I used to do portable device battery and power testing for a living. The things which age batteries fastest are fast charging, over-charging, and over-draining. Keeping it about half full gives it the longest life, and the closer it gets to totally full or totally empty, the faster it ages. To get the maximum amount of total unplugged play hours out of a battery across its entire lifespan, use it to about 20% full then slow-charge it back to 80%, and repeat. And when not in use for a while, or when plugged in for a long time, try to keep it at about 60% When cared for, a battery can last decades... but when not cared for, it can go kaput in less than a year.

Another way to offset battery degradation is if your device has a pass through charging feature where it diverts power away from your battery and rely on directly from your wall charger. I know that some Android devices have it like the AYN Odin 2 and Samsung/ASUS phones.

You know, back during the Xbox 360/PS3 console generation, I used to hear that the Xbox using AA batteries in its controller made it inferior to the PS3, which used a lithium battery, but I personally found it to be way more convenient. Instead of having to plug in my controller every day or two, I would just keep some rechargeable AA batteries. When the ones in my controller died, I just had to swap them out for fresh ones and stick the dead ones on the charger. I never had to have a cable connected to my wireless controller. It was kind of nice.
Replaceable batteries are very under rated and I wish more devices still had easy-to-swap batteries so that you could cycle through them.

The Phawx has a nice video explaining how 40Hz is the sweet spot because maths. Short version is, if you're locked to the refresh rate, you are running 33% more frames per second. However, those frames last 25ms - which is between 30fps and 60fps gaming. It's a bit of a brain bender since we're pretty much wired to talk about fps, but once you figure out that what we perceive is frame times, it's easier to understand the math behind 40Hz gaming.

Slight warning regarding "battery calibration" on the Steam Deck. I haven't heard any reports lately, so maybe they fixed it, but some people were experiencing an issue with the Deck's screen going black and not coming back on again even after charging it back up when you drain the battery. It still runs as evident when you plug it into an external display, but theres nothing on the built in screen. A fix was found that involves flashing the BIOS, but I've been afraid to let my Deck go below 10% because of it.

I've played some games where lowering the TDP setting doesn't seem to do anything so I've literally left it at the lowest setting which if I remember correctly is 3.
I'm surprised how will Apex Legends runs at 3. This was a while ago so they may have updated it since it's a live service game but at one point I was playing it and I had it set to 3 by accident because I had the global setting on by accident.

For some devices, it'll overcharge a 4.20V cell to 4.35V on purpose, to increase runtime per charge and get the customer to buy a new phone sooner. On those, 4.20V is displayed as "80%", and it often displays as little as "10%" for 3.60V, even though the cell can safely go down to 3.0V. So it may be good sometimes to adjust downward, like doing a 70/10 rule or a 75/5 rule.

SteamDeck probably uses "Hibernate" as its default standby mode
The Windows default is "Sleep" and not "Hibernate"
You can switch the default power button action for windows to "Hibernate" instead of "Sleep" and it will save the state and completely turn off, giving you the zero battery drain that you're getting with the SteamDeck without needing to actually kill everything.
I switched it for my GPD4 because I was tired of the standby battery drain, and the boot time difference is negligible.

  • @TheTheShizzler

Nope, those li-po batteries fair better when they are storage charged to 3.83-3.86v. So that's around the recommended 50% voltage figure. Never leave a fully charged li-po battery fully charged for longer periods of time, it degrades the full capacity and also all that stored energy is a fire hazard.
