People who are fine with emulation will emulate and original hardware enthusiasts will opt to only buy everdrives and optical drive emulators for their consoles.

I have looking for a copy of TWEWY for the past few weeks 😭I hope the price come back down eventually... I know it's not feasible, but I really wish that video game companies continued to produce all of their legacy titles so that there is always a way to get them a a cheap price.
You'll pretty much have to throw "moral conscious" aside if you want to play some of these old games. A flashcart (a good one is hard to obtain) is a far better deal right Now and Nintendo doesn't care to offer these games + old licensing deals ending to resell them
@Em Well they are essentially illegal pirated copies of the games, so they have no value and they might not even work on your system, plus it's possible to damage your system. I've had third party memory cards that aren't actually fakes, but were not made by or approved by Nintendo brick my Gamecube in the past.
May I propose that a lot of games were probably lost in the void of the in between of couch cushions, dropped in puddles, lost in school hallways, etc.? I luckily built my DS collection around 10 years ago because I had a feeling one day the games would skyrocket in value. I feel like a huge reason is because of how easily lost those tiny cartridges are. Also, they are some of the last games where the entire games are all on the cart without dlc or patches. 3ds games will shoot up eventually for the same reasons, but we need to make sure we document and save the patch files, dlcs and such before it’s too late.
my mom was a bus driver and found metroid hunters ds and gave it to me years ago. its actually pretty neat and am planning on playing it before dread comes out this year.

I am so thankful I've bought a good portion of the Nintendo DS library when it was still new, because some of the prices of these games are ridiculously high. They already were before (ie: HeartGold/SoulSilver, Castlevania, Okamiden, Solatorobo, etc.), but now a lot of the ones that were reasonably priced have spiked! It was going to happen one way or another, but it's so insane to see the DS go from reasonable to pricey in a matter of a couple of years.
Just this past month alone with the PSN store shutdown scare seemed to really ripple out to other retro systems. I can see DS games I bought 2 months ago being double now
Dragon Quest V on the DS was my introduction to the series, I absolutely loved it. Then I traded it in at gamestop for ~20$, which is something I have to live with for the rest of my life
Dude, same. Traded in Pokémon Pearl at GameStop a couple years back. I was pretty much done with it, but I feel kinda cheated looking at how much it costs to buy a used copy of Pearl at GameStop.
I bought a brand new sealed copy just two years ago for $40, and I was on the fence about it because the mobile port was so much cheaper. Looking at the prices now I'm glad that I dislike using my phone as a gaming device enough to have bought not just V, but IV and VI as well. I also bought Chrono Trigger for $30 on a whim because I thought it would be cool to have on a handheld.
Feels good that I got everything DS-related that I wanted a few years ago, because this is insane. I've only occasionally been looking for Pokémon SoulSilver, but I've given up finding that one for a good price, and I'm at peace with that. There are so many other Pokémon games to play anyway. :P
Making me feel good for getting HeartGold new on clearance for £30, naturally complete in box with the Pokéwalker. Gosh how that game has skyrocketed in value...
I'd rather just use emulation considering that most low budget phones are able to emulate DS to a high degree with upscaling.. DS emulation on a little 8-in tablet with an ipega controller is extremely nice
Rhythm Heaven used to be around $5 not too long ago, now I’ve seen it go for $50 or more. Sold mine a while back and wanted it again, but I bought the Japanese version instead because of the price difference. I’ll probably do the same for Chibi-Robo
This isn't really scalping. Scalping is when they buy new in demand products just to resell at inflated prices. This is just people selling their old games they don't play anymore at whatever price people are willing to pay for.
My mom found 20 games and a 3dsxl for $30 included quite a few pokemon games including heartgold which was the only one I never had. At a small thrift store in central ohio. They said the whole package was only worth $45. It was just $45 for heartgold at the time everywhere else.

I’m pretty lucky that my game stores price DS games fairly. I got most of the games I wanted back before the boom. The only big ones I got that was expensive was Pokémon Diamond boxed for $59.99 and HeartGold for $79.99. This was the year that Pokémon GO came out. Earlier in the year, I got SoulSilver for only $11.99.

