  • The Wii U will soon be a decade old, and I think it's about time for someone to defend this console a little bit. The Wii U is full of problems, both internal and external, but in this video I'll be focusing on what the system got right. Most people only highlight the flaws, so I'll be doing the exact opposite. Thanks for Watching!

The WiiU was such an overhated console. I get why people didn't buy it, and I honestly don't blame them. But the charm the WiiU had... it's vast library of games, the honestly pretty cool gamepad integration into games like Nintendo Land, ZombiU and Game and Wario, and the wide array of virtual console games make it such a great console to look back on. Great Video! :)

I love my Wii U until this day.. I hate they shut down MiiVerse, Wii U Video Chat, Messaging, invites, seeing your friends' Mii running across your screen or you would see crowds of Miis that you are not friends with on your screen (Some people chose to have their Mii and Username public so they can enter the Mii palace) The Wii U could have been an amazing system but hard headed leadership and bad marketing killed that console potential..
We had music on the eShop.. The eShop felt alive and made you wanna just search for games.. When you boot up the eShop you get to play a matching game before everything loads.. This console didn't fail Nintendo, Nintendo failed this console..

Even though a lot of Wii U games have been ported to the Switch, I'd argue that many are still best experienced on the original system. Treasure Tracker and the first Mario Maker are way better when playing on the TV because of the gamepad. I miss being able to manage my inventory in Zelda games with the gamepad, too. There's so much to love about this system. Like you, I always have my Wii U hooked up (even if I don't always use it lol). It truly is the ultimate Nintendo console with its vast game selection and charm.

It’s really refreshing to hear so much positivity about the Wii U! I will die on the hill that this console is delightful. I loved it back in 2012, I loved it at its lowest point in 2016, and I still love it now. I cannot believe the amount of crap I have gotten over the years when expressing how much I adore the Wii U. I don’t understand how low sales and most of the games getting ported = bad console (individuals saying this probably never even had one). It bothers me how people seem to take any opportunity to dunk on it for no reason. This was especially prevalent during the early days of the Switch, everyone was acting like nobody ever liked it, meanwhile I was having a blast with Breath of the Wild on my Wii U. I’m glad to see more positive discussion around the console, it really deserves it. I hope those who didn’t like it can look back in retrospect and recognize the charms and awesome features of the Wii U!

It's like being yourself at school, getting made fun of so then you just act super reserved. I've been told the music stuff was removed to help with loading times and performance since that was a pretty common critique of the Wii U, but even the Directs back then had so much goofiness and memeable moments. I got a 2DS when I had just turned 10 back in 2015, then a Wii U on Xmas of the same year. It was a console that I thought was difficult to get back then. But those consoles actually helped me access social media for the very first time in my life with Miiverse. I was truly pleased to finally see what interacting with people around the world and playing in online multiplayer was like.
I also received Mario Maker and some amiibos along with my Wii U, then shortly when the new year passed, I had been able to publish stages online. It eventually became something I always did daily for a long time, until I joined UA-cam in the end of 2016.
And here we are in 2022. I am now 17, living happily with my artistic skills and a powerful PC. My Wii U and 2DS are also both still working, although I gave my 2DS to my little cousin after I upgraded to a New 3DS.
During the time I had a Wii U for a few years, I didn't know about its flaws and that only a few people also owned one. Regardless, I still managed to reach out to a plenty of people on Miiverse, mainly because it was then ported to the 3DS and it was full of Nintendo enthusiasts like me. It hurts for me that it had to fade away and I wish I could actually be able to look back at everything I shared there.
That console deserved better. It was a big improvement to the Wii when it came to accessing internet services, like the 3DS to the DS, but it unfortunately had a bad start with a messy presentation, poor marketing and games that turned out to be uninteresting to many. I think that if those sole problems were resolved in the first place, it would become a colossal success and everyone would understand all of its potentials.

You said it. People don't know what they missed. Had some friends over a few weeks back and they thought we were gonna play Switch, but I switched it up and fired up the Wii U. We had a blast. Wii U was a ground breaking system, making developers have to think outside the box. Such a shame it didn't get the love it deserved. That's why I'll always keep mine. Truly, a hidden gem.

I actually really like the Wii U a lot, it was one of my early Nintendo consoles I’ve owned, I got it because my original Wii stopped reading discs. So I got a Wii U roughly around 2015-2016 and it came with Mario Maker 1, Splatoon 1 and Mario Kart 8! I did get a lot more other Wii U games later on like New Super Mario Bros U, Wind Waker HD and Nintendo Land. I’m glad that you’ve mentioned that it has all 3 Disney Infinity games as those were some of my first ever childhood games. It is a shame that the Wii U failed, but I still use my Wii U even today. I like that the Wii U supports HDMI as the original Wii did not. The compatibility with USB storage devices was so cool. It is good that Nintendo ported many Wii U games to Switch already. Looks like it’s completely the end of the Wii U and 3DS era after March 31st 2023. But that still won’t stop me from using my Wii U!

I remember getting my Wii U on Christmas 2012 and it really feels like a nostalgic console. The day I got it, I remember hooking it up, making Mii’s, and then grabbing an extra copy of Wii sports resort that my grandma had at her house on her Wii and then played it for like 8 hours. The next day I spent money on the E shop channel and bought Mario 64, Mario bros 1 and The Lost Levels, Yoshi’s Wooly World, and Wii Sports Club. Me and my brother played it so much together that it’s really nostalgic and fun to play together. It’s one of my most nostalgic console, but I also had a regular Wii where my grandma’s house was so we can play the Wii games at our house or our grandmas house.

