@Turtle? Turtle You could, but as I recall, the entire map (and by extension, the Go Here mechanic) was locked to the GamePad. I hated having to pick it up just to make commands.
From what I've heard, Tokyo Mirage Sessions Encore is very controversial in Japan since its based on the Overseas version for all regions, meaning censorship and a dungeon being removed. The controversy caused the Wii U version to start selling better than Encore on Amazon Japan, and Nintendo actually apologized and gave refunds for people who pre ordered digitially.
Ports might get a bad rep for seemingly being just a lazy copy/paste, but for me it mostly depends on the quality of the port itself. And a majority of these definitely are great ones worth copping, especially if you haven’t played the WiiU originals (which was plenty of people, considering how much it underperformed.) My personal favorites are Super Mario 3D World+Bowser’s Fury and Pikmin 3 Deluxe due to not just being a simple port, but adding both notable new content *and* quality of life additions that improve the original game as well. Speaking of such, I’m a bit disappointed that you didn’t mention said QoL improvements, since being able to auto-lock onto enemies and make all Pikmin charge forward with just the tap of a button makes the gameplay far snappier than the WiiU original, motion controls or not. I honestly kinda find that complaint more of a nitpick since sure, they’re great, but they also boil down to nothing but a personal preference since the button controls work entirely fine. Especially due to the aforementioned auto-lock. Shoutout does to Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition too for being…well, the definitive version of the game due to basically having the visuals of the WiiU version with all the 3DS version’s QoL tweaks/new content *and* all the DLC released for the game. So it’s insanely good value!
I tend to forget that TMS Encore exists. Mostly because I was extremely disappointed that not only they kept the censorship from the western version, but also applied to all versions, I was considering getting an Asia version if it had the original content but that single lazy decision (they used the American version because that was the most up-to-date version in terms of performance and optimization) pretty much guaranteed that I'll never play this game. (thank God Nintendo stopped with the heavy censorship with the Wii U era)
@@kierenbuckley370 that's fair, to be honest, what puts me off above all else for me it's the censorship, when it was announced I was willing to give it a chance since I wasn't too keen on either FE or SMT at the time.
@@MultiGamer451 Crafted World isn't even half as good as Woolly World though. Was really a dumb decision to downgrade that to 3DS instead of porting to Switch.
Man I know the Wii U tanked but it truly has one of the best exclusive libraries now that I’ve played a hefty chunk of them on Switch. Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, Donkey King Country Tropical Freeze and Super Mario 3D World and technically Breath of The Wild are arguably the best games in their respective genres. It’s amazing
Are we sure the Switch version of Maiden won't have the Nintendo costumes? Other games with Nintendo exclusives such as Bayonetta 1+2, both kept the Nintendo exclusive costumes when they came to the Switch.
That’s mostly ‘cause Nintendo published both the WiiU and Switch versions of Bayonetta 1+2, whereas the Switch version of Maiden of Black Water is being published by Bandai-Namco instead. Hence why it’s also being released on other platforms. Hopefully it does still include the Nintendo exclusives though.
Would be cool to see some of the other ports done by third party developers, and even the ones from other systems such as the PS2 (which seems to be the biggest source of ports for the Switch). Otherwise, good video!
You should make a list of the best Wii U to 3DS ports. There were some surprisingly good ones like Captain Toad Treasure Tracker and Yoshi's Woolly World.
The worst is NSMBUDX as it has less content than the NSMBU + NSLU game on the wii u, what a shame. also I hate how they completely removed the 3d world levels in treasure tracker, they were very good on captain toad.
Another superb video from Jon (as always). As a WiiU fan-boy I've not picked up a single WiiU port for the Switch and don't really feel I've missed out on much, all the tweaks and new content just haven't been compelling enough for me to consider buying the games again for a premium price. Closest game I considered was Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, mainly because the core gameplay carried over the 3DS mechanics which seems a fundamental change to the experience ... but then Age of Calamity was announced and that extinguished any interest in purchasing HW:DE.
Very cool video and I agree with pretty much all of it. It would be cool to get another one of these for other games ported from the Wii U to Switch. Things such as Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Minecraft, Resident Evil Revelations, Shovel Knight, Darksiders, Axiom Verge, and Shantae Half Genie Hero. I like Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Resident Evil Revelations, Shovel Knight, and Axiom Verge better on Wii U but Minecraft, Darksiders, and Shantae I prefer on Switch. Also, would have been cool to get a Breath of the Wild mention. The Switch is a port of the Wii U game despite them being released the same day. That game was built for years on Wii U.