I collect video game sheet music mostly through eBay and the price of these climb up about 50-100%+ since last year. Video games stuff, it’s the new sport memorabilia.
Most of my DS games are of the "Touch Generations" casual variety (a Brain Age 2 demo at EB Games was what sold me on the system), and recently I was able to pick up some other Touch Generation games I missed out on from amazon and eBay, many of them brand new and less than $20.
I was astounded when I saw Pokémon black and white 2 each going for $180 at a local retro games store. I’m so glad I bought those a long time ago for much cheaper since they’re such good games
I can confirm this as well. My local used games & DVD store has a copy of Black 2 with plastic case selling for $175. Copies of Sun and Moon are cheap though still being below their original retail price. I bought my copies of Black and White 2 years and years ago, though not within the year of their original release.
Nintendo needs to fix this. Either bring this stuff to switch, or re-release these games as a limited run, or just start selling roms for PC. I will not pay these prices.
And this is why it's been so painful for me to find a copy of Black/White 2. I missed these games when I was young and now I have no way to play them. It's specifically DS Pokémon and GameCube Mario Party that's stupid expensive and I want both
I got complete copies of DQ4-6 on eBay right before the lockdowns started and I thought I overpaid at the time, but I didn't mind since I wanted them for a while. I'm glad I didn't wait on those.
And here l am, randomly buying in 2018 both chrono trigger and okamiden brand new from amazon for $22 and $26 respectively, without even knowing there were getting expensive.
So I just finished my Pokémon DS collection and I can say without a doubt that things are WILD right now. Back in March the cheapest I got for a loose Pokémon Black 2 was $79.99 and even more wild was the cheapest Pokémon Diamond was for $45! I just picked up Platinum from my local game store for $200
Two years ago I score a big DS bundle deal with my co-worker whose daughter was trying to sell her and her brothers DS stuff since they no longer use it. I paid $70USD for everything and was shocked when I went to pick it up. They gave me about 20 games with majority being mint condition CiB, quite a few accessories that was all mint condition, and they gave me two DS systems. One was a Pink DS-i mint condition CiB, the other one was a Blue DS Lite that still had the GBA cover slot, but it didn't come with a box or manual, the hinges are kind of loose, and there are 2 small bars on the top screen of the DS one on each side of the screen. I took all this in to my local area's Retro Store to have it praise and was told the value of everything together is around $300USD. I really score on that deal and that was 2 years ago I wonder how much all that went up now. I need to see if her daughter still has all that Wii stuff they was trying to sell for like $100.

Same goes for Sealed Zelda Games on NDS ect. And even if i have the Games in my collection: the prices are truly out of there normal places. And lucky me, that i bought Ghost Trick Sealed after i watched a "hidden gems on NDS" Video. For only 16,50€ incl. Sometimes it's a "curse" to be a Sealed Collector, because i would also want to play it, but i don't want to open my Sealed copy (anymore, i was thinking the Game stay cheap) and buying a used copy will now costs more of what i payed for my Sealed Copy. I cried looking at DS/3DS SMT games’ prices. I managed to get SMT IV brand new for Christmas, but SMT IV: Apocalypse, SMT: Strange Journey Redux, and SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers are all being sold for $70 at the absolute cheapest and go anywhere up to about $250. Thankfully, I managed to buy all three digitally from the e-shop for 50% off during the Golden Week sale, but it means no physical copy to put on a shelf.
Etrian Odyssey games are also up there in price, it's such a damn shame that I will never be able to legitimately play EO3 which is one of my favorite games.
My mom cleaned my room when I was a teenager. She threw out all of my old Game boy advance boxes. Among them were pokemon mystery dungeon red rescue team, pokemon emerald, and pokemon sapphire. Sonic advance 2 as well. Luckily my games were somewhere else.
Yesterday I went to a retro game store and saw a copy of Steal Princess (Atlus, groan...) stickered at $60CAD. Before ringing me out the clerk checked ebay pricing and discovered the game had risen to over $100CAD and refused to sell it to me for less than $80CAD. This was an impulse buy for me so I declined. Later that same day I found another copy at another store for $40CAD. The lesson here is to be patient and continue the hunt.
I really regret not expanding my library before the announcement of the eShop closure. I have since expanded by 3DS library with both DS and 3DS games, but there are several I wish I could buy that are simply out of my price range. A few that I REALLY REALLY wanted I spent $40 on (Fantasy Life, cart only, being one), but it was really disappointing to see the prices on some games that looked like I might enjoy them, like Avalon Code. Or just about any of the 3DS Layton games (but I bought the DS ones).
I'm so glad I managed to get most of the DS games I really wanted back when they were still brand new (missed out on Avalon Code and Pokemon Conquest though, which I've long regretted). Even if I wasn't dead broke right now, I can't imagine trying to get into the meat of the system's library these days; I checked the prices on Solatorobo today and nearly had a stroke

