this horror genre worked great!

    Wii backwards compatibility.
    Virtual Console.
    Homebrewing.
Three good reasons for having a WiiU. Plus some awesome exclusive experiences:
    Xenoblade Chronicles X
    Nintendo Land
    Paper Mario Color Splash
    Fatal Frame 5
    Mario & Sonic Rio 2016
    Affordable Space Adventures
And lets not forget Twilight Princess and Wind Waker's HD versions
II still play on my WiiU to this day. Specially WiiFitU, since I am in progress of dieting and exercising for losing weight