Nah. It’s technically a cross-release since even if it was originally developed for WiiU, both versions were developed in tandem and dropped alongside eachother. Otherwise MGSV would be a PS3/Xbox 360 port.
@@amirgarcia547 I disagree completely. That game would have cone out before but they held it back for the Switch and low sales of the Wii U. Go back and watch those original showings of the game and Game Pad support with the Map. So pissed they removed that. Who knows what other neat ideas they had for the Wii U version. They got stripped out though.
no mention of the price of DKCTF? Edit: or Captain Toad? CT is one of my favourite games but its pretty bad that just the base switch version cost more than the wii u one at launch, AND then you have to pay extra for the DLC. If the DLC was all free or part of the game at launch then I wouldn't mind the extra price as much but ehhhh
imo, mk8dx should be #1 mainly because of the dlc the game got from early 2022 to late 2023. new tracks, characters and even updates that made the game fun
Unpopular opinion Bowsers fury just didn’t hit the spot for me. I just find it good add on, but not as good as the main game I just got annoyed by fury bowser popping up all the time
While I appreciate the better battle mode in MK8... I don't really play it. I really wish they'd have given us some extra courses as DLC by now. Those of us who bought the DLC on Wii U haven't played a new course in Christ knows how many years.
seriously, as you said it may not be perfect, but after being used to the wii u and 3ds versions seeing Hyrule Warriors run at something like a decent framerate Still feels Unreal
Before watching this I predict NSMB U Deluxe to be at the bottom of the list since it’s technically inferior to the Wii U version. [edit] I was correct lol. What happened with that game?
I need to mention that I don't like the additionnal item in MK8D. I liked the fact that MK8 was less focused on items than before and that other item ruins the concept a bit.
If TMS#FE Encore is explicitly better than the Wii U version, it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for Pikmin 3 to be above it if you deliberated on whether the Switch or Wii U port was better.
I think they should cancel all Nintendo Switch remakes of Wii U video games, mainly because it's harming the legacy of Nintendo video game production and because the remakes are released too soon, it is also because it would make focusing on producing main series canon games in the future much easier, this is very similar to how many animated direct-to-video follow-ups eventually got cancelled since 2006.
Captain Toad TT would be a way better Port if those DLCs was already part of the Port. I still prefer the Wii U and 3DS Version having 2 Screens instead of one (and the Mario Odyssey Levels would be so great, if they not replaced the Mario 3D World levels...)
Pikmin 3 DX controls on switch I believe are subjective.Honestly the lock-on system on switch I vastly prefer to my experience with a Wii remote, but maybe I’m just weird
....I think my Wii U is just a Virtual Console, Zelda game ports, Xenoblade X, and original Splatoon machine now. All these games I bought on Wii U getting better on Switch. My heart.
Thank you so much for giving Tropical Freeze the credit or deserves! Absolutely agree with your assessment of it, and it's a crime that Mario U Deluxe sold more than 5X the amount! Rare instance of a game I have a hard time not giving a 10/10. Really can't think of anything I didn't like about that game!
Just bought the port of Tropical Freeze (owned it on Wii U, first time buying a Wii U port), and while the game is still amazing and the QoL improvements are good to have, I would have preferred some extra kongtent aside from New Funky Mode.
Yes, would have been nice. F.e. a couple of additional levels in the special world. There is some cool concept art you can unlock that shows levels on the moon etc., would have been nice if they actually still made those. But it's a mystery in general what Retro Studios has been doing all those years...
@@orvoloco8261 You're acting like you prefer to pay more money than not. Don't pretend like NSO isn't a complete failure that offers little more than what was free before it. Also it's 20$ not 12.
I suppose this is a rating on the quality of the ports themselves rather than the games, Bayo Ports are great for bringing both to portable and 2 to a system people actually play. Other than that differences are low, only change to the game itself is making the second climax brace fair game, which is fine since it's already a masterpiece. (Don't know how TMS got above both it and DK though considering it forced the terrible localization upon the rest of the world that already had it uncensored though.)
Nah. It’s technically a cross-release since even if it was originally developed for WiiU, both versions were developed in tandem and dropped alongside eachother. Otherwise MGSV would be a PS3/Xbox 360 port.
I'm shocked Xenoblade X hasn't been ported yet. I do want it to remain solely on the wiiU tho so that the poor wiiU still has at least one great game going for it.