I have around 900 hours of Minecraft: Wii U edition on there, meeting random people and hanging out. It just isnt the same on Nintendo Switch. I am really sad that this console's services are dying/have been killed. Who knows when Nintendo Network ID's get shut down.

MAN!!! This is an amazing video. I really feel the same way about many of the things you mentioned. I mostly grew up with the Gamecube/Wii, but I was still relatively young when the Wii U came out, and I played it like EVERY day. I am very nostalgic for it at this point, and I genuinely think there are so many great features, especially with the great shop and killer virtual console.
I also started my game development career on Wii U. I was really young, and I actually released one of the most HATED games on Wii U ever, "The Letter", but the system helped me get started in indie game development and I learned a TON over the years. I would not be where I am today without the Wii U.
This is the first I have seen of your channel, but great stuff. I am going to have to check out more of your videos. Really like your attitude. Have a good one man.

God, this is so damn unbelievably true. In fact, the Wii U is literally intrinsically linked to the best era of my life: it started when I got one for Christmas 2015, which was a complete U-turn from the dark time in my life that was 2015, relating to excessive fears about starting middle school that year. It ended gradually as a result of a few extraneous events, but the final nail in the coffin was the closure of Miiverse. The 3DS was basically the handheld equivalent of the Wii U, which is slightly touched upon in this video with the statement that it and the Wii U both have the most vibrant menus of any console. My history with the 3DS is complicated, to say the least, but ultimately it was still at least a partial corollary to the Wii U for me.
What I'd sum up the reasons for bad sales as boils down to the marketing, difficulty of third-party development, and being a generation behind its primary competitors in power.
While I didn't care much during the console's lifetime about some of the issues that I have come to retrospectively realize, I still proudly call myself a Wii U stan, and I will die on that hill.
Just another thing: When you stated that you're aware of the console's problems, you brought up the bad sales as one of them, which I think was inadvertently feeding into people's hatred of the console for low sales (which is circular reasoning, as people who hate the console for low sales would say it sold badly because people like them hated it), which you were trying to call out basically as the point of this video.

Even though I have a Switch I still play Wii U frequently (COD, MK8, etc) and I continue to buy games for it (I recently bought Wonderful 101), it was a pity for the poor sales which ended up leaving a lot of potential to explore in my opinion, but if even so many people love it, I think it shows that it has quality.

Another thing I would like to mention that you didn’t talk in your video was the birth of the Nindies.

Absolute W video. I got my Wii U for Christmas 2013 when I was 6 and enjoyed every single game I played (Except Star Fox Zero even though I know people like it). I strongly agree with everything you said in this video, it is one of the best consoles ever in my opinion and it is insane that is now a decade old today! The Switch is still a good console and a great concept with great games but it feels like a lot less original games that are as great as the Wii U as a lot of Switch games are Wii U ports with little new features, and plus almost every great Switch game came out in 2017 with very little games afterwards. Don't get me wrong, Switch is still a fabulous console but I still think it's no where near as great as the Wii U or even the 3DS. Overall I'd say the Wii U is definitely the best Nintendo console and possibly the greatest console of all time.

the wii u was my first and only console. i love it and i wouldnt give it up for a switch ever.
i got my wii u in 2014, as my little sister was born and my parents needed something to keep me distracted with. at first i barely used it but with the years i grew sort of with it and whenever i have the chance to grab a cool wii u game for cheap, i do!
splatoon’s amazing and the backwards compatibility with wii games makes it a must have console. nintendoland is such a good party game and mariokart 8 was a unique mariokart right up until nintendo started milking it for all its worth on switch instead of giving the world a new mariokart. oh well.
not to mention the genius people who make apps and stuff for homebrew, i could never in a million years be able to do that myself.
i think and hope everyone with a wii u can agree that its a really charming and unique console that didnt deserve the fate it got.
thanks for covering the wii u!
edit: one of my only problems with the wii u is how there is literally no gamecube vc and doesnt have native gamecube support, yet it does have wii vc and wii native support.
    just a small nitpick tho

The Wii U was NOT a bad console. I will admit that, for a Nintendo system, its library was relatively a little lackluster, in my opinion (not including all of its amazing backwards compatible GCN/Wii/WiiWare games or Virtual Console of course), but that along with its commercial underperformance can be traced back to Nintendo simply mishandling it. What it had available was a lot of fun regardless. I have some very fond memories of my Wii U, and I still own it to this day. I was stuck with it for several years, for monetary reasons, and I didn't pick up a Switch until 2021. It seems as though Nintendo has wished to "obsolete" the Wii U even further by porting many of its better first-party titles over to their shiny new hybrid. For a while, I was very bitter and jealous of those who had a Switch, and I wanted nothing to do with the company or console for years. There are complicated feelings, I appreciate the Switch more now, but I still love my Wii U for the great memories and games.
It's the last Nintendo system that had that uniquely Nintendo charm to it as well. I very much miss the menus, particularly the main screen with all the Miis running around. The music, much like the Wii's iconic menu, was so cozy and nostalgic! And little touches like the shop's slot machine and especially the animation of all the Pikmin carrying the migrating data from my Wii to Wii U were awesome! This is certainly something that the Switch, and modern Nintendo in general, lacks, with its corporate, flavorless menus with no music.
All in all, the Wii U is a greatly underappreciated console that hopefully will get more respect in retrospect by those like myself who actually enjoyed their time with its software. If nothing else, it was simply a step up from the original Wii (which I also feel is vastly over-hated these days) with its quirky new features that were decidedly hit-or-miss. A major stepping stone to where we are now. Without it, the Switch would probably have turned out very different. I agree with all of your points. Thank you so much for making this video.