I learned going forward and kept ALL of my purchases from Gams Boy Color and up for handhelds and from Nintendo 64 and up for home consoles.
I think for Pokemon games there's something different that needs to really be considered. Going all the way back to the GBA Pokemon games, it's still possible to bring your collection forward. All the way. So if you want to re experienced your childhood and replay those games, you can. But then you can bring your collection forward all the way to Pokemon Home. Maybe if you're not a Pokemon fan, you don't see the value in this. But for people who enjoy the series, it's a very big deal. It's the closest thing I know of to playing through an RPG and being able to keep your party members around after you kill the boss at the end.
I remember a few years ago my cousin had a few DS games and gave them to me for free. most of the games were dirt cheap but Pokemon White 2 was there. Sealed unopened. For free. I now see the prices and realise I’m sitting on a goldmine
I bought my brand new copy of Solatorobo for 15€ around the end of the 3DS era, I think. The prices now are just crazy. I'm glad I was a Tail Concerto fan as a teen and knew this game would be a worthwhile addition to my collection!
I'm glad I bought a lot of games before this started. (I wish I had had the good fortune to get cases for a lot of my used games, but so many people just don't keep them.) And, that I have a flashcart. I'm not really a fan of emulating DS games, I think it is a console where a lot is lost when emulated, so a flashcart was a necessity for me.
Right?? I pulled out my copy of Ghost Trick when he started talking about it, my DS library is weirdly stacked in terms of cult classics on the system but I don't have as much of the mainstream stuff which I guess is a good problem to have
This started happening to all the Animal Crossing games when NH came out. Also WOW I didn't realise all those Pokemon games were selling for so much?! I just checked Australian eBay and they're fairly pricey on there, even just for the cartridge on its own. Damn.
This right here is what makes me glad I never sold off any of my "old" games. I'm not a collector by any means but I enjoy casual gameplay from time to time. Just did some digging and found my copy of Black 2 I bought at release still sealed in its plastic wrap because I never got around to playing it due to still playing my White version. Still have my D/P/Pt/HG/B/W and W2 games as well. Guess I'll have a nice little treasure trove to pass down to my potential kids/niece when the time comes 😌
As an owner of the super rare, Walmart exclusive Heartgold bundle, I can understand SOME of these prices being high. However, a regular edition or catridge of Heartgold should not be 60$ or more.
I love my DS and 3DS collection i have built over these many many years. I am sad to see so man of them getting so high but i guess that’s one part of collecting. Knowing your hobby/passion can be worth something and other like you have the same one. Like all game consoles the moment the original player base getting older they want those games again or their is no way to playing now on new hardware will make them go up. Yes i know some of these were $30-$60 at Labuan house but they are no longer being made and many no longer have cases so the value will increase and you cant fix that even with mobile port. Again i sad and happy for the increase but GBC, DS, 3DS, PSP (some), and Vita games will spike more in the coming years i think just like SNES, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, and GameCube.

I think what we've been experiencing in terms of the second hand game market is the product of a few things
1) alot of people being nostalgic for their childhood all at once and all trying to buy back the games they enjoyed as kids
2) covid making people desire a form of escapsim which plays into reason 1 because they're seeking solace in the comfort of childhood
3) unlike when 80s/90s nostalgia were big back in the early - mid 2010s, there is no way to play most of these third/second party DS games other than their original release
basically just a perfect storm of greed, escapism and a belligerent reluctance to re-release games of this era

Maybe if you're not a Pokemon fan, you don't see the value in this. But for people who enjoy the series, it's a very big deal. It's the closest thing I know of to playing through an RPG and being able to keep your party members around after you kill the boss at the end.