There is more than only that game still exclusive to Wii U...and looking at Switch's not really improving online service, the Virtual Console on Wii U is a gold mine.
Xenoblade Chronicles X, Wind Waker HD, and Twilight Princess HD. That's pretty much it. Starfox should just get a new game like Mario Tennis. And Game & Wario was made for the Wii U gamepad features and the Switch is getting a Wario game anyway.
I love these type of videos you have been doing! For me Pikmin 3 would have landed a few spots higher. I think they did a great job refining the button controls, especially with the lock on feature. Once you played for a bit the button controls work really well. They should have added online for the bingo battles though, that was the only real miss for the game.
Even if Hyrule Warriors didn’t integrate the 3DS content it would still be a superior version simply due to the fact that all the DLC is still full price on Wii U, and would cost 52.99 if you save by getting the bundles. The Wii U version sells used around $8, so you still end up at $60 for less content and missing QoL upgrades.
🙄 the nsmb dx overhate I'd bump Pikmin 3 up as well, I didnt enjoy the pointer controls for 1,2 on wii, so on Switch barely tried them. 🤷♂️ I'm a 3D World over Odyssey guy anyways, so my love of 3D world as my favorite game on Wii U was already there, that port is incredible Bowser's Fury was pretty good as well, not sure I would want a full game in that style but its a worthy Mario experience
I've come to the conclusion that Nintendo *HATES* the idea of not eventually bundling DLC with the base game of a title. Most of the official Nintendo first-party ports of earlier WiiU games bundle together all the DLC, additional modes of other ports/versions, and add additional upgrades like higher resolution or higher frame rate or both.
10.- Yeah, this port just shows the devs of NSMB don't have a single clue. 9.- Mostly the same as the originals. 2 games is worth for the price though. 8.- Very basic, but it looks cleaner and loads much faster than Wii U though. And Funky Mode is basically what Toadette should have been. Also, WHERE'S MY NEW DONKEY KONG?? 7.- Same game with the bare minimum of new content and improved load times. 6.- It's really a shame that so many games that controlled perfectly thanks to the Wiimote are losing that option due to new consoles leaving IR behind. I'd buy a Switch sensor bar if it was compatible with one. 5.- The new characters are really good, but I think this game really needs a sequel right now. 4.- Fixed the main issue with the original, Battle Mode. And basically made a perfect Mario Kart. But I'm so.... TIRED of MK8 now. Crash Team Racing has filled the itch is fine but we need a new Mario Kart PLEASE. 3.- Also needs a sequel, most of the stuff added sounds good until you play it and then it's just a bunch of very short content. 2.- I wish the handheld performance wasn't so unoptimized and that I could transfer my data from Wii U. The best version of the game so far. But I don't want to start my 400 hours of progress all over again.... 1.- All the small but smart changes they made to the gameplay are great, and Bowser's Fury could be sold as a $30 game. Made an already good game, an incredible one and I agree with Jon on this one.

To add to Pokken, they also added a 3v3 mode, which is a welcome mix up!
Great list!
(thank God Nintendo stopped with the heavy censorship with the Wii U era)
it's a good game its just not what we were promised to get
@@kierenbuckley370 that's fair, to be honest, what puts me off above all else for me it's the censorship, when it was announced I was willing to give it a chance since I wasn't too keen on either FE or SMT at the time.
I really want Nintendo Land to happen man. Make it require two switches if it must, it's the only thing my Wii U is still useful for.
not gonna happen
We need a sequel
I agree with 3D World + Bowsers Fury being the best Wii U to Switch port
Am I the only one who’s eagerly wanting Yoshi’s Woolly World? Why hasn’t that been ported yet?
Because it was ported to 3DS and kinda feels redundant since there's Crafted World
@@MultiGamer451 Fair enough. It’s just something I’m wanting to play since I never owned a WiiU or 3DS.
Not sure if I would consider 3D World the best, but it is a damn good improvement
I disagree with your stance on pikmin being better with motion/pointer controls as I personally think the Gamecube versions controlled the best.
UA-cam Gaming flagged this as Star Fox Guard. Yay?
lol
Oh schmitt, the uploader knows already. The joke is officially dead.
@@gluttonousmaximus9048 nothing...
I'm trying to grind to 100% on hyrule warriors definitive and I'm loving it. Good amount of challenge and really fun.
Other than that mesmerizing voice, the rankings were spot on.
@jose ramiro reynoso ruiz SMM 3DS is a bad port tho. The removal of a big feature is a BIG disappointment
If you're main complaint about NSMBUD is trying to play with 4 or 5 people, be glad you know 3 or 4 other people who would play it with you.
The worst is NSMBUDX as it has less content than the NSMBU + NSLU game on the wii u, what a shame. also I hate how they completely removed the 3d world levels in treasure tracker, they were very good on captain toad.
Also putting the spin on the jump button is awful
People also make and milked NSFW Peachette rip-offs
Another superb video from Jon (as always). As a WiiU fan-boy I've not picked up a single WiiU port for the Switch and don't really feel I've missed out on much, all the tweaks and new content just haven't been compelling enough for me to consider buying the games again for a premium price. Closest game I considered was Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, mainly because the core gameplay carried over the 3DS mechanics which seems a fundamental change to the experience ... but then Age of Calamity was announced and that extinguished any interest in purchasing HW:DE.
It’s ironic because I finally caved in and got HWDE despite getting both the WiiU version and Legends *because* of Age of Calamity lol.
ppl still playing Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, because Online is free.
haha yez
Not everybody is judging everything by price. They compared the versions and its content, not Nintendo's price policy.
I've honestly given up hope for ports of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD.
My one hope is that they’re waiting a bit longer after SSHD’s launch so that it doesn’t decrease its sales, but even that’s a pipe dream.
imo, mk8dx should be #1 mainly because of the dlc the game got from early 2022 to late 2023. new tracks, characters and even updates that made the game fun
Unpopular opinion
Bowsers fury just didn’t hit the spot for me. I just find it good add on, but not as good as the main game
I just got annoyed by fury bowser popping up all the time
Just need that Xeno X port.
While I appreciate the better battle mode in MK8... I don't really play it. I really wish they'd have given us some extra courses as DLC by now. Those of us who bought the DLC on Wii U haven't played a new course in Christ knows how many years.
How Tokyo Mirage rank higher than DK? Even by all that you said for the port.
seriously, as you said it may not be perfect, but after being used to the wii u and 3ds versions seeing Hyrule Warriors run at something like a decent framerate Still feels Unreal
Before watching this I predict NSMB U Deluxe to be at the bottom of the list since it’s technically inferior to the Wii U version.
[edit] I was correct lol. What happened with that game?
People ruined NSMBUD with the NSFW Peachette rip-offs
He explains what happened in the video...didn't you watch it?!
@@Ray_2112 they wrote this before watching
I need to mention that I don't like the additionnal item in MK8D. I liked the fact that MK8 was less focused on items than before and that other item ruins the concept a bit.
If TMS#FE Encore is explicitly better than the Wii U version, it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for Pikmin 3 to be above it if you deliberated on whether the Switch or Wii U port was better.
Pikmin 3 has lower lows, but higher highs, while TMS just had a few modest improvements.
Pikmin made improvements to the gameplay, which made it arguably more fun than the original.
Meanwhile TMS #FE still sucks to play on either version.
I just bought dk tropical freeze, hope I enjoy it.I didn't have a wii u and look forward to experiencing a great plaformer
It’s awesome you’ll love it
It’s better than Shit Mario Bros U “DeLuxE” in every way
It's a wonderful game, have fun. Amazing soundtrack by David Wise, too.
Hey Jon from Nintendo Life, everyone here!
Nintendo life
2:43 pretty sure you can also just use ZR
I think they should cancel all Nintendo Switch remakes of Wii U video games, mainly because it's harming the legacy of Nintendo video game production and because the remakes are released too soon, it is also because it would make focusing on producing main series canon games in the future much easier, this is very similar to how many animated direct-to-video follow-ups eventually got cancelled since 2006.
You guys were saying August would be tough, but there’s only a week left now, I think you’ve done great.
Captain Toad TT would be a way better Port if those DLCs was already part of the Port. I still prefer the Wii U and 3DS Version having 2 Screens instead of one (and the Mario Odyssey Levels would be so great, if they not replaced the Mario 3D World levels...)
Why did UA-cam classify this video as "Star Fox Guard" LMAO
Pikmin 3 DX controls on switch I believe are subjective.Honestly the lock-on system on switch I vastly prefer to my experience with a Wii remote, but maybe I’m just weird
Bowser's Fury can easily be the foundation of the next 3D Mario, and no one would mind!
Speak for yourself, not everyone.
....I think my Wii U is just a Virtual Console, Zelda game ports, Xenoblade X, and original Splatoon machine now. All these games I bought on Wii U getting better on Switch. My heart.
I hope to see Star Fox Zero and Xenoblade X. Star Fox Zero would need a bit of work though.
Jon has the best video ideas:) i love his videos
Thank you so much for giving Tropical Freeze the credit or deserves!
Absolutely agree with your assessment of it, and it's a crime that Mario U Deluxe sold more than 5X the amount!
Rare instance of a game I have a hard time not giving a 10/10. Really can't think of anything I didn't like about that game!
People just bought that trash because it had Mario in the title. Most Mario games are good, but not every game is good
@@andresreynoso7254 No, they bought Mario U Deluxe because of the shitty and hideous Peachette rip-offs
@@mariajimenafigueroa233 screw that Peachette, unnecessary new trash character
Just bought the port of Tropical Freeze (owned it on Wii U, first time buying a Wii U port), and while the game is still amazing and the QoL improvements are good to have, I would have preferred some extra kongtent aside from New Funky Mode.
Yes, would have been nice. F.e. a couple of additional levels in the special world. There is some cool concept art you can unlock that shows levels on the moon etc., would have been nice if they actually still made those. But it's a mystery in general what Retro Studios has been doing all those years...
Number 0: Xenoblade Chronicles X
I personally think the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 is better because the online play is free and I don’t have NSO.
Weak opinion.
If you cant afford 12$ a year you should find another hobby.
@@orvoloco8261 i mean, he could waste 12 dollars on other things (personal stuff) rather than on games
@@orvoloco8261 You're acting like you prefer to pay more money than not. Don't pretend like NSO isn't a complete failure that offers little more than what was free before it. Also it's 20$ not 12.
That’s not the game’s fault tho
Can’t blame the game for that, the game itself is better on Switch
Bayonetta 2 was my favorite Wii u port to switch it should've been higher lol 🤣 also I rarely play portable mode on there
Same lol
I suppose this is a rating on the quality of the ports themselves rather than the games, Bayo Ports are great for bringing both to portable and 2 to a system people actually play.
Other than that differences are low, only change to the game itself is making the second climax brace fair game, which is fine since it's already a masterpiece.
(Don't know how TMS got above both it and DK though considering it forced the terrible localization upon the rest of the world that already had it uncensored though.)
Does BOTW count?
I don't think so
Nah. It’s technically a cross-release since even if it was originally developed for WiiU, both versions were developed in tandem and dropped alongside eachother. Otherwise MGSV would be a PS3/Xbox 360 port.

Hyrule warriors definitive edition would be my number one. I’ve sunk 300+ hours into that game.
I'm shocked Xenoblade X hasn't been ported yet. I do want it to remain solely on the wiiU tho so that the poor wiiU still has at least one great game going for it.
I actually recently just got it for my Wii U haha
There is more than only that game still exclusive to Wii U...and looking at Switch's not really improving online service, the Virtual Console on Wii U is a gold mine.
@@Ray_2112 I only care about physical so virtual console is worthless to me.
I made a video on that horrible spin button on my channel man it so bad
What is there left to be ported?
Xenoblade X
Xenoblade Chronicles X, Wind Waker HD, and Twilight Princess HD. That's pretty much it. Starfox should just get a new game like Mario Tennis. And Game & Wario was made for the Wii U gamepad features and the Switch is getting a Wario game anyway.
Twilight Princess & Wind Waker
🙄 the nsmb dx overhate
I'd bump Pikmin 3 up as well, I didnt enjoy the pointer controls for 1,2 on wii, so on Switch barely tried them. 🤷♂️
I'm a 3D World over Odyssey guy anyways, so my love of 3D world as my favorite game on Wii U was already there, that port is incredible
Bowser's Fury was pretty good as well, not sure I would want a full game in that style but its a worthy Mario experience
This video confirms that Jon is not a Nintendo shill because he didn't put Tropical Freeze in all spots
But I still want some new MK8 dlc or a new mariokart game in general.
It means you played all content and ran out of content. You need more content.
@@robertpadua6096 yes I am aware of that. What I said is more specific than saying I want new content.
Next do a Wii to switch port video 🤩
Including those not ported by Nintendo
there aren't really many, are there?
I really want to play bowser fury, but I don't want to buy SM3DW, because I already played that game on the wiiu.
Could you rank *all* Wii U to Switch ports? (Including third party ones) (Yes, that would include Breath Of The Wild)
